I can’t get a service guide that shows how to remove/replace the failed CD/DVD on an Inspiron 1000.
The site you list will give you a user’s manual and a guide to replacing the hard drive — but nothing about replacing cd/dvd. Presumably that info ids in a service manual that doesn’t appear to be available online — not at the site listed.
March 26th, 2006 at 9:44 pm
Dell has a lot of service manuals available online. Some of these manuals do not cover all disassembly steps, like in your case. Some of these manuals cover everything, like Dell Inspiron 1100. Try to find a model similar to yours. I hope it helps.

I see where you can purchase a second disk drive for D810 laptops, but I don’t see in the service manuals where the secondary disk drive is located or how to install. Is this second drive internal or external? If it is internal, where would installation instructions be?
April 24th, 2006 at 9:08 pm
Hi Michael,
Here is my guess. Most likely you can install the second hard drive instead the existing DVD/CD-Rom drive. After a quick search on ebay I was able to find the second hard drive enclosure for Dell Latitude D810 series. You install the drive inside the laptop you have to remove the optical drive first.

Hey i have this dell inspiron 1300 and it seems that the power works, the battery works, everything seems to work…but when i turn the comp on and wait about 5-10 secs as it loads up the computer Shutsdown/cuts out …Help pLz…!!
May 1st, 2006 at 9:08 pm
Adrian,
Check if the heatsink is clean and the cooling fan spins. It is possible that your laptop overheats.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000, that needs the power jack replaced. I’ve found the part, but I was wondering if anyone had a guide to replacing them. Is it as simple as sodering it in the 3 pins and voila?
May 9th, 2006 at 1:32 pm
I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 that has an overheating problem. I suspect that the dust is collecting inside. I also want to upgrade the CPU on my laptop from 2.8 Ghz to 3.06. Is that possible?
May 9th, 2006 at 10:58 pm
John,
I am not sure if you can upgrade the CPU in this laptop, but do you really want to do it? I think you will not see a big difference in performance between 2.8GHz and 3.06GHz. If you want to speed up the laptop you can go with more memory or a faster hard drive. If you replace 4200 RPM or 5400 RPM hard drive with 7200 RPM, you’ll see a big improvement.
June 10th, 2006 at 7:40 pm
My Inspiron 1000 shuts off at random intervals. The local tech guy thinks the AC plug jack solder has come loose, but said the dual layer motherboard would not give him room to get to it to fix it. Is there anyone in Central or Southern Ohio that is certified to fix this?
Thanks much.

Does anyone know how to tighten the lid on a dell latitude C540/C640
The lid does not stay up easily and keeps falling all the way open/shut. I tool the whole thing apart…but there are no screws to tighten the hinges.
Thanks ahead of time.
Jon
July 26th, 2006 at 6:58 pm
Jon,
You can get a service manual for Dell Latitude C540/C640 here. There are some instructions for removing the display assembly, it would be useful if you want to tighten the lid or replace the hinges.

