Reggie,
I think this problem is related to the laptop backlight lamp (CCFL), not the inverter board. When you start getting a red tint, most likely the backlight lamp is going bad, witch means replacing the screen.
You can try replacing the backlight lamp, but it’s not easy.

Stacy,
Could be bad hard drive. Enter the BIOS setup screen and check if have any utilities for testing the hard drive. Test the hard drive. Can you see the hard drive in the BIOS at all?
Alternatively, you can download and use Hitachi’s drive fitness test for testing the hard drive (link on the right side of the website).

I have a Dell Inspiron B130. I’ve read most the comments and I think the problem is the inverter but want to make sure.
Out of the blue the screen started getting a red tint. If I closed the screen and reopend it would go away but quickly come back. Finally the screen went blank but I could see windows in the back ground if I held the laptop in the right light. It works perfectly when connected to an external monitor.
Do I need to replace the inverter or the entire screen? and
Is this a common problem in the Inspiron series?
Thanks

Don Hensel,
I would test the hard drive. It’s possible that the hard drive is going bad and because of that your laptop is very slow. Most likely that’s your problem. You can use Hitachi’s driver fitness test, you will find a link in Resources on the right side.
