If your laptop does not start at all or it starts but will not boot properly, it’s possible that you can fix the laptop at home without taking it to a repair center. Here are some troubleshooting tips for you. I’m not sure if I can cover all situation at once, so I will update this post as more examples come into my mind.
The laptop appears to be dead. You plug the AC adapter but the LEDs (power light, hard drive light, battery charge light, etc…) do not light up and the laptop will not react at all if you press on the power button.
First of all in this situation check the AC adapter. You can test the output voltage with a voltmeter. If you cannot do that, find a known good AC adapter and use it for testing the laptop. It is possible the laptop appears to be dead because the AC adapter is bad (and the battery is discharged). If you know that the AC adapter is working properly and it outputs correct voltage but the laptop is still dead, most likely you have a power issue on the motherboard (or power board on some laptops) and it has to be replaced.
If you have to replace the AC adapter, make sure you use a correct one. The output voltage must be exactly the same as on the original adapter. The output amperage has to be the same as on the original adapter or higher, but not lower.
When you plug the AC adapter the power LED and the battery charge LED light up. When you press on the power button the laptop powers up but will not start. There is no video on LCD or external monitor.
If the power LED lights up it indicates that the laptop is getting power from the AC adapter. Most likely there is nothing wrong with the adapter but just in case test it with a voltmeter to make sure the output voltage is correct.
Also try this. Unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery and wait for 1-2 minutes. After that plug the AC adapter ans try starting the laptop again. Sometimes this trick helps.
It also could be a memory related problem. Try reseating the memory module, just remove it from the slot on the motherboard and install it back. Try installing the memory module into the other slot (if it’s available). If you have two memory modules installed, try removing them one by one and start the laptop just with one memory module installed.
If the laptop starts fine with one memory module in both slots, but will not start with the second memory module in both slots, the second memory module is faulty. Replace the module.
If the laptop starts fine with both memory modules when they are installed in the slot A, but will not start with both memory modules installed in the slot B, the slot B is faulty and you’ll have to replace the motherboard or use only one memory slot.
When you press on the power button, the laptop makes a series or short and long beeps and will not start up. There is no video on the screen.
In this situation test the memory module as I described in the situation2. Try installing a known good memory module. Most likely you are getting a beep error because of a faulty memory.
You start the laptop. It sounds like the laptop is booting normally (hard drive LED is flashing) but there is no video on the screen
In this situation test the laptop with an external monitor. If the external screen works fine but there is no video on the laptop LCD, most likely there is a problem inside the laptop display assembly. Go to my previous post witch covers laptop video problems in more details.
You start the laptop and it starts making repetitive clicking noise or grinding noise.
Most likely you hear this noise because of a faulty hard drive. You can remove the hard drive and start the laptop without it. If the noise is gone, the hard drive is your problem. Replace it.
If the laptop makes clicking or grinding noises and you still have video on the screen, you can run a hard drive test utility. I usually use Hitachi’s drive fitness test. This test is reliable and easy to use.
The laptop boots into Windows ans works for a while, but after that it shuts down by itself without any reason or warning. You restart the laptop but the same problem appears again
Most likely it’s a heat related issue. Listen for the cooling fan, make sure it works.
Also this problem might appear because of a faulty memory module, try some tips from the situation 2.
The laptop still boots ans you still can see the screen, so you can run the memory test. I usually use Memtest86+. Run the memory test and if it fails, replace the faulty module.
The laptop starts normally but video on the screen has lines, some strange characters or other defects
It could indicate a problem with the laptop LCD screen, video cable, graphics card or motherboard. Here’s my previous post witch covers troubleshooting bad images on the screen in more details.

Toshiba M35X-S149 Notebook — Customer brought this notebook into my repair shop with typical complaint that the system stopped running. Preliminary tests showed correct voltage from AC power adapter. When plugged-in, power jack could rock up and down but not side to side. Pressing ON button gave case lights but no activity. System did not run. Moving AC power connector in jack would cause system to go off. Diagnosis: Cracked solder joint on positive or ground connection of DC Power Jack.
Notebook disassembly and inspection of DC power jack revealed positive post moves up and down in motherboard contact point due to broken solder connection. Positive post is blackened from possible arcing at loose connection. After replacing the defective DC Power Jack and reassembling the notebook the system powered-up for my first test. Everything tested OK. I closed the cover and put all screws in the back. Then when I started the computer I found this mystifying problem.
I press the power button and the system starts up. There are lights on the power button, on the front ON, Battery Charge, and Power Cord indicators. The fan runs for a short time then stops. The Hard Drive indicator gives one blink. No splash screen, NOTHING. All of the mentioned lights remain lighted. The optical drive will not open.
If I depress the Power Button for the required time the system will shut down. Pressing the Power Button again gives the same results as mentioned in the previous paragraph. Now, I unplug the video cable from the motherboard and reinsert it into the outlet; press the Power Button and the system starts-up with video. The screen has proper colors. After running for several minutes the video goes off and all activity ceases except all mentioned indicator lights remain on and the Hard Drive Light remains on. I can repeat the process over and over with the same results.
Duting the time that the system is running in WindowsXP I can turn the notebook off via “Start-Turn Off Computer-Turn Off” mouse clicks. When the system is truned off this way I can press the Power Button to start the system into Windows; then it follows the 2 minute video off routine.
