In this post I explain how to troubleshoot laptop battery charging problems. I will list most common battery failure examples and suggest some troubleshooting steps.
Example 1.
Laptop detects the battery but shuts off when AC adapter unplugged.
When you move the cursor arrow over the battery icon while the laptop is connected to AC adapter, it show the remaining battery charge and says “charging”.

The batter power meter utility (if available) also shows that battery is connected and charging.

But… as soon as you unplug the AC adapter, the laptop shuts off completely.
Possible problems:
1. The battery not seated correctly. Try reconnecting the battery.
2. The battery contacts got dirty or oxidized and the battery is not making good connection with the motherboard. Try reconnecting the battery a few times.
3. If reconnecting the battery doesn’t help, most likely the battery is bad and has to be replaced.
4. If you replaced the battery but the problem still exists, this is motherboard related failure. Apparently the battery charging circuit has failed. In this case the whole motherboard has to be replaced (or repaired on component level).
Example 2.
The battery not detected by the laptop.
The battery is installed and you know it’s connected correctly but there is a red cross on the battery icon.

If you move the cursor arrow over the battery icon, it says “no battery detected”.
Possible problems:
1. Most likely the battery is bad. You have a very good chance to fix this problem by replacing the battery.
2. If replacing the battery doesn’t help, this is motherboard related failure. The motherboard has to be replaced (or repaired on component level).
Example 3.
The battery discharges very quickly after it reaches some critical point.

The battery detected by the laptop and charges properly to 100%.
When you unplug the AC adapter, it take normal time to discharge until some critical point (let’s say 80%) but after that the battery discharges very quickly to 0%.
Possible problems:
This is battery related failure. The battery is bad and has to be replaced.
Example 4.
The battery charges only if the power plug positioned correctly.
You have to wiggle the power plug in order to charge the battery. After you find the right position, the battery charges properly.

Possible problems:
1. AC adapter failure. The AC adapter power cable is damaged. You can test your AC adapter with a voltmeter.
2. If the AC adapter works fine, most likely this is power jack (connector where you plug power adapter) failure. In this case the power jack has to be replaced.
In some laptop models the power jack is not soldered to the motherboard, it’s attached to a power harness.

In this case, you can unplug the failed power jack from the motherboard and replace it with a new one.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M35x laptop. The laptop stopped detecting the battery, so I bought a new one. Same problem. Do you think my new battery is bad or I have another problem?
July 22nd, 2010 at 1:53 pm
Michael,
In a Satellite M35X the battery connected directly to the motherboard. If you have exactly same problem with two different batteries and both not detected, most likely this is motherboard failure.

I have a laptop with no display on the screen but when i use external monitor,it has a good display!!!do you think the lcd of my loptop was damaged and it must be replaced??place reply!!!
July 28th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
victoria,
Not likely. Even with a failed fan the laptop should turn on at least for a while.
When you plug the AC adapter, do you get any lights at all?
July 28th, 2010 at 10:04 pm
debashis paul,
It’s possible the AC adapter failed while you were away. After that the laptop worked fine until the battery had charge and turned off after that. Now you cannot turn it on because the AC adapter is dead and the battery has no charge.
Do you have a voltmeter to test the AC adapter?
July 28th, 2010 at 10:06 pm
Roger,
Turn on the laptop (without external monitor connected) and take a closer look at the LCD screen. Can you see a very faint image on the screen? The image could be so dark that you have to use a flashlight to see anything? Anyway, is the image there?

sir, my problem is assocaited with example 3…I had bought usb T.v tuner card. When i pluged in t.v tuner card, laptop was running on battery, it suddenly turned off. After dat incident, laptop battery backup has reduced to 15mins or so..It charges fast and runs out fast..around 37% remaining it shows low battery singnal..whether it is motherboard related problem or battery has damaged?
July 29th, 2010 at 11:26 pm
hardeep,
If the laptop still runs on battery power but it just doesn’t last long, most likely you have a problem with the battery.

Dear Laptop repair guy,
Recently my Toshiba Satellite (big, about 3 years old) has been having battery problems. It has significantly reduced battery life, but worst of all it doesn’t warn you reliably about the level of charge, it just jumps straight from about 50% to the 5% warning red light situation.
And now, for example, it is plugged in, 71% available, but NOT charging. Why wouldn’t it charge up to 100%?
Is there anything I can do? Get a new battery?
Yours
Ned
September 22nd, 2010 at 8:40 pm
Ned, I had the same problem with my Dell Inspiron laptop. My battery was going from about 60% to 0% very quickly. I replaced the battery and it fixed the problem. Hope it helps.
September 24th, 2010 at 9:28 pm
Congratulations!!! Your tutorials are spectacular and has been of tremendous help to me as an upcoming laptop technician. Keep the flag flying u are 1 in a million
September 27th, 2010 at 3:34 am
Ned England,
I think this is failed battery. Most likely replacing the battery will fix your problem.