i have dell laptop inpiron 1300 how to remove bios password?
August 2nd, 2006 at 5:11 am
Talking without looking at anything:
Shathi, do you know the password? If so
1) You get into the bios (F1 or F2 or F12) at the Bios boot screen (before ANY windows related info hits the screen, just start tapping it once a second from when the computer turns on till when it says “Entering bios”)
2) find the section that refers to security and then find the part that refers to the password (there are usually 2, one for entering the bios…and one for starting the computer)
3) If you don’t see something that says “remove me” then simple goto change and change the password to nothing (that is dont type anything and hit accept /enter to choose to a null password
If you DON”t know the password…then its a little harder…hopefully you do
August 2nd, 2006 at 5:15 am
Thank you for the manual, I finally figured out that I needed to remove the rubber nubs to get to the screws…So you can’t tighten these hinges if you have a loose hinge problem.
Does anyone know if/where you can purchase replacement hinges…nothing else special, just the hinges?
August 2nd, 2006 at 11:05 pm
Thank you for the manual!!!… I need to change the cmos battery on a Inspiron 1200, now I can do it…
August 19th, 2006 at 5:33 pm
Okay here goes. I recently purchased new memory for my Dell Latitude laptop model CPx. after installation nothing happened. Got a hold of seller from ebay, told me to try them one at a time to confirm both were operational.
The computer booted up for two seconds and read as follows. “The amount of system memory has changed.
Well the next thing you know I’m staring at this screen asking my to enter the HDD password for authentication. That is truly something new for me.
It has “Hard-disk #*********-595B” on the screen. I saw some other questions about this earlier. I’m no genius, but i don’t carry a book on cracking security codes on laptops. Any help out there for this Dell user wishing he never bought more memory……………….
August 21st, 2006 at 9:53 pm
Thomas,
If the laptop is asking for a hard drive password you’ve never set, then I would try to upgrade/re-flash the BIOS. I know that this problem might occur on some Toshiba laptops and it might ask you for the HDD password (assuming that you never set it up) when the hard drive is going bad. On Toshiba laptops the problem could be fixed by upgrading the BIOS version. I’m not sure if it works on Dell laptops.
August 23rd, 2006 at 1:54 pm
My Inspiron started randomly shutting off when I would touch the screen (the screen and wireless card will shut off but the power light remains on). It gradually got worse and worse, and today stopped turning on at all. The battery and power cord have both been checked and are working fine. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be?
August 23rd, 2006 at 8:15 pm
Ashley,
I think that your problem is related to a loose connection or a bad video cable. I think it’s possible that the video cable disconnected from the screen of from the motherboard. The only way to troubleshoot it is to open up the laptop and take a look on the cables and connectors.
BTW, do you get any video if you connect an external monitor?
August 28th, 2006 at 4:17 pm
Ashley,
you are expeiencing what many of us are suffering from. It is a flaw in the Dell laptops design. Basically there is an overheating problem which puts out excessive heat that is higher than a motherboard is supposed to be exposed to over long periods of time. The heat over time has cracked connection points. There are websites that give instructions how to find and solder these connections back together. hope this helps.
September 12th, 2006 at 2:07 pm
my dad has given me his dell inspiron 3800 to look at.
it does not boot and and does not get to post.the power light stays on for a 5 secs then stops, the fan does not spin, and the display shows nothing…any ideas ?
i have tried checking all the cables inside, because i thought it might be that.but still no luck, the cable and battery have been tested in another laptop and work fine.
any help at all would be great
September 12th, 2006 at 11:28 pm
Kurt,
The first thing to check would be the memory module. Try to reseat the module, remove if from the socket and insert back. Try moving it into another slot. Borrow the memory module from another laptop and install it into the failed laptop.
Remove the battery and wait for a minute. Try to start the laptop from AC power without the battery. Make sure that the AC adapter is fine and works properly.
September 13th, 2006 at 3:47 pm
have tried all of them things and no luck
thank you for responding
September 13th, 2006 at 8:09 pm
Kurt,
You can try to minimize the system to the bare minimum and leave just three essential parts – the main board, the CPU with cooling module and the memory. Connect an external monitor and turn the laptop on. If you still get nothing on the external screen, then most likely the system board is bad, assuming that you use a working memory.
October 4th, 2006 at 3:04 pm
I have a Dell inpiron 9200 that has recently developed a display problem. I now have a faint flickering 45mm column at the right hand portion of the LCD. All around it, the display is fine. There is one 45mm column to the right of the troubled one, and it is OK.
I suspect this is a memory problem, but have been unable to locate any information on the web.
The laptop is out of warranty (of course!) so I’m hoping to find and fix myself.
I’ve run diagnostics, which all pass. The display “behind” the column is visible and readable.
Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!
Thanks!
Douglas
October 5th, 2006 at 9:11 am
Douglas,
I thinks that’s a screen problem. Start the laptop with an external monitor connected to the VGA port. Check the video output on the external monitor. Most likely it would be normal, without any lines. Is it? So, it’s not a memory problem because a failed memory would affect both screens – the laptop LCD screen and the external monitor.
Let me know how it goes.
October 6th, 2006 at 6:58 am
Hi.
Thanks for the reply, and the suggestion. I tried an external monitor - and as you predicted, the image was just fine. Is this good news or bad news? Does this mean the LCD is bad? Is this a common occurrance? What might be the cause of the failure? What do you suggest as to my next step in getting this resolved?
Many thanks in advance!
Douglas
October 6th, 2006 at 2:23 pm
Douglas,
It looks like a bad LCD screen to me.
A failed video cable usually affects the video output on the entire screen, not just a part of the screen. So it’s not the video cable problem.
You still have a backlight, so it’s not FL inverter failure.
The video on the external screen is fine, so it’s not the motherboard/video card failure.
The only part left is the LCD screen. In my opinion, the screen is bad and must be replaced to fix the video issue.

