Today I got Toshiba Satellite A105-S2712 for repair with the battery charging problem. It is a new model and we do not have a lot of experience with these laptops. The customer complained that the laptop will not charge the battery when it is plugged into the AC outlet.

The laptop failure symptoms:

The laptop will not turn on when I try to start it from the battery. When the laptop is turned off and plugged into the AC outlet the battery charge LED doesn’t light up. I know that the battery is not charged and the LED should light up when I plug the laptop into the AC outlet. The laptop starts fine when it is plugged. When I move the mouse over the Toshiba Power Icon in the lower right corner, the balloon will pop up and there is a line in there: Battery Remaining: N/A.

The problem repair procedure:

You can easily fix the problem just by updating the BIOS. Toshiba says that the BIOS version should be at least v1.30. So, go to Toshiba website and click on Downloads. Select your laptop model and find any downloads for the BIOS. In the BIOS change history you will see the description of changes.

After I updated the BIOS, the battery charging problem disappeared.

    herbert,
Unfortunately, at this point I cannot tell you if this is a problem with the battery itself or you have a failed battery charging circuit on the motherboard. You’ll have to guess. In this model the battery plugs directly into the motherboard, so it’s either the battery fault or the motherboard fault. To find out, you’ll have to test the laptop with a known good battery.
You can try this. Not sure if it’s going to work, but you have nothing to loose. Remove the battery from the laptop for a week or two. When the battery is not plugged, it should loose some charge overtime. Test the battery after that.
If it doesn’t help, I would try replacing the battery with a new one.

    herbert,
Can you start the laptop from AC power and when it boots into Windows unplug the AC power an run from the battery? Will it run on the battery power or it shuts down as soon as you unplug the AC adapter?

    Kelli,

I removed the battery and started the system only running on AC power and it lasted a little longer

It sounds like your laptop shuts down even when it runs on AC power without the battery installed. Is it correct or I’m missing something?

Please help. My satellite 105 S2051 is perfectly fine then suddenly the battery stops working. I cant turn it on using the battery but will work fine when on ac power. The battery indicator always say 100% battery remaining. I downloaded the bios upgrade but the battery is still not working. I remove the battery and put it back again but nothing happens. It still wont turn on and needs to be plugged in ac power. When I tried removing the battery and use only the ac power its perfectly fine. what do you think is the problem? the battery or the laptop?

I have a Satellite A105-S2061, it’s a little over a year old and recently I noticed that I wasn’t getting any battery power. The laptop would load and everything. but it had to be on AC power. I can’t even unplug it for a few seconds to change outlets without the computer shutting off. Lately though I can get the laptop to boot up and it will even load for a few minutes but then it will shut down. I downloaded the BIOS and it actually started shutting off sooner. I removed the battery and started the system only running on AC power and it lasted a little longer, but when I put the battery back on it went back to its old ways. I’ve had a lot of problems out of this computer and as such I would hate to buy a new battery only to find out that it’s a problem with the laptop. If anyone has only suggestions I’d be grateful.

    Robert,

but the battery icon which shows the battery charge level isn’t there anymore

    1. I think you can enable this icon on the taskbar in Power Option Properties, you’ll find this utility in Control Panel.
    2. If you are using Toshiba Power Management utility, try enabling the taskbar icon in there.

Just so everyone with charging problems knows. My problem was that it couldn’t withstand charging and powering on at the same time. The orange charging led turns off when starting computer and forces computer to run off battery. Downloaded a power saving program called NHC. Changed all setting to use intel’s speed switching tech., and to run CPU at half speed, to conserve battery power. In 1/2 speed cpu mode, it rarely ever cuts battery charging when starting. Hope this helps someone.
