Toshiba Satellite A105 battery charging problem

posted in: Toshiba Problems | 231

Today I got Toshiba Satellite A105-S2712 for repair with the battery charging problem. It is a new model and we do not have a lot of experience with these laptops. The customer complained that the laptop will not charge the battery when it is plugged into the AC outlet.

The laptop failure symptoms:

The laptop will not turn on when I try to start it from the battery. When the laptop is turned off and plugged into the AC outlet the battery charge LED doesn’t light up. I know that the battery is not charged and the LED should light up when I plug the laptop into the AC outlet. The laptop starts fine when it is plugged. When I move the mouse over the Toshiba Power Icon in the lower right corner, the balloon will pop up and there is a line in there: Battery Remaining: N/A.

The problem repair procedure:

You can easily fix the problem just by updating the BIOS. Toshiba says that the BIOS version should be at least v1.30. So, go to Toshiba website and click on Downloads. Select your laptop model and find any downloads for the BIOS. In the BIOS change history you will see the description of changes.

After I updated the BIOS, the battery charging problem disappeared.

HELP Ive tried this and its not working for mine! I have a Satellite L25 S1194

  2. I have the same problem; however, not only will the battery not charge, the laptop will not even start up. any suggestions?

  3. cj2600

    Sam,
Try to remove the battery and wait for couple minutes. After that connect the AC adapter and try to turn on the laptop without the battery installed.
BTW, do you get any LED lights when you plug in the adapter? If not, then test the adapter first.

  4. hi

I have the same problem I far I remember if the laptop cooler is dead it wont start is might be a issue as well …

I tried all basic troubleshooting steps , that didn’t help… 🙁 adapter is working fine.. not power LED never light up.. I know my battery is empty. well is is not Toshiba laptop but it might be a global issue.. if any advice please drope me an e-mail … thanks..

I have the same problem have had my toshiba sattelite 1135 for about 3 years and suddenly the battery is not charging while the ac is on. The battery runs out and i have to shut down the computer and that is when the led orange light turns on charging. I downloaded the BIOS and is still having problems. Can anyone help.

  6. Hey Mark,
May be your problem somehow related to a failed power jack? Check out this post.

  7. Lourdes,
Does your laptop works on the AC power if you remove the battery? Can you see if the power LED or battery LED flickers when you wiggle the power plug on the back of the laptop?

  8. Gordon Miller

I have a 320 CDT Toshiba, The adaptor was lost, when I plug in another adaptor with same voltage I get what appears to be a code? the AC LED Flashes “53”, No other lights come on.

  9. Toshiba Satellite 320CDT requires 15V-2A AC adapter. Make sure that you are using a correct one. You’ll need an AC adapter that outputs 15Volts and 2 or more Amps.

  10. I removed the bios password on Satellite 105, and after that the laptop is completely blocked. Anyone can give me any advice?
    Drope me an e-mail thanks.

  11. Hey Eric,
How did you remove the BIOS password, through the BIOS setup? And what do you mean by “the laptop is completely blocked”? It will not boot at all or you are getting some kind of error on startup?

  12. I used the ERD commander, and not boot at all, and I got completily blank screen

  13. Eric,
With ERD Commander Locksmith utility you can remove a user password, not the BIOS password. Can you boot from ERD disk again? If the laptop is still bootable, you can use a recovery DVD and re-image the drive back to factory defaults. From the description you provided I cannot say if it’s a hardware or software failure.

  14. ann marie slater

the laptop while shutting down stopped and I can’t restart it.

  15. Ann,
It’s not enough to troubleshoot the laptop. What do you mean by “I can’t restart it”? It’s dead, not booting to Windows or what?
Check if the AC adapter works fine. It’s possible that the adapter has died and the laptop worked until the battery had some power. Now you cannot turn it on because there is no power left. It’s just a guess.

  16. Can Anybody help with a Toshiba Satellite A105 Recovery Disk Image? Tried Toshiba website both US and UK without joy. Hope to hear from you soon

  17. Alex,
You cannot download the recovery disk image from Toshiba website, but I think you can purchase it if you call Toshiba support line. It shouldn’t be very expensive. Last time one of my customers purchased a recovery DVD for under $40.

  18. Your power button may be dead like mine. See if you
can press the Web or Express media player right
below it. I use the Web button to power up.

  19. Stephen Asare

i have a toshiba satellite 2430-s255 , and i need drivers for the following
    i sound
    2.modem
    3. vga card
    4 unknown device

    plealse help me
    thank you

  20. Help! I also have the charging problem with a L25 S1194, it is not charging the battery. I flashed the BIOS, new battery, new and correct power supply. What now? The charging light is solid amber, on and off. I’ve done everything suggested above to no avail. Now What???

  21. Stephen Asare,
You can download all drivers from Toshiba website. If you follow the link, it’ll take you to download for your model. On the download page open Filter by Category menu and select Driver. The click on Apply Filter. After that you should get a list of all available device drivers for your laptop. I think that unknown device could be SD card.

  22. Brauny1,

Help! I also have the charging problem with a L25-S1194, it is not charging the battery. I flashed the BIOS, new battery, new and correct power supply.

I know it sucks but it looks like you have a bad motherboard. The battery connects directly to the motherboard and you already eliminated any other possible problems.

  23. JimClarey

I just got a new battery and let it charge for 24 hours. At work and at home, the laptop charges intermittantly. It worked fine three days ago, now it is not charging unless the laptop is “off.” I am hesitant to download the BIOS but will go out and get the diskettes if someone on here gives me the thumbs up. Seems it is the only way to boot the laptop going by their directions. Please advise. Jim

  24. Jim,
What it your laptop model? Try this. Turn on the laptop and wiggle the power plug. Can you see the LED lights flashing when you move the plug? Does the battery start charging when you wiggle the plug?
It’s possible that your problem is related to a bad connection between the power jack and the motherboard.

  25. JimClarey

    Firstly,
Thanks for the immediate responses. This site is great.Secondly, I jiggle the power cord(new) for the battery(also new) but the led lights do not change. Yesterday the thing worked great all day. I do not think it an outlet problem as I take the laptop from home to work. My laptop model is 1135-S125, rather old; three years I think. Thanks for the help on here. Jim

  26. Tan Huu Phuong

I Have A Toshiba Laptop A105-S4014. It is Dump when login windows. But it is ok when i disable Lan card in bios. Pls tell me how to repair it. I upgared bios.

  27. WISSAM GHANEM

DIR SIR , I HAVE A PROBLEM IN MY TOSHIBA TECRA A3 WHEN I PLUG THE AC CURRENT THE POWER LED FLASH AND THE BATTERY DOESNT CHARGE SO WHEN I CHARGE THE BATTERY ON OTHER LAPTOP IT WORK S FINE TILL IT BECOMES EMPTY THANK U I HOPE I GET THE ANSWER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
    THANK YOU

  28. Tan Huu Phuong,
May be you have a corrupted or incorrect LAN driver installed and it somehow kills Windows? Can you boot to Windows in safe mode? Try uninstalling the LAN driver.
I would probably try reloading the laptop back to original factory defaults using a recovery DVD. It might be just a software issue.

  29. Wissam Ghanem,

I HAVE A PROBLEM IN MY TOSHIBA TECRA A3 WHEN I PLUG THE AC CURRENT THE POWER LED FLASH AND THE BATTERY DOESNT CHARGE

The power LED flashes orange? Does the laptop start at all from the AC adapter or from the battery? Have you tried removing the battery and starting the laptop just from the AC adapter without battery installed?

  30. I have a problem with Toshiba M105-S3041. The laptop charges intermittently though the Power cord light is always on when Power cord is on. I took it to Toshiba Service Center ( under warranty) and they changed both the motherboard and CPU. For a week it was fine, but the same problem is recurring. Also computer does not start without battery. I have updated Bios. Any suggestions to what I could do? Thank you.

  31. I am trying to repair an l25, it was running off battery, but with an intermittent (wiggle connector) charge. It finally decided to not work at all with a dead battery. I assumed it was a loose connector and went ahead and resoldered, but I have determined that it isn’t the problem, as most of the power circuit seems to be charged. It isn’t a bios problem either. Any ideas on the problem of a way to fix it, as I can’t seem to find schematics?

