How to take apart and repair Toshiba laptops yourself
The following laptop step-by-step disassembly manuals I have created myself. You can use them if you have a Toshiba laptop and want to repair or upgrade it yourself. You shouldn’t disassemble your laptop if you have no experience with computers because you can easily damage it. Also, you shouldn’t open it if the laptop is still under warranty. I’m still developing new laptop teardown guides and my goal is to add new guides every week. If you do not see a manual for your model, most likely I will add it later. Stay tuned.

Hello. I’m having a problem with a Toshiba Tecra A4 with the “volume wheel” on the front of the laptop, it seems the wheel is broken or loose, so every sound in my laptop right now is missing. Even when the volume in the system is at 100%. My guess is that the “volume wheel” on the front of the laptop controls physicly the volume, so it haves to be doing some how of connection. My question is, have you tried to deassembly that part from anther toshiba??, do i have to deassembly the whole laptop to get to that part, or is another easier method to fix it?? Kind Regards… Mario… by the way, nice tutorials you have!!

Michael,
First of all, press Fn+F5. This key combination switches video output between internal and external screens. It’s possible that the laptop stuck in the external mode and there is no video signal going to the laptop LCD.
Second, try tapping on the lid close switch, if you have any. Does the LCD screen change color when you’re tapping on the switch? Maybe the backlight turns on for a moment? If the backlight flashes when you’re tapping on the lid close switch and then turns off again, probably you have bad inverter.
Take a closer look at the screen when the laptop is turned on. Can you see a very faint image on the screen? If you can, most likely you’ll have to replace the inverter board.

I have a 2455-S305 and recently the screen started to flicker and then went black. Do you think it is the inverter, backlight or the LCD? I hooked up and external moniter and all works well.
If it is inverter or backlight do you have instructions for replacing?
Thanks

Keith,
Here’s another thread dedicated to Satellite A60 and A65 series problems.
To find out what is wrong with your laptop you’ll have to go through some troubleshooting steps. You’ll have to take it apart.
Start taking it apart by removing components that you can easily access from the bottom. Remove battery, hard drive, wireless card, DVD drive, keyboard. Test the laptop after each removed component. You can even unplug the LCD screen from the motherboard and test the laptop with an external screen. In short, minimize the laptop as much as you can. In order to successfully start the laptop with video, all you need is motherboard, processor and memory (in your case you onboard memory), so you need only motherboard and CPU.
If the laptop still beeps even after you removed all above mentioned components, most likely there is something wrong with the motherboard. You’ll have to replace the motherboard.

Justen,
That’s strange but I cannot find the DC jack for a Portege m200 laptop either. I searched through all my suppliers and they do not have it.

Hi, in reply to Peter:
I’m a PC & laptop repair technician by trade. From experience on every laptop I have seen to date, the hinges are riveted or spot welded onto the internal metal frame. There’s unfortunately really no way to replace them without getting a new frame, which is not an easy part to find, nor is it very cheap. Sorry about the bad news, I have to tell people this all the time in the course of business.
In reply to Matthew:
Your CPU heatsink should always make good contact with the surface of your CPU, however they are usually not mounted with screws but rather with a spring or clip mechanism. Too much mechanical pressure, such as from directly screwing down a heatsink too tightly, runs the risk of cracking the die, which means dead CPU. I would look around and see if you can find a picture or a diagram of what it’s supposed to look like and compare to what you are seeing inside your laptop. But yes, definitely find a way to mount that thing back on properly before you use it again.
Check to make sure it’s not just the fins sliding back and forth on the heatpipe before you do anything drastic.
Now, for the reason I came here, I’m looking for the part number of the DC jack on a Toshiba Portege m200, or any link or info on where to get one. I can’t seem to find it listed on any of the major DC jack sites. It probably uses some standard jack that I just can’t find listed of course.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M30 that has a loose CPU heatsink. I can insert a tiny flatblade screwdriver into the copper heatsink fins, and move it side to side easily. Tilting the laptop also makes this move - I assume this should NOT be the case and that the CPU screws need tightening? I did note the M35 manual and can fix if this shouldnt be loose.

I have an old satelite P20 (seems to be similar to a P25) and I have had it for about 5 years now. Unfortunately the left hinge seems to have broken today ( I think so at least - as I open the screen I can see a piece of metal push out the Mask)…
So I read over the instructions for the P25 and it seems like something I could tackle, however.. although the guide is great for giving details on how to take the laptop apart, There seems to be no mention of how to replace or remove the hinges. In fact the hinges are not mentioned in the list of parts that can be replaced at the top of the guide… Is it just a trivial thing to replace the hinges once you have taken the whole thing apart ?