I have tried variations with AC power only, battery only, and plugged in the wall with battery installed. I have started the notebook without the hard drive (after the plug/unplug video) and I get the splash screen followed by searches for drives for 2 minutes then video off routine.
Seems like a video problem on the motherboard. Unplugging the screen might clear some sort of feedback from the inverter. I don’t know. I am mystified.

I think there could be a problem with the onboard video and the motherboard has to be replaced. Do you know that Toshiba extended warranty for all Satellite M35X laptops sold in the USA? You can call Toshiba and request a shipping box. They should fix it at no charge.
Thank you. I never expected to get a reply so quickly.
Did you read my post? Isn’t it odd that unplugging and replugging the video into the motherboard will permit the system to boot fully into Windows?
I am a longtime tech in his early 70s about to retire. I leave the software work and desktops to my techs. I now work only on laptops. I complete about one per day. These things never cease to amaze me. Working on laptops is my effort to avoid Alzheimer’s. At your suggestion I will contact Toshiba regarding the extended warranty.
With sincerest appreciation,
Hello, i Have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4254….i was given it as a gift back in Oct of 2006….it had been working well all the way up until a few days ago, while i was using it, the laptop went into hibernation signifying that i needed to plug in the AC adaptor, and as i went on to plug it in, unlike the other times in the past, this time the laptop did not start back up when i pressed the power button and instead the amber LEDS on the bottom just continually flashed…..i attempted to take out the battery, put it back in again….same problem existed…..and then i attempted to just plug in the adaptor without the battery, and now there were no LEDs flashing at all…im very concerned as to what problem it mite be, the laptop does not start at all. Any suggestions. Thanks.
Sir i have a small question i have one laptop Toshiba L20 its blinking the power led when power on but no display and no power on what is the solution.,.,.
Maybe you have a dead AC adapter? You can test the adapter voltage with a voltmeter, it should be 15V.
Remove the battery and plug the adapter into the laptop. Does the AC power LED (left one) lights up? If not, you have either a bad AC adapter or a problem with the motherboard.
Remove the battery and try starting the laptop just from the AC power. Is the power LED still blinking?
I got almost same problem w/ Satellite M100-164.
After the computer wakes from hibernation by raising the display panel (lid), and the LCD Monitor turns off due to power management settings, the display shows Toshiba logo and does not turn back on after a key is pressed and keyboard is not responding at all.
I Turned-off power & removed battery –no success-.
OS: windows XP HE.
Please I need help.
Check the BIOS version installed on your laptop. Then visit the manufacturer’s website and find if there is a more recent version available for downloads. Upgrade the BIOS and test the laptop again. It might help.
I have a Toshiba Tecra A5 here that won’t continue past POST. The “Press F2 to enter setup…” screen is displayed, but it’s frozen at that point. Is there a key that I can press on power on that will let me view POST in more detail? The Toshiba screen is lovely and all, but not very helpful.
I have same problem that Muhammad Faisal, but in a IBM Thinkpad T20. You plug in the AC adapter, so the AC Led turns on. If you press the ON button, the AC Led and the HD Led blinks one time (i think the AC Led blinks two or three times very quickly, but I don´t know if this makes any difference) but the laptop doesn’t turn on. I’ve tried all of the possible solutions I found on the internet forums.
I’ve taked off the Li-Ion and the CR2032 batteries, the memory module and checked the AC adapter. It still not working at all. If someone knows any other possible solutions, is welcome to post it. Thank you.
PS: Sorry for my english, i’m from argentina.-
Nope, F2 is the key you need, there is no other key to enter the BIOS setup screen. Try removing the hard drive and DVD drive and enter the BIOS setup screen without them. A faulty drive can stop the laptop from booting properly.
Try reseating the memory modules. If you have two memory sticks installed, remove them one by one and test the laptop again. It’s possible you have a faulty memory module and it freezes the laptop.
In order to narrow down the problem, you’ll have to minimize the laptop as much as you can.
1. Make sure the memory module is good. Find a known good memory stick and test the laptop again.
2. Remove hard drive, DVD drive and the wireless card. Test the laptop again.
3. Disconnect the LCD screen from the motherboard (connector is located under the keyboard) and test the laptop again.
4. Reconnect all cables and connectors you can access.
If it still will not start even after you removed all above mentioned parts, it’s possible that you have a problem with the motherboard and it has to be replaced.
If the laptop starts after one of the above mentioned steps, start assembling it back installing all removed devices one by one and find witch one is causing the problem.
I have a Dell D610. The laptop remains dead when turned off, but after half an hour of button pressing, the laptop switches on, and works (and behaves) as though nothing is wrong. ALl the applications and files are as normal.
Is it as simple as a faulty on/off button or could it be more?
When I plug in the cord into my laptop (Compaq Evo N1005v), the charge button does not appear, instead there is a quick beeping noise within the AC Adaptor. There is no Led in the AC Adaptor so I am not sure what is wrong. Is there something wrong with the AC Adaptor or is it something to do with the laptop?