  32. Jenn Schmitz

I am having the Toshiba Satelite battery problem also. Unfortunitly the serial code on the bottom of my computer has worn out and I can not see what model I have. It’s the big 17″ monitor and is now 2 ears old if that helps.
What can I do this battery problem is a big hassel.
    THANK-YOU!!

  33. I have the Toshiba Satelite L25-S1194 and my battery will not charge more then 7%. My first AC charger from Toshiba burned out so I bought the Targus replacement AC charger. My computer runs when pluged into the charger but will not charge. The battery light stays a solid amber. I am starting to think I have a defective computer since so many things have been breaking on it.
I’m willing to try anything and this laptop is only a year old.

  34. desperate!!!

hey i have a toshiba laptop A105 – S2712 but im not sure how to charge it and it wont turn on plz help!!!!!

  35. i read about satellite a105-2712 with battery problem. i had the same model of laptop and the same problem. i follow your suggest to download the new BIOS. i download Flash BIOS version 1.70 for Satellite A100 (the latest version i guess) i install from windows. it finish installing but the problem still there. the battery still not charging. what should i do now? thanks a lot before and after.

  36. Omnibook

I have HP Omnibook 500. Laptop powers up and works fine on AC charges, but shuts down and does not power up on battery. I even replaced the battery with a new one but still it does not work on battery at all. Any ideas?

  37. Daniel,
when I look up for the latest version of BIOS for Satellite A105-S2712 it shows up as version 1.80 released on 01/19/2007. Try this one, in the change history it says: “Modified the AC plug in charging code so the system will do a pre-charge for 3 seconds prior to quick charging”. I don’t really understand what it means 😛 but they modified the charging code somehow. If it doesn’t help, probably you have a hardware related issue, maybe a bad battery.
Unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery, press and hold down the power button for about 30 seconds. Install the battery and try charging it again. Not sure if it’s going to help but try it just in case.

  38. I have a problem with my Toshiba Satellite laptop a105 , I can’t see my LAN Device in Network Connections & the light at laptop Back = Orange light (LAN light) What’s the problem ?

  39. THANK YOU SO MUCH, LAN PORT IT’S WORKING NOW, JUST ONE MORE QUESTION, WHERE I CAN DOWNLOAD “SOUND DRIVERS” FOR “SATELLITE A105-361” THAT TOSHIBA LINK NOT WORK WITH ME, DOWNLOAD IT AND INSTAL BUT THE SOUND NOT WORK ON “WINXPSP2” I HAVE 2 OS ON MY MACHINE (WIN XP & UBUNTU) THE “SOUND” WORK IN UBUNTU WITHOUT DRIVER ?

THIS DRIVER INFORMATION FROM TOSHIBA((Realtek Audio Driver for Windows XP (v5.10.0.5188; 12-06-2005; 22.98M))

  40. I have a Toshiba Satellite modle # PSA60U-0KT06N
It was not having any problems to start, but started running slower then stoped, it will not boot or post at all, when pluged into AC the AC light is green, and the battery light is amber, and never changing. I let it sit for a few days to see if it would charge or make any difference but it does not. If I try to power it up all the lights just shut off and it does nothing, perhaps someone can point me in the right direction? it is not under warranty.

  41. gracey foster

I have a Satellite A105-2712. it cant start windows set up error is showing that file\i386.exe cannot be found, error code 7. we called toshiba call center and they told us that i just need to used the recovery cd but we dont have it… does anybody here had the same problem? pls. help me. thanks.

  42. cj2600

    gracey foster,
Some Toshiba laptops are sold without recovery disks. You have to create a set of recovery CDs or DVD yourself buy running a preinstalled Toshiba utility.
If you don’t have the recovery DVD try calling Toshiba and purchase it from them, it shouldn’t be very expensive.

  43. OK, I love this site, I have the same problems as most of you people, but when i goto the Toshiba web site to find updates for the BIOS etc. I find I get stuck at Model #, I looked on the back and all I see are a Part# and Serial# and another number

    Here is the other number
    PA3374U-1MPC

    Part#
    PSA70C-ABZ00E

Now none of these are listed, so I must have the Model number wrong??

I am going in a day, sit down and take apart my A70 Satellite and fix the plug issue, the heat sink problem with a good cleaning, I am just backing up files right now. I have all the tools ready to go even down the pick. I can’t wait.

But to update my bios I need to know model number and well I am stuck if you can help email me. or post here.

    Thanks
    David
    ps. great site.

  44. cj2600

    David,
Looks like it’s a Canadian model.
BTW, there is no laptop listed with PSA70C-ABZ00E, but there is one with PSA70C-AB200E (2 not Z)

  45. You right cj2600

PSA70C-AB200E was the model# and yes it is Canadian, but after checking the drivers, they are mostly all dated year 04. Oh well. 😉

After I open this up, fix it, I am going to give it to the parents. 😉

    Thank you for your response.

    David

I have a Toshiba Satellite A55-S106 which is a little over a year old. I also have a Satellite 1605CDS

I’m here to tell you that when I purchased the first one (used) and the second one (new) I had every intention of a “toshiba only” mentality (comparable to the “I drive only ford f-150 trucks only” mentality).

In short, I’m ready for a new ride. Toshiba blows mad cow udders.

And not for nothing, but having done a bit of scouring, past all the corporate crap they’ve littered on our once fun internet, to attempt to locate any semblance of information pertaining to these faulty laptops and more specifically their error codes (pretty lights….pretty god-damned expensive lights!!!)….

and where do i end up? right here.

p.s. anyone in the market for a couple of satellites cheap?

    Call me 727-359-4882

  47. Kenny Hendrick

Okay let me elaborate on that last post. The A55-S106 Satellite by Toshiba is a bit over a year old and was the one that was bought new.

It’s in pieces but all the pieces with the exception of some case screws (outside case) and only lights come on (does not boot to anything).

The other one (the used 1605CDS) was fine till last night (3/27/07) then I get these light sequences and no boot up!!

  48. I just recently got a Toshiba m105. It was working great but out of nowhere I started to have trouble charging it. Sometimes I could charge it while using it & other times it wouldn’t work unless it was off. Then it got to the point where if I plugged the charger in, it wouldn’t charge at all even if the indicator light said it was charging. One night when the laptop was @ 0% I kept on position the ac adapter in different ways, moving the laptop, pluging the cord in with a bit more force & somehow when I went to turn it on, it had charged up to 33%. So I’m assuming & hoping that I just need to replace the adapter. I left it alone for a few days & now the power idicator light flickers blue OR remains blue & other the other lights turn orange when I plug in the adapter. I tried to run the laptop w/o the battery attached w/ the ac adapter only & it wouldn’t work either. Does anybody have any suggestions as to fixing this problem =( ??

  49. oddly enough, I just removed the battery, pluged in the ac adapter, turned it on & it WORKED… for about 2 minutes untill it just automatically shut off.

  50. cj2600

    Carol,

One night when the laptop was @ 0% I kept on position the ac adapter in different ways, moving the laptop, plugging the cord in with a bit more force & somehow when I went to turn it on, it had charged up to 33%.

Sounds like a bad AC adapter or something is wrong with the power jack inside the laptop.
Find a voltmeter and test the AC adapter. Find out if the power cuts off when you move the power cord, you might have a damaged wire inside the cord. If the power is stable when you move the power cord, it’s possible you have a problem with the power jack.

  51. Mauricio

    I have a Toshiba A10 SP100
Today while I wok in the laptop, suddenly turn off and I cant turn on.
The only working led is the first (AC) and is blinking in ambar color.
I try to tes without battery and the same, and only with battery with some problem. The 15v are OK (tested).
I also try to remode HD, Memory (one, test, put again, remove the second, test..) wireless network card (mini pci) and still have the problem.
    any idea?

  52. Hi, i have a similar problem to Carol. I have a Toshiba Satellite AS35-209 and it doesnt charge while the lid is up. However the moment i close the top, it starts charging. What can i do about this? Will updating the BIOS help ?

    Thanks

  53. cj2600

    Mauricio,
It’s hard to guess what is wrong with your laptop but in most cases a blinking amber color power LED indicates a problem with the motherboard.

