How to remove BIOS password from Toshiba

posted in: Laptop hacks, Toshiba Problems | 203

Toshiba Laptop BIOS Removal ToolYou can use this plug to remove or clear the BIOS password from older Toshiba laptops. I tested the plug and it successfully cleared the BIOS password from Toshiba Satellite 1415, Satellite 1800 and Satellite Pro 6100. Using the plug you should be able to remove a BIOS password from most Pentium III Toshiba laptops and from some Pentium IV laptops. To make a password removal tool you need a DB25 plug from a parallel printer cable (cable with a plug that you can take apart), a solder gun and 30-40 minutes of your time.

Toshiba Laptop BIOS Clear Tool

Cut a DB25 connector off an old parallel printer cable and remove screws to disassemble the plug. The wires should be long enough to strip the ends and solder them.

All pins on the connector are marked from 1 to 25 and you should connect and solder together the wires from the following pins:

1+5+10 2+11 3+17 4+12 6+16 7+13 8+14 9+15

On some connectors pins 18 through 25 are already connected. If they are not connected, connect them. Do not connect a wire from pins 18-25 and a ground wire to anything, just insulate it with electrical tape and leave alone.

Toshiba Laptop BIOS Erase Tool

Carefully fold the wires, put wires inside the DB25 connector and assemble the connector.

Toshiba Laptop BIOS Removal Tool

How to use the Toshiba BIOS password removal tool: connect the plug to the parallel port on your Toshiba laptop and turn on the laptop. You should bypass the BIOS password and the laptop will boot directly to the operating system.

You can find and purchase the BIOS removal plug on eBay. Before you buy, make sure it works with your Toshiba laptop.

UPDATE for all Toshiba owners:

Some newer Toshiba laptops can start asking for the BIOS password even if the password has never been set. This affects the following models: Satellite A100, A105, A130, A135, A200, A205, L35, M200, M205, P100, P105, P200, P205 and probably some other models.

Before you can use the laptop, the BIOS password has to be cleared.

  5. You are the best. I have been trying to get into this laptop for two weeks after a friends kids “played” with it. I built your tool in about twenty minutes and was back into the laptop in two minutes.

  6. Derick

I tried this on a toshiba 1415 with a celeron processor and it didn’t work. does this not work with celeron?

  7. cj2600

This plug should work on Toshiba Satellite 1415. Check if you connected all above mentioned pins correctly.

  8. Will this work on inspiron2650 as well?

  9. cj2600

    Hi gmc,
This plug will work only on some Toshiba laptops.

  10. Red_Wolf_2

There is a modification to this plug that can be used to do low level diagnostics of toshiba laptops. Essentially it displays the POST codes using eight LEDs on a board. When I eventually get time, ill post the schematics and guides on how to read the codes 🙂

  11. I love this move Mr. Laptop guy. It’s so awesome. I’m yet to try it but I feel it’ll surely work. My lil sis played with my Toshiba and somehow locked it. I’ll give you feedback ASAP. Thanks.

  14. I tried with this plug, but not works. I tried on a satellite a15 sp127
..but nothing.. 🙁 then I try joining the wires from pins 18 and 25 ,
so , the new order was:

    1-5-10, 2-11, 3-17, 4-12, 6-16, 7-13, 8-14, 9-15, 18-25

and.. voila! It works . Hope this help someone.

  15. cj2600

    Hey Steel,
Thank you for your comment. When I built the BIOS removal plug, I used an old printer cable and just cut off the connector. And pins 18-25 were already connected on my connector. I believe pins 18-25 would be connected if you use an old printer cable. I guess you just bought a new connector and that’s why you had some problems.
Thanks again for you comment, I guess it would be useful for many users.

  16. hehe not exactly, I dont know that 18 and 25 were already connected in older cables …I find one in my junk and It doesn’t looks very new xD .
Btw, for the ppl , just check your cable and the order above and it will work in most cases.

I couldn’t find a connector and was desparate so I just cut a series of wires and inserted them in the correct holes of the female connector on the laptop and worked good too. Thanks a million for the info.

  19. Chris W.

Worked like a charm! I used it on a Toshiba Tecra 9100. I did connect 18 & 25 as was suggested in one of the later posts.

    Thanks!!!

