my acer travel mate 290 switches on then shuts down streight away battery charge light is working

Thanks for these files!
Unfortunately, the PDF for the Acer Aspire 3000 is only chapter 6 of the service guide - the FRU parts list.
If anybody can find the complete manual - or at least the chapter on actual dissassembly - I would much appreciate it!

anyone have a service manual for a acer travelmate 2003?
March 15th, 2006 at 10:30 am
acer ferrari 3200: powers on, spins HD & DVD, monitor remains unlit, no beeps or sounds, seems as if it doesnt make it through the POST, or even into or out of the BIOS boot. computer was left near a small, possibly unshielded 220 watt sub-woofer for about 24 hours or more. i fear that scrambled the ROM. the power LED cycles from green to amber continuously. any other ideas on what might have happened, or if its a scrambled ROM, is there any solution im unaware of that can resuscitate my machine…or am i correct to assume that scrambled ROM = dead board = lost hope = many tears = new laptop?!
March 15th, 2006 at 10:32 am
(refer to earlier post by same user) err, meant 220 volt, probably only 10 watts: im stuck in iraq and i cant get access to any real meanas to fix, repair, or replace components.
March 15th, 2006 at 4:58 pm
Hey ryanexec,
I am not familiar with this model at all and cannot translate the code (green to amber). May be it is just a coincidence that your laptop stopped working after you left it by the sub-woofer. Try to remove parts like hard drive, dvd drive, wireless card, etc. one by one and see if you can get a video. I would also try to connect an external monitor to see if you can get the external video. Try to reseat (or replace if you can) the memory stick. Sometimes a failing memory stick can cause the problem you described.
Good luck.

Hey! Thanks for the info!
Have a problem with a ACER TravelMate 2300. System boots up goes into windows XP and then freezes after 5 mins of use or shuts down right away. Dont know if it is over heating however the fan is working fine and I cleaned the heatsink. After it freezes/shutsdown I can almost never get it to turn back on right away unless I wait 5 -10 mins.
Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks
March 24th, 2006 at 7:31 pm
Hey Pasquale,
The problem you described looks pretty much as overheating problem. Even though the heatisnk is clean, it is still possible that the thermal grease dried out and the CPU overheats. It doesn’t look like a software problem, memory problem or hard drive problem because you have to wait for 5-10 minutes before you turn it on.
Just in case I would try this. You can download Knoppix operating system. After you download it, you can burn it on one CD. It is Linux live CD. When you boot your laptop from Knoppix CD, it will start Linux OS right from the CD. Knoppix environment is very similar to Windows. When you boot from Knoppix, you bypass the hard drive and the Windows OS and you can illuminate the Windows and the hard drive related problems.
If your laptop still shuts down in 5-10 minutes when you run Knoppix, then most likely your laptop is overheating.
March 24th, 2006 at 9:17 pm
Hey CJ2600,
had a Knoppix STD live CD lying around. Booted it up with that and I find no problems with overheat. Comp dosn’t freeze up or shut down. I tried playing a few games that come with it to get the CPU to overheat but no avail. However when I turn the comp off and try to start it back up again I have to do the whole routine of clicking the power button off and on x1000 Or wait 5 mins and then try to turn it on. I am not trying to dismiss the overheating problem however maybe when it boots into windos the CPU overheats alot faster then when I run off of knoppix?
How do I tell fi I am out of thermal grease?
Thank you so much for the quick response!
March 24th, 2006 at 9:33 pm
I think it doesn’t meter what you run Windows or Linux. Each OS uses the same CPU and if it overheats, it overheats. To check the quality of thermal grease you have to remove the heatsink, that’s the only way. I am not familiar with Acers and cannot guide you. It’s hard to guess what kind of problem you experience, but I still would suspect the overheating problem. Try to apply new thermal grease and see what happens.