September 27th, 2010 at 10:56 am
ANDY,
So, the laptop is completely dead and you cannot turn it on?
Do you see any LED light when AC adapter plugged?
September 27th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
Hi Laptop guy my laptop battery seems to be fine but it’s not charging. When I plug in the charger to the wall socket it shows the green light but when i plug it into the laptop it’s starts blinking(which is not normal) and the laptop does not charge.Whats wrong?
September 27th, 2010 at 12:36 pm
peter,
It’s hard to tell without testing the laptop with another known good AC adapter.
Does your laptop work fine with the AC adapter plugged when the battery is removed? If it does, most likely the AC adapter is good.
Most likely it’s either bad battery or possible motherboard failure. I cannot tell.
I would try replacing the battery first.
September 30th, 2010 at 1:58 am
Well your computer battery may no be inserted correctly as it might have come out due to a fall. You need to go to a computer repair shop to get it inserted correctly.

I just found this site and it is great! It is now book marked.
I am trying to fix a friends Gateway MT6831 laptop. She initially had a hard drive failure so we put a new HD in and installed the OS and additional software. I had it up and running for 3 days with out any problem so I gave it back to her and it worked fine until the battery died. She plugged in the AC adapter and gets a blinking red light. So I now have the laptop again and when you take the battery out it is dead as a door nail. I followed you directions on checking out the AC adapter and it bounces around from .02 to .12 volts so I believe the trouble is the AC adapter. I would just like some confirmation before I tell her she now needs to spend more money for an AC adapter. Thanks Bill
October 21st, 2010 at 5:29 pm
Bill,
I think you need a new AC adapter. Shouldn’t be very expensive.
October 24th, 2010 at 6:46 am
well i see a strange problem. am running windows 7 and i just buy a new battery it came with 50 pct charge. plug in the ac adopter for 2hours and its still at 50 pct. i try other chargers. still nothing. i guess its something with the battery charging circuit on the motherboard. any idea how to fix that if its the case?
October 29th, 2010 at 9:53 am
xfact,
Could be defective battery.
Also, try reconnecting the battery a few times, it’s possible the battery contacts oxidized and reconnecting the battery will fix the issue.
Is it a third-party battery? I really trust only factory replacement batteries.

My friend asked me to repair his Acer Aspire 4920. when i press the on button, it didn’t boot. so i charge it. but when i press the on button again, it is discharged from the power charger. the light that indicating charging will turn off. what actually the problem of my friend’s laptop?
October 31st, 2010 at 10:31 am
watcha06,
Please provide more details.
Does the laptop turn on at all?
Can you turn it on with the battery removed?
Does it display any video on the screen?
etc…
November 1st, 2010 at 4:51 am
First, the website is great and extremely useful. Thanks!
I have an Aspire 5310 which works fine in every respect except the following: the battery discharges very, very quickly. When on and plugged into the mains, it shows as charging (according to both hardware light and Vista system tray icons) but continues to discharge at an alarming rate (c.30mins). It even discharges when off! (Proper “off” not standby.) Takes about 8-10 hours to completely discharge whilst off (even when still plugged into the mains and with the “charging” light on) during which the laptop base remains warm around the battery/motherboard connection (even without AC adaptor in place). This happens with three different batteries that I can charge up without problem in another laptop.
Another point is that once completely discharged whilst off, I need to recharge the battery elsewhere and then replace it in the dodgy Acer whilst the mains plug is in and on or it won’t start (with or without battery in place).
Apologies for the long post but this is driving me mad!

November 2nd, 2010 at 11:39 am
stace3610,
Have you tried another AC adapter. Maybe your adapter is faulty and doesn’t provide correct voltage? Just a guess.
If it’s not the adapter, sounds like you have motherboard problem. Otherwise, it wouldn’t fail same way with three different batteries.
I think most likely this is motherboard failure because you said “It even discharges when off! (Proper “off” not standby.)”
November 3rd, 2010 at 3:21 am
Thanks for the advice; I was hoping it wasn’t a motherboard issue but I suppose I need to bite the bullet!
Keep up the good work.
Regards,
Stace3610.