I have a problem with my dell inspiron 710m, the screen display suddenly turns very shady and everything is just hard to read. Also all the desktop icons tend to be so large. It says something about the BIOS and about upgrading the display drive. Can anyone help me with this? I tried to find out how to solve it but still in no luck.
October 15th, 2006 at 11:29 am
Anna,
Have you tried reinstalling the video driver? You can find the driver on the Dell Support website in the Drivers and Downloads section. You have to enter your laptop model and then the operating system installed on your laptop. After that you’ll get a list of downloads available for your computer. Download and install the video adapter driver and see if it fixes the problem.

I have a dell Latitude D505, It will not accept a charge. The problem started with my AC adapter, when adapter plugged into wall the power light lit up indicating that there was power running thru it. Once it was plugged into my computer and the connection had made full contact, the adapter light went out. It would then still work by charging with my port replicater and would charge that way. About a month later, I began to have the same problem with my replicator, once I connected my laptop the power lights would go out on my replicator. My computer will start and function properly with a charged battery, but I am unable to charge my batteries or run on AC. Any suggestions or comments on what may be creating this problem? Thanks

My 4 yr old inspiron 8500 has been working fine until last weekend. The screen flickers with vertical strips. Seems like when I pick up the laptop the lines jump around and flicker more than when it’s just sitting there. I connected to external monitor and get the same flickering. This problem occurs pretty much from boot up .. even affects the text output that you see when the computer first boots up .. shows the text chars fine but the vertical lines are vertical colored lines. Anyway, I opened up the computer.. took out and reseated the memory as well as the video card. That didn’t help. Yesterday I was able to operate for about 20 mins without any flickering (didn’t move the computer at all) then started pressing around the panel with the power button (and status lights) and picked up the computer a bit and the lines and flickering started again. I’m guessing the video card is bad or the connections are bad. Any way I can fix this? Could this be the “cracked connection points” mentioned above? If so, where can I find info about this? (Searched google and didn’t find anything)

HI,MY DELL INSPIRON 2200 LAPTOP DOES NOT UPDATE TIME & DATE AFTER SHUTTING DOWN & POWER UP. IS THIS A BATTERY PROBLEM?
November 29th, 2006 at 10:42 pm
Kristen,
Today I am experiencing that exact same problem. My Inspiron 8600 will not charge. My AC adapter lights up and seems to be fine on its own.
As soon as I plug in the adapter into my laptop, I can hear a very light popping sound, and the light on my adapter immediately goes out. The laptop is not charging, but starts up and functions fine with the battery.
I took the entire thing apart into pieces, and looked for parts that might be loose or something in need of soldering. But no luck there. Also, I tried using another charger from a friend, but the problem persist.
I am beginning to fear a motherboard problem (with the charging or power circuit). Any suggestions or ideas are welcome!
November 30th, 2006 at 11:46 pm
Mike,
The same bad video appears on both laptop screen and external monitor. Sounds like a faulty video card. Unfortunately I know just one way to fix the problem – replace the video card.
November 30th, 2006 at 11:49 pm
Gerald,
Most likely just a bad RTC (CMOS) battery and the problem will be fixed after you replace the battery.

I have a Dell Latitude L400. On both Win 98 and Win 2000 the internal LCD shows an alias on the left part of the screen (similar to a shifted overlap between odd and even rows) only if the applications run in full-screen mode (everithing goes right if not in full screen). It also happens that when the Windows taskbar autohides the whole desktop shifts down leaving a white strip on the higher part of the screen. At the same time everithing displays correctly on the external monitor. Any idea of the possible fault (I still tried with updated BIOS and video drivers but the problem remains)

Thanks!