i have toshiba laptop model name: satellite M70-122,model no . PSM70E-00U00FDU,Having a problem with charging, power adaptor tested ok with correctly voltage open up circuit fuse tested o.k help….what could be a problem
I have an Asus A4000 laptop. When i start the laptop, it works fine and everything works as it should. Then after no set amount of time, i hear a clicking noise which gets louder and louder and then all of a sudden the laptop just goes off without any warning. What could the problem be?
I have a problem with a ibm t41 , that will not power on , tried with just the battery, then with just ac, and both and nothing happens only get a charging batt light , but if i remove both ac and battery and fiddel between unpluginging the ac and the bat i then get a battery light plus the on light with fan on , but nothing else, the hard drive is good , any suggestions sure would be appreciated
1. Make sure the latest version of the BIOS is installed. Visit the manufacturer’s website and find the BIOS change history. Find out if there are any fixes for the battery charging problem. Upgrade the BIOS if needed.
2. Replace the battery with a known good one and test again.
3. Just in case test the laptop with another AC adapter.
4. If upgrading the BIOS and installing new battery doesn’t help, most likely you have a problem with the charging circuit on the motherboard. In this case you’ll have to replace the motherboard or use the laptop just on AC power.
I Have A New Acer 5054 Laptop, Last Night I copy a Movie From My Phone Memory then I Feel Sleep Because I didn’t Sleep for 38 Hour [Job Rush], When I wake Up This Morning, The laptop screen Become freeze On picture screen saver, Then i take out The AC adapter & The Batery then put it again, When i try to start up the laptop this morning, the LCD is Blank, DVD Rom make noise, Hard Drive Led Is On, And The Proc Led Is Blinking
PS: Sorry My English is not Very Well
I have an older Compaq Presario 2100. When i click the computer to start up, it makes a sound like the harddrive is starting up, then it clicks off and repeats this action..on / off / on / off until i take out the battery. its stuck in a loop. any help would be great. thanks!
I’m not sure what the Proc LED is. How it’s blinking?
I would check the memory first. Try reseating it and test the laptop again.
The hard drive clicks and the laptop reboots? Probably you have a faulty hard drive.
Try this. Remove the hard drive and start the laptop without it. Does it still reboots over and over or the laptop stays on all the time? If it stays on, most likely you have a problem with the hard drive and have to replace it.
Sorry, I Mean Hard Drive LED, Its Flashing Every Second together with DVD LED, I try to remove The memory & put it back, Still same, The Noise From DVD when i Eject The DVD Room to Open it Didn’t appears,
When I Try to run the Laptop Without Memory The Hard Drive LED is on but not blinking Also With The DVD LED, The Screen Still Blank no bios come up, no voice / noise inside.
First of all, if the laptop is still under warranty you should send it for repair to the manufacturer. Do not open the laptop or you can loose the warranty.
If the laptop is not under warranty anymore, try this.
1. Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery. Wait for 2-3 minutes and plug the AC adapter. Turn on the laptop.
2. Try starting the laptop without the hard drive installed and see if you can get any video. It’s possible that the hard drive is bad and it’s preventing the laptop from booting. If the laptop boots fine without hard drive, probably this is your problem.
3. Minimize the laptop as much as you can. Remove the hard drive, DVD drive, wireless card, modem, battery and test it again. If the laptop boots, start installing devices one by one until the laptop fails again. It will help you to find a faulty device.
4. Test the laptop with a known good memory stick.
yes, definately do not attempt to open up the notebook yourself if you still need to claim warranty because the warranty is voided once u open up a notebook. Esp if something goes wrong… Un;ess you have the technical support officially from the manufacturer/company of the notebook’s approval or guidance.
Up until a week ago my HP Pavilion dv2000 was running fine. Windows would start normally, but then only a blank screen would appear. I’ve reinserted battery and such but I would only end up with the same result. Even when trying to enter safe mode too. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what the problem is.
my computer turns on but says no boot sector on internal hard drive
my laptop will not turn at all. i tried pressing the power button but it would not work. i do not unstand if it is my AC adapter r my hardwrive. but when i put the adapter in, it would make these noises then turn off. and i don’t know how to replace my hard drive.
Help! Anyone?. I’m not a techie person
I have Toshiba Satellite A70. I used automatic repair tool when I received error message about Outlook. I was asked to insert Disc and allowed it to do its stuff. Outlook opened ok. I allowed laptopn to close down normally. Next time I went to use the laptop the screen does not come on. The laptop makes all the right noises. I know the charger is working ok. The three green lights at front are ok. The fan comes on. Is it coincidence or has MS office changed settings? How can I fix? Many thanks. Thomas
I think this is a coincidence that fixing Outlook killed the laptop. Here’s how you can test it. Start the laptop without the hard drive installed. Even without the hard drive installed, you still should see Toshiba logo on the screen when you turn on the laptop. Can you see anything? If not, your problem is not related to software.
If you have any memory stick installed into the expansion slot on the bottom, remove it and turn on the laptop. If the laptop starts after that, most likely you have a bad memory stick.
It also could be a problem with the LCD screen. Test your laptop with an external screen. Connect the external screen to the VGA port on the back and start the laptop. If the external video works fine but the laptop LCD will not light up, it’s possible you have a problem with the screen.
My laptop toshiba satellite pro m70 will not start at all! When i plug in the AC adaptor the LED lights up blue but the battery LED flashes amber. When i press the power button it seems like the laptop is going to turn on but 2 seconds later the power turns off again.
