In this post I explain how to troubleshoot battery charging problems. I will discuss most common failure examples and suggest some troubleshooting steps.

Example 1.

Laptop shuts off when AC adapter unplugged.

When you move the cursor arrow over the battery icon while the laptop is connected to AC adapter, it show the remaining charge and says “charging”.

The power meter utility (if available) also shows that battery is connected and charging.

But… as soon as you unplug the AC adapter, the laptop shuts off completely.

Possible problems:
1. The battery not seated correctly. Try reconnecting it.
2. The battery contacts got dirty or oxidized and it’s not making good connection with the motherboard. Apply some electronic contact cleaner on the contacts.
3. If reconnecting the battery doesn’t help, most likely it’s bad and has to be replaced.
4. If you replaced the battery but the problem still exists, this is motherboard related failure. Apparently the charging circuit on the motherboard failed. In this case the whole motherboard has to be replaced (or repaired on the component level).

Example 2.

The battery not detected by the laptop.

There is a red cross on the battery icon.

If you move the cursor arrow over the battery icon, it says “no battery detected”.

Possible problems:
1. Most likely the battery is bad. You have a very good chance to fix this problem by replacing it with a new one.
2. If replacing the battery doesn’t help, this is motherboard related failure. The motherboard has to be replaced (or repaired on component level).

Example 3.

The battery discharges very quickly after it reaches some critical point.

The battery detected by the laptop and charges properly to 100%.
When you unplug the AC adapter, it take normal time to discharge until some critical point (let’s say 80%) but after that the battery discharges very quickly to 0%.

Possible problems:
This is battery failed. It has to be replaced with a new one.

Example 4.

The battery charges only if the power plug positioned correctly.

You have to wiggle the power plug in order to charge the battery. After you find the right position, it charges properly.

Possible problems:
1. AC adapter failure. The AC adapter power cable is damaged. Here’s how to test your AC adapter.
2. If the AC adapter works fine, most likely this is power jack (connector where you plug power adapter) failure. In this case the power jack has to be replaced.

    Michael,
In a Satellite M35X the battery connected directly to the motherboard. If you have exactly same problem with two different batteries and both not detected, most likely this is motherboard failure.

Not likely. Even with a failed fan the laptop should turn on at least for a while.

It’s possible the AC adapter failed while you were away. After that the laptop worked fine until the battery had charge and turned off after that. Now you cannot turn it on because the AC adapter is dead and the battery has no charge.
Do you have a voltmeter to test the AC adapter?

Turn on the laptop (without external monitor connected) and take a closer look at the LCD screen. Can you see a very faint image on the screen? The image could be so dark that you have to use a flashlight to see anything? Anyway, is the image there?

If the laptop still runs on battery power but it just doesn’t last long, most likely you have a problem with the battery.

    Dear Laptop repair guy,

Recently my Toshiba Satellite (big, about 3 years old) has been having battery problems. It has significantly reduced battery life, but worst of all it doesn’t warn you reliably about the level of charge, it just jumps straight from about 50% to the 5% warning red light situation.

And now, for example, it is plugged in, 71% available, but NOT charging. Why wouldn’t it charge up to 100%?

Is there anything I can do? Get a new battery?

It’s hard to tell without testing the laptop with another known good AC adapter.
Does your laptop work fine with the AC adapter plugged when the battery is removed? If it does, most likely the AC adapter is good.
Most likely it’s either bad battery or possible motherboard failure. I cannot tell.

I had it up and running for 3 days with out any problem so I gave it back to her and it worked fine until the battery died. She plugged in the AC adapter and gets a blinking red light. So I now have the laptop again and when you take the battery out it is dead as a door nail. I followed you directions on checking out the AC adapter and it bounces around from .02 to .12 volts so I believe the trouble is the AC adapter. I would just like some confirmation before I tell her she now needs to spend more money for an AC adapter. Thanks Bill

    Could be defective battery.
Also, try reconnecting the battery a few times, it’s possible the battery contacts oxidized and reconnecting the battery will fix the issue.
Is it a third-party battery? I really trust only factory replacement batteries.

First, the website is great and extremely useful. Thanks!
I have an Aspire 5310 which works fine in every respect except the following: the battery discharges very, very quickly. When on and plugged into the mains, it shows as charging (according to both hardware light and Vista system tray icons) but continues to discharge at an alarming rate (c.30mins). It even discharges when off! (Proper “off” not standby.) Takes about 8-10 hours to completely discharge whilst off (even when still plugged into the mains and with the “charging” light on) during which the laptop base remains warm around the battery/motherboard connection (even without AC adaptor in place). This happens with three different batteries that I can charge up without problem in another laptop.
Another point is that once completely discharged whilst off, I need to recharge the battery elsewhere and then replace it in the dodgy Acer whilst the mains plug is in and on or it won’t start (with or without battery in place).
Apologies for the long post but this is driving me mad!