  54. I’m having the same problem as Carol with my M105, I think. One additional complication that I have is that sometimes when the power cord is unplugged or “unplugged” from the computer, the computer doesn’t register that. So even though it’s getting no juice, it doesn’t use any power saving techniques and just runs through the battery really fast. I would think that you were right with replacing the socket (since jostling the cord around seems to make it charge), but that doesn’t explain this other problem, which started at the exact same time. Should I just send it back to Toshiba, you think?
    Thanks for the help.

  55. cj2600

    Scott,
I would make sure the laptop runs the latest BIOS version. Upgrade the BIOS if needed, it might help to resolve the issue without sending the laptop to Toshiba. If the problem is still there even after upgrading the BIOS and your laptop is still under warranty, then I would suggest sending it to Toshiba. Make sure to make a good note about the problem you are experiencing and include it with the laptop.

  56. apurwanto

I’m having problem with my laptop accer. my laptop can’t charge battrey.when i use battrey and plugged to AC outlet, laptop still can run but it take electric from batrey and battrey not charge. meanwhile if i’m unplug the battrey so direct from adaptor AC outlet without battrey my laptop can run properly. I don’t know with my laptop.
Can you suggest to me what should I do with it.

  57. cj2600

    apurwanto,
If I understand correctly, your laptop runs fine from the AC outlet when the battery is removed. It also runs from the AC outlet when the battery is installed but the battery will not charge. Is it right?
I think you might have a bad battery. If a new battery will not resolve the issue and you still cannot charge it, there could be something wrong with the motherboard.

  58. Kenny Hendrick

    Sigh….

Can anybody recommend a good do-it-yourself kit (like does radio shack sell the kit so I can make my own crappy computer?)

  59. richard74

Exellent!! the bios was the problem, I just install the new bios software and work grate, now the battery works, thanks!!!

  60. Great Site,
I have an A105-S2716 that has been working flawlessly for the past year and 1/2. I was working on it last night, left it alone for a couple of hours and when I came back the screen was black, it was shut down and no LEDs. Now it will not boot up, still no LEDs, but when the AC adapter is plugged in I can hear a very faint clicking sound that is coming from the general area where the fan is located on the bottom. It will not do anything when the power button is pushed. I tried vacuuming it out with no change. Does this sound like motherboard or hard drive failure? Or maybe something else.
    Thanks For your help.

  61. cj2600

    Ryan,
If I understood right, there are no LED lights at all, but the laptop is making a clicking sound when you plug the AC adapter (even though there are no LED lights), right?
I don’t think this is a problem with the harddrive disk. When you have a faulty harddrive disk, you still should get LED lights when you plug the adapter.
Try this. Remove all extra devices you can access from the bottom – battery, DVD drive, harddrive disk, memory cards and plug in the AC adapter. If you still have no LED lights and the laptop is still making the same clicking sound, probably you have a bad motherboard.
Here’s one more thing to try. Find a voltmeter and test the AC adapter. Make sure it outputs correct voltage. I think it’s possible that you have a bad AC adapter and it doesn’t provide enough power to start up the laptop. This is just a guess.

  62. célia

Hey, I’ve had the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite M30. I’ve tride updating the BIOS like you recommended, but to do this, I need to have sufficient battery which, by definition, is not the case!! Can you help? How can I update my Bios if my battery does not charge?

    Thank you

  63. My boyfriend took my ac adapter to be measured by a voltmeter. UNFORTUNATLY he can’t remember what the measure was but he did say that at 1st the voltmeter didn’t read any charge on it but then all of a sudden there was a spark & the reading went up. Is it fair to say that my AC adapter isn’t working? Or is that sort of behavior normal?

    Additional Info:
    – When I plug my ac adapter it only charges 1/5 of the time.
    – On extreamly rare occasions, my lap top runs on the ac power alone.
    – Other times the lap top wont turn on or charge, and the lights just flicker blue. (I’m not sure what the flickering means).
    – Once in a while the lap top will be off & the lights indicate it’s charging but when I leave it alone for an hour & try to turn it on it doesn’t.
    – If by any chance I manage to turn it on at all its more than likely that it’ll shut off automatically on me.
    – I find that if I move the lap top around a little or apply more pressue/force when I plug in the ac adapter , I can get the lights to stop flickering blue & begin to indicate that it’s being charge

what a headache!! =( Any ideas or answers as to what is going on? & what I should do to get my lap top working again?!

  64. I also forgot to mention that if I manage to get it to charge it never charges 100% more like 4% … the best i’ve gotten was 75% which was a TOTAL MIRACLE & DASH OF LUCK, if you ask me.

    thnx =)

  65. Miguel Morales

    I have a Satellite A10-SP100
It doesn’t turn on, when I try, the only working led is the first (AC) and is blinking in ambar color.
It gives me a code of 8 blinks with the 2nd; 5th; 6th; and 7th longer than the rest
Do you have any idea? At least where can I get the information of what the code means?

  66. cj2600

    Miguel Morales,
Even if you find out what the code means, probably it’s not going to help a lot. Most likely it will tell you that you have to replace the motherboard.
Here’s what I would try. Minimize the laptop as much as you can, remove the battery, DVD drive, hard drive, wireless card, modem. Test the laptop again with the AC adapter first and then with the battery. Reseat the memory module, move it from one slot to another, try different combinations if you have two modules installed.
Finally, reseat all cable and connections inside the laptop.
If you still experience the same problem, apparently you have a bad motherboard.

  67. Hey When i plug in my laptop it charges some of the time while on but not all the time. On the other hand it always chages when its off….

  68. andrea6315

I have an A 105 S4004 that has been having some battery problems. Recently my battery has not even been lasting an hour, when it used to last almost 3 hours. This change happened out of no where. When I plug my computer in, I need to let it charge for hours in order for it to reach 100%. The weird this is that the battery icon always says 100% or 4%…… if i unplug the computer before it is 100% charged it will say 4% (even if its been charging for an hour). Once I am using it, it will stay at 100% and then jump down to 4% and eventually die. I’ve downloaded the bios but that is not the problem. I would replace the batter but I am not sure if it is the battery or a problem with the software that is causing the computer to die because the icon is wrong. I’ve only had the comp. for a little over a year. Of course when this problem began it was about a week after my warrenty ended!

  69. Stephanie

PLZ help me! Okay i did what you said and i have now an icon on my computer and i click it and it has 4 different types to choose from so i choose the directions o something like that and it like reinstalled and it is not working and when i hover over my battery it says 0% charging (plugged in, charging)! please help me out! If you can then can you email me cause i probabaly will forget to check back here!

  70. Just so everyone with charging problems knows. My problem was that it couldn’t withstand charging and powering on at the same time. The orange charging led turns off when starting computer and forces computer to run off battery. Downloaded a power saving program called NHC. Changed all setting to use intel’s speed switching tech., and to run CPU at half speed, to conserve battery power. In 1/2 speed cpu mode, it rarely ever cuts battery charging when starting. Hope this helps someone.

  71. robert

please i need your assistance ,i have this toshiba satellite1905-s301 i formatted my laptop and upgraded it to windows xp unlimited but the battery icon which shows the battery charge level isnt there anymore ,so once its on i just see ON AV POWER and nothing shows when the battery is weak it just goes off …please advice me on what to do to get it on the right bottom corner or on my laptop

  72. Robert,

but the battery icon which shows the battery charge level isn’t there anymore

    1. I think you can enable this icon on the taskbar in Power Option Properties, you’ll find this utility in Control Panel.
    2. If you are using Toshiba Power Management utility, try enabling the taskbar icon in there.

  73. I have a Satellite A105-S2061, it’s a little over a year old and recently I noticed that I wasn’t getting any battery power. The laptop would load and everything. but it had to be on AC power. I can’t even unplug it for a few seconds to change outlets without the computer shutting off. Lately though I can get the laptop to boot up and it will even load for a few minutes but then it will shut down. I downloaded the BIOS and it actually started shutting off sooner. I removed the battery and started the system only running on AC power and it lasted a little longer, but when I put the battery back on it went back to its old ways. I’ve had a lot of problems out of this computer and as such I would hate to buy a new battery only to find out that it’s a problem with the laptop. If anyone has only suggestions I’d be grateful.