I have tried to turn it on with just AC power, just battery power and both – but with no luck. I have no idea how to open up the laptop or such.
Any help on how to resolve the issue would be much appreciated!
Can anyone tell me where the cmos battery is located on a Sony Vaio FS215Z? Am getting no lights at all but the AC adaptor is fine. Have taken to pieces but cannot find the battery anywhere. Didn’t remove the motherboard as we felt that was one step too far at this stage. Checked all connections as far as humanly possible. I don’t really want to bin it because the picture quality is great but you can now get twice the machine for a third of the price I paid for it 2 years ago. It isn’t a workhorse and hasn’t been abused at all.
hi 2 all,
my problems seems to be one of the above problems, yet i can’t solve it.
i own HP pavilion laptop. lately i used it and found that i am working on battery supply. after a few minutes, the battery dead. and while trying direct AC i did not have no led lit, no HD running, just the battery lit blinking. i did try to disconnect the battery and tried runnig on AC, i did also changed the Memory module, checked also the AC adaptor which runing well and shows 18.5 volt as needed. i opened the back of the computer and cleaned all the dirt and dust, but still i have the problem. i can not operate the laptop on direct AC.can somebody help me ???
Maybe there is a problem with the power jack? Does the power LED flicker when you wiggle the adapter plug inside the power jack?
First of all, wonderful website with good information.
Secondly, I work in Tech support (no training, been on the job learning as I go for about 8 months) and I have been working on getting an aging fleet of Toshiba 8100 laptops back into reasonable shape.
There is one in particular that has me puzzled. It matches scenario 2 and I had already tried replacing the memory. Used known good memory, even swapped in a known good hard drive just to be certain the drive in there was not totally dead. No success. Are both slots toast or am I missing something entriely?
Thanks for your time
this website is of great help.. it helped me fixed my laptop by my self…. thanks and god bless
Could be dead motherboard or dead CPU.
Minimize the system as much as you can and leave only motherboard, CPU and known good memory. Try starting this barebone system with an external monitor. If you still get no video, probably you have a faulty motherboard. There is a possibility of bad CPU but CPU failure is not very common.
My problem matches with 2nd scenario but only difference is that in my case when I plug the AC adapter, only the power LED light up. It’s Toshiba A135-S2386 PDC T2080/512/80/15 and I bought it on Sep, 2nd 2007. Along with laptop, I bought 1GB RAM. First three weeks, it was fine but all of a sudden it stops working. Please advice.
The power LED lights up when you plug the AC adapter, so I assume the power adapter work fine.
1. Remove the battery and try turning on the laptop from the AC adapter. Sometimes it helps.
2. Remove both memory modules one by one and test the laptop with each module in each memory slot. It’s very unlikely that both memory modules failed at the same time.
3. Try turning on the laptop without the hard dive installed. In some cases a failed hard drive might suspend the whole system.
Does your laptop makes any kind of sounds when you push on the power button? Any LED activity?
I have a Dell Latitude D610. I replaced the hard drive. Brand new one. I turned on the laptop after installing the new hard drive. It loads up but it goes to a screen where it says: No boot sector on internal hard drive. Then it says CARDBUS NIC boot failed. I need help. Thank you.
After you install a brand new hard drive you have to load the operating system and device drivers. Without the operating system installed the laptop will not work. You get these CDs when you buy a laptop. Insert the first CD (operating system) into the DVD drive and boot the laptop from this CD. Follow instructions. After the OS is loaded, install missing device drivers from the second CD (device drivers).
I have a problem with my packard bell laptop, it for the client she complained that at no notice it just shut down and when she try to power it up it will never come up. so what i did i stripe it up to check if there is any burned wire, change the memory, check the cpu and fan they all fine atfer that i put back together and it powered up but no windows screen, i try to re-install but it couldn’t let after that i formated the hard drive the laptop work fine with no problem. after two months later the same problem occurred and it does even show that its have a life no power, no light in the battery nothing and i don’t know what to do now.
I will appreciate anyone help who knows how to solve this frastrating problem. help
First of all, check the AC adapter. Make sure it outputs correct voltage and works properly.
After that check easy-to-remove parts like hard drive and memory. Try starting the laptop without battery installed.
Finally, start taking the laptop apart piece by piece and test it after each step. Minimize the laptop to barebone system: motherboard, CPU and memory. If the laptop is still dead and shows no signs of life, probably you have a failed motherboard.
Just in case. Check the power jack and make sure the motherboard gets power from the AC adapter, you can do it with a voltmeter.
acquired a laptop that had a soda spilled on it, was told by the owners that toshiba said it was the hard drive.
It was a recent spill so I pulled it apart and cleaned it up (yes I know what I’m doing there)
The problem now is it will power up fine, charge the battery, fans will go though I dont here a system beep.
But there is no video, at all. No vga nothing on the lcd and I am running out of ideas to try. usually even with a bad hd there will be even an error on the screen but I’m getting nothing. any suggestions?
I cannot figure it out. I tested the video, memory, ac adapter and they alll seems to be fine. But still cannot starts. I decided it maybe the motherboard. I replaced and still giving me the problem.
