Today I found a great source with service manuals for Sony Vaio VGN series laptops and notebooks. Links to the service manuals were posted on one of the Russian forums (comment 13). Not sure for how long these service manuals will be available for downloads but they are the time of wringing this post. Some files are large and it might take some time to download them, so be patient.

I was given a used Toshiba M35X-S111, and like to know the steps to put it back to its original setting. (I have the original CDs).
Thanks, David C
January 10th, 2008 at 9:05 am
David Chiu,
1. Insert the recovery disc into the DVD drive and restart the computers.
2. Press F12 as soon as Toshiba logo appears on the screen.
3. Using an arrow key select CD/DVD drive from the boot menu and press Enter. The laptop will start booting from the recovery disc.
4. Select “Load factory defaults” (of something like this, I don’t remember exactly).
5. Wait for 45-60 minutes.

I need to change the wireless card in my VGN-BX194VP. The VGN-BX manual looks really useful, but no mention is made of where the wireless card is located. I’m assuming it’s accessed by removing the keyboard. Can anyone help, please?
Thanks
February 21st, 2008 at 5:47 am
Ken Barton,
Open up the VGN-BX manual and take a look at the page 16, picture 1.
The wireless card is located on the left side from the PCMCIA slot. In order to access the wireless card you’ll have to remove the keyboard and then remove the bracket (page15 – picture 1 and 2).

Want to replace the cmos battery on VGN-640W and don’t know where to look. Manual available above shows disassembly instructions, but the cmos battery location not specified.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
April 22nd, 2008 at 12:02 pm
MajorCat,
I looked at the disassembly guide but didn’t find the CMOS battery either. The pictures are not very clear. Probably it’s located somewhere on the motherboard and it looks like a 10 cent coin.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Any one know how to disassemble a TZ? i got all the screws up but was not sure how to remove the end portion of the top cover where the two drums hold the screen. need to get my hard drive replaced as the drive got bad sectors.
thanks!!
April 28th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
FYI
The CMOS battery on the FS-640/W was located beneath the touchpad. Access was from the bottom, once the DVD drive had been removed and half the motherboard loosed to provide access to the plug/battery, which was attached to mobo with double-stick tape.

I have a sony VGN-FS790 aka PCG-7D1L it doen’t work anymore due to a burnt/blown capacitos(rectangular tan-ish color) The blown capaciton is located below the heatsink I’ve maganed to de-solder it and am looking for a ceramic capacitor to replace it. In the area when it is located there are 2 other capacitors to the left of it, if laptop is on table with battery location downward and cd/dvd burner to the left Numbers below this capacitor are PQ49 thou they do not goto this cap they’re just written right below it.To the left of this capacitor is two more capacitors like it and a black chip with this writing to left of that AF5AL FDS 6680A. What I need and would like some info on is the value of the capacitor so that I can purchase a replacement to solder it on and fix this sony laptop. Has anyone dealt with this type of issue? Does anyone have a service manual with laptop motherboard schematics? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

June 4th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Daniel Richardson,
All you have to do is replace the defective hard drive with a new one. After that boot your laptop for the recovery disc and reimage the hard drive back to factory defaults. Just boot from the recovery dics and follow the wizard on the screen.

japhet m. seguis,
Try using “Last Known Good Configurations” option from the boot menu. You can get to the boot menu if you press F8 on startup.
Also, try booting in Safe Mode. If you can boot to the desktop try using System Restore utility and revert Windows back.

Does anyone know the part number for the Escutcheon (L) part for the sony vaio vgn-sz340P. It’s a silver part that’s on the left side of the laptop. The slot where the memory stick goes has a crack in it. I’m really having a hard time knowing if the parts that I’ve found are ther right one because I don’t have the part number.

