David H,
What happens if you start the laptop from the battery when the AC adapter is unplugged? Will if freeze too or it happens only when you unplug the adapter while the laptop is running?
Try booting the laptop in Safe mode? Will it happen is Safe mode too?

Brian,
It’s possible that the audio jack got stuck in the “head phones” position, there is a switch inside the jack.
Check out this article and try that first.
Speakers stopped working after I used my headphones

Hi I have an IBM Thinkpad R50e running on OEM batteries. Recently, when I switch from AC to battery power (unplug the cord with computer running), after a few minutes, the computer freezes and I need to reboot to get it started. Computer also appears to be running slower
Could this be due to installation of Microscoft Windows Updates or issues with the OEM (non original battery). The computer ran fine with these batteries for over a year.
When running on AC power, I do not have any freezing problems.

Cristian Ene,
I don’t remember this model off the top of my head, but…
I believe the battery charge LED is located on the inverter board, check out the following post and you’ll find some pictures.
Screen inverter replacement. Fixing laptop backlight problem.
If the laptop is working fine except the battery charge LED, maybe there is something wrong with the inverter? Just a guess.

Hello,
I have the following problem with my T43 IBM laptop, model 1871 f1g:
When it’s not plugged in, it shows that it is, and it’s charging.
When it’s turned off, the light is on (as if it’s charging), and the back of the laptop emits a squeaking sound but light, must be very quiet to hear.
The problem with this is not bothering me so much, but, if i forget to plug it in, or i’m working without ac, it won’t stand by or ,… warn me … just dies, on a empty battery,… quite annoying when your working for 2 hours for a document
If you have any suggestions, feel free to point them out.
Thank you

Bryan,
First of all, make sure your problem is related to the video chip. Try booting your laptop with an external monitor. If the external monitor works fine and the problem appear only on the laptop screen, it’s possible you have bad LCD screen or video cable.
If both screens, the internal LCD and external monitor have garbled video, it’s a problem with the video card. Most likely the video chip is integrated into the motherboard (it’s not on a discrete card) and you cannot replace it. You’ll have to replace the whole motherboard.

Mishera,
Most likely it’s either bad memory or bad motherboard. Ask your technician to install a known good memory module first. Make sure he tries both memory slots. If it doesn’t help, apparently it’s bad motherboard.
I doubt that your problem is related to the fan or CPU. I don’t think that the laptop would give you any error message (beeping sound) with a bad CPU.

Laptop IBM T41: switch on the power button, beeping sound and no display at all. I tried to take it to technicians and to every ones shock, there was a hard kind of box cut paper put on above the processor fan. the technician recommended a new fan because to him that the old one could not hold the processor tightly. we failed to find a new one. so its disabled. any ideas because i cn’t do anything with my lovely laptop.