I have the same problem as Jen – post #36. My HP HDX wasn’t charging either of the batteries I have. Now both batteries are dead, and the machine will only boot for a second then turn off when plugged in and with the battery installed. The machine won’t turn on at all with the battery out and AC plugged in. Unfortunately, my warranty expired a little over a month ago. HP customer support was useless – except for trying to sell me on an extended warranty plan. No wonder people love their MACs so much.

hi i have toshiba satelite laptop. the problem is when the laptop is turn on the baterry is charging and when i turn it off the battery indicator light will be gone and the ac power light still there. on the windows the battery charging indicator wont charge
November 17th, 2010 at 10:49 am
toshiba laptop charge only when the laptop is off and when you turn it on , it wont charge no more and continue drain of the battery even ac adapter is plug, if you plug ac adapter without the bATTERY IT WILL TURN OFF IMMIDIATELY WHEN YOU TURN ON.

Hey,
A little over a month ago I was given a gently used Dell laptop. A few days ago my laptop randomly shut off while I was on it. It wouldn’t turn back on at first, but after I removed and replaced the battery it turned on just fine. The next day my laptop wouldn’t recognize the charger. I quickly lost all the power on the battery and it hasn’t turned on since. There is nothing wrong with the charger, when pluged in to a different laptop it works perfectly. I did notice that once I plug the charger into my laptop, the charger will turn off. The green power light goes off immeadiately and won’t charge any other laptop until you unplug the charger from the wall and plug it in again. Please help, this was a birthday present and I would love to get it working again. Thanks in advance.
December 10th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
Chelsey,
Most likely it’s one of the following:
1. The DC jack failed and has to be resoldered or replaced. It’s possible the failed jack shoring the AC adapter and because of the the adapter light goes off when it’s plugged into the laptop. It’s necessary to disassemble the laptop and take a closer look at the DC jack. If it’s loose of damaged, replace it with a new one. In the following post I explain how to replaced failed DC jack: http://www.laptoprepair101.com.....air-guide/
2. If the jack looks normal and not loose, most likely this is motherboard related failure. I don’t think the laptop worth repair in this case.

I have a compaq 515 notebook, a few months ago I was in my friends apt using & charging my laptop which frequently would get pretty hot when I would charge & use at the same time. This last time, there was a bunch of damp, white smoke pouring out of the charging jack (while still plugged in) the charger shorted out, I unplugged everything but it hasnt worked again.
I was however able to continue using the laptop until the battery lost all of its charge. I had igo (mfr of the charger I was using)replace the charger i was using as at the time, as I thought it was a problem related to the charger shorting out due to a power surge or something. Once it was replaced, as soon as I would plug the charger into the jack on the laptop, the charger would turn off & no charging happened, all lights on charger go out & only for one second does a white light flash where it previously lit green to show the laptop was charging. I was going to buy a new battery as suggested by a friend but after reading one of your posts I’m wondering now if it’s the charging jack or a bigger problem. Laptop doesn’t turn on at all & doesn’t charge with any charger
. Your help will be sincerely appreciated.

Hello,
Thanks for what you are doing to community. I have a compaq CQ60-420US lap top, which was running fine until yesterday. It turned off abruptly. When I put it on adapter, the light which is close to plug point glows(confirming power comes from adapter). But when I turn on laptop do not come on. I tried taking out battery and replacing it several times with no change in behaviour. None of the light in front of laptop glows confirming power is not coming into laptop
Any help or suggestion is highly appreciated.

Hi all. I’ve Toshiba Satellite L500 with Windows7. Two days ago a red cross apeared over battery indicator and notice: 30% available, plugged in, not charging. Consider replacing your battery. And when I plug off AC laptop shuts down. I replaced the battery but the same action – when plug out AC the computer shuts down. Run some antivirus programs – no results. I instaled a batery tester who told me that battery is not instaled. Run SCF program – not bad files. Tried with power manager – no results. Pls help !!!

Hi, I have a problem with my Compaq CQ60-118EL
The notebook With AC Adapter is operating normally, with battery operating normally.
When I try to charge the battery occurs the problem … namely, that the charging is intermittent and the screen loses brightness intermittently.
The Dc jack seems to be good.
Could be causing the charging circuit such as the faulty maxim chip?
I hope in your help.
February 9th, 2011 at 6:09 pm
George,
The battery plugged directly into the motherboard. A new battery didn’t fix the problem, so it must be motherboard related failure.
It’s not virus related problem, that’s for sure.
You can try updating the BIOS if there is newer version available. If it doesn’t help, most likely it’s bad motherboard.
February 9th, 2011 at 11:05 pm
Paul,
Did you test the AC adapter?
Find a multimeter and test voltage on the AC adapter plug. While testing the voltage, move the cord. If power cuts off, you have a problem with the cord.
A bad AC adapter cord can cause intermittent battery charging failure.

