Raulcheeba,
When you get the same video defect on both internal and external screen, most likely it indicates a problem with the video card. I’m not sure 100% but I think in your laptop the video card is integrated into the motherboard. If the video card is bad you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard. Here are instructions for Dell Latitude D510 notebook.

Hi guys, I bought a used dell latitude d510 a few weeks ago. When I was at the guys house the computer seemed to be working great. 2 days later I tried using it for the first real time.
At first windows would load and after a little while the screen would become very pixelated, large chunks (maybe 5×20 pixels horizontally) would form in the graphics that looks like a bad dvd decoding. eventually they would consume the whole screen. sometimes moving a window or getting the start up menu to pop up clears the chunks temporarily, then the form in the clear space again.
Then after a week or so the chunky pixels problem began to occur immediately after the laptop was turned on, even the Dell logo/bios start up was messed up. After the boot, I could do the window move thing and sometimes it would temporarily clear the chunks back to normal in the section (of the desktop) behind the window. As usual the chunks would form again.
Here is a link to the picture I took with my phone:
In the picture you can see that the bad image is also exactly the same on my TV out.
If this is a bad video card issue could you please share a link to a tutorial on how to remove, clean and replace the video card?
I also installed the latest video drivers as posted on the dell support/download section of their site.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Doug Stone,
If the screen will not stay in the normal position and just falls, probably you have broken hinges. You’ll have to replace both hinges.
I just searched on eBay for “latitude C840 hinges” and found entire hinge/bezel/latch assembly just for $25. I think that’s a really good price. Dell instructions will help you to transfer the display, cable and inverter.

I have a Dell C840. The screen is so loose that it just free-falls. How do I fix this? (tighten?) Thanks.

I am having Dell Inspiron 6400 LAPTOP. Its monitor is flickering when it is running on battery. But it is OK when it is powered with AC. And also this is having a serious hang up problems atleaset 5 times in a hour. Please give your guidelines.

Wuckman,
Make sure you are using a correct AC adapter. I have a Dell Latitude C840 notebook myself, but instead of 19V-4.5A adapter I’m using 19V-3.5A adapter, as a result my CPU always runs slower. I believe instead of 1.8GHz it runs at 1.2GHz. I tested my laptop with a correct adapter and the CPU went back to 1.8GHz, so in my case it happens because I’m using an incorrect adapter.

For the people whose Inspiron 8500 and 8600 won’t charge the battery… you probably need to replace the motherboard. When my 8500 was under on-site warranty, the technician mentioned that some part of the motherboard battery circuitry degraded over time. He didn’t know whether it was the charging or monitoring circuitry, but Dell handled it as a board swap. My second motherboard was acting flaky two or three months after the swap (and the tech swapped it out twice before settling on this one), so it’s very likely that a replacement will croak too – it’s just a matter of time. I’ve seen external battery chargers for $71 to $95 and ‘like new’ (meaning working) motherboards (without processor) for $25 to $200. I think $71-95 is ridiculous for a battery charger given that a charger that plugs directly into the laptop can be found for $35, but taking the machine apart to replace the motherboard is time consuming and is only a temporary solution. One way or the other, you’re screwed…

My Dell 9300 has stopped charging. It functions fine while plugged in, but it will not charge batteries. I have no fear opening it up for I have repaired a few laptops in my day. Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened?
P.S. I just discovered my warranty expired 2 months ago when the problem began, GRR.