  27. i am so amazed, grateful & cant wait to pass info on this site on to others!!!!!!!! My toshiba Satellite A45- S151 wouldn’t get pass the bios system password screen. I didnt have the passcode because a friend of mines from college needed to use my laptop for a “very important” class project. Well, I lended it to her because i wanted to be nice and be there for a friend… Well, when she brought it back to me 1 day after that, I couldnt get pass the passcode black and white screen…. 🙁

Everywhere else i went wanted to charge over $300 which I didnt have… Oh well, at the public library, I came to this site and got the help i needed…. I just followed the instructions listed and WWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW!!!!!
    IT REALLY WORKS!!!!!!!!!!

IT WORKED ON MODEL : TOSHIBA SATELLITE A45- S151 / PENTIUM 4 LAPTOP

  28. Here’s an update. Today I got my second Toshiba Satellite M105 notebook with the same BIOS password related problem. The customer complained that even though he didn’t set any password for BIOS, the laptop started asking for the BIOS password on startup. The previous customer also said that he didn’t setup any password, but I didn’t pay attention to it and just erased the password. But when I got the second unit with a very similar problem, I decided to find out what is wrong. I noticed that the laptop has the BIOS version 1.20. I went to Toshiba website and found that the latest version is 2.20 and there are tons of changes and updates since v1.20. BUT one particular updated got my attention more then other updates. Here’s a quote from the BIOS update list: “Added a workaround for a BIOS password anomaly”. I don’t really know what it means but I think it’s somehow related to the problem reported by the customers.
So guys, if you have Toshiba Satellite M105 laptop check for the BIOS version. It might happen that the laptop might ask you for the password even though you didn’t set it up.

  29. Infotech2000

It’s work for Toshiba satellite 230CX

  30. Yes it’ work for A10, with Pins 18 through 25 connected (18+19+….+24+25).
    thank you

  33. Hello everyone

I just bought an old Toshiba 220 CS, the problem I have is every time I turn the laptop on I am unable to get passed the password I need to get onto the laptop, wheni switch the laptop on it says Toshiba Videos Bios V2.70 enter password.

On reading the information on how to remove BIOS passwords from Toshiba laptops etc. do you know how I could bypass the password on the Toshiba 220 CS, I have just stripped an old printer cable which fits in to the back of the laptop, the plug is sealed so I have taken an inch of the insulation of the 25 various wires,do you know the exact format the wires have to connect to each other in order to use the plug to bypass the Toshiba 220 CS

I would be grateful for any information you could give me etc.

    Regards

    Dave

  34. cj2600

    Dave,
Make sure your plug is assembled correctly and all wires are connected properly. I believe that this plug should work for a Toshiba Satellite 220 laptop.
Check the plug, plug it into the port, restart the laptop and wait until it boots into Windows.

  35. David Jameson

This fix worked like a charm on my Sat Pro 6100. I owe you. Thanks a MILLION, dj

  36. I used the fix from #16, #19 and #15 for my Toshiba Satellite 2060CDS. I didn’t have a plug either so I wired it manually. I am sooo glad to be back in. Thank you cj2600

    Nurain,

I have Toshiba satellite A 130/ 135 Series with the same type of problem
Whenever I start the laptop, there is a blank screen in the background with a blue box in the centre saying enter password…

This is a known problem with some newer Toshiba laptops, including Satellite A130/A135 series. This is related to a glitch in the BIOS. You can send your laptop to Toshiba or take it to the local authorized repair center. They will clear the BIOS password on this model at no charge even if your laptop is out of warranty.

  51. shadowkenshin

This site is very informative. Was able to remove the password of my laptop by just following the instruction. If you don’t have a DB25 you can actually you use copper wires which is enough to fit the hole then follow the sequence of short circuiting the wires.

Thank you so much for this website. Hope it can help others too.

hi Dongle works on a lot of models – but whats about the Models which have no LPT Port ???? I heard about a USB Stick – do anyone know something About ???

This parallel plug will not work on newer Toshiba laptops. You can take your laptop to the authorized repair service center and they should remove the password at no charge.