A bad AC adapter cord can cause intermittent battery charging failure.
I have a compatible AC adapter, distributes various voltages.
I use set to 18V and the multimeter reading is 18.2V.
Can I try to set 19V? The reading multimeter is 19.4V.
Even if I move the cable and jack does not change anything, the voltage is not interrupted.
The load shedding is intermittent individually.
February 12th, 2011 at 11:19 am
Paul,
Sounds like your AC adapter is OK.
You said the screen looses brightness intermittently. Does it go from normal brightness to completely black screen or the screen just gets darker a little bit?
If the screen just gets darker, most likely it happens because the laptop switches from full power to battery mode.
Usually it happens when there is a problem with the AC adapter or DC jack.

Could be bad AC adapter. Test it with a voltmeter. Make sure the adapter outputs correct voltage.
Could be bad DC jack in the laptop.
What happens if you remove the battery and start the laptop just from AC adapter. Any signs of life at all?

I did everything from removing drives, taking out the battery, etc….but but my 12 yr old son..moved around my ac cord into my laptop and got it into the right spot and it start charging again….it is finally at 100% again!!!! So I have to say its the port or the adaptor. Hope this helps. I thought it was a software problem for so long….

2. When you transfer files to another computer, make sure the computer has a good and up to date antivirus software installed. You don’t want infected files on another computer.
3. Reinstall OS on the infected laptop.

Good day,
I have a compaq A900 laptop. It was given to me by a friend so i could check what the problem is but I’m currently at a loss.
I have checked the AC adapter with a multi-meter and it is ok. I also dismantled the laptop and check the DC harness cable and it is also ok.
The problem is, when i plug the AC adapter, the LED’s will not light up and it does not charge. I’m not sure if the battery is dead since i cannot charge it.
Now the tricky part is, when I used a fully charged battery from a friend, the laptop works fine. There must be something on the motherboard I’m missing. I checked all the pin connections of the motherboard to the DC harness and it seems ok.
Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank You very much~!!!

I have my battery removed, but when I plug the AC Adapter cable in, it show the remaining battery charge and says “100% remaining (charging)”, since this morning and it still happening. And when it does that, my CPU fan suddenly stop working!

my batery is not charging but i already put the adapter what should i do
September 22nd, 2011 at 12:58 pm
@ ysiad,
If your AC adapter works properly, it could be one of the following:
1. bad battery.
2. failed DC jack.
3. failed motherboard.

Hello,
I have a Compaq Presario F500, and I am unable to charge my (now exhausted) battery. I had one or two instances where despite being plugged in, the ac adaptor didn’t charge it. Then, the battery ran out while plugged in. (This makes me think the battery was OK.) The blue light at the plug-in point no longer lights up, and it doesn’t recharge. Someone at work tested my power adaptor and said it seem to be Ok. Is this a battery issue, or do you think it is a connection problem? Hope you can help.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:17 am
@ Rob,
Could be a problem with the DC jack (power socket). Can you make the light work if you adjust position of the power adapter inside the socket?
The DC jack located on this power board. You can try replacing the power board and see if it fixes the problem.
This laptop disassembly guide could be helpful.

Your description is not very clear. Do you have only one (onboard) USB port failed or all of them failed?
November 4th, 2011 at 7:56 am
My toshiba laptop wont turn on at all. I bought a new ac charger, repaired the dc port and only the orange battery light comes on when I plug in the adapter but it still doesnt power on. I’ve tried plugging in the adapter without the battery in and it still doesnt power on. What could be the problem?
November 4th, 2011 at 8:06 am
@ hazelyz84,
Could be one of the following:
1. Failed power button. Maybe the laptop doesn’t turn on because the power button not working properly. I’ve seen it happening before.
2. Motherboard failure.

@ David V.
Could be just failed LED lamp.

When I plug my toshiba laptop in to charge, it says that it’s charging, even though the power stays at 4%. It’s a new charger, so that shouldn’t be the problem, but what else might it be? Is there any simple way this could be remedied?

@ vienne,
Could be bad battery.

I have a Gateway laptop that is exactly 2 yrs old. I was having this problem at first where it would basically say it wasn’t charging and I’d have to keep it plugged in. One day it just unexpectedly powered off and wouldn’t power back on. If I push the power button it makes noises as if it’s about to power up and lights come on but then it just powers off after about 8-10 seconds. Any ideas of what this might be? I’m hoping it’s a cheap fix because I can’t afford a new laptop at the moment. I’ve been told so many different things I don’t even know where to begin to diagnose the problem. Any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED!!! Thanks!

