Today I found a great source with service manuals for Sony Vaio VGN series laptops and notebooks. Links to the service manuals were posted on one of the Russian forums (comment 13). Not sure for how long these service manuals will be available for downloads but they are the time of wringing this post. Some files are large and it might take some time to download them, so be patient.

    Vincent,

I want to repair my VGN-S150. It sometimes fails to pass the BIOS POST. When it fails, I’ll still get the power light, the battery light (when appropriate), and the Wireless light (when turned on), but there’s no LCD activity, and no Vaio sound (that’s the setting I turned to tell me BIOS POST was successful).

Could be memory related problem. Have you tried removing RAM modules, reseting them, turning on the laptop with only one RAM module installed? Try that first.

I suspect it’s either the ATI chip or one of the other unprotected chips (it’s either the Northbridge or Southbridge, but it sits to the left of the CPU and to the lower right of the ATI chip.

I think putting pressure on one or two chips could restore functionality to the laptop.

If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the motherboard. You cannot resolder/replace these chips at home.

above is my problem before i posted to another forum but no solution found.
I am sure that when dismantling the laptop, you have accidentally removed the tape sticked on the IB(inverter board). The IB is usually laid inside a transparent cubic plastic tube located under screen. Please take the IB out of the tube and wrap it with transparent sellotape around it as spiral shape from head to end till IB is fully wrapped. then re-insert inside the plastic tube and connect the power connectors at 2 heads. I am sure it will work fine forever, that’s amazing. Don’t think that the tape doesn’t effect to the problem, Yes, it really does. Remember not to remove any sellotape sticked on mainboard.

I have a Toshiba centrino laptop, it had been serving me 2 for years but now it has a problem with its LCD screen. The screen often goes off and becomes very dark, there isn’t any lighting on the screen, but when I look close to the screen, I can see the GUI display as it is normally working. Sometimes the screen goes off when playing film or music but the film or music sound is still playing, and I still can see the statement of the film still moving on in a very dim image. I am sure that my laptop is normally working except the backlight. When this problem happens, I close the lid and my laptop goes to standby mode, after that I open the lid and the screen it lit again, Sometimes I have to close and open several times to get it lit back. One thing very special, If I open the lid lower or equal 90 degree, It just flash in milisecond and then turns dark. If I open it more than 90degree, It works fine. But it’s not convenient to work with a laptop like tis. I don’t know what wrong with it. Anyone has good ideas? Please help me!

Thanx for the Sony repair manual links – sure appriciate it. The Sony’s are suipposed to be somewhat tricky to change even a HD or memory from what i understand – these will help.

Now if you run into a set of links for the exploded views with part numbers for ordering… that would complete what i need to fix my VGN-SZ460n.

I tried Sony , and though they’ll lopok up a part number via land line discription part by part – that risks a wrong part being sent…

They wouldn’t send the exploded views for reference of part numbers.

    go figure…? lol

    thanx again forthe PDF’s above

Can I replace the IDE hard disk that came with the Sony FS790 with an SSD drive like the Intel X25M 80GB Solid State drive? Do they use the same hardware connectors and interface?