Have you tried another AC adapter. Maybe your adapter is faulty and doesn’t provide correct voltage? Just a guess.
If it’s not the adapter, sounds like you have motherboard problem. Otherwise, it wouldn’t fail same way with three different batteries.
I think most likely this is motherboard failure because you said “It even discharges when off! (Proper “off” not standby.)”

Most likely it’s one of the following:
    1. The DC jack failed and has to be resoldered or replaced. It’s possible the failed jack shoring the AC adapter and because of the the adapter light goes off when it’s plugged into the laptop. It’s necessary to disassemble the laptop and take a closer look at the DC jack. If it’s loose of damaged, replace it with a new one. In the following post I explain how to replaced failed DC jack: http://www.laptoprepair101.com.....air-guide/
    2. If the jack looks normal and not loose, most likely this is motherboard related failure. I don’t think the laptop worth repair in this case.

I have a compaq 515 notebook, a few months ago I was in my friends apt using & charging my laptop which frequently would get pretty hot when I would charge & use at the same time. This last time, there was a bunch of damp, white smoke pouring out of the charging jack (while still plugged in) the charger shorted out, I unplugged everything but it hasnt worked again.

I was however able to continue using the laptop until the battery lost all of its charge. I had igo (mfr of the charger I was using)replace the charger i was using as at the time, as I thought it was a problem related to the charger shorting out due to a power surge or something. Once it was replaced, as soon as I would plug the charger into the jack on the laptop, the charger would turn off & no charging happened, all lights on charger go out & only for one second does a white light flash where it previously lit green to show the laptop was charging. I was going to buy a new battery as suggested by a friend but after reading one of your posts I’m wondering now if it’s the charging jack or a bigger problem. Laptop doesn’t turn on at all & doesn’t charge with any charger :(. Your help will be sincerely appreciated.

The battery plugged directly into the motherboard. A new battery didn’t fix the problem, so it must be motherboard related failure.
It’s not virus related problem, that’s for sure.
You can try updating the BIOS if there is newer version available. If it doesn’t help, most likely it’s bad motherboard.

Did you test the AC adapter?
Find a multimeter and test voltage on the AC adapter plug. While testing the voltage, move the cord. If power cuts off, you have a problem with the cord.
A bad AC adapter cord can cause intermittent battery charging failure.

A bad AC adapter cord can cause intermittent battery charging failure.

I have a compatible AC adapter, distributes various voltages.
I use set to 18V and the multimeter reading is 18.2V.
Can I try to set 19V? The reading multimeter is 19.4V.
Even if I move the cable and jack does not change anything, the voltage is not interrupted.
The load shedding is intermittent individually.

Sounds like your AC adapter is OK.
You said the screen looses brightness intermittently. Does it go from normal brightness to completely black screen or the screen just gets darker a little bit?
If the screen just gets darker, most likely it happens because the laptop switches from full power to battery mode.
Usually it happens when there is a problem with the AC adapter or DC jack.

    Good day,

I have a compaq A900 laptop. It was given to me by a friend so i could check what the problem is but I’m currently at a loss.

I have checked the AC adapter with a multi-meter and it is ok. I also dismantled the laptop and check the DC harness cable and it is also ok.

The problem is, when i plug the AC adapter, the LED’s will not light up and it does not charge. I’m not sure if the battery is dead since i cannot charge it.

Now the tricky part is, when I used a fully charged battery from a friend, the laptop works fine. There must be something on the motherboard I’m missing. I checked all the pin connections of the motherboard to the DC harness and it seems ok.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank You very much~!!!

    2. failed DC jack.
    3. failed motherboard.

I have a Compaq Presario F500, and I am unable to charge my (now exhausted) battery. I had one or two instances where despite being plugged in, the ac adaptor didn’t charge it. Then, the battery ran out while plugged in. (This makes me think the battery was OK.) The blue light at the plug-in point no longer lights up, and it doesn’t recharge. Someone at work tested my power adaptor and said it seem to be Ok. Is this a battery issue, or do you think it is a connection problem? Hope you can help.

Could be a problem with the DC jack (power socket). Can you make the light work if you adjust position of the power adapter inside the socket?
The DC jack located on the power board. You can try replacing the power board and see if it fixes the problem.