  59. samer,

How to remove BIOS password from Toshiba laptops but I don’t have parallel port on my laptop toshiba a8-10f

Only an authorized Toshiba technician can remove the BIOS password from a Tecra A8 laptop. The parallel plug will not work, there are no jumpers to short. The technician will have to call to Toshiba and get a special code to unlock your laptop. There is no other way besides taking it to the repair center or replacing the motherboard.

This work perfect for a tecra 9100. Cut a DB25 connector off an new parallel printer cable and remove plastic cover and metal shield to get to the wires . The wires should be long enough to strip the ends and solder them connecting 18-25 worked fine. Booted up the compute and booted into the windows XP OS.

    Reboot worked fine.

You cannot remove the BIOS password from a Tecra M4 laptop yourself. Nothing will work. The only way to clear the BIOS password is taking the laptop to the authorized repair center.
In order to clear the BIOS password, an authorized technician will have to call to Toshiba and get a special code which unlocks the BIOS. That’s the only way to clear the password besides replacing the whole motherboard.

Do this work on a toshiba m400 protege?

  98. cj2600

    tonybanks,

Do this work on a toshiba m400 protege?

    Nope, it will not work.
The only way to remove the BIOS password from a Portege M400 laptop is using the response code.
Basically, a certified Toshiba tech will have to get a special code from your laptop, send it to Toshiba and get the key.
Otherwise you’ll have to replace the motherboard.

  99. is this work in fujitsu loptop pls, let me know,,,

  105. This loop does not work on Toshiba Tecra M2 (made in 2003)
So i suggest for you all to try something ealse 🙁

  106. cj2600

    Nass,

This loop does not work on Toshiba Tecra M2 (made in 2003)
So i suggest for you all to try something ealse

In Tecra M2 Toshiba uses challenge code method. Basically, you have to hit a special key combination on the keyboard, get a challenge code, call Toshiba and ask for the response code. But to do that you have to be a certified Toshiba technician.

I have the Toshiba A215-7437 I set the password when I first bought the computer and never changed it, all of a sudden It says invalid password. I am trying to find the instructions for this model to remove the battery and see that will work. My problem is that I can’t seem to find this model.

    A. By Using the Motherboard Jumper:

In most motherboards CMOS battery is soldered, which makes it difficult to remove the battery. In this case we use another method.

Almost all motherboards contain a jumper that can clear all CMOS settings along with the BIOS password. The location of this jumper varies depending upon the motherboard brand. You should read your motherboard manual to check its location. If you don’t have the manual then look for the jumpers near the CMOS battery. Most of the manufacturer label the jumper as CLR, CLEAR, CLEAR CMOS, etc.

When you find the jumper, look carefully. There will be 3 pins and the jumper will be joining the center pin to either left or right pin. What you need to do, is remove the jumper and join the center pin to the opposite pin. e.g. if the jumper joins center pin to left pin, then remove it and join center pin to right pin. Now wait for a few seconds and then again remove the jumper and join the center pin to left pin.

Make sure to turn the PC off before opening the cabinet and resetting the jumper.

    B. By Using Software:

I have found that BIOS/CMOS Password Recovery Tool is the most effective.:
BIOS/CMOS Password Recovery Tool is a program that works instantly to remove any lost or forgotten BIOS/CMOS password. Simply boot your PC to DOS and execute the program, and get access to forgotten BIOS/CMOS passwords in just seconds

Will not work on Toshiba laptops. You have to bypass the BIOS password before you can do anything with the laptop. You cannot boot from a floppy or CD unless the BIOS password is entered.

p/s give me the solution about Bios Password reset mechanism for Toshiba Satellite A200

Did you buy this laptop in the United States? Are you the registered owner?
If yes, call Toshiba and they will clear the BIOS password at no charge. Just mention that the laptop set the BIOS password on its own.

If you forgot the hard drive password, you’ll have to replace the hard drive.
    The password cannot be removed.

  149. james maina,

how can i remove bios password on my Toshiba tecra M3.

    please help

You cannot remove the BIOS password from a Tecra laptop without calling Toshiba tech support.
They have to provide a special code to unlock the BIOS password. And most likely they will not even talk to you unless you are a certified Toshiba technician.

  150. I’m looking for a fix. My toshiba A200 is locked out right at startup. I by-passed BOIS by taking out the battery. But now the HDD is locked out. Is there a way to by-pass this too somehow.

