Dan Kelley,
Test RAM. Download Memtest86+ utility, create a bootable floppy or CD disk and boot the laptop from this media. The test will start automatically. I think you might have a bad memory stick. If you have two memory stick installed into your notebook, remove them one by one. Try starting the laptop with only one RAM module installed, try both memory slots.
If the memory passes, test the hard drive. You can use Hitachi’s drive fitness test. Run an advanced test.
You’ll find links to both utilities in the “Links” on the right pane.

Torrance,
Probably it’s just a software problem. Try booting the laptop into safe mode. Can you boot to the desktop in safe mode?

Sunshinedelight,
Last week I posted instructions for taking apart screen on Dell Latitude D610. I don’t think it would be much different from Inspiron 510m and disassembly steps should be almost the same.

I boot up my Dell Inspiron 2500 and I get the “Windows XP” screen, then it goes blue, then black. Could it be the LCD, or is it a problem with the software (Windows XP)? What need to be fixed and how is it done?

Gordon,
Most likely you have a failed screen inverter. Here are instructions for replacing the inverter board. The guide is made for an IBM notebook but it will not be much different for a Dell notebook.
