Also can you inform me of where I can purchase cheap memory for these laptops?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 it is about 2.5 years old. Recently, I have had difficulty getting the computer to turn. I push the power button and the LEDs light up also the blue light on the far right LED flickers. Then, nothing. THe power light stays on for a few seconds and then goes off. The LEDs next to the power button also flash. Sometimes, after I have tried turning the power on and off a few times, the machiine will turn on, go through POST start windows and everything is fine. However, on a couple of times immediately after POST, I got an error message that said something like “read/write error” and on the next line “decreased amount of available memory”
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I have a problem with a C610 - On start up, the fan starts as normally, the caps led is illuminated and after about 5 seconds it simply cuts out. Laptop picks up the power supply and continues the charge the battery even after it cuts out.
Is this a motherboard issue do you think? If so, I have a spare motherboard, but this came from a computer that had a boot password on - would the password transfer to the computer if I changed the motherboard?
Glad there’s a point of call for us rookies!! Any help very much appreciated, thanks in advance, Victoria.

Thank you for this site. I was able to replace the keyboard on my Dell laptop thanks to the manuals. I had searched the Dell site on my own previously, but did not find what I needed until I found your site!!

I Have a Dell Inspiron 3800 and I am having the ac adapter turning off problem, but without the small pop as i plug it in. This laptop is old and so i disected it to see if i could find and burnt out parts or anything at all. Just for the heck of it, i plugged just the motherboard in, the light stayed on. So i plugged another part in, it stayed on. Now i found out that when i plug in a board, with everything else in, the ac adapter shuts off instantly. I had the monitor, harddrive, everything except this board, it is in the middle of the motherboard, directly beneath the keyboard, and when i put it into its slot, the AC adapter trips. What is this board and what does it do? Could this be a solution, replace it, not the entire motherboard? Thanks

Sounds like a screen inverter issue to me. Check to make sure the cables inside the screen aren’t loose, and - failing that - consider replacing the inverter.
Also, how would I go about re-soldering the DC-in jack, as I have narrowed it down to just that. I’m having trouble removing the motherboard to get to the DC-in jack.

The problems with my Inspiron 1150 has changed or increased since the last 2 weeks [ post #81]
Now everytime I turn the AC power on — the screen goes black, it’ll still charge the battery though. It turns on fine with battery, but the screen flickers a LOT and if I increase the brightness to high– screen goes black again.
I tried looking at the screen with bright lights and I can still see a faint outline, so I’m thinking my screen doesn’t actually shut down– it just doesnt like to be on high brightness or on AC power….
Can somebody please help me???

I have an old Dell Inspiron 2650 that has ceased to boot regularily. I know the main battery is dead, and has been for some time, but as I use it plugged in this was not a problem… Now it takes about 10 tries to boot to windows. Most often, the drives spin up, and I don’t get to the Dell/BIOS screen. Sometimes it gets to the splash screen then freezes, and sometimes it gets as far as windows before dying. Because my BIOS data (when I am able to get into it) is consistently dead, I suspect it is a CMOS Battery issue. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any info on where to locate a CMOS battery in my system, so I don’t know if I am barking up the wrong tree. I followed advice found on this site, and re-seated all the components, based on the attitude that the non-functioning laptop couldn’t get more non-functioning if I messed up, but it still does exactly the same thing…