I have a Sony VAIO VGNFS-790 that is having problems.
The “power” light is on, but the screen isnt. It doesnt even boot up or make noises, like it is completely dead.
When I unplug the charger, the “battery on” light turns on, and the “power” light stays on too. However, when I plug the charger into the computer to charge it, the “charging” light doesnt come on, or blink like it should, but the light on the charger box is green, meaning it is working fine.
PLEASE HELP! Any info would help. Thanks!
September 27th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Valerie,
Could be bad memory. If you have two memory sticks installed, you can remove them one by one and test the laptop with each stick separately.
If the laptop works fine with one module and will not boot with the second one, the last module is bad and has to be replaced.

Hello. I have a Sony VGN-A190 that is having problems with the power supply input port where the power plugs into the back of the computer. It is slightly loose and will not stay connected unless I have my hand on it and watch the battery-charge widget to make sure it is connecting and charging the battery. Can someone point me to a service manula for that 17 inch laptop? I would also like to upgrade the HDD and the internal RAM chip. Please help. Thanks, and all the best to you!

I am struggling. My boss, an eye doctor, just bought a Sony Vaio Z and wants me to get some of the programs that we use on all the other computers in the office installed to his laptop… well, I am unable to get these installed. I had a friend who is a computer wiz take a look and he couldn’t figure it out… are we missing something? For the amount this laptop cost we should be able to install a couple programs that we use daily in the office…
Thanks to anyone with ideas!
December 4th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Sheena,
Most likely his new Sony Vaio Z is running Vista OS. Right? It’s possible that your office software is compatible with Windows XP but not Vista.

I have a sony vaio laptop (model no : VGN-CR11GH). I purchased this laptop last year from India. Three days ago it stopped working completely and It is not getting started. There are no LED displays. I tried holding the power button for 30 seconds and then releasing it, also removing the battery and then connecting it, but they was of no use. I also checked the ac adapter and it is working fine (the adapter has a led display which is glowing when i connect it to the power supply). Can anyone tell me what could be the problem.
Thanks.

Hi,
I need a service manual for a GRX-316 (or comparable model like GRX-416). Unfortunately it seems as the bad solder joints on the RAM-socket finally gave in. Additionally the HDD’s death is imminent. So I’m thinking of either disassembling and using the LCD and maybe other parts or getting the RAM-socket fixed. Any hints on successful projects using such an LCD as standalone screen attached to either VGA or DVI?
Thanks!

My daughter’s Sony VGN-CR120 right hinge broke. I got the part and got the screen out. From what I found on the internet, it looks like I have to pry up the top plastic around the keyboard. Thats where I’m hesitating. I found a service manual for a VGN-C but the top plastic is a little different than this one.
Do you know if I really just pry the plastic top off carefully so I can get to the hinge screws?
Thanks in advance.

i have a sony vaio vgn-nr32L laptop that came with windows vista preinstalled. Now I want to change that to windows xp and i have tried several time but to no avail. It seems that the xp setup simply can’t recognise the hard drive. what do i do to get xp on my laptop?
April 17th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
michael aidoo,
What do you mean the XP setup can’t recognize the hard drive? Does it give you an error message?
By the way, some laptop that come with Vista do not support XP. Before you jump in and reformat the hard drive, visit the Sony website and find out if they have device drivers for Windows XP.
April 21st, 2009 at 2:16 pm
to the guy with the sony laptop with vista the reason why xp dosent regognise the hard drive is because the motherboard has no sata support in the bios as with all sony vaio’s have had this problem many times you need to find the correct raid driver for that motherboard install it on to a floppy and press f6 when prompted to install external raid drivers if the raid drivers are the correct ones xp will then see the hard drive and install xp. However you might not be able to find xp drivers for the motherboard devices ie. sound graphics etc…
April 26th, 2009 at 9:33 am
My Sony Vaio is VGN-SZ18GP. One day my keyboard suddenly responded strangely. Some keys do not response. Some keys respond as other keys. For example, pressing a key like “j” (can’t remember exactly which letter, just take j as an example) will be responded as pressing “Delete”. Horrified, I reboot the computer. A lot of noises (beep-beep-beep) during the start up process. But the computer can start. But the keyboard problem persist. Please help.
April 27th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Eric,
This beep-beep-beep sounds like a stuck key on the keyboard.
I think it’s either bad keyboard or failed keyboard controller on the motherboard. Try replacing the keyboard first and if you still experience the same problem, apparently there is a problem with the keyboard controller. If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the motherboard.