Jay you mentioned (answer 25):
Can you point me to these sites ?
My Dell Inspiron 8600 monitor has gone black and the external monitor intermittently flickers and turns blue. When I jiggle the external monitor cable it fixes the external monitor problem temporarily.
Tried replacing inverter and LCD cable - but no success.
I suspect there is a cracked connection on the motherboard. This could be causing inverter to shut down into safe mode and also cause external screen to flicker/go blue.
BUt I need instructions on how to fix ! The Inspiron 8600 Service manual stops at the point where you need to get access to the rear ports. I took everything else apart but couldnt get access to the rear ports. Any help appreciated ?
Thanks

Run memory diagnostics test, I usually use Memtest86+ utility. You might have a failed memory module. You’ll find a link to this utility in the “Links” on the right pane.

Jeremy,
I think I found the problem with my laptop. It always keeps charging the battery eventhough it is actually full.
If you remove the battery and measure voltage on the motherboard’s terminal( between pin 6(19.??V) and 1(GND) always). It should not charge the battery since it not plugged in. I did compare this on my good one(I have two identical ones) and it read ~1V.
I think there is the problem on motherboard’s charging circuit but I can not find anywhere for the schematic to identify the source of problem. I would appreciate it if you or someone could provide a schematic for the DELL LATITUDE C610. Thanks

I have a Dell D510 that I would like to fim on my on. While I was useing it I saw that it was running off battery power only even when pluge into outlet. Most likely you have a failed screen inverter. Here are instructions for replacing the inverter board. The guide is made for an IBM notebook but it will not be much different for a Dell notebook.

Sunshinedelight,
Last week I posted instructions for taking apart screen on Dell Latitude D610. I don’t think it would be much different from Inspiron 510m and disassembly steps should be almost the same.

Dan Kelley,
Test RAM. Download Memtest86+ utility, create a bootable floppy or CD disk and boot the laptop from this media. The test will start automatically. I think you might have a bad memory stick. If you have two memory stick installed into your notebook, remove them one by one. Try starting the laptop with only one RAM module installed, try both memory slots.
If the memory passes, test the hard drive. You can use Hitachi’s drive fitness test. Run an advanced test.
You’ll find links to both utilities in the “Links” on the right pane.

sorry to say but I think you are right, it looks like a problem with the motherboard. If you have the same problem even with another power adapter, there has to be something wrong with the main board. Probably you’ll have to replace the board.
February 18th, 2007 at 10:09 am
Sam,
could you please provide more details, your question is not very clear. You hardly can see anything only on the laptop LCD screen (probably bad inverter board) or on the external monitor (might be a problem with the motherboard). Why did you mention the VGA port?

I have a Inspiron 1150 that had a problem with the computer starting up, the CAPS lock key flashing, then shutting down. I figured out that it was a motherboard problem, so I just installed a new motherboard… Unfortunately, now, it boots up the fan spins, but then it just shuts off. Any ideas?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1200, and the Fan has died. Where can I purchase a replacement? Also, it has intermittent trouble charging even though the battery and AC adaptor are both working fine. I believe it is the connection between the adaptor and the computer. (The DC in port). How would I go about re-seating or reparing it?
February 25th, 2007 at 2:36 am
Philip L,
You can find a replacement fan on eBay, just search for “Inspiron 1200 fan”. If the power jack is located on the motherboard you will have to remove the motherboard from the laptop and re-solder the jack.

I have a Dell inspiron 710m laptop. Its been abt 15 months old now. My screen randomly turns out completely black every now and then. We can feel that the processor is still running. I have to shut down the pc. Even if I turn it on again, theres non display except black screen though the processor is still running. I have to wait for few min to an hour to restart it. Can anyone advice me, what the problem might be???
Thanks, in anticipation

