8100 user,
First of all, try reconnecting the memory module. If you have only one RAM module, try moving it to the empty slot. If you have two RAM modules, try removing them one by one. Test the laptop with each RAM module installed into different slots. It’s possible this just a memory problem.
Try minimizing the laptop as much as you can. Remove battery, hard drive, DVD drive, wireless card, etc… maybe even disconnect the LCD screen video cable from the motherboard and connect and external monitor instead. Turn on the laptop. If the laptop still fails the same way and the hard drive “activity” light still goes on, solid, for a few seconds then turns off, most likely you have a problem with the motherboard.

Hi there, thank you for your recommendations in this page……I have a laptop is a dell inspiron 8600, when I turn it on the screen at the beginning seems to work ok but after, it goes off, then comeback again and when you are about to login the screen goes off again and don’t comeback. The lights on the right side (the green ones close to the screen) starts flashing very slow like going on and off.
Thank you so much in advance for your response and for all your help, I really appreciate it. God bless you

Mike,
I had the same problem that you had, I think that’s a problem with the ATI video card that came with the laptop, I have an inspiron 8200 and I had to change the video card, don’t get the ATI one, get the nvidia geforce 440 go, and if this video card doesn’t work with the LCD, pulg to an external monitor and perform a firmware update, restart it, and that’s it, you’ll have your computer back. I don’t know if the nvidia is compatiblo with your computer model, you have to check that

I have a problem with my mom’s Inspiron 8100 - when I try to turn it on it just sits at the Blue Dell spash screen indefinitely. F2, F12, Del, don’t seem to do anything to let me into the BIOS setup.
This seems to persist whether or not the hard drive is in place.
The hard drive “activity” light goes on, solid, for a few seconds then turns off, the computer sitting there indefinitely. I don’t hear any beeps to indicate a POST.
I had it sitting off to the side for some time now, last time I tried to boot it up the blue splash screen took up the entire monitor space as normal, now for some reason, it’s shrunk, taking up only a smaller square worth of the screen’s space.
Thanks for any advice to point me in the right direction, I’m not sure what it could be!

HINKY,
That sounds like a problem with the motherboard. Sorry, I cannot advice you how to fix it, I don’t repair motherboards on the component level. I guess you’ll have to replace it or find a repair shop offering component level repairs.

zidane10,
It’s necessary to disassemble the laptop and check all connections inside. Reseat all cables and internal parts.
First, try reconnecting parts you can access without disassembling the laptop. Reconnect memory, hard drive, DVD drive, etc…

My dell inspiron 600m laptop is not turning on after i accidently dropped it on the floor. Everytime I hit the power button, the fans and lights go on, but then it shuts off within about three seconds.and nothing appear on the screen..just blank..
What’s going on? I wouldn’t mind losing all the data on it but I’d rather not. Is there anything I can do, or am I going to have to take it into a computer repair shop?