Thank you so much for posting those links, my FE21s has something wrong with its Wifi switch (so no bluetooth or wifi unless i keep my finger pressed against the switch)!
Apparently it costs GBP 230 to open it up and replace the switch… these greedy bastards, i’ll never buy Sony products in my life. Anyway thanks for the service manual.

May 20th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
“my FE21s has something wrong with its Wifi switch (so no bluetooth or wifi unless i keep my finger pressed against the switch)!”
In most cases, this is simply a matter of applying contact cleaner to the internal wireless switch. On rare occasions the motherboard will need to be replaced.

Efreen,
I think you are lucky. I just created a step-by-step hard drive replacement instructions in Sony Vaio TZ series laptops. Should work for your Vaio TZ240nb I guess. Proceed on your own risk.

Can I replace the IDE hard disk that came with the Sony FS790 with an SSD drive like the Intel X25M 80GB Solid State drive? Do they use the same hardware connectors and interface?
July 11th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Thanx for the Sony repair manual links – sure appriciate it. The Sony’s are suipposed to be somewhat tricky to change even a HD or memory from what i understand – these will help.
Now if you run into a set of links for the exploded views with part numbers for ordering… that would complete what i need to fix my VGN-SZ460n.
I tried Sony , and though they’ll lopok up a part number via land line discription part by part – that risks a wrong part being sent…
They wouldn’t send the exploded views for reference of part numbers.
go figure…? lol
thanx again forthe PDF’s above

I have a Toshiba centrino laptop, it had been serving me 2 for years but now it has a problem with its LCD screen. The screen often goes off and becomes very dark, there isn’t any lighting on the screen, but when I look close to the screen, I can see the GUI display as it is normally working. Sometimes the screen goes off when playing film or music but the film or music sound is still playing, and I still can see the statement of the film still moving on in a very dim image. I am sure that my laptop is normally working except the backlight. When this problem happens, I close the lid and my laptop goes to standby mode, after that I open the lid and the screen it lit again, Sometimes I have to close and open several times to get it lit back. One thing very special, If I open the lid lower or equal 90 degree, It just flash in milisecond and then turns dark. If I open it more than 90degree, It works fine. But it’s not convenient to work with a laptop like tis. I don’t know what wrong with it. Anyone has good ideas? Please help me!
July 31st, 2009 at 8:08 pm
above is my problem before i posted to another forum but no solution found.
I am sure that when dismantling the laptop, you have accidentally removed the tape sticked on the IB(inverter board). The IB is usually laid inside a transparent cubic plastic tube located under screen. Please take the IB out of the tube and wrap it with transparent sellotape around it as spiral shape from head to end till IB is fully wrapped. then re-insert inside the plastic tube and connect the power connectors at 2 heads. I am sure it will work fine forever, that’s amazing. Don’t think that the tape doesn’t effect to the problem, Yes, it really does. Remember not to remove any sellotape sticked on mainboard.

Thank you for those links! I found this page because I want to repair my VGN-S150. It sometimes fails to pass the BIOS POST. When it fails, I’ll still get the power light, the battery light (when appropriate), and the Wireless light (when turned on), but there’s no LCD activity, and no Vaio sound (that’s the setting I turned to tell me BIOS POST was successful).
I suspect it’s either the ATI chip or one of the other unprotected chips (it’s either the Northbridge or Southbridge, but it sits to the left of the CPU and to the lower right of the ATI chip.
I think putting pressure on one or two chips could restore functionality to the laptop.
Any thoughts?

