Hey man. Thanks for this great tutorial, it helped alot.
Now i have a HP Probook 4515s for a week or so, and in the left of the screen I get a purplish semi-transparent line, wide about 5-10 pixels. If I close the screen and then open it again, it appears after 30 minutes or so.

Do you have any idea what could it be? My notebook hasn't been hit or physically damaged as far as I know.

Thanks !

Nina G-J,

I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC and i had some problems with it a few months back. the problem was the graphics card and this was replaced. i switched it on a few days ago and now there are thin vertical white lines covering the whole of the whold of the screen at (close) equal distances. some help on the matter would be great!! (ps, i hope this paragraph makes sence as i can hardly read what im typing haha)

This sounds like video card failure. Can you test your laptop with an external monitor? Will you get same lines (or garbled image) on the external monitor?
If you, your video card failed again.

Rose,

I have been having screen problems for abobut 4 months. First it started with a thin vertical white line. Then horizontal waviness appeared. Just recently, the screen blinks intermitently for a couple minutes. The white line is constant but the other problems occur ocassionally. Do I need a new LCD or invertor?

I don't think this is inverter related problem. Sounds more like LCD failure.
Test your laptop with video on the external monitor. Can you see "horizontal waviness" on the external video or it works properly?

If external video is fine, most likely you'll have to replace the LCD screen.

Solution to Example 2 and 7 (it might help to some more). Open the bezel and remove the screen of the hinges. Remove the antistatic tape off the screen. You will see (usually, depending on the model) 8 connectors - 5 on the top of the screen (those controlling the vertical lines) and 3 on the side (those for the horizontal lines). Vertical and horizontal lines appear due to bad connections in these 8 wide cables. Now play with the corresponding cable (if you have a vertical line in the center - try the upper central connector or its neighbors). You should get to a moment when the line disappears. Use scotch tape to tape it to the screen in the position when the line disappears. There you go - screen fixed!

scott,

thank you for ur advice on fixing my laptop which had the same problem as yours did, all i did was apply some pressure with my thumb to the screen of my laptop and the fuzzy lines went away

Do not celebrate yet. These lines may come back later, hopefully not.
