HMM will provide you instructions for troubleshooting, diagnostics, removal and replacement laptop hardware. All IBM HMMs are publicly available. You can find HMM for your laptop on the IBM website or you can follow the link below. All HMMs are in pdf format, so you can download them and use at your convenience. For hardware replacement instructions find “Removing and replacing a FRU” chapter.

MD. Rahad Hossain,
ThinkPads are very secure laptops. If you forgot the BIOS password, I’m afraid you’ll have to replace the motherboard.

Charles Zitnik,
Go to the BIOS setup menu and make sure the hard drive is the first bootable device in the order. If not, make it the first device, save settings and reboot the laptop. Test if it helps.

I have an R32 Laptop that will not boot up normally. IBM screen comes up with F1 and F12 choices, but goes nowhere. If I choose F12 for choosing startup drive, and choose CDROM, the computer will boot just fine to Windows XP, and works fine from that point on. I loaded a new BIOS from Lenovo hoping this would help, but the problem persists. Any ideas?

Bob O’Hara,
All laptop disassembly instructions are in the HMM.
1. Download the maintenance manual for T40.
2. Go to Removing and replacing a FRU on the page 70.

My IBM THINKPAD T40 laptop has a very wobbly DC power jack. I am somewhat electronically savvy and own appropriate ESD equipment such as a desk mat and wrist strap. Recently I bought a replacement DC power jack which is a pretty straight-forward affair: square cube with female screw hole and power cable with Molex-type plug for the inverter. I have downloaded the Feb 2006 IBM Maintenance Manual but, other than it showing the location of the DC jack it provides no guidance as to what procedure I should use for disassembling the laptop. It is specific about most of the internals but the closest reference is the procedure for replacement of the inverter. Can you recommend what specific subsection I need to be using for instructions from the HMM that will enable me to replace the DC power jack? Thanks a million !

SUSHANT,
I’m confused. Does your laptop starts at all? Will it boot to the desktop?
