tej,
Try this. Press F12 as soon as Dell logo appears on the screen. Select CD/DVD drive from the boot device menu and press enter. Can you boot from the OS CD now?

i have a dell inspiron b130, and for the third time my cd/dvd drive has stopped working, i was wondering if i can replace it with any brand as long as the dimensions match or does it have to be dell brand? i don’t really want to go through dell again seeing as this is the third maybe even the fourth time this has happened…

The charging/AC power light on my Dell XPS m1710 has gone out. When I plug the power unit into the laptop, I don’t see the battery charging light on. When I power up the laptop, I still don’t see the light. However, in windows, my battery is noted as being charged and the computer being powered by AC unit.
So simply put: What is wrong with my AC light on the laptop? I need this fixed as I plan on selling the laptop.
Cheers.

Russell Rhodes,
Are you asking about the backlight lamp (CCFL) witch is located inside the LCD screen? Take a look at this guide:
How to replace laptop backlight lamp (CCFL).

I took my Dell Inspiron 9100 apart because of overheating, cleaned all three fans, reassembled it…and pffft. Three lights would come on (num lock, cap lock, etc.) for five seconds, but the laptop was very quiet, and then it would shut itself off. I couldn’t figure out what had happened, so I asked my husband for help, and he realized that when I removed the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly, that the CPU’s thermal grease had become so hard that the CPU was actually yanked out of the socket by the cooling assembly. So when I put the assembly back in, the CPU wasn’t locked in place, and the lock mechanism couldn’t be reached (or seen) because the assembly was blocking it. My husband carefully pried the CPU off the assembly, cleaned the old grease, put the CPU back on the motherboard and locked it, put grease on the CPU, and put the assembly back in. We reassembled the rest of the laptop, and presto, it works fine again!

My Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop would not boot after I cleaned its fans. It would come on for about 5 seconds, just the three num lock/caps lock/etc lights, very quiet, then shut off. I tried re-reseating everything but it wouldn’t work, and lots of Google searches seemed to indicate a motherboard problem. My husband looked at the laptop and realized that that when I removed the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly, that the CPU’s thermal grease had become so hard that the CPU was actually yanked out of the socket by the cooling assembly. I haven’t seen this solution anywhere in my Googling, so I hope it helps someone else.