My wife’s Dell Inspiron 1000 has a problem with the power plug. The one in the laptop. It’s loose, and if you don’t have the external power adapter plugged in just right, it falls back to the battery. The battery sucks, and only holds about a 15 minute charge.
I don’t believe its under warranty anymore, and want to fix it myself. I used to work at Dell testing laptops (and taking them apart), but never worked with an Inspiron.
Does anyone know where I can get an exploded view of the assembly? They used to have these on their webpage for other laptops, but I can’t find them anymore.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 — it was working fine for the last 2 years — overheating problems a few times but worked fine again once it cooled down. But for the last few days, every time I turn it on with the AC adapter, the screen goes black. I can hear the processor and fan still running however.
I can turn it on with just the battery and then connect the adaptor to charge though.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?
March 3rd, 2007 at 9:11 am
crazy4u,
Take a closer look at the screen when it turns off. Is it completely black or you still can see a very faint image?
If the image is still there, most likely you have a faulty screen inverter.
March 4th, 2007 at 8:12 pm
Hi cj2600,
Thanks for the advice…
Yes, I can stil see a very faint black out screen…though I can figure out easily that it isnt as black as it should be when the machine is completely off. But it boots up properly sometimes and works fine for an hour or so…you touch it or move it a bit here n there n off goes the screen though the processor still running…
I will check out the screen inverter…
Do you have any idea how much the faulty screen inverter cost?
Thanks.

hi the problem will be on the motherboard. Let me help u identiy what to look for. first take out the keyboard, now u should be looking at the monitor connection one the motherboard. are you with me… i think you are now good… if you look in front of that you in the direction ot the power button you will see some little connections on the mother board they are very fine. you will see two identical ones which are vertical and then another 2 identical ones which are also vertical but smaller than the first two. the you will see one larger one which will be horisontal. Good now that we identiy the are we are looking in look at the first two vertical ones. more than likely the second one in slightly burnt out or bad. The problem could be any one of those but more than likely the second one. i know thich cause mine was burned out

Got this problem with ma Dell Inspiron 1300 .That laptop just restarts on shut down .i thought it was a virus then formatted HD and put fresh XP install but with no luck .
What do u guys think abt this ?
March 9th, 2007 at 3:02 am
The problem is the dc jack. After a certain ammount of time of pulling the power cord ina nd out of the back of the laptop, the jack becomes loose from the motherboard.
I purchased a new dc jack, they are easy to find, i got mine from ebay. Then you have to remove motherboard and resolder jack onto motherboard. I hope this helps.

My last post was for the people having trouble with there power input.
I can now see the topic is about shutting down. I also had the same prob.
Then carefully remove chip from heatsink and re grease the top of the chip and replace it back into its slot. Then replace heatsink. Hopefully this will sort the heat problem out and stop it from restarting
I took the casing off and removed the heatsink. The processor chip will prob be stuck onto it because of heat. I then sucked out all the dust which had clogged up all around the chip and heatsink etc, It was a lot by the way

I accidentally spilt a little beer on a Dell Inspiron 5100. I do not want to take it in for repair because it is older and was a friend’s who gave it to me because he bought a new laptop. I was going to disassemble it and try to clean the parts and then let dry. Any advice on how to do this, or if this is a bad idea what I should do. Thanks.

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. My fan went off a couple of days ago after running noisily for about a year now. I bought a new fan for $20 from parts-people.com. They have all the Dell parts you need for a pretty decent price. I went to the Dell website and followed the manual about how to get into the computer fan. Followed the steps from Dell’s website to rip off the laptop and guess what it worked. I assembled everything again and now the new fan is running like a breeze. I can’t even believe that I could do that myself.
March 10th, 2007 at 9:00 am
crazy4u,
First of all make sure it’s not just a loose cable. Reseat cables on both sides of the inverter board.
BTW, I found a new inverter for Dell Inspiron 710m for about $45 on ebay.

I have an old Dell Inspiron 2650 that has ceased to boot regularily. I know the main battery is dead, and has been for some time, but as I use it plugged in this was not a problem… Now it takes about 10 tries to boot to windows. Most often, the drives spin up, and I don’t get to the Dell/BIOS screen. Sometimes it gets to the splash screen then freezes, and sometimes it gets as far as windows before dying. Because my BIOS data (when I am able to get into it) is consistently dead, I suspect it is a CMOS Battery issue. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any info on where to locate a CMOS battery in my system, so I don’t know if I am barking up the wrong tree. I followed advice found on this site, and re-seated all the components, based on the attitude that the non-functioning laptop couldn’t get more non-functioning if I messed up, but it still does exactly the same thing…