  74. herbert

Please help. My satellite 105 S2051 is perfectly fine then suddenly the battery stops working. I cant turn it on using the battery but will work fine when on ac power. The battery indicator always say 100% battery remaining. I downloaded the bios upgrade but the battery is still not working. I remove the battery and put it back again but nothing happens. It still wont turn on and needs to be plugged in ac power. When I tried removing the battery and use only the ac power its perfectly fine. what do you think is the problem? the battery or the laptop?

  75. Kelli,

I removed the battery and started the system only running on AC power and it lasted a little longer

It sounds like your laptop shuts down even when it runs on AC power without the battery installed. Is it correct or I’m missing something?

  76. herbert,
Can you start the laptop from AC power and when it boots into Windows unplug the AC power an run from the battery? Will it run on the battery power or it shuts down as soon as you unplug the AC adapter?

  77. herbert

thank you so much for your response. the laptop shuts down as soon as i unplug the AC adapter.it wont run on battery.but the light for battery is always green when its plugged in AC adapter. i ‘l appreciate your opinion very much

  78. herbert,
Unfortunately, at this point I cannot tell you if this is a problem with the battery itself or you have a failed battery charging circuit on the motherboard. You’ll have to guess. In this model the battery plugs directly into the motherboard, so it’s either the battery fault or the motherboard fault. To find out, you’ll have to test the laptop with a known good battery.
You can try this. Not sure if it’s going to work, but you have nothing to loose. Remove the battery from the laptop for a week or two. When the battery is not plugged, it should loose some charge overtime. Test the battery after that.
If it doesn’t help, I would try replacing the battery with a new one.

  79. herbert

thank you so much for your suggestion. i will unplug the battery and let it drain. if nothing happens i will try to find a new battery. thank you again

    Lourdes,
Does your laptop works on the AC power if you remove the battery? Can you see if the power LED or battery LED flickers when you wiggle the power plug on the back of the laptop?

The answer for me is no , soon as i take the battery out, it goes off . It charges only when powered off and takes hours to charge once on and with charger plugged in, it recognizes , says its charging on the little icon but just loses power as if Im running off the battery. when the charger is plugged in i get a orange color ./

  82. hi,
ive been using toshiba satellite A105 model for about 14 months now, and about a month back when i would move the mouse over the batt. recharge icon it use to show batt. 103% on a full charge and since the last few days it shows batt. 0%.
when i take the AC out the laptop only runs for 5sec and shuts off, when i plug the power cord back on, the batt. recharge light (orange light) comes on for only 5 sec. and then no more light, the green light that use to come on a full recharge doesnt come anymore.
can anyone tell me whats going on???
its only been a little more than a yr. how could the batt. run
    out.
i cant use the laptop of batt. nomore, it works fine on AC power.

  83. Toshiba A100 – Works with a charged battery, will not work on AC power nor will it charge the battery. Have checked the DC Jack and leads – all good. Bad Motherboard?

    thanks

  84. Dee,
Maybe there is something wrong with the AC adapter. Is it the original adapter that came with the laptop? Check the voltage provided by the AC adapter, make sure the voltage is the same as it’s stated on the adapter.

  85. Dr.YK,

when i would move the mouse over the batt. recharge icon it use to show batt. 103% on a full charge and since the last few days it shows batt. 0%.

Never seen that battery shows 103% of charge. I believe it shouldn’t be more then 100%.

when i take the AC out the laptop only runs for 5sec and shuts off

I think you have dead battery.

  86. Joe,
Did you check the AC adapter?

  87. cj2006,
ya thats why i think too dead battery but in 14months only…!!!
also someone told me that they repair batteries by putting in Li-ions in it or something like that. is that true??
    pls. let me know.
    Thanks.

  88. Dr.YK,
Not sure, never done it myself.

  89. Well well well.. It appears im not alone. I have a Satellite L25 S119 and cant get either my original battery, or my BRAND SPANKING NEW one to charge. I tried everything mentioned here with the exception of dismantling my laptop and digging into the motherboard.

Is there a recall or any information about this problem on toshibas website?? I doubt it.. Please someone help us all….

  90. RE: Toshiba A105 S2091 Battery problem resloved! History:
New Toshibab Satellite A105 purchased May 2006. A few months later Toshiba recalled the original battery & sent me a replacement. Right from the beginning instead of getting 40-45 minutes like I used to, only getting maximum 30 minutes use. I updated my Bios to V2.2 but the battery continued to deteriorate & really started to lose power a month or so ago, with useage dropping to as little as 2 or 3 minutes until finally it would no longer even power up the laptop. Same symptoms as many on the Web: the yellow charge light would come on for about 10 seconds or so then turn off with the battery showing 0% charge. I was just about ready to throw it away last week when I remembered an old trick we used to use for many re-chargeable batteries that were losing their charge: put the battery in the freezer for 30 minutes or so, then try to charge again. I brought back quite a few batteries doing that over the past 25 years. I had no idea if a Lithium Ion would act the same but it did! I placed mine in the freezer for 30 minutes, took it out and put it back in the Toshiba. The yellow charge light turned on AND STAYED ON. I couldn’t believe it a first, but after approximately 4 hours, the battery was back to 100% charge and back to giving me approx. 30 minutes of use. It has since been through at least a half dozen discharge/charge cycles & is still working. Just thought I would pass along this old trick & hopefully it will work for someone else too!

  91. I have a Toshiba M105-S3064 and after a Windows Update reboot yesterday my computer won’t get past POST. It keeps asking me for a password, which I have never set. I know this is a “known” problem for some Toshiba laptops but I didn’t see my model listed there. Is there a half-way easy way to reset the cmos and clear out the pw, or poss a master generic pw, or am I stuck sending it off and being without it for a while? Thanks.

  92. Jimmy,
You’ll have to send your laptop to Toshiba or take it to the authorized repair center.

  93. Val Ames

I have a Satellite A100-523 model: PSAA2E and am having same trouble charging battery. The charge light goes on when connected to mains power and stays on for a number of hours but finally goes out without indicating battery is charged and charge still indicates 0%. As the model number is not listed in any of the model options I can’t even try downloading the BIOS to see if this helps. Am I missing something in identifying model? Or is there anything else I can try and get battery to charge. Computer is only around 20 months old so can’t believe the battery is simply dead!

  94. to Val Ames,
lk for the model no on the battery near the bar codes on it.

  95. Wayne,

these toshiba batteries are messed up man, iam glad too see that iam not the only deceased here 🙂

Maybe there is something wrong with the AC adapter? Test voltage with a voltmeter and make sure it’s the same as labeled on the adapter.

  99. I have a toshiba satellite that I just bought. The battery will charge up to 99% and then discharge to zero when on a/c power. I cant get it to go to 100%. I have tried to get a new battery. This is the third one. I might have it looked at. But if you have any insight please tell me. My Bios is up to date also. I have a satellite A-1357406

  100. Steve,

The battery will charge up to 99% and then discharge to zero when on a/c power. I cant get it to go to 100%. I have tried to get a new battery. This is the third one.

If you have tried three different batteries and still experience the same problem, most likely it’s not related to the battery. Apparently there is a problem with the motherboard and it has to be replaced. If the laptop is still under warranty then take it to the authorized repair center and they’ll fix it.
Just in case, check the BIOS version installed on your laptop and try updating it to the latest one if it’s available for downloads from the Toshiba website.

  101. I have a toshiba laptop model number PA3374U-1MPC

i hav a problem with toshiba tectra a3 my son mistakely plug ac adpter meant for a printer since then it stop charging, charging light will be bliking when plug to ac instead of being steady.
Any body to help me with this?

  103. Jose Barreto

I got the replacement battery for one Toshiba Satellite that comes originally with windows 98. So you can figure how old is it. Now runs under Service Pack 2. When I check the battery for the first time my windows shows 35% charge. Then I keep it charging a day long. The external battery light always ligths o.k, but after that windows tells that it is charging but never pass 35% charge as it did when I replace the battery. Any idea?

  104. cj2600

    Godwill,

i have a problem with toshiba tectra a3 my son mistakenly plug ac adapter meant for a printer since then it stop charging

How this adapter for printer is rated? Does it output higher voltage?
Try this. Turn off the laptop, unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery and keep it unplugged and without the battery for a minute. After that plug in the battery and test it again.