@ Megs,
This could be just simple AC adapter failure. It’s possible the AC adapter went bad and the laptop stopped charging the battery after that.
Now you cannot turn it on because the battery doesn’t have enough charge.
First, I would test the AC adapter. You can do it with a multimeter.
Alternatively, you can test the laptop with another compatible AC adapter.

Hi I have a laptop compaq v5000. I have a blank screen when I turned on. But I dont se the charging ligth on the front of laptop. It sound like is going but then you hear it stop. The ac adapter has been conected for a year. I never disconected because battery is no good.could it be that ac adapter is burn.

@ julio,
It’s not very clear if the laptop turns on at all. What happens when you push on the power button? Does the laptop start at all?
By the way, you can test the AC adapter with a voltmeter.
It’s possible the AC adapter is dead and the battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the laptop.

Thank you for responding. The laptop turns on when you press bottom, but just for a very short time , you can hear going but then stop. Screen is blank at all time while starting.

@ julio,
As I mentioned in the previous comment, test your laptop AC adapter.
It’s possible the adapter failed.

I have two identical ‘Dell inspiron 1420′laptops, Dell#1 was not charging neither powering on when plugged in…. Battery in #1 was placed in Dell#2 to determine if battery was good, and it did charge with no problems.
After switching back batteries, Dell#2 was not charging but able to power on when plugged in only.
Now Both Dell will not charge batteries in their respective computers.

Hi! just bought a brand new ac adapter + battery but the problem is when i connect the ac wire the light on the adapter blinks but when i remove the wire from the l/top socket it stops blinking and i think it has to do with my laptop unable to startup. Thanks any help will do.

@ daniel,
Unfortunately, I think there is a problem with the motherboard. Probably the battery charging circuit failed or something like that.
Just in case, try starting the laptop just form AC adapter with battery removed. Can you?

Just was given a laptop cuz I can’t afford a new one. Never had a laptop so im not so fast in cracking this baby open but I have a Toshiba satellite. A55-S0164..sister said it worked fine till it went dead. The power cord light is blue and its on. But the laptop is dead. Battery in or out …being plugged up matters none. Its just dead. What should my next steps be? Thanx!

@ elise,
First of all, here are Toshiba Satellite A55 disassembly instructions if you need them:
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/.....-guide.htm
If the laptop doesn’t turn on at all, there could be a problem with the power button board. Shown in the step 10, it’s above the keyboard.
There could be a problem with the DC jack.
Also, could be dead motherboard.
I cannot tell which one is failing without looking at the laptop.

my dell latitude e 4300 laptop battery icon shows a cross mark and is not charging my battery. it does not run when i remove the battery from laptop , where as till a day earlier it was giving a backup of 5 hours.
December 7th, 2011 at 12:56 pm
@ Irfan,
Most likely this is battery related problem. Replace the battery.
December 7th, 2011 at 1:13 pm
chainrup,
This could be a problem with the battery charging circuit on the motherboard.
Normally, the laptop would run from AC adapter when the battery removed.
Also, I would suggest testing the laptop with another power adapter. Maybe your original adapter failing (not providing enough power to start the laptop and charge the battery).

Okay so what about this, says charging but it will not go up OR down. It has been stuck at 91% and this is a brand new laptop. They recently sent me out a new battery and the problem still continues, is this a problem with the charger then?
December 9th, 2011 at 10:08 am
Josh,
Try this. Unplug the AC adapter and use the laptop on battery power until it discharges completely.
Now plug in the AC adapter and try charging it. Will it go above 91%?
December 9th, 2011 at 11:13 am
Now it wont charge above 0%
December 9th, 2011 at 11:24 am
@ Josh,
If the laptop will not charge two different batteries, most likely this is motherboard related problem.
Yes, there is a chance of bad AC adapter. Maybe it’s not providing enough power to charge the battery but I think this is motherboard issue.
Remove the battery and run the laptop just on AC power. Does it work this way? If yes, probably the adapter is good.

i have that problem example no 1..i bought this asusdisneyedition mk90h last year,, but this few weeks,,,i knew that my laptop battery shows the same way in problem 1 ,,but how can i refresh this ,,or reconnecting,,the battery designed as built in,,for d kids porposes what can i do???? what is the possible?? do i need to buy new battery? i need an answer..

@ myrna,
I’m not familiar with this netbook, but if the battery is built in there is not much you can do.
You’ll have to use it as is on the AC adapter power or buy a new netbook.
