drew,
Search for “Inspiron e1705 laptop” on eBay and you’ll get the idea.

AL,
Unfortunately, your description sounds like a problem with the motherboard. Apparently there is a bad solder joint somewhere on the board and when you apply pressure on the bottom, you “fix” it temporarily. I think you’ll have to replace the motherboard.

James Stahlaman,
Do you know if your laptop has a discrete video card? In most laptops the video card is integrated into the motherboard and cannot be removed and replaced separately.
If you have a discrete video card, you should be able to follow instructions in the Dell service manual.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. Been working fine for years then all of a sudden im having an issue starting. Now when i hit the start button, the power indicator, caps lock and # lock all turn green and the fan comes on but this only lasts for 2-3 seconds and then the computer turns off. The hard drive indicator light does not turn green. I have found that when i put upward pressure on the bottom of the laptop and hold that pressure, i can get the hard drive indicator to turn green and consiquently it loads. Once i release pressure the hard drive light is no longer green and that puts the brakes on the loading process.
Troubleshooting already attempted:
-Reseated memory sticks and alternated them into diff slots
-Disipated static by pulling out AC and battery and held down start button for 30 sec.
-Took apart laptop down to motherboard and 1)cleaned fan and heatsink 2)checked DC adapter for bad soder areas 3)checked for loose connections/bad soder areas on MOBO
-Tried starting without various components installed(battery, optic drive, etc)
-Tried numerous outlets
-Switched out AC adapters
I haven’t bought new memory sticks or hard drive yet because i am able to start it with applying the pressure to the bottom of laptop. Although, each time i do that it gets harder and harder to start it that way. I absolutely refuse to buy a new MOBO so i’m hoping that it’s a less expensive fix.
Any comments/ideas/opinions on what to do now? Should i re-do a step? Did i miss anything? I am only a grasshopper…is there a teacher out there who can help?..LOL

After doing more research on this ground, it looks like it’s a ground that is used for reducing/eliminating Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). Many PCB’s have what is called a “Guard Ring”, this is a ground-connected track that is around the outer edge of a PCB and does not carry a return current for the circuit but rather is used to serve as a return for EMI that is radiating out of the PCB.
Some of you may recall seeing EMI on your analog TV screen when a motor is running, like a vacuum cleaner. Well, there can be EMI on digital screens as well, but manufacturers usually do a good job of keeping this interference out.