I have Tobsiha Laptop 6100
Any advice would be appreciate
I have a Toshiba Satellite a105-s2712 which has a problem that seems to match scenario 1 (no LED lights, no power…no anything) except that whenever the computer is plugged in it makes a steady clicking sound (about 2 clicks per second). The clicking sound IS NOT the hard drive (though many people have tried to tell me it must be). The sound is coming from the rear left of the computer–the area where the power cord plugs in. I’m no techie, so please keep your comments in layman’s terms–something this website seems to do remarkably well.
Thanks for this service.
There are no LED lights when you plug the AC adapter (even power LED), but the laptop itself is making a clicking sound?
First, check the AC adapter. Make sure the adapter outputs correct voltage. You can check the AC adapter with voltmeter.
Second, remove the battery, the hard drive and the DVD drive. Plug the power adapter and turn it on. Still nothing?
Reading this website tips was of great help to me!
I managed to solve my problem (the laptop wouldn’t start) by testing the memories and memory banks as suggested!
My laptop is back again and I saved time and money!
Thanks a lot! (and of course, made a donation)
I have a Compaq Persario R3000. There are no LED lights, no sound, dead. AC adaptor checked fine. Motherboard removed and checked no signs, power Jack is fine. Reassembled and Now removed all HDD, Cd drive, Battery, RAM’s, PCMCIA card and tried to power up still no joy. Any idea’s before we decide it is the motherboard
If the adapter is fine and it plugs directly into the motherboard, but the motherboard appears to be completely dead, most likely you have a bad motherboard.
pls my lap top crashed and i started it back up it goes to the toshiba screen then right after i get a blue password box and i cant get passed it i tryed my password and it wont work pls help
mine is situation no. 2. i was working on it last night when there was a “tick” sound and since then all is blank….i press power button there is no activity..just the 4 lights(charging etc.) come up and the power light goes off itself.
the bad part is that itsmy dad’s and he is going to kill me for this so i cant call an engineer…and i know simply nothing about how to actually enact on your suggestions….i cant open it ….i live in new delhi, india and its a hp notebook………help me and save me from dying…please
Try starting the laptop without the battery, just from the AC adapter.
Check the AC adapter, make sure it outputs correct voltage. If the ticking sound comes from the AC adapter, it’s possible the adapter is bad.
I have Dell D610. I was getting memory problems. Thought it was due to windows XP. Tried to reinstall the software but now it wont install. After reboot it goes to the installation and then shuts down. I ran the diagnostic and it showed memory test failure. Need help. Thanks…
i have a advent 7115 laptop its windows vista i have only had it a few months and its not working properly , it sometimes doesnt turn on and when it does come on it goes into repair and keeps resetting itself ! I dont know what to do can help me ?
I have a Dell Precision D630. When i shut down the comp i need to wait for atleast 30 minutes before i can power it back on. If i try to turn it on right away the power light comes on for a second then the there is a beep followed by the wi-fii light and it shuts down. The whole thing take about 2 seconds.
Can you please help?
I’ve a Compaq Presario V5000 series laptop which is dead. No LED light, no sound, etc. Tried another adaptor but still no response. My guess is motherboard problem from the discussion above. What do I do with the motherboard?
Thks in advance for assisting.
I don’t think that you need help because you found the problem yourself, but you definitely need new memory. 🙂
This sounds like hardware related problem. Most likely your laptop is still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
I think you are right. Sounds like a problem with the motherboard. Also, there is a chance that the motherboard itself is OK but you have a problem with the power jack.
In both cases, it’s necessary to open up the laptop and take a closer look at the motherboard. Check the power jack first. Connect the AC adapter and using a voltmeter check if power comes to the motherboard. If the motherboard receive power from the AC adapter, but it’s dead, you’ll have to replace the motherboard. You’ll find step-by-step disassembly instruction in the maintenance and service guide (4.18MB pdf file).
I have a Aspire 1520 laptop. It boots up normally into windows, but as soon as I try reinstalling windows, when it comes to the doss part, it automatically shuts itself down when it is copying the system files?
Maybe the laptop shutsdown because it overheats. Take a look inside the heatsink, is it clogged with dust? Clean the heatsink with compressed air and try reinstalling Windows again.
Also, run Memtest86+ utility to test the RAM module. If the memory fails test, replace it.
What migth be the problem if the computers doesn’t load windows, just you can see the screen as windows log loading but windos never load completly, I tried in safe mode but it just load until mup. sys ans stand forever on this step. I extract the hard drive save my information and I scanned in order to find or repair problems but it still continues…. thank you very much
My LapTop is Compaq. Suddenly its LCD stopped funtioning. It was repaired from farway.
When it came back, it was found that its powerswitch was not working correctly. The audio buttons etc. were not corectly placed. That is the bottom part seemed to vacant.
I needed to go on pressing the Powerbutton for a long time to start the laptop.
What could be the problem?
Most likely this is software relate issue. Try reimaging the hard drive using recovery discs. This process will erase everything from the hard drive and load everything back to factory defaults.
Looks like the repair shop didn’t do a good job. In your case I would send it back to them and ask to fix the problem.