  105. cj2600

    Jose Barreto,
It’s hard to tell what is going on without testing the laptop.
Try this. Unplug the adapter and use the laptop until the battery dies. After that try charging it again.
Also, you can try to boot your laptop from a Knoppix CD (Live Linux OS). Wait until the laptop boots to the desktop and take a look at the battery status in the lower right corner (same as Windows). If you still see same 35%, it’s a hardware related problem. As you replaced the battery already and still have the same problem, apparently it’s related to the motherboard or battery charge board if it’s a separate module in your laptop.
If Knoppix detects battery charge correctly, you have a software related issue. Try reinstalling the OS.

  106. Thanks. I found out my laptop won’t charge the battery, because the battery I got was from a third party company. I received a battery from Toshiba and the battery works perfectly. It might not charge as quickly but it charges to 100% so. Thanks for all the help

    Hello,,

it seems that the charging electronic kissed goodbye,,which Means,, “Malfunction” So, in this case you must send your Machine to an ASP ‘Authorised Service Provider’ for a hardware checkup and repair of that component.

  111. I got a Toshiba A 105-s4211,
The power adapter for my laptop got burnt and screwed up,

i found another charger from the market with similar specifications but different models, however it has screwed my battery,

now, it doesnt charge my battery, when the laptop is powered on, the power options sections shows the battery as charging but then there is this red cross line on the battery secton as well.

i also expereinced screen flickering problem after i bought this new power adapter,

is this an adapter problem or is my battery charging kit become malfunctioning?

i bought another chinese charger that allows to laptop to be charged in car as well as on aeroplane, this one is a multiple charger and has various options to adjust voltage input, but the current input is 3.75A while my note book requires minimum 5A,

    does it matter?

i want to know, if my battery is screwd up or if the battery charging kit is scewed up , and will it help if i get a new battery and a new charger.

  112. cj2600

    andy,

i bought another chinese charger that allows to laptop to be charged in car as well as on aeroplane, this one is a multiple charger and has various options to adjust voltage input, but the current input is 3.75A while my note book requires minimum 5A

When you purchase a new power adapter for your laptop you should follow this rule: The voltage output on the power adapter should be exactly the same as required by the laptop. If your laptop requires 15V, your new adapter should output 15V. The current output on the power adapter should be the same or higher. If your laptop requires 5A, your new adapter output should be 5A or higher.

Personally, I don’t like all these adapter with adjustable voltage. For some reason, I don’t trust them.

now, it doesn’t charge my battery, when the laptop is powered on, the power options sections shows the battery as charging but then there is this red cross line on the battery section as well.

I cannot tell you what is wrong without testing the laptop with another known good power adapter.
    1. Could be bad power adapter.
    2. Could be dead battery.
    3. Maybe the battery charging circuit (integrated into the motherboard) is screwed.

Also, make sure you have the latest BIOS installed.

Just in case, you can find a new AC adapter if you search using the part number V000061220 or V000061210.

  113. ken mitchell

Miguel Morales: the code mentioned states that the P1.8V supply is below 1.44V during boot-up. So, the processor will NOT operate.

  114. I have a Gateway 450SX4 I have been trying to fix now for about 3 weeks. I have searched and read about every page on the internet and not found any solutions yet. It will not charge the battery. Here is what I have tried so far. Power adapters. I have a brand new name brand 19v 90w (4.2amp I think) tested power adapter hooked to it. I have tried several but Im currently using this one. It has an up to date BIOS. I have had a new power jack solderd on the board. The light on front turns amber like it is charging and after about 5 min it turns red. In the power management software it says “online discharging” 0%. After a day in laptop charging I pushed the little button on the side of the battery and no lights. Battery is dead. In the BIOS I tried the battery recondition thing (Smart Battery Auto-Learning). After 5 min it tells me “Battery Malfunction cannot get battery model”. I bought another battery off eBay and tried it. I got the same results. I found a secondary battery that goes into where the cd-rom goes. I thought maybe something was wrong with the place where the battery normally goes. It sees the battery, knows its a secondary battery but gives me the same results. I checked the pins in the battery compartment with the adapter plugged in and im getting 3.2 volts. Is this the normal volts going to a battery? Did I some how get lucky and end up with 3 bad batterys that were supose to be good? Do I have a bad charging circuit? What am I missing? Thank you for any help on this. Shane

  115. Shane,
If you still have the same problem with new power adapters and different batteries, apparently you have something wrong with the motherboard. I cannot tell you what is wrong, but most likely it’s related to the motherboard.

  116. elena s.

i m using a toshiba satellite A100.when i push the power button my laptop seems totally dead, abosolutely no led activity is shown.today i took it to a service centre and they told me that it might be a motherboard problem.and they took out the battery and now i can only use it only when the power source is AC power.and i cant use it even from the AC power source if i have the battery connected to the laptop.
can anyone tell me how long i can use it with a faulty motherboard?:(

  117. Elena S,
Could be bad battery or bad motherboard. The only way to find out witch one is bad is testing the laptop with another known good battery.

can anyone tell me how long i can use it with a faulty motherboard?

You can use the laptop until the motherboard fails completely.

  118. elena s.

    cj2600
well i tried it with new battery ..so its a motherboard problem for sure:(
well i know that i can use it untill the motherboard completely fails..but can anyone predict when will it completely die.i have only been using it for 9 months,i cant even claim for a new motherboard from toshiba as it was a gift from my uncle who has lost all the papers:(

Trying to help my daughter get her computer fixed.

    It’s a Satellite A 105 Toshiba

Can’t turn it on again— she keeps buying new cords & new batteries—but this is not the problem. She usually leaves it plugged in –so not to discharge the battery.

SAw where some one said to go to the Toshiba site and download–BUT we can’t get the thing to turn on– a yellow blinks for a couple seconds and then it all goes dead.

Any help would be most appreciated.

  124. I have a problem with the battery. I upgraded the software and while my computer is still plugged in the battery is still coming up! This is so frustrating any advice?

  125. jerry Pierce

    Here’s a reply for Barbara

I had (still have) that same problem. My wife/kids only would use the laptop plugged into the wall. I think this eventually ruined the battery; but still working that problem.

With constantly using the power adaptor; as well as moving it from the couch to the table to the chair (and on and on) something worked loose in the power jack inside the computer itself. I just finished disassembling my laptop to about 200 pieces LOL. I finally got the power plug out and tested it. I’m not 100% sure where the problem lies, but I believe it is in the actual jack itself, not the wiring. I am thinking the inside part worked loose from the rear connection where the wires solder to.

Unfortunatly, this can be an expensive fix if a shop does it. However, if you follow the disassembly guide on this site and remove the power connector yourself, you can probably pick one up fairly cheap. It may only need a touch of solder to fix it as well. I am going to try all that tomorrow and see where it gets me..

    Good Luck!

  126. My L30 has a similar problem.
I know the charger works, yet the battery won’t charge.
I heard that the L30 and M30 always get problems to do with the battery, so i checked if it was the battery by removing it and pluggin in the charger. This ran it through the mains, and it didnt turn on.
could the problem be the pin? or the battery pack itself?
    how could i fix this?

  127. Need help desperately! Two days ago I had my laptop plugged into the wall socket and on sleep mode for several hours. When I came back my power adapter was dead and battery at 5%. After inspecting the adapter which originally came with the computer I noticed two small melt marks. The adapter itself smelled like burnt metal. Needless to say it no longer works. The next day I went to a computer repair store and the owner sold me a universal power supply with extra add on bits. We set the plug and all worked fine while on the computer for several hours. Afterwards I packed up my laptop and headed to the club where I work as a dj at. I set up the laptop and started to play music off it.
Suddenly within 15 minutes of being powered up the screen went blank. The blue power switch however remained on and the music coming out of my computer was still playing. I could not get the screen to go back on. At this point I switched over to an external CD player in the club which is not connected to my computer and rebooted my laptop.
On the reboot everything seemed to work fine again but battery power was down to around 5%. My battery is old and when charged at 100% lasts about 35-40 minutes. Within about 10 minutes into rebooting the computer this time it fully shutdown with 300 people staring at me and no music playing. Highly stressful to say the least.
On checking the computer today a friend did a voltmeter test and the new universal adapter voltage was very stable.
I tried disconnecting the plug a few times to see what happens with the battery, sometimes the battery will discharge with the power supply plugged in. I tried various times to plug it back in but it still continues to discharge. If I shut the laptop off and reboot then the battery goes back into charge mode.
I’m honestly losing my mind with this. I don’t know what else to do to troubleshoot this problem. Is this a power adapter, the power connector to the computer or a battery issue?
I still do not understand why my original adapter burnt out on me in the first place. Any thoughts, suggestions would bew highly appreciated.