Hello,
i have a problem with a laptop that isn’t mine. An Acer travelmate 220.
I had it on my bed, for about 3 hours, and i think perhaps that wasn’t the most intelligent of moves, as it just shut down and now it won’t turn on.
I think it may have overheated?? or I may have blown something?
But it won’t even register the power cable.
I don’t want to take the computer apart, in case this voids the
warrenty, however,i would prefer not to pay large amounts of money when i return it!
any suggestions much appreciated.
Charlotte
March 26th, 2006 at 1:11 am
Hey Charlotteuk,
Check the AC adapter. It might be just a coincidence that your AC adapter died when the laptop was on the bed. If you laptop will not register the power cable, it is not just an overheating problem.
March 26th, 2006 at 1:46 am
The AC adaptor appears to be in tact, the light is on and it seems to be working. The computer doesn’t have a very long battery life, so i have been keeping the Ac adaptor plugged in. Normally, if i unplug it, windows/ the laptop, hibernates. This time it just turned itself off. black screen, no sign of power.
If it was an overheating problem, should it be able to turn on again?
March 26th, 2006 at 10:44 pm
When a laptop overheats, it usually suddenly turns itself off. After the CPU cool down, you should be able to turn it on again until next shutdown. I think you have a bigger problem then just an overheating.

April 9th, 2006 at 7:45 pm
Hi Ponchus,
I do not work with Acer notebooks. So it would be just a guess. I repaired a lot of Toshiba laptops with a very similar problem. You turn on the laptop, the CPU fans start spinning, the hard drive disk start spinning, but nothing appears on the LCD screen or an external monitor. In most cases it would be a symptom or a failed memory module. Try to replace the memory stick or install a good known test memory. Do not forget to connect an external monitor and check if you can get a video output there. If you a video on the external monitor, then the memory is good and most likely the problem is in the display assembly (LCD screen, FL inverter board, video cable, bad connection).
It is also possible that the hard drive have failed (“when i tried to boot up the system it got stuck on the welcome screen”) and somehow makes your laptop not to show the video. Try to remove the hard drive and start the laptop. See if you can get a video on the LCD screen.

Looking for help. I have an Acer Travelmate 2300 unit, my client dropped the machine and broke the power connector and the lcd open / close sensor. We have repaired the power connector and disabled the sensor and the machine worked for 1 week. The machine is now back and it won’t initialise meaning: The power lghts, hdisk, dvd etc spin up but nothing happens from there. I have replaced hdisk, ram, dvd, used external monitor nothing, all I get is the power light flashing from green to orange all the time. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
April 12th, 2006 at 1:43 pm
Hey Jason,
Have you reseated all connectors inside the laptop after it was dropped? It is possible that some connectors are not seated properly. I would try to reseat the CPU first, not sure if you have an easy access to it. I had a dropped laptop for repair in the past and it didn’t start because the CPU was half way out.
This morning I had to troubleshoot Toshiba Satellite P35 laptop with exactly the same symptoms. LED light fine, the fan is spinning, the HDD is spinning, the memory OK but nothing on the LCD screen and the external monitor. After I installed a test CPU the laptop started fine.
I’m not familiar with Acer laptop flashing code but it looks like you have some power issue on the system board. I believe it is just a bad connection.

Acer Aspire 1520: It started going really slowly tonight, so I thought hey I know I’ll run the recovery and ghost the OS back to the original state, see if that makes any difference. Trouble is, now it just shuts itself down after about 1-3 mins of use, which is not nearly enough time to run the recovery..it gets past the BIOS and will boot from the CD, but thats about it, locks up and shuts down after having copied about 100 megs. So I tried formatting with an old windows cd, and then tried to install windows that way, same problem, only after slightly longer this time. I reckon something is overheating somewhere, I took the panels away that are available to remove at the back, and none of those parts (memory and wirelesss card i guess) are hot at all. (not that I would expect the wireless card to be hot, but hey! i could get at that, so I checked
) I’m getting a really bad feeling about the whole thing, it’s about 2 months over the end of the warranty now, so i won’t be able to get it looked at that way…any suggestions??
April 30th, 2006 at 4:53 pm
Daniel,
I think your laptop shuts down because the CPU overheats. Another symptom of overheating – the laptop runs slower then usual. It might happen because the heatsink is clogged with lint or the CPU fan stopped working. I am not familiar with
Acer laptops but I guess it has some openings in the CPU area so the hot air can get out. Buy a can of compressed air and blow inside the openings. See if it will fix the problem.
Turn on the laptop and listen for fan to start spinning. The fan should start spinning before the laptop shuts down. If you cannot hear it then most likely the fan is bad and should be replaced.