I have a Compaq Presario V5000 with the exact same problem that Benny describes in Post 58. The only LED that lights is the one in the front that indicates the battery is charging. AC adapter & battery appear fine. I had a tech at work look at it, and he seems to think that is is something wrong (Possibly a blown resistor) on the LED Board PN: 417024-001. Did Benny find out the source of his problem?
i have a gateway that my uncle gave to me for free because he was upgrading and the batter was weak but it worked and i used the laptop once in a blue moon and now the led on the laptop and the ac adapter does not light and the battery is not charging any suggestions?
I have a Toshiba A85, and my problem is as follows.
Sometimes when I start it, an area somehwere near the cooling fan makes a loud roaring noise, but it doesn’t happen always.
Also, just today, I started it up as always, no roaring or ticking noises, I typed in my password as usual, and then my background showed up, but after that it stopped loading, the computer didn’t freeze, I could still move the mouse and open the Ctrl+Alt+Del window, but it doesn’t do anything after that, I restarted the computer several times, I even tried getting on another profile of the laptop and the same thing happens.
Please and thanks for your help
Wow, glad that I found this site.
I have a question. I have a Sharp PC-MM10 laptop Computer with the docking cradle. This laptop, when powered on, show a quick power on green LED, and then goes to a flashing amber LED and nothing else happens. Th battery does indicate that it is receiving a charge and when the laptop is in it’s cradle the laptop’s hard drive does show asa logical drive on the desktop. I do not think the motherboard is a complete lost cause as it is charging and the hard drive is accesible, but I could be wrong.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it is a great little laptop! 🙂
Great website. My Dell 600M laptop just died yesterday. When I press the power button, the power light shows up, but as soon as I release the button, the light dissapears and the laptop doesnt start (nothing on the screen). I have tried multiple adapters and even removing the battery and putting it back after a couple of minutes. I would really appreciate any suggestions.
I have a Compaq presario V5000 t hat needs the internal ac jack replaced. Is there any information out there on how to open the laptop so that we can replace the jack?
My laptop has suddenly stopped working. When I press the on button, the cpu fan starts for about 1-2 seconds then it all turns off again. Can anybody please help.
I have a HP Pavilion. when i turn it on, it shows the HP Splash and goes to the Windows Xp loading screen for about 2 seconds, then it bluescreens and restarts. It goes into an infinate loop. I am wondering if this is a Hard Drive issue? I have tried to reinstall windows with no luck.
The power LED stays on or it goes off too?
It’s possible. Enter the bios and check out if you can test the hard drive in there. Some HP laptops come with hard drive test utility in the BIOS.
If you don’t have it in the BIOS, you can download and run Hitachi’s drive fitness test. You’ll find link to this utility in Resources on the right side.
Thanks for the response Jay. Unfortunately, I cannot enter the bios as the laptop only sounds like it is going to start then dies again. I have tried removing the major parts like memory, HD, cpu and none of these make any difference.
My Toshiba M35X-s149 takes too long to start.
I plug it in, LEDs light up, I push the power button and light comes on, fan comes on, blank screen and then wait for a long time. Eventually it boots properly. It is all a matter of time. Several minutes, 5, 10…
Once it starts everything is ok and I can even restart windows. I just cannot turn it off.
What if you remove the hard drive and try turning it on without the hard drive installed. Does it still take a few minutes to boot the laptop to the toshiba logo or it appears right away?
Run hard drive and memory test. Hitachi’s DFT for the hard drive and Memtest86+ for memory. Find out if you have failing hardware. Links to both utilities are on the right side of the website.
This could be a situation 4 with a slight variation. My laptop Aspire 5583 refuses to boot. When I turn on my laptop, there seems to be some fan activity but no screen or HD activity (the HD LED lights up for a few seconds then stops). Additionally, when everything is off, I still hear something running inside the machine which stops only when I take the battery out. Tried connecting it to an external monitor but it’s not receiving any input from my laptop.
I have a HP ZV5000 laptop that is totally dead. It was working perfectly except for the dc power jack was loose and when I replaced it the only function that it had was the battery charge lcd light blinked 3 times. There was no other action on the laptop. I reseated the memory, no help I then removed the cd/dvd drive, hard drive, and still no help. The battery is totally dead. Before this started if the laptop ran down under 20 percent remaining battery it was a real problem to get it to recharge back., but after wiggling the power cord it would take a charge and continue to work. I have no way to charge the battery and was wondering if anyone had tried to driect charge the battery using the contacts on the battery. This is the only other option I can think off other than replacing the motherboard and I haven’t seen one under 250-300 bucks. Iwould just like to be sure before I spend that much or more likely trash the laptop. ANY help would be appreciated
Did you replace the power jack yourself or you took the laptop to a repair shop?
If the laptop worked fine before the power jack replacement but not after, apparently you didn’t do a good job. Remove the motherboard again and examine the power jack, make sure there is no shorts between solder joints.
Unfortunately, there is no way I can troubleshoot this laptop without looking at it.
You can minimize the system to bare minimum – motherboard, CPU and memory. If these three parts are good, you should be able to start the laptop with an external monitor.
If the laptop is still dead, even after you minimized it, one of the above mentioned parts is bad.
I replaced the power jack myself. I had done some before with sucess but I’m going to re-do it and try it again from the bare bone start when I’m done. Thanks so much for your help.
Pls I got compaq amada p3 I change d hard disk since then it developed problem it always switch off while loading operating syst
Make sure the heatsink is clean and not clogged with dust. It’s possible the laptop shuts down because of overheating.