  128. My Toshiba A105 battery would not hold a charge anymore. No matter what I did to try and solve the problem, the computer would turn off immediately after I lost connection with the AC source. It would power down instantly. I had a solid amber light whenever the laptop was plugged in, but remaining battery life would show NA. I tried updating BIOS, cleaning the battery and changing power settings. After all of this, remaining battery life would still show NA. The solution was relatively simple. I ordered a used battery from e-bay, paying about $50. Now, everything works fine. I spent a lot of time researching the problem. It could have been a faulty motherboard or a connection that needed to be soldered. Thankfully, it was not a bigger problem, but simply a bad battery.

  129. i have a sattelite a135-s4467 i upgraded the bios to 1.70 with winphlash after setting @ the splash screen for three hours i powered it off now it will not boot past “mouse initialized” i have tried booting it with every bios burned to a cd and that is as far as it get.

I have a Toshiba P-25 laptop computer. The battery light goes off, then the computer quits. I unplug the computer and plug it back in and the battery charges up again. This repeats itself over time until the battery will not charge up to show a green light. Then the computer makes a clicking sound and quits. Even with the battery charging light on, the computer clicks and quits. The run time keeps geeting shorter until it reaches the point that the computer will only run a few seconds.
I have sent the computer to Toshiba twice, the replaced the charger and it worked for another years plus.
I bought a third party charger and it lasted two weeks before the computer problems started again. The company told me their charger was OK, but my battery was bad. I have an older Toshiba laptop with a dead battery and it works as long as it is plugged in.
It appears to me that there is something wrong with the computer, but everytime I buy a new charger, the computer works.

You can test the power adapter with a voltmeter. If the adapter outputs correct voltage, most likely you have a problem with the motherboard.

  135. bizrunner

    Hi cj2600,

I have a problem similar to some of the battery issues mentioned above. I own a Toshiba Satellite A65, which has already had its motherboard replaced by a certified Toshiba repair shop (overheating/shutdown problem) and had its BIOS updated. Ever since I purchased the laptop, the best battery life I got was 45 minutes. Over time, the original battery would no longer hold a charge, so I very recently purchased a non-oem battery on ebay with much higher capacity (6600 mAH) compared to the original one. I charged up the new battery as per the instructions, but the laptop never showed a green light to indicate a full charge after charging it for 17+ hours, it only showed the amber charging light. Once I powered it on to see where it stood, the power capacity read-out was 46% out of 100%. I shut it down and left the charger on for an extra hour, but the power level was still at 46% when I checked it. So, I followed the full discharge method and got a decent 1.5 hours out of the new battery, but since then, it would only show a 2% charge even though I charged it for many hours. The battery just does not appear to accept the charge, and dies after 2 minutes. I checked the adapter, which seems to work just fine as a power source on its own, and the charging lights appear to be working normally. I checked the Toshiba website, and the BIOS updates, which were few and far between, did not describe any changes that were supposed to correct any battery issues. In your opinion, given all that I have described, does this seem like a motherboard issue or a potential bad battery? Thank you very much for your assistance.

    Regards,

    Hi,
I have a Satellite A105 and am having battery charging problems. I thought my adapter needed to be replaced but when I push power it did not turn on but I did get 10 blinking yellow lights by the battery. Do you think it is the battery or the charger – i can’t get power to update the bios as an earlier post suggest.

    Thanks you

PS – I am hoping that this is the extint of my problems power

  137. R Wright,

I thought my adapter needed to be replaced but when I push power it did not turn on but I did get 10 blinking yellow lights by the battery.

Can you test the power adapter with a voltmeter?
It’s possible the battery LED is blinking because the battery is completely discharged and cannot start the laptop.
You cannot tell what is wrong without testing the adapter first.
Could be bad adapter, broken power jack or motherboard problem.

  138. I read on a toshiba laptop repair site that the port the power cord goes in to charge the battery sometimes becomes worn or loose on the mmotherboard and should be resoldered. This will allow the port to supply a better charge to the battery, thus, fixing many problems you all are discussing. I have not tried it yet on my P35 but will give it a shot tonight. I will keep you posted.

I removed my battery from my Toshiba Satellite A-105 while the computer was on and it was plugged into the AC outlet (so the power didn’t go off). When I put the battery in again, it no longer charges. My computer registers that the battery is there and the battery charging light is amber, but the battery charge has stayed at 0%. I tried downloading BIOS and that didn’t help. Anyone have any ideas?

Hello. I am Colombian. I had the same problem. I search 15 days for the solution. And it occurred to me an idea. What I did was remove the battery and turn ON the laptop with the AC adapter. When Windows start I connect the battery …. and surprisingly the battery start to load. I left it at 100% load. today was 5 days and everything works fine …. Ah, I also upgraded the BIOS. I downloaded the BIOS on Toshiba webpage.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105 S2236 laptop and the other day I took it to a repair store to get some work done. I brought it home yesterday and it turned on, but nothing showed up, so I had a friend take a look. He found that a black colored wire in the base of the computer underneath the keyboard was dislodged and was unable to put it back. is there an easy way to correct this so I don’t have to shell out more money for repairs?

I have a Toshiba laptop and I’m using window vista ultimate on it.I try to use the Toshiba back up disk and it didn’t work, so i use a window ultimate instead. It works properly for a couple of months. Right? I got a problem with my charger, my charger was cut from the site that is connected to the laptop charging jack. I open up the wires and then I reconnect it myself. Its works for a while until recently. Now, my laptop battery is dead and i can’t charge my laptop, when i plug in the charging cord, the charge plug in light is not on or anything. Any one out there can help me out??????????????

    Thank you

My laptop is Toshiba Satellite R10. One day, I got a message that the battery was low and I might shut down. After that, my battery didn’t work. I can’t turn on with battery. But I can turn on and off with power cable. So please tell me how to check the battery problem or adapter problem. Mine is Adapter or battery problem?

    Thanks!

Remove the battery and start the laptop from the AC adapter. If it works fine when the battery is removed, most likely this is a battery related problem.
There is a chance of motherboard failure, but most likely it’s just the battery.

  145. I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 laptop. I’ve been having problems where I have the battery fully charged in the laptop and I try to turn on the laptop with the power cord plugged in, but it doesn’t recognize the battery as being there and it won’t turn on. After I remove the battery and place it back into the laptop, it turns on but tells me the battery is ~70% charged, even though it was fully charged when it was turned off and not used. Even with the power cord plugged in, it still doesn’t recognize the battery that’s in there and won’t turn on.

Is this likely a battery problem? Thanks!

There is no easy answer to your question. That could be just a bad battery (most likely) or there is a problem with the battery charging circuit on the motherboard (less likely). The only way to find out is replacing the battery with another known good battery.

im running a toshiba satellite A215-S7444 and im having the same problem my battery pack wont charge, i have the have the AC plugged in to turn on and run my pc, down in the left corner the battery icon displays empty and when i hover my mouse over it says (plugged in, not charging), i tried updating the bios, i went to the toshiba site and downloaded and installed the bios for the computer and restared but it did not help… any suggestions?

  150. Ok,so how do I change the BIOS if I can’t get the machine charged long enough to turn it on?????

  151. Gideon

Like some others above, I have a similar problem with Sat. A215. First, my old and dying battery would respond and then immediately not respond to the AC adapter. In other words, all the power and charge LED would go blue, battery orange (charging) for two or three seconds, then the power LED would mysteriously flash pink. In fact, what it seemed like was that it was underlyingly blue but then flashing orange on top of the blue, creating the illusion of flashing pink.

All that was with a 2 year old battery. So not unexpected for something to be weird. Now I’ve replaced it with a nearly-new Toshiba-brand battery and the problem, while it didn’t start immediately, has come back over the last month I’ve had the new battery.

    Several observations:
    1. It used to be that the battery would recharge best when the computer was closed and in “sleep”. Then, the flashing would never occur, the battery LED would be orange until it charged and went blue. More recently, though, the flashing pink has occurred even when the computer was in sleep.

