Hi! I have a Dell INspiron XPS GEN1 laptop, which I bought over ebay a few days ago. It arrived as brand new. And I can see that it is all orginally sealed. But I cannot turn it on. After pressing the power button, the three lights in the middle went on for a few seconds and went away. The hard drive light flashes once before it goes away. The LCD flickers once as well. I tried it so many times and it gives me the same result.
But if I press and hold either F10 or F11 or “start-menu” key at the lower left before all those three lights go away, those lights will stay. Meanwhile, the fan turns on as well, although it does not turn the computer on. And neither the lights nor the fan stops until I unplug it.
This happens no matter I am working with AC or battery. The lights on the battery were off always. But it should have some power in it.
Anyone can help me? It is a new one, although has gone out of warranty long ago. Thanks so much!

Peter,
I don’t know. To narrow down the problem it is necessary to test the laptop with another screen.

CJ2600, Thank you for the reply. After looking at all of the evidence, I came to the conclusion that a power surge or over heating of the video card caused the display to go bad. With the new video card, the problem is better, but not solved.
To sum up when the video card went bad, so did the monitor, but not the inverter. Does this make sense? Or do you think the problem stems from a bad motherboard? Or even a different problem?
Thank you for all the help.

Georgina,
Test the laptop with headphones. If you can hear sound using headphones but external speakers do not work, you might have faulty speakers.
If both external speakers and headphones do not work, you might have a software related problem. Check all setting again just to make sure the sound is turned on. Try reinstalling the audio driver.

Peter Westernman,
When the inverter board goes bad, the screen turns really dark because the baclight lamp not getting any power from the inverter but a failed inverter board cannot cause vertical lines on the screen.

Update to my problem: I hooked up the computer to an external monitor. The monitor would work on start-up. Before windows would load, the external monitor would read unable to display the current display and would go blank. My laptop would load into windows and I would still have the normal problems. So I decided to install the nvidia drivers for my 32mb Geforce 440 ToGo. This made the problem even force. Different distorted colors would be left where ever I moved the cursor. The display also had funny colors. The laptop would crash after a few seconds.
I figure that without the nvidia drives the display was running at minimal setting, same as if the laptop was in safe mode, after the drivers where installed something was not able to support the extra performance/data.
So now I am even more lost to what the problem is. Any suggestions?

I have read all topics relating to display problems. Here is my problem. The display does not work.
I can see everything on the screen, but the text and icons are unreadable.
In my opinion everything is unreadable because the screen has very small white vertical lines running through the whole screen. The screen is also dull and not bright like usual.
I replaced the video card because the problem would appear and disappear. Once I would start to type, move the laptop, or move the display, the display would first become unreadable with the white vertical lines, but then after more use the problem would get even worse. The screen would get so bad that I could not even see any of the icons and the computer would crash.
My reason for replacing the video card so stemmed from connecting an external monitor. The display on the external monitor also would not work, but the display was vivid unlike mine.
After replacing the video card, I can move my laptop, I can type, and I can move the display with out causing the laptop to crash or the problem to get worse.
The only problem is that the vertical lines are still present and the screen does have a dull/not vivid appearance.
I figure that video card and inverter went bad at that same time, but I am not sure. I would love some ideas what to do next.
Also what caused the display to go bad is the computer started to work very slow. Then all on a sudden it crashed and when started up again … the display was not working correctly.
After taking out the video card, I noticed that the heating transfer compound was dry and brittle, so I assumed that the video card went bad.
I bought the new video card off idea, sot it might have problems as well, but I doubt it.
Any suggestions? Thank you reading this post.

Hello,
I have a Inspiron 6000 notebook, and the LCD becomes very dark a few seconds after I start it up. It works fine if I connect the s-video to another lcd screen. From reading about similar issues above, I have gathered that my problem is likely the inverter. I saw in post 66 that someone had taken apart their D610. Do you know if I would follow the same steps for my 6000? Also, what is the ‘backlight’? And could that possibly be the issue with my laptop?
Thanks You, khil22.