I have a Acer Aspire, the battery is reconogized in the power meter in the control panel, but it will only work with the power adapter plugged in. I have replaced the original battery with a brand new one, still the same symptoms. After disassembling the laptop there is a 2 burnt chips, on the motherboard, not exactly sure if they are resistors, compacitors, or what exactly. The numbers on the component are: 4800B, W42B. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thank you
Curtis Peterson, ISA.

I have an Acer Aspire 3000 and I can’t seem to get the Wireless to work, no matter what I try. It worked fine every day for a year, but when I booted up this morning, nothing.
In Device Manager for the Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter I get the error “This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31).”
I tried uninstalling it and installing it with new drivers, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference. Any advice?
May 10th, 2006 at 9:32 pm
Mike,
Can you access the wireless card? First of all, I would try to reseat it. Just remove it from the slot and put it back. Overtime a wireless card connector pins can get oxidized and have to be cleaned.

I have the same problem as this guy
Have a problem with a ACER TravelMate 2300. System boots up goes into windows XP and then freezes after 5 mins of use or shuts down right away. Dont know if it is over heating however the fan is working fine and I cleaned the heatsink. After it freezes/shutsdown I can almost never get it to turn back on right away unless I wait 5 -10 mins.
June 9th, 2006 at 11:01 pm
Looks so much as an overheating problem! Here’s a guess. May be the thermal grease between the heatsink and the CPU is old and doesn’t conduct the heat anymore? Are you sure that the CPU fan is spinning?
Theoretically, this problem might occur because of a failing hard drive. You turn it on when it’s cool and after some time it’s getting hot. After the laptop shuts down, you have to wait some time until the HDD cools down.

June 11th, 2006 at 11:45 pm
James,
Usually you can re-image the hard drive if you use a restore CDs or DVD. I’m not sure how it works with Acer laptops. For example Toshiba, Dell, HP supply a recovery, restore media witch you can run to restore the laptop back to original factory settings. All you have to do – to insert the disk inside the laptop and make it boot from the DVD drive and follow the instructions. Some manufacturers (IBM for example) create a recovery partition on the hard drive and you can access it if you press F-key on startup.
Make sure to backup all important data from your hard drive. Everything would be erased if you re-image the drive.

I have an Acer Ferrari 3400. I’ve been trying to run the system and recovery discs and keep getting an error ar 15% complete. The application error is 19225. The symnatec ghost detected a corruption on an image file and it recommends an integrity check.
I’m lost. thanks
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:20 pm
Kasy,
I’m pretty sure that you’ve tried to clean up the CD with a soft cloth, so I mention it just in case. I’m not sure how Acer handles this. Have you tried to call them? May be you can buy new recovery discs or replace it for free if your laptop is still covered by warranty?