    2. Now I find that the best charge happens when the computer is in “Hibernate”, though sometimes this fails as well, but it fails differently. Whereas in other settings (power on or sleep) the power LED flashes pink when the problem is going on, in Hibernate, the battery LED flashes orange if it’s not properly charging. (The way I can tell that it isn’t charging is that when I’ve observed the LED to be flashing orange, even after several hours of being plugged in the meter doesn’t read 100% when I revive the computer. If the flashing hasn’t occurred, by that time the battery LED will be blue and the meter will read 100% when I revive the computer.)

    3. The problem with the charger seems to happen much much less when the battery is at 100%. That means thta my best strategy is to hibernate the computer if I’ve been using it off battery power, then plug it in so it charges (including unplugging and replugging if the battery LED flashes orange) until the battery is back to 100%, and then using it off the AC after that. Even then, sometimes it doesn’t register the adapter and the pink flashing happens again, but maybe half the time when the battery is full it does register the adapter.

    4. I’m about to go home and play with the BIOS (based on purchase date, mine is probably 1.20 or 1.40 instead of 2.00) but I’m not happy to see that a lot of people here haven’t found it to solve their problems. Dad says it’s a reasonable explanation but if other people didn’t find it to work out, then I’ll just have to hope to be lucky.

    5. If you have any direct comments or suggestions about my issue, can you please send along a copy of what you post here to klionsky AT brandeis DOT edu ? Thank you.

    6. Has anyone ever written Toshiba about this problem?

  152. Hi,
one more in line with charging problems. I am using a Satellite A200-1CC. Laptop works on a/c only when no battery is installed. If battery is installed there is a 3 second yellowcharging light and that’s it. Battery does not charge at all. I have already bought a new battery-pack. Same problem. That wasn’t it.

New a/c adapter or new mainboard??? Or what else.

    Any idea?

  153. Just a quickie for everyone with battery problems.
    I own a 2005 Toshiba Equium L20 & a satellite L20,(same models different name)
both battery’s ran out & new one’s purchased along with new chargers, they won’t charge at all, the orange coloured LED flashes constantly,I have had conversations with laptop techies
who are certain it is a hardware problem, apparently a chip or resistor to control the power on the motherboard becomes faulty.

    I had a quote of £100 + V.A.T for a “second hand motherboard”
I’m not going to waste my money on repairing a laptop that is only now worth £150.
I’m still looking for the part number so I can replace
it, if anyone has a manual for this / these models please post it

Is it just reporting the battery charge level incorrectly or the laptop shuts down when the AC adapter is unplugged? Will it work from the battery as normal, if you unplug the adapter?

  158. Listen 2 bOB mARLEY

The capacitor needs to be discharged.
    Remove the battery.
    Unplug the power supply.
Hold down the power button for 15 seconds.
Yes, without the battery and unplugged.
    This will discharge the capacitor.

Next, plug in the power supply and turn the laptop on with battery still removed.
If it doesn’t power on with the battery out, then your power supply is bad.
    Do a proper shut down.

Now insert the battery and let charge for a few hours.
If you can’t wait a few hours, sure turn it on.
It should now say plugged in, charging.

    good luck

  159. Hi,

I have a Toshiba Toshiba A200, purchased in Aust. just out of warranty, which is used now in Thailand. This problem has only just developed over the past week.

Intermittent charging and power drops out
Power intermittently drops out – from AC to battery.
Computer powers up OK on battery and AC
Note: Performed capacitor discharge as below. Laptop appears to want to power up on AC only (ie when battery removed) but drops out (unsure whether reason due to power being interrupted through possible faulty AC adaptor)
Battery charges when power supply indicates it is connected to Laptop.
Battery life has always been poor.
Laptop appears to charge OK when off, now intermittent. Last night it charged to 100% whilst off, and I got about 45 mins, now flat.
Removing Laptop connector and replugging it to laptop doesn’t reset power connection.
Laptop connector appears ok – ie. No loose connection
When AC lead removed from power adaptor and reconnected power resumes to Laptop. However this will drop after a period of time, sometimes immendiately sometimes 5-10 mins. It seems once it heats up power supply time is shorter. My gut instinct is telling me faulty AC power adaptor?? Any thoughts?

    In appreciation Jim

i have a toshiba satellite a105, and the problem is that everytime the battery is totally drained, the laptop wont open anymore..and i don’t think that the problem is due to the ac power cord. it wont open even if i remove the battery and plug the cord.. this incident have already been so irritating..i have lots of files on it and i want it to be retrieved as soon as possible.. Usually, when this happens, the laptop won’t open for several days or weeks maybe…but i do some occasional checking hoping that the thing will open again..and yes…the thing still works…but im always avoiding the battery to be drained…what could be the probable damage in my laptop? pls help.. i need my files… and its urgent..

I know that Toshiba issues some battery problem related fixes with the latest BIOS update. Wait until the laptop start booting again and try updating the BIOS to the latest version.
Just in case, make sure to back up all files before you run the BIOS update. Run the laptop on the AC power when updating the BIOS.

  162. i have a problem with my laptop. when i charge the light doesn’t come. please what should i do. i can’t boot the machine because am having battery low.

  163. Hi!
First=> I want to say you are a REALLY Great person to help all of us!! Thank you!

Second=> I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 (Vista 32 bits), and I had the same problem as everyone else so I bought a new battery, and now the problem is that my computer won’t charge it.
Before I had the new battery I would just remove the old one because my computer wouldn’t start, so I would plug it with the ac power cord and it would work just fine.
Now I can’t put the battery in without draining it down(even if it’s plug up),
so the big question is: Can it be repaired? if so how much could it cost me, approximately? because I’m broke just by buying this new battery … I hope the issue it’s not the motherboard, i hope it something with the connectivity or the wire

and they’re not third, but I want to thank you in advance!!!
    Have a great day! 🙂

  164. I have a Toshiba A105-S4094. My battery is permanently stuck at 33%-50% charged. My battery dosen’t charged full (100%. When I charge the light does come but if charges sie to 30% the light doesn’t com. have you got any ideas what may be happen with my laptop.

  165. We have a Toshiba satellite m55-s325. It just shut down on it’s own, it would turn in for about 1 min then shut down again. Also no battery was detected even though there was a battery in it. Now the blue plug indicatar blinks when we plug in the AC adaptar.

  166. I have a Toshiba Satellite A215. My battery is completely drained now, but the last time it worked I remember plugging it in and noticing that it was not charging. After the battery was drained, I plugged in the power cord again and nothing happened (usually the battery lights up). Occasionally my dog has tripped on the cord and pulled it out of the A/C adapter socket on the laptop. Could this have disconnected something? Is there anything I can do to repair this, or is this a repair shop job? If so, what sort of expense should I expect?

    Thanks for your help!!

  168. Amanda,

I have a Toshiba Satellite A215. My battery is completely drained now, but the last time it worked I remember plugging it in and noticing that it was not charging. After the battery was drained, I plugged in the power cord again and nothing happened (usually the battery lights up).

Probably bad AC adapter. The adapter died while you were using the laptop and the laptop works until the battery had charge. Now the laptop will not turn on because it’s not getting any power from the adapter and the battery is drained.
Test the AC power adapter with a voltmeter, if you can.
Try replacing the AC adapter with a new one.

Occasionally my dog has tripped on the cord and pulled it out of the A/C adapter socket on the laptop. Could this have disconnected something?

It’s possible the dog damaged the adapter cord.

Is there anything I can do to repair this, or is this a repair shop job?

You can try replacing the AC adapter yourself. If it doesn’t fix the problem, you’ll have to take the laptop to the repair shop.

  174. Hi Chris,

Thank you for your reply. The answer was in the ta7i0v600 readme.txt. I thought I would like to share with everyone.

    1. The BIOS title “ACPI Flash BIOS version 6.00 for Tecra A7 (Intel) (PTA70U) is miss leading. After extracted I opened the readme.txt contains a list of models that this BIOS supports.

    2. In the Caution! Section, Here is the copy of the mystery of how I solve my problem: “On some models, it is not unusual to see a CMOS checksum error when you first reboot the computer after installing the new BIOS. If you see this message on your screen, press F1 as instructed. This displays the “TSETUP” screen. Press to save the CMOS data. You won’t see the CMOS checksum error again.

