Does any one have a MB out of an Inspiron XPS (Gen 1) that can look at a transistor and tell me the numbers on it? It is marked as PQ4 in white lettering and is located on the RAM (bottom side of the board, about 1 inch in from the back of the large USB port.

Lila,
What if you remove the hard drive and try entering the BIOS setup after that? Can you enter the setup menu with the hard drive removed?

Ken,
I think your problem can be related to the power jack – the socket in witch you plug the power adapter. If the power jack is broken, the motherboard will not get power from the adapter and will not charge the battery. If that’s the case, you’ll have to disassemble the laptop and take a closer look at the power jack. If the jack is broken or not making good connection with the motherboard, you’ll have to resolder or replace the jack.

I have a Dell Latitude D510 which can not be directly powered by its adapter neither can its battery be charged. The only way to currently used to have this laptop powered is to charge the battery through another laptop

Gwen,
Check out this article about cleaning Dell Inspiron 1100, 5100 and 5150 series laptops. It explains how you can take it apart for the keyboard replacement and for the cooling fan cleaning.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop that’s about 5 years old. Recently, it has been having two problems: it shuts down at random times when I’m on the internet, and it registers that the ‘alt’ key is permanently depressed when I’m using MS Office or the internet. Whenever I try to type something, it will display whatever letter I’ve pressed as the alt function. When I type “r,” I get the “Run” box. For “u,” Windows Utility. For “l,” I get logged out of my user account.
With the internet, I don’t know if it’s because the sites have high graphics content or what. I think that the laptop gets overheated, even when I don’t use my computer for a few days.
I talked with a tech support guy from Dell Chat, and he indicated that I need to clean the computer out first, and then think about replacing the keyboard, the motherboard, and/or adding more memory.
I know very little about the technical aspects of computers, so any help you can give would be most appreciated. Thanks!