Hi!
Where i can find Toshiba Satellite 1410-802 recovery disk?
The sound does not work in my laptop.
Thank you!
August 7th, 2006 at 11:01 pm
Merle,
Have you tried calling to Toshiba and asking if they can sell you one? It shouldn’t be very expensive. One of my customers bought it like for $40. I think that’s a good price. But I’m nor really sure if they carry recovery disks for older models.
August 20th, 2006 at 10:15 am
We have an Acer Aspire 5002 which is back in for service again at the end of the one year warranty. In this first year it has broken down approximately every 3 months and has always seemed to run hot. The fan was replaced after 2 months, the motherboard after 4 months, the LCD screen and power cord after 7 months, and now at 11.9 months, it is in for a broken hinge which Acer says will not be covered by the warranty. My son (the user) has been careful with it and yet has had nothing but problems. Suffice to say, we will not buy another Acer. However, is there anywhere we can get repair documentation for this unit? If nothing else we can use it as a learning experience!
August 21st, 2006 at 9:59 pm
Beth,
That sounds strange that a broken hinge is not covered. If the laptop wasn’t abused and still under warranty, I would think it’s covered. Toshiba replaces broken hinges if the laptop is still under warranty.

September 24th, 2006 at 9:39 am
Vanessa,
If you search on eBay for “acer recovery CD” you’ll find it for about $15. I would contact the seller and ask if the CD will work for your model, even though they claim that the recovery CD is good for any laptop.

Hello
I have an Acer Travelmate 234XC. The problem I have is that I have a PCMCIA firewire card, which it detects. I then plug in my mini dv camera and it refuses to detect it. It found it once for about 3 minutes then lost it and won’t refind it. I have tested the card and cable and camera on another laptop and they all work fine. Is it the PCMCIA slot that is faulty or would it be a driver problem? If so, where can I get a driver?
Thank you very much.

I have an Acer Aspire 1640…
Periodically it will shutoff on its own, just flash off…
it acts somewhat like when a laptop overheats, but it doesn’t appear to be warm at all when it shuts off.
it will not turn itself off if the laptop is sitting on a desk or something else that doesn’t move, but if the laptop is on your lap or I pick the laptop up to move it around, it will shutoff..
I’m kind of thinking that something like the Ram could be lose, but nothing appeared to be loose when I opened it up…
any ideas? or should I call the Acer support before the warrenty is up… if its not already expired :-/
thanks in advance
October 15th, 2006 at 8:56 pm
A.H.
If the laptop is still under warranty I would defiantly call the tech support. If the warranty is over, I would try this. Remove all modules that you can access: hard drive, DVD drive, wireless card, battery. Even without these modules you still should be able to start the laptop and get some video on the screen. Move the memory into the second slot, if you have any. Try moving the laptop without all abovementioned modules. Does it still shut down?
If it’s stable and will not shut down anymore, install parts one by one and test the laptop after each step. Find out after which module it will start failing. It’s possible that simple reseating can fix the problem.
If yes, then you might have a loose cable connection somewhere on the system board or inside the display assembly. Further troubleshooting will require taking apart the laptop and reseating all cables.
BUT find out if you still have the warranty.

October 27th, 2006 at 5:48 pm
Max,
I just looked at the FRU manual for Acer Aspire 1800 and it’s not clear if the power jack is located on the motherboard, I think it is.
I think that it could be either a loose wire inside the power cord or the power jack is loose or broken. First of all, find a multimeter and check if the power on the AC adapter plug cuts off when you move the cord. If it does, you’ll have to replace the adapter. If the adapter is fine, then most likely it’s a power jack problem, it’s either broken or loose. To fix the problem it would be necessary to resolder or replace the power jack. The power jack problem is very common for Toshiba Satellite M35X, A70 and A75 notebooks. Check out the link and you’ll see what I mean.
November 4th, 2006 at 8:51 am
max,
I had the same problem with my Acer 1640’s power cable.
after about a week of it cutting in and out while I moved it around, it finally stopped connecting at all… so we called the Acer support, and they sent us a replacement power adapter within like 3 days…. and the new one worked fine, so your best bet is to call Acer support, and ask them..
November 6th, 2006 at 8:45 am
Hi i was hoping i could get some help please. my acer aspire 1360 switched itself off a couple of days ago and now it won’t come on at all like it’s not connected to a power source. i’ve tried a different acer power cord but it still doesn’t work. any ideas what the problem might be and just how big of a problem it is? i’m fervently hoping not to lose anything on my hard drive. Thanks for any suggestions in advance.
November 7th, 2006 at 12:09 am
Lol,
Do you see any LED activity when you plug in the AC adapter? What about the power LED, does it light up? Can you test the AC adapter with a multimeter, may be it’s bad?
November 16th, 2006 at 8:32 am
I have an ACer ASpire 1654 wlmi. The right hand speaker start buzzing and distorting. So I sent it into Acer for repair and they said its was one day out of warrinty. So now its going to cost me £96. I am a systems engineer and have sourced the part 23.T50V7.001 SPEAKER.SET.ZL1A.TM4500 from Germany for 13 Euro’s. So I am going to try myself.
Does anyone know how to remove the faulty speaker or even get inside the case? I presume you lift out the keyboard and work from there.
Thanks