    3. If step 2 still not working for you. After you flash the BIOS, turn off the power to the computer. Holding down the tilde (~) key on your keyboard and turn on the power. This will boot up to drive A. [This still is mystery to me, I do not have drive A.] Than do step 2.

Luckly, my motherboard is fine, my CMOS battery is fine too. -Seaberry

First it didnt install completely saying there was a fatal error …… and gave a particular code aand since then my battery hadnt charged above 69% but when i unplug the AC cble it uses the battery power. tried unistalling it but it wouldnt go. I dont know what to do?

  179. okiemute,

    I think it’s just a coincidence.

First it didnt install completely saying there was a fatal error …… and gave a particular code aand since then my battery hadnt charged above 69% but when i unplug the AC cble it uses the battery power

Try discharging the battery completely and then charge it again.

It’s hard to tell what is causing the problem. Could be just the battery failure or there is a problem with the battery charging circuit on the motherboard.
    1. Try replacing the battery.
    2. If no help, you’ll have to replace the motherboard or use it as is.

It’s either bad battery (replace battery) or there is a problem with the battery charging circuit on the motherboard (replace motherboard).
You cannot tell which one is causing the problem without testing the laptop with another known good battery.
If the problem is still there even after replacing the battery, it must be the motherboard problem.

I have the same problem with my battery not charging with my Toshiba Satellite A100. I updated the BIOS but it still doesn’t recharge. My laptop will work fine when plugged in but I only have 8 minutes of battery life. I contacted Toshiba and my battery does not qualify for the recall. Thats’ bullshit in my opinion. And no I will not spend $ 150.00 on a new battery. Any help would be helpful. When I search online for an answer I get the stupid ” Update your bios ” Wake up people it doesn’t work in all cases. Would appreciate more insight into this problem as I am positive that I am not the only person on this planet that is having this problem. Sounds like the computer industry makes these things fail on purpose so that you go and buy a new one. Well, if I ever have to do that I certainly will not purchase another Toshiba. Cheers

  190. Purchasing a Toshiba was probably one of the worst and costly mistakes I have made. 2 months into the purchase, my speakers blew out. I have resorted to using headphones every time I need to listen to something. Just last night, my batteries died. I’ve tried taking the batteries out, changing to different outlets, etc, etc, etc. Now it’s just sitting in a corner. It’s been less than a year, and already it’s a broken down piece of trash. Please, save yourself the pain and buy anything else but a Toshiba. I know I won’t ever make that mistake ever again.

  191. Ward Thomas

  192. Ward Thomas,

My Satellite A105-S4324 will not hold a charge after bios updates either.

    Maybe it’s just bad battery?

  193. Carrie,

Now it’s just sitting in a corner. It’s been less than a year, and already it’s a broken down piece of trash

If it’s been less than a year, probably your laptop is still covered by Toshiba warranty.
    Have you tried contacting them?

  194. John Hinkley,

I have the same problem with my battery not charging with my Toshiba Satellite A100. I updated the BIOS but it still doesn’t recharge. My laptop will work fine when plugged in but I only have 8 minutes of battery life.

Sounds like a bad battery. If the battery works but last only for 8 minutes, it must be bad battery. There is not much you can do besides replacing the battery.

And no I will not spend $ 150.00 on a new battery.

I think you can find a generic battery way cheaper.

  195. PAUL CRAIGEN

Problem as for many with barrery not charging on my old Toshiba Satellite 1100. Followed advice as above and downloaded later BIOS which has to go to a floppy disc and is then loaded when the machine is rebooted from the floppy. Detailed analysis appears during reboot then suddenly, before the end, the screen goes completely blank. Switching off again and trying to reboot with or without the floppy will not now work and I only get a blank screen. Reattempts seem to generate slight hard-disc activity but then all stops. My Toshiba Satellite L-300 Labptop when
fully Charged if still pluged in, keyboard keys are working abnormally if i press a char it is displaying ascii code. When Unplugged, keyboard is working.

This is a weird problem, never seen it before.
How it works in Safe Mode when plugged in?
Could be some kind of software related problem. What if you delete keyboard from the device manager and reboot the laptop so it can detect and install the keyboard again. Does it work?

Is it a Satellite A105 laptop running Vista OS on 512MB RAM? 🙂
Here are some basic troubleshooting steps.
    1. Find out how much RAM you have installed. If it’s 512MB, upgrade RAM to 2GB and you’ll see a huge improvement in the laptop performance.
    2. If you have enough RAM installed already, test your hard drive. This could be hard drive failure.
    3. If hard drive pass test, backup personal data and reinstall OS from scratch.
    4. If battery still not reported properly even after reinstalling OS, probably it’s time to replace the battery.

Hello everybody.. I have an A205-S4587 Laptop. I notice when I use the battery, it’s working perfectly. but when I tried to use the power (adaptor), it hangs.. so what I do is to use tha battery until it runs out of charge. then i turnoff the laptop and use the adapter to recharge the battery (while the laptop is off). then after charging it maybe for two hours, i will use it again using the battery. can somebody explain what is happening to my laptop? thanks in advance.. or is there any solution? is it the motherboard problem?

If new battery and charger didn’t fix the problem, most likely there is something wrong with the laptop motherboard.

Sounds like bad battery. I think you’ll have to replace the battery with a new one.

I’ve had my battery plugged in for 2 days, the light comes on that says it’s charging but the charge stays at 0%. I have 2 of the same laptops, one that has a working battery. When I switched the battery the working on continued to work on the other computer, and the bad one staied at 0%, is there a way to fix it? Or do I have to get a new battery?

  211. Valerie

I have a Toshiba P15-s409. Yes I’ve had it for a long time. And it’s been working perfectly until a couple weeks ago. I tried to defrag and it said not enough power. I checked and it had been running on battery and was now at 8%. I bought a new power cord thinking that had died. That wasn’t the problem. I have 2 good powercords now. But the battery still won’t charge and it still stays on battery power. When it’s plugged in, it doesn’t run on AC power. Any ideas? I know it’s old, but it really was working great until now. Could it be that I need a new battery? It doesn’t run at all when the battery is out and the computer is plugged in to AC. I can’t get it to run on AC at all. Hoping someone can shed some light on this for me. I’ve had 2 computer guys look at it and they can’t figure the problem out. Thank you!!

If same battery not charging in two different laptops, most likely the battery is bad and has to be replaced.

  217. How do I find out what version the BIOS on my Toshiba Satellite L675 IS?

  218. cj2600

    @P,

How do I find out what version the BIOS on my Toshiba Satellite L675 IS?

Enter the laptop BIOS setup menu. The BIOS version should be mentioned in there.
In order to enter the BIOS setup menu push F2 key as soon as Toshiba logo appears on the screen. If it doesn’t work, try Esc or F1.

  221. Hi Guys,

I´m having a strange issue with my Toshiba Satellite L300.
about a month ago after a windows update my computer froze and i had to reset, when it started back up the CPU was maxing out most of the time and Nortons antivirus was saying it couldn´t do anything as it is missing a file, this was fine but it got worse.

Soon after the computer would randomly be off when i went to use it in the morning, a week or so later it would start randomly restarting when i tried to start it. I did a defrag, check disk, virus, malware and spyware check all showed no problems at the issue got worse. it then started to reset while i was using it.

Today i thought i would try a Toshiba system recovery but i was on battery when i started this and part way through i had to plug it into the mains, straight away the laptop turned off then started back up, windows was not able to boot because “the installation was interupted” and my recovery partiton is gone also.

I have tried plugging the mains in without battery and the problem continues. Also i had tried different ram before i started the restore with no luck.

    Any thoughts?

also i am not in the country i brought the laptop from and i dont speak the native language of this country.

Probably this is motherboard failure. I don’t think this laptop worth replacing the motherboard.

    @ ssempala michael,

I HAVE A TOSHIBA EUROPE GMBH WHEN I PLUG A CHARGER INTO AC OUTLET IT POWERS OF AND RESTARTS AGAIN WHEN IT OPENS THE WINDOWS WILL BE FUNNY COLOURS.

I would test the laptop with an external monitor. If the same problem appears on the external screen this could be motherboard related failure.
