Most likely you can use the hard drive from your Gateway on HP laptop but you cannot use the recovery disc. You’ll have to find original HP restore disc or install OS from a generic XP/Vista CD.

To restore the operating system on a new hard drive you have to use a set of restore CDs. Put the restore CD into the laptop and boot the laptop from the CD/DVD drive. Follow the instructions. Some IBM laptops have these CDs; some come with a special recovery partition on the hard drive. If you do not have these CDs I guess you can call to IBM and buy CDs from them.