jeremy,
You can buy a brand new LCD screen for your Sony laptop here for about $70-80.
August 8th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Vincent,
Could be memory related problem. Have you tried removing RAM modules, reseting them, turning on the laptop with only one RAM module installed? Try that first.
If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the motherboard. You cannot resolder/replace these chips at home.
August 9th, 2009 at 2:20 am
Model of my Sony Vaio laptop is VGNFJ1W. Recently there was an spark from the cooling vent area and it followed bit of smoke. After that the cooling fan stopped working. I also realized that there is a thin strip of line on my display. However, still the laptop is working.
I requested a quote from Sony Service and they wanted £213 for the repair. That is beyond my affordability. Could anyone suggest me what might be wrong with the laptop?
August 9th, 2009 at 11:44 am
TS,
It’s possible that the fan problem is not related to the LCD problem and this is just a coincidence.
Is it enough just replace the fan or the whole motherboard has to be replaced? I don’t know. I cannot tell without looking at the laptop. From your description I assume that you have a fried component on the motherboard and replacing the cooling fan will not help.
August 10th, 2009 at 3:14 am
Dear cj2600,
I was also fearing that a component on the mother board is fried. However, when I followed your clues and checked both the motherboard and cooling fan area, I found out something interesting. Actually the smoke was coming from the dust gathered in the cooling fan area and I am still not sure about the sparks.
Anyway, after cleaning the 1 inch thik layer of dust from the vent area everything is back to normal. Even the display is ok.
Thank you very much for uploading the Service manual. It saved both money and time.

thanks for your great help. I had to disassemble a VGN-N130G to pull the hard drive. could not have done it without your manuals. in pulling the keyboard, I knocked loose the right arrow key on the lower left hand corner. Is there a method of reattaching it, or should I find a replacement keyboard?
August 12th, 2009 at 9:33 am
Bradford,
Check out these instructions. A key fell off the laptop keyboard. Fixing the problem.
August 13th, 2009 at 11:50 pm
To cj2600:
Thank you for your reply about my Vaio VGN-S150! I discovered one of my RAM chips was bad, indeed. The laptop didn’t even recognize it – I expected 512MB but got only 256MB. I ran MemTest86+ on the other good chip. I would look over every few minutes to check up on the program’s progress. On one occasion, I noticed the timer had not progressed and the progress bar looked erratic but working. I lifted the laptop with my right hand grasping the right side of the keyboard. The timer had jumped to its correct time and the progress bar displayed as expected. I put the laptop down and the timer froze. The progress bar went wonky again. MemTest86+ did report a good working RAM chip for at least one pass.
I’m starting to believe the ATI chip’s ball grid array is starting to come apart. Lifting the laptop gave its mainboard enough pressure in the right places to reconnect the BGA (ATI) chip. I got this laptop for free because it was no longer reliably working, so I’m very willing to try risky procedures and safer ones that may only provide temporary relief.
I’m thinking of placing a shim to put more pressure on the ATI chip to reconnect that ball grid array. I was thinking of putting rubber padding underneath the mainboard where the ATI chip is located. I was also thinking about taking the fan and heatsink off and putting one or even two thin copper or aluminum squares with thermal grease between the ATI chip and the heatsink. I’m not skilled enough to perform a solder reflow of the ball grid array.
If I totally wreck the motherboard, I can move on and figure out whether the Vaio’s LCD (on the VGN-S150) would fit a Macbook (or maybe even the 13.3-inch Macbook Pro).
I’d love to hear thoughts about the shim idea.
Thanks again for the reply!

Hi, I have a VGN-S150 laptop, but I just forget the BIOS password, and now i have no way to access my laptop. I have tried removed the cmos battery bur it does not help. I’ve heard that SONY stored the password in a security chip and it has to be replaced, but where is it?
Anyone has another way to bypass it? Thanks

Hi, I have a VGN-NR38GN/L laptop. Neither the modem nor the LAN ethernet port seem to be detected by the operating system – Vista Business. BIOS options seem to be extremely limited.
How do I enable the modem or LAN ports?
September 17th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Thx. very much for the manual download
September 20th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
ravi,
Could be software related problem.
Have you tried reinstalling device drivers for the modem and LAN?
If reinstalling drivers doesn’t help, back up all personal data and reinstall Vista from the recovery disc. If still no help, most likely you have a faulty motherboard and it has to be replaced.