The problems with my Inspiron 1150 has changed or increased since the last 2 weeks [ post #81]
Now everytime I turn the AC power on — the screen goes black, it’ll still charge the battery though. It turns on fine with battery, but the screen flickers a LOT and if I increase the brightness to high– screen goes black again.
I tried looking at the screen with bright lights and I can still see a faint outline, so I’m thinking my screen doesn’t actually shut down– it just doesnt like to be on high brightness or on AC power….
Can somebody please help me???
March 13th, 2007 at 11:49 am
T:
Sounds like a screen inverter issue to me. Check to make sure the cables inside the screen aren’t loose, and - failing that - consider replacing the inverter.
Also, how would I go about re-soldering the DC-in jack, as I have narrowed it down to just that. I’m having trouble removing the motherboard to get to the DC-in jack.

I Have a Dell Inspiron 3800 and I am having the ac adapter turning off problem, but without the small pop as i plug it in. This laptop is old and so i disected it to see if i could find and burnt out parts or anything at all. Just for the heck of it, i plugged just the motherboard in, the light stayed on. So i plugged another part in, it stayed on. Now i found out that when i plug in a board, with everything else in, the ac adapter shuts off instantly. I had the monitor, harddrive, everything except this board, it is in the middle of the motherboard, directly beneath the keyboard, and when i put it into its slot, the AC adapter trips. What is this board and what does it do? Could this be a solution, replace it, not the entire motherboard? Thanks

Thank you for this site. I was able to replace the keyboard on my Dell laptop thanks to the manuals. I had searched the Dell site on my own previously, but did not find what I needed until I found your site!!

Hi,
I have a problem with a C610 - On start up, the fan starts as normally, the caps led is illuminated and after about 5 seconds it simply cuts out. Laptop picks up the power supply and continues the charge the battery even after it cuts out.
Is this a motherboard issue do you think? If so, I have a spare motherboard, but this came from a computer that had a boot password on - would the password transfer to the computer if I changed the motherboard?
Glad there’s a point of call for us rookies!! Any help very much appreciated, thanks in advance, Victoria.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 it is about 2.5 years old. Recently, I have had difficulty getting the computer to turn. I push the power button and the LEDs light up also the blue light on the far right LED flickers. Then, nothing. THe power light stays on for a few seconds and then goes off. The LEDs next to the power button also flash. Sometimes, after I have tried turning the power on and off a few times, the machiine will turn on, go through POST start windows and everything is fine. However, on a couple of times immediately after POST, I got an error message that said something like “read/write error” and on the next line “decreased amount of available memory”
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone figured out a solution to the AC adapter turning itself off after being plugged into the computer? I’m using an inspiron 8200 and my batter does not seem to charge… ever and most of the time the AC adapter will turn itself off once its plugged into the computer.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:16 pm
Josh,
I’m not sure witch board you are talking about. I just looked that the Inspiron 3800 manual and didn’t see any board under the keyboard. BUT, if the laptop fails after you install this board, probably that’s your problem.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:29 pm
Victoria,
You’ll have to go through some troubleshooting steps. Remove all devices you can access - battery, DVD drive, wireless card, hard drive, etc… If the laptop still shuts down, probably there is something wrong with the motherboard. You tried starting the laptop from the battery alone and it didn’t work either, right?
If you cannot clear the password by unplugging the RTC battery, then it will not go away after you replace the motherboard. I don’t know how to get rid of the boot password on Dell laptops.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Brian,
Could be a memory related problem. Try reseating the memory module, move it from one slot to another. If you have two RAM modules installed, remove them one by one and try starting the laptop with only one module in place. Make sure the contact on the RAM modules are clean.
Finally, find a known good memory stick and test the laptop again.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:41 pm
Joel,
Try Crucial.com
I use Crucial memory a lot. It’s not expensive and reliable. I really recommend it.
March 29th, 2007 at 10:05 pm
Ab,
It could be just a software/settings related issue.
1. Make sure the speakers are not muted
2. Check if the volume control is turned on
3. Reinstall the audio driver
4. Reinstall Windows
If you still have no sound even after reinstalling the operating system and loading the audio driver, most likely there is a problem with the audio board.

John,
Try to remove the battery and then plug AC adapter in.
If the problem goes away, then there is the problem with your motherboard(charging circuit). I found the problem with my Dell latitude C610 but I can not find anywhere for it’s schematic to fix this problem. If you happen to have or know where to find this schematc, please give me a copy.

