I have a Dell latitiude c600.
IT has trouble turning on, the system lights will come on and then after about 5 sec, everything shuts off. I have tested 2 motherboards in this system.
The battery is charging as if I plug in the AC adapter, the battery light is lit up. But either way, it does the same thing with the AC adapter in.
I DON’T see the cpu fan turning on so im thinking this may be the issue. Does anyone know if the Dell latitudes will shut off automatically when not detecting the fan?

Josh,
Did you test RAM? It is possible that your laptop shuts down because of a faulty RAM module.
Not sure about that. I think the laptop will shut down when CPU overheats but 5 seconds is not enough to warm up the CPU to the critical temperature. Test your laptop with a known good memory stick.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600. I have had it for 4 years and had a few problems..one, the fan stopped working and they walked me through how to make it work again. Then it wouldn’t recognize my dvd/cd drive and they walked me through that too. My warranty just expired in February of this year and two weeks ago my screen went black. All the lights work windows sounds, etc..fine, no display. Called Dell and they said it was my video card. I ordered one, and had to pay for it, of course, since it is out of warranty….they walked me through installing it, and when I powered up, it worked….for 2 days…today, the screen is black again, and after 3 hours on the phone with a man that sounds like he is from India he tells me it is not my video card, but the motherboard. Can someone tell me if it is…and if it could be related to that fan not running so that I could get Dell to pick up the cost of replacing it???
