Hi I have a question.Im not a real familar with Dells but I am with most other laptops. My girlfriend has an older dell inspiron 4100 that has an issue where it will start to power up then shuts off.Sometimes it will run for long times and not do this other times it wont stay on running unless it sits for a few eeks. I know compaq had a similar issue caused by heatsink mounting studs breaking from the motherboard but as Im not so familiar with dells was curious if anyone had any starting ideas. I am going to disassemble the unit and inspect all components from loose wires or connections, clean the system out, inspect and clean the heat sink and mounts, and replace the cpu with a bigger one within range.I notice that this 4100 doesnt have a pci card in the bottom byt the modem was this an option on these or is this just missing from the factory? Thanks for any ideas or input.

Yuri,
You can access the screen connection if you follow instructions in this maintenance manual.

Msfoxie Williamson,
Download these drivers from the Dell website on your PC, then transfer drivers to the USB flash drive and install them on your laptop.

PLEASE HELP ME. I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 with no documentation-user manual, etc. I can’t go online with AOL 9 even though I have it on my PC. AND, the computer says its operating system is Windows XP Professional when you turn it on BUT, on the bottom of the refurbished computer, it says Windows XP Home edition.
It has no sound, none of the following works:Multimedia audio controller, PCI modem, Video controllers, Network controller, etc. it’s because they have no drivers.
I need the manual and the operating disk(s) to access the system. Please help me!
I filled out the ownership transfer form with the service tag and express service code and it kept saying my name was wrong each time i tried to submit it SO PLEASE, WHAT DO I DO??
Please send me the Operation disk(s) and user manuals. Thank you.

Chak,
DDR2 memory is not backward compatible with DDR memory. DDR2 module will not fit into the slot designed for DDR module. It looks the same but the notch is located in a different spot.
You purchased DDR2 but you need DDR.

I tried to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 710m memory from 1 GB (2 X 512) to 2 GB (2 X 1GB). I bought a Crucial 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-5300 667MHz 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 Laptop Memory from Buy.com. Surprisingly the new memory doesnt fit into the socket. The nick present in between the pins (200 pins) is 1 mm close to one end (I compared with the one in my note book which has PC2700 DDR SDRAM SODIMM memory). Do you think this is a manufacturer damage or problem, or this new crucial memory doesnt support my notebook.

Krot,
Test the hard drive, you can use Hitachi’s DFT. If the hard drive passes test, try reinstalling Windows from scratch.
Also, test memory with Memtest86+.
I linked to both utilities in Resources on the right side.