hello. Is there a place where i can buy Acer recovery CDs cheap? I saw the ad on ebay about the one recovery disk working for all Acer computers but i’m a little skeptical… If anyone knows of a site or possibly a computer store where I can get the CDs, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

hi i have an acer travelmate and my hard drive is listed as none in the acer bios. i have been having trouble today starting up windows (it only started and froze in 1 of around 40 tries). also when it fails to start windows it gives a grey screen similar to the boot menu except it only lists the available boot devices which i have tried and none work. do i need to physically reconnect my hard drive (since it shows up as none on the BIOS and I am under the impression that there should be a hard drive name listed there, or does something else need to be done.
THANKS!

Chanel,
Have you tried calling ACER directly, may be you can buy it from them?
I’ve seen that before with Dell laptops. One recovery CD works for a few different models. The trick is that this CD installs only the operating system and doesn’t have any device drivers on it. After you install the operating system you still have to download and install all missing device drivers. That’s my guess.

Jihsan,
First of all I would try reseating the hard drive. Just disconnect it from the laptop and connect it back. Then you can download and run Hitachi drive fitness utility to test the hard drive and if the test fails I would replace the hard drive.
Most likely you have a faulty hard drive because a good hard drive should be recognized by the BIOS without any problem.
Find another laptop hard drive and see if it’s recognized by the BIOS. If you still have the same problem even with a new drive, it might be an issue with the controller on the motherboard.

Hi, i have the same problem as jishan here, i have two hard disks in my laptop but there is none shown in the bios.. & theres a ticking sound given off by the laptop which i suppose is the hard disk..

bk,
I had the same problem with a Dell laptop. The laptop had a CD-Rom drive installed but was missing the hard drive. For some reason the BIOS didn’t recognize the CD-Rom drive, I didn’t see it listed in the BIOS and wasn’t able to boot from it until I installed a new hard drive. After I installed the hard dive everything works just fine and I can see both devices in the BIOS. I believe both drives are connected to the same IDE cannel and it’s necessary to have both drives installed (working properly) or the BIOS will not see them.
I think you might have the same problem. Both hard drives in your laptop are connected to the same IDE channel and if one of the drives fails, both of them disappear from the BIOS. That’s my guess; please correct me if I’m wrong. Find a test hard drives and replace the drives in your laptop one by one. Check the BIOS after each step to find out with one is a failed drive.

