    Peter Westernman,

The only problem is that the vertical lines are still present and the screen does have a dull/not vivid appearance.
I figure that video card and inverter went bad at that same time, but I am not sure.

When the inverter board goes bad, the screen turns really dark because the baclight lamp not getting any power from the inverter but a failed inverter board cannot cause vertical lines on the screen.

    Hi,
I have a dell inspiron 1300 and the speakers have just suddenly stopped working… does anyone know why? I have re-started it and it’s not on mute before you ask.

Update to my problem: I hooked up the computer to an external monitor. The monitor would work on start-up. Before windows would load, the external monitor would read unable to display the current display and would go blank. My laptop would load into windows and I would still have the normal problems. So I decided to install the nvidia drivers for my 32mb Geforce 440 ToGo. This made the problem even force. Different distorted colors would be left where ever I moved the cursor. The display also had funny colors. The laptop would crash after a few seconds.

I figure that without the nvidia drives the display was running at minimal setting, same as if the laptop was in safe mode, after the drivers where installed something was not able to support the extra performance/data.

So now I am even more lost to what the problem is. Any suggestions?

I have read all topics relating to display problems. Here is my problem. The display does not work.

I can see everything on the screen, but the text and icons are unreadable.

In my opinion everything is unreadable because the screen has very small white vertical lines running through the whole screen. The screen is also dull and not bright like usual.

I replaced the video card because the problem would appear and disappear. Once I would start to type, move the laptop, or move the display, the display would first become unreadable with the white vertical lines, but then after more use the problem would get even worse. The screen would get so bad that I could not even see any of the icons and the computer would crash.

My reason for replacing the video card so stemmed from connecting an external monitor. The display on the external monitor also would not work, but the display was vivid unlike mine.

After replacing the video card, I can move my laptop, I can type, and I can move the display with out causing the laptop to crash or the problem to get worse.

The only problem is that the vertical lines are still present and the screen does have a dull/not vivid appearance.

I figure that video card and inverter went bad at that same time, but I am not sure. I would love some ideas what to do next.

Also what caused the display to go bad is the computer started to work very slow. Then all on a sudden it crashed and when started up again … the display was not working correctly.

After taking out the video card, I noticed that the heating transfer compound was dry and brittle, so I assumed that the video card went bad.

I bought the new video card off idea, sot it might have problems as well, but I doubt it.

Any suggestions? Thank you reading this post.

    Hello,
I have a Inspiron 6000 notebook, and the LCD becomes very dark a few seconds after I start it up. It works fine if I connect the s-video to another lcd screen. From reading about similar issues above, I have gathered that my problem is likely the inverter. I saw in post 66 that someone had taken apart their D610. Do you know if I would follow the same steps for my 6000? Also, what is the ‘backlight’? And could that possibly be the issue with my laptop?
    Thanks You, khil22.

    Raulcheeba,

after a week or so the chunky pixels problem began to occur immediately after the laptop was turned on, even the Dell logo/bios start up was messed up…In the picture you can see that the bad image is also exactly the same on my TV out.

When you get the same video defect on both internal and external screen, most likely it indicates a problem with the video card. I’m not sure 100% but I think in your laptop the video card is integrated into the motherboard. If the video card is bad you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard. Here are instructions for Dell Latitude D510 notebook.

Hi guys, I bought a used dell latitude d510 a few weeks ago. When I was at the guys house the computer seemed to be working great. 2 days later I tried using it for the first real time.

At first windows would load and after a little while the screen would become very pixelated, large chunks (maybe 5×20 pixels horizontally) would form in the graphics that looks like a bad dvd decoding. eventually they would consume the whole screen. sometimes moving a window or getting the start up menu to pop up clears the chunks temporarily, then the form in the clear space again.

Then after a week or so the chunky pixels problem began to occur immediately after the laptop was turned on, even the Dell logo/bios start up was messed up. After the boot, I could do the window move thing and sometimes it would temporarily clear the chunks back to normal in the section (of the desktop) behind the window. As usual the chunks would form again.

Here is a link to the picture I took with my phone:

In the picture you can see that the bad image is also exactly the same on my TV out.

If this is a bad video card issue could you please share a link to a tutorial on how to remove, clean and replace the video card?

I also installed the latest video drivers as posted on the dell support/download section of their site.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Doug Stone,
If the screen will not stay in the normal position and just falls, probably you have broken hinges. You’ll have to replace both hinges.
I just searched on eBay for “latitude C840 hinges” and found entire hinge/bezel/latch assembly just for $25. I think that’s a really good price. Dell instructions will help you to transfer the display, cable and inverter.