Black Screen after Windows XP boot up — but safe mode works.
My Dell Inspiron 8500 just started having this problem. I turn it on and the Windows XP starts to boot up normally (colors, scrolling dash, etc.). Then, when it would normally go into the page where I select the user, the screen goes black. I can see that it is still processing, but the LCD does not show anything and is completely black. I am able to use the computer in the “safe mode”, but it doesn’t serve all my purposes then. Please help if you have suggestions. Thanks…
April 2nd, 2007 at 9:17 pm
Bob,
Sounds like a software related problem.
Try this. Boot the laptop into safe mode and use the system restore utility to take it back to a working state. I don’t remember if you can run system restore in safe mode so try it.
I think you can start the laptop in VGA mode (everything is loaded except the video driver) and uninstall the video driver. Then download it from the manufacturer’s website and install again.
April 3rd, 2007 at 1:06 pm
CJ2600,
Thanks so much for the advice — I did try to do a system restore back 3 weeks and it still didn’t work. However, I will try to uninstall the video driver and reinstall a new one from the manufacturer’s site. Since I can run the laptop using a docking station on a separate monitor, I don’t see a problem with uninstalling the video driver. Any other words of wisdom would also be appreciated. Thanks again…

Ok, Here is what I did:
I took the stock Inspiron 1150 Processor (1.3GHz?) and swapped it out for a 2Ghz (2GHZ/128/400) Processor.
It was SUPER fast loading WinXP Pro, booted fine, all that good stuff. Then it would not load, start, nothing.
It would not even turn the screen on.
It sounds like it is going through the POST test, but then it will auto shut off. Didn’t even access the DH.
So…. I replaced the original processor, hoping that maybe it was just the system not liking the processor (didn’t get a chance to update BIOS).
No dice.
Any ideas?

I have a dell latitutde l400 which I suspect has a bad fan. I opened it up and powered on. The fan spins during a cold boot but then stops (right about the WIndows splash screen pops up).
Can someone verify this is abnormal behavior (or disabuse me of this notion)? Is there some other explanation for the machine suddenly switching off after about 10 minutes?
TIA

I too need the output pin-out (19.5V) for the dell 5150 power supply.
there seem to be 3 pins. Which of the 2 are to be used? I get power from the outer diamiter to the inner diamiter but the small pin seems to be dead to the other two.

April 10th, 2007 at 10:14 pm
Gohan,
Try uninstalling and installing the wireless card driver. If it doesn’t help, reseat the wireless card, just remove it from the slot and put it back. It’s possible that contacts on the card got oxidized and the card doesn’t make a good connection with the slot.
Check if the wireless card connection settings (manual IP address, encryption key, etc…) are correct, maybe they got changed somehow.
April 10th, 2007 at 10:33 pm
Myron O. Camps,
If you want to narrow down the problem, you’ll have to disassemble the laptop. Remove all devices (battery, hard drive, DVD drive, etc…) one by one until you have only motherboard (with video card), CPU and memory left. If the laptop still goes off after 6-8 seconds, it’s possible that the motherboard has been damaged by the liquid spill. If the laptop works fine when it’s minimized, start installing devices and test it after each step until you find a faulty part.
Make sure to reseat the memory module. If you have only one module installed try moving it from one slot to another.
Reseat all cables and connectors.

My Dell 9300 has stopped charging. It functions fine while plugged in, but it will not charge batteries. I have no fear opening it up for I have repaired a few laptops in my day. Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened?
P.S. I just discovered my warranty expired 2 months ago when the problem began, GRR.
April 14th, 2007 at 10:32 am
For the people whose Inspiron 8500 and 8600 won’t charge the battery… you probably need to replace the motherboard. When my 8500 was under on-site warranty, the technician mentioned that some part of the motherboard battery circuitry degraded over time. He didn’t know whether it was the charging or monitoring circuitry, but Dell handled it as a board swap. My second motherboard was acting flaky two or three months after the swap (and the tech swapped it out twice before settling on this one), so it’s very likely that a replacement will croak too - it’s just a matter of time. I’ve seen external battery chargers for $71 to $95 and ‘like new’ (meaning working) motherboards (without processor) for $25 to $200. I think $71-95 is ridiculous for a battery charger given that a charger that plugs directly into the laptop can be found for $35, but taking the machine apart to replace the motherboard is time consuming and is only a temporary solution. One way or the other, you’re screwed…