Hello,
The hinges of my Acer Aspire 1300 have suddenly become really stiff. Would this require new hinges or would some lubrification do the trick?
With kind regards,

The problem: 2 weeks ago as my laptop aspire 1620 was in use and connected to the internet , suddenly run off having the following symptoms.
The symptoms: Main on-off button led stays on. Quick launch button for email also stays on as well as hard disk led is continuously on. The main processor fan is working but spining very slow. No response when i press the buttons. When i plugged out the battery and the dc supply the computer went off and when i press the main button to switch it on, for half second my computer seems that it is going to start up properly, but the same thing is happening again.
Notice: I plugged my USB FLASH LIGHT and i saw that it lights for the same time my computer is trying to start up and then goes off.
What i did so far: Pull out the hard disk , the dvd drive , the modem, the screen , the graphics card, the ram memories ,the keyboard, the small battery , the main battery and installed them again one by one trying to eliminate any problem .I checked for damages on the mainboard or for eletronic componets malfunctions but i did nothing. I also pull out dc supply and main battery and pressed the main button for 6 seconds for resetting.
What help do i need: Does anyone know how to proceed on my problem
Thank you in advance.

Hi all.
Got some trouble with my acer aspire 1452, it’s overheating but not enought too make it restart but enought for being annoying.
It has been on one trip to acer for service but the problem came back a few months after. They said that the heatsink was cleaned, and i’m thinking of doing the same thing at home.
Here comes the problem:
I can’t get all the screws out, there is a single screw just under the monitor that I cant reach, has anyone in here taken a acer apart and can give me directions?
Best regards John
January 17th, 2007 at 11:55 pm
dag pan,
Make sure the AC adapter outputs correct voltage. Can you get any video on an external monitor if you completely minimize the system and leave only the motherboard, graphics card, CPU and memory? Try both memory sticks one at a time in both slots.
If you still have no video even after the system is completely minimized, probably something is wrong with the motherboard.

My laptop is live again!!!!!!!
I almost don’t believe it….check out the crazy story underneath
On 01/02/2007 my laptop crashed and i decided to sent it for service on 01/05 friday after trying to fix it by myself.
Today i went to the service point and got my acer back because i got ungry with them for the delay of the repair. One week ago i ordered them to do nothing with it.The laptop didn’t go onto the bench for check. So when i took it on my hands i started visual examination for any damages and accidently pressed the main start button.
the laptop began to work and boot up easy easy but correct. In the meanwhile 2 beeps heard from the main board which is a kind of trouble diagnostic code.(i don’t know it. Does anyone know it?)
When i arrived at my home i reboot it and know problem. I also checked for errors thru the management tools of windows but the only thing that displays to me is one service control manager fault.
Really i don’t know what happend guys….but one thing i know from my experience as amateur electronic engineer. Electronics are getting crazy sometimes and i do have stories to tell.

Hi…I need help! I have an Acer Aspire 5100. I started having hard drive problems about a month ago. Acer sent me a new blank hard drive…I installed it, but everytime I try to run my recovery disks on it, it fails….It will go to about 30% complete, then it will give me an error saying “Restore failed! Reason: 0sf0000005. When it restarts it gives me another error that says “NTLDR is missing Press any key to restart. I am not very good with computers, so I am trying everything I know to do. The recovery disks that I have are the ones that I paid Circuit City to make. Any thoughts or suggestions??
February 11th, 2007 at 8:09 am
Suzie,
I think it could be a software related issue. Can you access the BIOS setup screen by pressing one of the function keys in the top row on the keyboard? I’m not sure exactly which one you should use for Acer laptops (try Esc, F1, F2). Can you boot the laptop into safe mode by pressing F8?
I’m just trying to figure out if the keyboard keys work fine before Windows starts loading. If it does, then it’s software problem.
If the keyboard keys do not work even in BIOS, then most likely it’s a hardware related problem. I’m not if you can take apart the laptop, but at the next step I would try reseating the keyboard and touch pad cables on the motherboard, maybe it’s just a loose connection.
Also check the BIOS settings (if you can access it of course). Set the BIOS to defaults. Check if there are any settings to enable/disable the internal keyboard/touch pad in the BIOS.
February 11th, 2007 at 8:18 am
Shey,
Make sure Acer sent you a good hard drive, you can test it with Hitachi’s drive fitness test utility. Download this utility, create a bootable floppy or CD disk and boot the laptop from it. Run an advanced test and see if the drive passes it.
I think it also could be a memory related issue. Test the laptop memory with Memtest86+. Use the same steps to prepare the media. Create floppy/CD, boot the laptop from it and the test will start automatically.