I have a Dell Inspiron 600m with a situation similar to:
When you plug the AC adapter the power LED and the battery charge LED light up. When you press on the power button the laptop will not start and you cannot hear any activity from the hard drive, cooling fan and the DVD drive.
I’ve tried both suggestions but have had no luck. Fried motherboard? Any further suggestions?
This all came about after the battery ran down to the warning level during normal use and everything shut off abruptly when it tried to shut down properly. The battery still charged back up and all indications were that things were ok until I tried to turn it on minutes later. The only reaction to the power button being pushed are the lights that normally kick on during startup. This lasts for 1-2 seconds and nothing else happens. If there are any other helpful details, please let me know.
Suraj, we appear to have the same problem. Let me know if you get any good help from anywhere.
Hi i need help fast. Please help me
I have toshiba stelite m70-122 and i have it 2 years and everything it was ok. Today when i work and put on power supply its turn off. After that when i thorn on it show me that the message
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
I fix that and go on. when i need again power supply its thorn off and now is dead LEDs (power light, hard drive light, battery charge light, etc…) do not light up and the laptop is not reacting at all if i press on the power button.
P.S. sorry for my bead English and pls help me(its not mine 🙁 )
Did you test the power supply with a voltmeter? Maybe the power supply is not providing correct voltage?
I have a 3 years old ++ BENQ laptop (Joybook 2000E). I accidentally tripped over my AC adaptor, and my laptop completely turn off.
When i try to turn it back on, the only things that run is the cooling fan and DVD drive. Hard disk drive doesn’t run and the LCD screen is black. I tried to output it to an external monitor but no video as well.
What might be the problem? I tried the memory module method but it doesn’t work
Hello, I am about to give up on my Toshiba Satellite M35X-S149… A couple of days ago I tried turning it on and got nothing but a black screen. I thought that my screen died on me since the button’s blue light was on and all my led lights are on. But the fan only turns on for a few seconds and after several tries to turn it on it did boot up. It worked fine for hours like nothing was wrong. When I rebooted again the next day I had the same problem. Now it won’t boot up at all and when it does it shuts off before everything loads. Should I just give up on it? —–typing this on my Nintendo DS so ignore the typos. Thanks for any help.
Memory is the first thing to test, could be faulty memory module. Try reseating it as I mentioned in the situation 2.
I’m working right now on a Toshiba Sallite Pro 6100 (manufactured in 2003). I have all-around two-decades of experience in the field of electronics (EE) and troubleshooting, however; right now I’m facing a really weird problem that is frustrating as hell. Any sort of assistance is much appreciated. Oh and by the way, your website is really helpful — keep it up, you’re doing a great job.
The laptop was brought to me because its CMOS battery was undercharged and as a result, the BIOS couldn’t hold the user-set values including the system clocks and such. Other than these, the laptop was in working condition. As soon as I’ve heard the symptoms of the problem I predicted that it’s a low battery. I’ve placed the laptop on my workbench and half-disassembled (did not take out the system board, CPU, and such because my goal was to only reach the CMOS battery) the notebook, ultimately I’ve located the battery and measured it with my multimeter. Indeed, it was barely showing off 300mV instead of 3V.
OK, I’ve taken out the battery, recharged, and placed it back in its place. I’ve assembled the laptop totally and when I pushed the “power” button, nothing happened. I was like – ‘what the heck?’ Hmm. The AC adapter LED lights up, so the circuitry gets powered up until that stage. At least I knew there’s nothing wrong the power jack. I thought I’ve made a mistake when I’ve assembled the notebook so I’ve taken apart again, totally and completely, and tried to power on – still nothing.
Then I’ve followed the approach of narrowing down the problems by minimizing the components (disconnected and taken out the HDD, wireless card, DVD-ROM, LCD screen, even the sound card, etc.) and still it didn’t show _any_ sign of aliveness. I’ve taken out the CMOS battery, re-seated, still nothing. I was becoming frustrated and I’ve measured the power on switch – its condition was fine.
As a last resort, I’ve totally disassembled the laptop. Of course, I’ve also considered the anti-ESD protections. Once I’ve taken out and thoroughly examined each little section of the system board, even with a magnifying glass, I haven’t noticed anything “weird.” So I’ve connected together the necessary components, once again, to create a bare-bone notebook only with the system board, CPU, memory module (it has only one), and the cooler. This setup was on an anti-static conductive material. I’ve hooked up to the AC adapter, the LED lights up, but pushing the “power” button is still worthless; it does nothing, shows no signs of being alive. Nada. Nothing. Zero.
I’ve cleaned the contacts of the memory modules (isopropyl alcohol). I’ve tried reseating at the another slot – nothing changed. I’ve tried reseating everything, every little connector and cable starting from the LCD screen to wireless antenna, anything that I could find – still nothing changed. I was running out of ideas, as you can imagine, so out of frustration I’ve taken my trusty multimeter and was starting to measure the resistances between components, but the system board was grounded (you know, those metalic rings underneath the screw holes).