Wuckman,
Make sure you are using a correct AC adapter. I have a Dell Latitude C840 notebook myself, but instead of 19V-4.5A adapter I’m using 19V-3.5A adapter, as a result my CPU always runs slower. I believe instead of 1.8GHz it runs at 1.2GHz. I tested my laptop with a correct adapter and the CPU went back to 1.8GHz, so in my case it happens because I’m using an incorrect adapter.

I have a Dell C840. The screen is so loose that it just free-falls. How do I fix this? (tighten?) Thanks.
April 24th, 2007 at 11:07 pm
Doug Stone,
If the screen will not stay in the normal position and just falls, probably you have broken hinges. You’ll have to replace both hinges.
I just searched on eBay for “latitude C840 hinges” and found entire hinge/bezel/latch assembly just for $25. I think that’s a really good price. Dell instructions will help you to transfer the display, cable and inverter.
April 28th, 2007 at 9:35 am
Hi guys, I bought a used dell latitude d510 a few weeks ago. When I was at the guys house the computer seemed to be working great. 2 days later I tried using it for the first real time.
At first windows would load and after a little while the screen would become very pixelated, large chunks (maybe 5×20 pixels horizontally) would form in the graphics that looks like a bad dvd decoding. eventually they would consume the whole screen. sometimes moving a window or getting the start up menu to pop up clears the chunks temporarily, then the form in the clear space again.
Then after a week or so the chunky pixels problem began to occur immediately after the laptop was turned on, even the Dell logo/bios start up was messed up. After the boot, I could do the window move thing and sometimes it would temporarily clear the chunks back to normal in the section (of the desktop) behind the window. As usual the chunks would form again.
Here is a link to the picture I took with my phone:
In the picture you can see that the bad image is also exactly the same on my TV out.
If this is a bad video card issue could you please share a link to a tutorial on how to remove, clean and replace the video card?
I also installed the latest video drivers as posted on the dell support/download section of their site.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Raulcheeba,
When you get the same video defect on both internal and external screen, most likely it indicates a problem with the video card. I’m not sure 100% but I think in your laptop the video card is integrated into the motherboard. If the video card is bad you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard. Here are instructions for Dell Latitude D510 notebook.

Hello,
I have a Inspiron 6000 notebook, and the LCD becomes very dark a few seconds after I start it up. It works fine if I connect the s-video to another lcd screen. From reading about similar issues above, I have gathered that my problem is likely the inverter. I saw in post 66 that someone had taken apart their D610. Do you know if I would follow the same steps for my 6000? Also, what is the ‘backlight’? And could that possibly be the issue with my laptop?
Thanks You, khil22.
May 26th, 2007 at 9:15 am
I have read all topics relating to display problems. Here is my problem. The display does not work.
I can see everything on the screen, but the text and icons are unreadable.
In my opinion everything is unreadable because the screen has very small white vertical lines running through the whole screen. The screen is also dull and not bright like usual.
I replaced the video card because the problem would appear and disappear. Once I would start to type, move the laptop, or move the display, the display would first become unreadable with the white vertical lines, but then after more use the problem would get even worse. The screen would get so bad that I could not even see any of the icons and the computer would crash.
My reason for replacing the video card so stemmed from connecting an external monitor. The display on the external monitor also would not work, but the display was vivid unlike mine.
After replacing the video card, I can move my laptop, I can type, and I can move the display with out causing the laptop to crash or the problem to get worse.
The only problem is that the vertical lines are still present and the screen does have a dull/not vivid appearance.
I figure that video card and inverter went bad at that same time, but I am not sure. I would love some ideas what to do next.
Also what caused the display to go bad is the computer started to work very slow. Then all on a sudden it crashed and when started up again … the display was not working correctly.
After taking out the video card, I noticed that the heating transfer compound was dry and brittle, so I assumed that the video card went bad.
I bought the new video card off idea, sot it might have problems as well, but I doubt it.
Any suggestions? Thank you reading this post.