February 19th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
I have an ACER ASPIRE 1360 and I was re-installing windows, when the dvd/cd drive kept making a noise like a lawnmower ; ) … so it froze the windows installation and i turned it off. Next time round i turned the pc on and it got to about 27% of the install and it just suddenly shutdown, no noises, nothing. Next time around it did the same dvd/cd drive thing and i am not sure if this is an overheating problem, it does get quite hot quickly but i am not sure. Any help greatly appreciated!
February 19th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
Also, something i don’t understand is. Before i re-installed windows i had it running fine all the time i could play games on it too. It is only when installing windows that it does this.
P.S now it keeps just getting a little of the installation done then turning off.
February 19th, 2007 at 10:43 pm
John,
Have you tried reinstalling the operating system? I think it should be your next step.
February 19th, 2007 at 10:47 pm
Stuart,
I think it might be heat related issue. Buy a can of compressed air or find an air compressor and blow off the heat sink through the air intakes on the bottom (of sides). See if it makes any difference.
February 20th, 2007 at 10:00 am
Hey, I am pretty sure it is a heat related error as today it got to 75% and then shut down. Do you know where i could get the compressed air from? And do i just spray it into the air intake?
Thanks for your help
February 20th, 2007 at 10:23 am
Stuart,
You can find it in any local computer store. You spray air inside the intakes on the button and the dust will start coming out through the openings on the side.
I know that some people successfully cleaned the heat sink with a shop vacuum (some people say you can damage the laptop by static electricity when you are vacuuming, not sure about that).
I would go with air cleaning.

March 10th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
Anabel M. Leonor,
I am not familiar with Acer laptops and here’s a guess. From my experience, if the laptop has an internal DVD drive it cannot boot from the external DVD drive. The BIOS “doesn’t know” how to talk to the external drive because it wasn’t designed for it. You’ll have to find a new internal drive in order to reimage the hard drive.

Hello, i am having an issue with an Acer Travelmate 280.
It will boot up, but the screen with remain grey through everything. I can hear it run through Windows XP and boot up through the sound. But the screen won’t change.
March 20th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
Shana,
Test the laptop with an external monitor. If the external video is displayed normal, I assume there is nothing wrong with the video card or motherboard.
I would try reseating the video cable on both ends - motherboard and LCD scree, maybe it got loose somehow. If reconnecting the cable will not help, I would probably go ahead with replacing the cable. Maybe it’s bad. If still not luck, it’s possible you have an issue with the screen.
March 24th, 2007 at 6:29 am
Hi there, I am having a major problem with my Acer Travelmate 4000.
It wont turn on at all when the power button is pressed, sometimes it will randomly load up, but it is doing this less and less, and I havent been able to turn it on for a few days now. When it did load up, it loaded up normally.
When the Ac adapter is connected, the light at the front of it turns on to indicate the battery charging, but I still get no response even after charging for a few hours. I have tried turning it on directly with the AC adapter (without the battery), but I still get nothing.
Is it possible to be a problem with the switch and nothing to do witht the battery/adapter at all?!
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

help I have an Acer Aspire 5672 less than a yr old. the heat coming out of the right hand side is red hot as are the keys. how do i check the fan is not over heating. does the fan need to be cleaned in someway.
March 28th, 2007 at 9:53 am
hey did you get the problem sorted out with your laptop acer aspire 1670 because iv got the same problem and i dont know what to do.
March 28th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Fiona, you might try removing the battery and running the aptop on AC power for awhile. If the problem goes away then it might be that the battery is overheating and needs to be replaced. It should still be under warranty.

