Today I got Toshiba Satellite A105-S2712 for repair with the battery charging problem. It is a new model and we do not have a lot of experience with these laptops. The customer complained that the laptop will not charge the battery when it is plugged into the AC outlet.
The laptop failure symptoms:
The laptop will not turn on when I try to start it from the battery. When the laptop is turned off and plugged into the AC outlet the battery charge LED doesn’t light up. I know that the battery is not charged and the LED should light up when I plug the laptop into the AC outlet. The laptop starts fine when it is plugged. When I move the mouse over the Toshiba Power Icon in the lower right corner, the balloon will pop up and there is a line in there: Battery Remaining: N/A.
The problem repair procedure:
You can easily fix the problem just by updating the BIOS. Toshiba says that the BIOS version should be at least v1.30. So, go to Toshiba website and click on Downloads. Select your laptop model and find any downloads for the BIOS. In the BIOS change history you will see the description of changes.
After I updated the BIOS, the battery charging problem disappeared.

Help! I also have the charging problem with a L25 S1194, it is not charging the battery. I flashed the BIOS, new battery, new and correct power supply. What now? The charging light is solid amber, on and off. I’ve done everything suggested above to no avail. Now What???

Your power button may be dead like mine. See if you
can press the Web or Express media player right
below it. I use the Web button to power up.

Alex,
You cannot download the recovery disk image from Toshiba website, but I think you can purchase it if you call Toshiba support line. It shouldn’t be very expensive. Last time one of my customers purchased a recovery DVD for under $40.

Ann,
It’s not enough to troubleshoot the laptop. What do you mean by “I can’t restart it”? It’s dead, not booting to Windows or what?
Check if the AC adapter works fine. It’s possible that the adapter has died and the laptop worked until the battery had some power. Now you cannot turn it on because there is no power left. It’s just a guess.

Eric,
With ERD Commander Locksmith utility you can remove a user password, not the BIOS password. Can you boot from ERD disk again? If the laptop is still bootable, you can use a recovery DVD and re-image the drive back to factory defaults. From the description you provided I cannot say if it’s a hardware or software failure.

I used the ERD commander, and not boot at all, and I got completily blank screen

Hey Eric,
How did you remove the BIOS password, through the BIOS setup? And what do you mean by “the laptop is completely blocked”? It will not boot at all or you are getting some kind of error on startup?