Hi,
I have a Vaio VGN-FW140E and I’m looking to replace the screen. I’ve been looking for a service manual or some instruction on how to disassemble the screen with no result. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
October 7th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Kevin,
I posted some instructions for Sony laptop here.
A couple of them explain how to replace the LCD screen. Could be similar to your laptop. Read though my instructions and you’ll get the idea.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Thanks for the quick response. I’ve looked through some of them, but it seems the VGN-FW series is a little different. There are only 2 screws on top and the bottom seems to be attached to the hinge. I tried opening it up but could only get it to open halfway. There must be some hidden screws somewhere that I couldn’t see.
I will go through your guides again to see if I can get any clues.

Cara,
Check out this disassembly guide for a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ220 notebook, could be similar to your notebook.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
Vickie,
It’s like asking an auto mechanic. “My car will not start, what’s wrong?”
I don’t know how your laptop fails and I cannot give you a good advice. Test the power adapter first. Make sure the laptop is getting power from the wall.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
I have the 17 inch VGN-AR770. I am a little pissed off considering this laptop just past it’s 1 year mark and the warranty is expired. I have barely used it and left it in pristine condition.
Spontaneously the monitor will “freeze” the current image and then slowly turn white with some faint gray blotches. If I move the top of the laptop toward me, sometimes the image comes back to normal. If I move it backward, then the image freezes and goes white again.
External monitor works fine. I opened the top and bottom of the laptop, and checked the connection on both sides, it seems fine. Is it possible that the cable is getting squished in the hinge..judging from the fact that moving the top back and forth causes the problem to re-appear or go away? Lately I have been using the laptop without the LCD bezel, and I removed the left speaker to give the cable more breathing room. I think this is ridiculous! The problem does happen sponataneously so I don’t know if I’ve truly narrowed down the problem yet. Have you ever seen something like this?
Thanks! (love the website and I used the link for your AR service manuals!)
October 29th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Raf,
Your description sounds like a problem with the LCD screen. Apparently there is a bad solder joint somewhere on the LCD controller and it fails intermittently.

I need tha manual for Vaio VGN-CS115D, or at least someone who could tell me how to make the fan noise stop.
November 4th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Marc,
It depends on what kind of noise you have. In some cases cleaning the fan will help. If not, probably you’ll have to replace the fan.

I have a VGN-FS760/W. It recently stopped functioning. When I power the unit on it sounds like it is starting normally. The HDD lights and other lights come on, but the LCD screen stays blank. Where do I need to start?
November 29th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
Charlie Blair,
Could be memory failure.
1. Try reconnecting memory modules, make sure they make good connection with the slots.
2. Try removing memory modules one by one. Test the laptop with each module separately. One of the modules could be bad and the laptop will start when the bad module is removed.

Hello I have A Sony Laptop PCG-5G3L. Yesterday, I was watching a video online and my computer was on the charger. Then, all of a sudden, the computer shut down, and made a crashing type of sound, which worried me. Then, after A minute, I pressed the power button to on the computer and the power was not working, meaning the computer just does not turn on , and I tried so hard to turn it on, but it just does not. Can you tell me what the problem might be as to why my laptop just does not turn on? Are there any solutions? I mean I had files in my computer and I am just so worried about it. Please, I would be happy if I can be contacted ASAP. Thanks so much!
January 23rd, 2010 at 10:38 pm
Hello Priyanka:
I don’t know if you have the problems with the second ram (just take out the two rams and just place one at a time to test it, use one slot and then try with the other slot) May be with just one ram you can turn on your laptop. Another thing that you can do (to recover your files) it’s to take the hard drive and put it in a portable case and read it from another PC. Good Luck.