March 29th, 2007 at 5:21 am
Hello,
I was wondering if anybody out there knew how to open an acer travelmate 2100.
I took all the screws out, but there seems to be something else that holds it together. I don’t want to break it, so I’m asking first: are there any hidden latches I should know about?
Thanks!
BTW I’m trying to change the HD.

I have an ACER aspire 1670. When I switch it on it powers up for a couple of seconds and then turns itself off again. All the fans start up and the hard drive and the screen flickers a few times before turning off. I’ve tried removing various components (hard disk, dvd drive, ram etc) and nothing has helped. I’ve checked the connectors to the display which seem to seated correctly. I’ve also tried hooking it up to an external monitor with no luck. Any idea what may be causing this?
Any help appreciated. Thanks.
April 2nd, 2007 at 8:58 pm
Adrian,
Minimize the system. Unplug the LCD from the motherboard. Remove all components (battery, DVD drive, wireless card, hard drive, etc…) and leave only three main components: motherboard (with video card if it’s not integrated), CPU and known good memory module. Test the laptop with an external monitor. If the laptop still shuts down, it’s likely that you have a bad motherboard.

I have an Acer Aspire 1642wmli and I’ve broken my LCD screen. I can replace it myself but am having a hard time finding a dealer to sell me one.
Does anyone have recommendations? Thanks.
April 22nd, 2007 at 10:05 pm
Peter,
I would run the memory test first (when you can start the laptop). Very often this problem is caused by a faulty memory module. If you have two memory modules, remove them one by one. Test the laptop with only one memory stick in place.
Also test the laptop with both memory stick in the slot A and then in the slot B. If the laptop works fine with both RAM modules installed in the slot A but freezes when they are installed in the slot B, you might have a faulty memory slot. One guy suggested cleaning the contacts inside the memory slot with an alcohol wipe, of course when the AC adapter is unplugged and battery is removed.

April 24th, 2007 at 10:30 pm
jo corrigan,
It’s hard to guess what is wrong at this point. It could be either software or hardware related issue. Can you start the laptop from a bootable CD or DVD disk (recovery disk for example)? Does the drive recognize this disk at all?
I do not troubleshoot software issues because it might takes hours to figure out what is wrong. In cases like this I reinstall the operating system from scratch and if the same problem appears again even with a new software load, it’s a hardware related issue, probably a faulty CD/DVD drive.
April 25th, 2007 at 1:11 am
all my other discs seem to work so i think i might just have to try yet another type of disc to burn, im obviously not buying the right ones, thanks a lot for your help

Hello there,
I wrote back in March 29th asking about how to remove the hard drive on a travelmate 2100. I found out later that you don´t answer questions regarding acer laptops (so, sorry about that).
Anyway, it turns out, to remove the hard drive you just need to take out the battery and pull on the little plastic tab that you see in the middle.
I had to take apart the whole laptop to find this out, ’cause I didn’t want to pull too hard before I knew what it was for. I just thought this may be useful for someone else in the same situation.
Cheers

Try cleaning the heatsink and fans with compressed air (you can buy it in any local computer store), just blow it inside the openings on the bottom or sides of the laptop.

July 27th, 2007 at 5:06 pm
Hey, maybe like 5 hours ago my Acer Travelmate 2300 just turned itself off. I started it up, only to find out that it wasn’t recognizing my power cord.
I started up an hour later, thinking it might have overheated, yet I booted it up, and it still wasn’t recognizing it. The AC adaptor light also wasn’t on. I restarted it, and the AC adaptor light was flashing on and off.
Maybe five minutes ago, I tried starting it up once again, yet it didn’t even try. The AC adaptor light flashed on and off, and now I am getting very frustrated.
A while ago, my dad owned this Acer, and the casing around the power cord was ripped up, yet the wiring inside was left untouched. It’s been working since then, yet today it screwed up.
Please, someone, help!!!!!
Thank you SO much in advance, seeing as I think my girlfrind my be a little upset with me right now and she is not answering her phone and we usually talk on MSN messenger.