This could be just simple AC adapter failure. It’s possible the AC adapter went bad and the laptop stopped charging the battery after that.
Now you cannot turn it on because the battery doesn’t have enough charge.
First, I would test the AC adapter. You can do it with a multimeter.
Alternatively, you can test the laptop with another compatible AC adapter.

It’s not very clear if the laptop turns on at all. What happens when you push on the power button? Does the laptop start at all?
By the way, you can test the AC adapter with a voltmeter.
It’s possible the AC adapter is dead and the battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the laptop.

If the laptop doesn’t turn on at all, there could be a problem with the power button board. Shown in the step 10, it’s above the keyboard.
There could be a problem with the DC jack.

This could be a problem with the battery charging circuit on the motherboard.
Normally, the laptop would run from AC adapter when the battery removed.
Also, I would suggest testing the laptop with another power adapter. Maybe your original adapter failing (not providing enough power to start the laptop and charge the battery).

Try this. Unplug the AC adapter and use the laptop on battery power until it discharges completely.

If the laptop will not charge two different batteries, most likely this is motherboard related problem.
Yes, there is a chance of bad AC adapter. Maybe it’s not providing enough power to charge the battery but I think this is motherboard issue.
Remove the battery and run the laptop just on AC power. Does it work this way? If yes, probably the adapter is good.

First of all, I would test the laptop with another AC adapter. It’s possible your AC adapter is not working properly under load and not providing enough power to charge the battery.
If same problem occurs with another AC adapter, check the DC jack. Maybe the DC jack is loose and has to be resoldered or replaced.

    Hey cj2600,

Can I get your opinion on this? I am in the process of resurrecting an old Gateway Solo 9100 laptop as a Linux machine. Obviously the original battery is dead, so I scouted for a replacement. First was a Chinese (no offense) battery, that held a charge but gave me an error, so I sent it back. Now I found a company that sells new Original Gateway Li-ion batteries on the cheap. And they do have the original Gateway logo.

So, it shows the battery charging in Linux and on the laptop itself, but when I pull the plug, system goes dead. Now I have a multimeter and I tested the battery bay (where this model has 2 believe it or not), and both are putting out voltage when plugged in (also tested the AC adapter – original one – at capacity). The voltage coming out of the battery bay is about 4.75 VDC. But the battery has about 10 VDC in it as I tested the same pins on the battery bay and battery itself.

So, could it still be a motherboard problem – or is this a battery problem?

    Thanks!
    Bill

If the laptop not charging the battery with a good known AC adapter, it’s either bad battery or motherboard failure. The next step is testing the laptop with another battery.

First of all, I would try another AC adapter. It’s possible your AC adapter is failing. Maybe it’s not putting out enough power when plugged into the laptop. I’ve seen it happening before.
If you have the same problem with another AC adapter, most likely this is motherboard related failure.

    I have a unique problem.

The “no battery is detected” icon shows up on my laptop (like example 2)

However when i unplug the adapter the laptop continues to run (using the battery). But it still shows no battery detected.

What could be the problem? Thanks

Check laptop memory. This could be memory related failure. One of the modules can be bad.

Hey guy’s, could you help me out. I have a Compaq nc6320 and in Jan i bought a replacement battery. I follwed the guildlines to charge and it is a original HP battery. The problem i have is that when it is plugged into the laptop and the AC is conected (whilst using laptop)it discharges. Now when the laptop is closed the battery does charge but the light on the laptop blinks. Also if the battery empties whilst still connected to the mains AC the laptop shuts off (not down). It sounds like the switching between AC and battery is faulty, am i right?? if not what is going on??? and can i do anything myself???

Most likely it’s either bad battery or there is a problem with the motherboard. If new battery does’t fix the problem, it’s bad motherboard.

I stopped using the laptop with battery 10 days ago when I arrived at the seaside and now that I tried to use it again it shows energy level but not chargind and it is no longer possible to use it without ac adapter (for example if i remove the ac adapter leaving the battery alone it goes off).
I only see a fast yellow (recharge) light when i power on but then no more signal of battery.
I already tried to remove the software adapter and I have linux on it on dual boot with windows 7.
    What could i try now?

pls my laptop work with battery or directly on AC but the laptop does not charge the battery, what could be the problem?

  145. 145
    cj2600 Says:

    @ zecodudu,
It’s either failed battery or there is a problem with the motherboard. It’s hard to tell without testing the laptop with another known good battery.
If you experience the same problem after battery replacement, this is motherboard related failure.