    Thanks

  151. I was wondering if anyone knows where exactly I can and find the by-pass on the mother bord, including what number”s” im looking for. I have a Toshiba A200. Im getting conflicting results. Ive trysd going in from both sides, “under memory cards” and under the “wireless card” no numbers mach to what thay say to look for.

Are you asking about hard drive password? Unfortunately, you cannot remove this one. If the hard drive password set and you don’t known it, you’ll have to replace the hard drive.

I think in a Toshiba Satellite A200 you have to look in the memory compartment.
There are two pads marked B500 (also has XXX mark).
These pads located almost under the DVD drive mounting screw. You’ll have to remove black film to find them.
After you found these pads, short them with a screwdriver and while shorting the pads, turn on the laptop. Wait until the laptop bypasses the BIOS prompt and starts loading Windows or goes into the BIOS setup menu. After that you can stop shorting the pads.
Sometimes you have to try a few times until the BIOS password removed.
This will not remove the hard drive password.

  154. I had a Toshiba sattelite A10 mother board and it does not have any printer port !how am i suppose to connect DB 25 connector or is there any other idea to remove password from the bios.

  155. sunil,

I had a Toshiba sattelite A10 mother board and it does not have any printer port !how am i suppose to connect DB 25 connector or is there any other idea to remove password from the bios.

This DB25 plug doesn’t work for all Toshiba laptops. It works only for older laptops with parallel port available.
If your laptop has no DB25 port, the BIOS password can be cleared though jumpers on the motherboard (not sure where located) OR it’s necessary to call Toshiba tech support for the BIOS unlock code (could be done only by authorized tech).

  156. Hi there. I tried it on my Tecra 8100 and it worked perfectly. thanks

    password bios

  167. Thanks for the information,
Unlocked a toshiba 6100 with it for a friend,
it works like a train boot with the made connector on,
you can’t get in to the bios but the next time you restart
without the connector you wil be directed to the bios.

    namaste.

  168. The Prof

Wow!!! Built the interface from a molded printer cord. Took an hour to cut the DB25 away from the cord and get access to the pins. Soldered all those wires on and like magic, I booted this Tecra 9100 that a friend brought to me with that horrible password: prompt. You saved my reputation as a computer guru. Thanks so much for posting this.

FYI: Toshiba will no longer fix this problem. The offer ran out December 31, 2010.

  169. Parallel port dongle did the trick, thank you!

  170. Paul

It works fine on Toshiba Tecra 8000.
    Thanks for this!

    pinas Tosh,

    I have a Toshiba dynabook 2000 DS80P…

If you don’t know the password, you’ll have to replace the hard drive.
You cannot clear the hard drive password.

  173. It worked on Toshiba Tecra 8200.

  174. computer hardware servicing

    Thanks mate it works!!!

How I wonder if you can give us some thoughts regarding bios passwords for newer laptops with no LPT1 port???

Can we possibly do the “resetting” via the serial port? Im pretty amazed how you did this trick.

Anyway, for people asking how to get your ATA password, there are a lot of utility disks like hiren boot cd that can erase your hard drives’s ata or pata passwords. 🙂 (though i had little success with it)

i have toshiba tecra m5 . we have install the bios update software an then next he ask me a password . this problem r also show on startup, when we r remove the harddisk . plz send me a soloution of this bios password problem

Unfortunately (or fortunately), Tecra laptops are more secure than other Toshiba laptops in the consumer line.
In order to unlock the BIOS, it’s necessary to call Toshiba and ask for the unlock key. But this could be done only by authorized Toshiba tech.
I guess you’ll have to take your laptop to the authorized repair center.

  179. please can you help me to unlock a tosheba tecra s11-11g .

  182. ноутбук toshiba tecra a8 – Был извлечен аккумулятор когда ноут находился в спящем режиме (ОС Windows XP). Теперь при включении после заставки Toshiba выдает черный экран и следующую надпись – “Resume Failure and Press any key to continue” в верхнем левом углу.

    @ marcelin kouakou,

je voudrais de l aide pour supprimer le mot de passe de ordinateur Toshiba tecra m5

Usually Toshiba Tecra laptops are more secure than regular consumer line. Most likely in order to remove the BIOS password you’ll have to take it to the authorized repair center. They will have to call Toshiba and get the unlock code.