At this point I have absolutely no idea on what to do anymore, what to try, etc. Like I said earlier, any kind of guidance or assistance is much appreciated. I’m curious what would you try if you were in my place. This scenario is pretty weird, especially since the laptop was in working condition and I have done nothing to it than disassembling it with care, taking out the CMOS battery (first I’ve disconnected its 2-pin connector and then taken out the whole battery with connector and cable), recharged, and assembled it again. From this point, no matter what I did, how many times, the laptop couldn’t be brought to life again. I wonder what happened… and how could I ressurect this system board, if possible, because due to all of the aforementioned, it’s pretty much nothing but the system board, though, everything can be.
Thanks in advance and I look forward to reading your knowledgeable and professional answer. Have a great week. 🙂
My lovely daughter was takiing my laptop out of the car in the rain ( in it’s case ) , and sat it on the ground ( claims she didn’t drop it )!
After 30 minutes i was able to get it to boot, It didn’t get wet, I was able to use it that day, but i hae not been able to get it to boot since. I get the microsoft screen with the hourglass telling me to wait but, after about 15 minutes i get a totally black screen with a cursor at the top right hand side of the screen and that’s it!
I have an HP Pavillion dv2000, thats almost a year old. Just yesterday I went to turn on the laptop and it seems that the hard drive tries to boot for about 3 seconds, then stops, the fan is running, the power light is on, as well as the charging light (if plugged in) but not the hard drive light… (there are 3 blue lights in the front to display these three things) Also, all of the media buttons above the keyboard are lightin up but the screen never comes on, and I dont think it ever boots at all.
Now I did recently, about a month ago, upgrade my RAM and installed a 1 gig chip that I bought from best buy (taking out the orignal 512… it came with two seperate 512’s, and now has the 1 gig and the 512.) I know that is has been stated to try to remove the new memory, which I will surely try as soon as I get home. If this does solve the problem, am I to just accept that my machine has to run on the slow 1 gig of RAM that it came with?) And more importantly, if it doesnt work, what am I to do??? I kinda remember this similar situation happening a few weeks back, but I just left it on without being plugged in until the battery died, then pluged it in and booted and it worked. But this time, I have tried that like 20 times, and I am getting sadder and sadder and going through laptop withdrawl. Thanks for the help, this site is really cool.
Sorry for a late response, I was busy.
Man, I wouldn’t touch a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 with a 10-foot pole. A few years ago we had a customer with hundreds of these units and working on them was a nightmare. You take it apart and it never starts again. 🙂
First of all, the laptop couldn’t hold the user-set values including the system clocks and such and you would think that the CMOS (RTC) battery has to be replaced, but replacing this battery doesn’t help.
We think that all these startup problems, including the CMOS battery issue, are related to poor connectors between motherboard, power board, VGA board. Witch of them are failing? I don’t know. When we were “fixing” these laptop we just kept replacing all these parts until we find a good working combinations.
What you can do is try reseating all these parts and make sure they all making good connection between each other.
First of all, try swapping memory. It looks like you have a few different modules to paly with, try installing them one by one into different slots. Try this first.
I am no a computer technician but I am familiar taking electronics apart, putting them together and still work.
My problem is with an Acer Travelmate 620.
The laptop would not start without the AC adaptor. It did 4 short beeps during post the led light comes up and it shuts down again.
If I start it with the AC adaptor then the laptop starts even though I pull out the AC power right the next second after I press the Power button.
I assumed it was the battery even though it lasted for an hour if I started the laptop with the AC.
So I got a new battery but the problem remains, 4 short beeps and it shuts down.
According to the service manual this message means “Battery Critical Low” but the new battery last for almost 3 hours after I use the AC adaptor to start up.
Is there a chance this message to refer to the RTS battery?
Although the time and other information stays on time and order.
Could it be a sensor that gone bad and wrongly reports “battery low” during the first second of startup?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I don’t think that this problem is related to the RTC (CMOS) battery because the system time stays the same and doesn’t reset to defaults.
To me it sounds like a possible problem with the motherboard. Take a look at the battery contacts on the motherboard, make sure they are clean. Check the BIOS version and update it to the latest version if needed, it may help.
Try discharging the battery. Run the laptop with the AC adapter unplugged until the battery dies and then plug it in and recharge the battery.
I have a thinkpad t31 which turns on but doesnt boot up at all. I can hear the fan turning on but thats about it. Nothing happens after that. No screen, nothing. However, the computer stays on plus the fan doesnt stop running. Sometimes (very rarely), it does bootup and comes in fully working condition but freezes after a few hours with a wierd message that ‘your computer has been turned off, if this is a first time you are seeing this message try rebooting it if it happened before try removing un necessary hardware and software and reboot again. If, i try rebooting it sometimes it does reboot and somtimes the same problem occurs as discussed above. Can anyone please help? thanks soo much
I am Having A prob. With My Hp compaq Nx6110.It was Given to Me as A gift,it worked fine until nov.2007, since then i have tired very thing.the lights come on when i plug it in to a/c then the amber lights blinks 8 times. does not boot to post.alson the battry does not work it was fully charged at the time.i got it to work later in dec. of 2007 by pushing down near the battry slot on the motherborad.but now that stoped working to. any sugg. is help full…..to think i went to school for this.maybe i need to go back…..thanks
I have a compaq laptop which starts to boot into windows but fails, displaying the message “Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this problem”. It then gives three options to choose from for starting it: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Commande Prompt. I have used all three modes to no avail. In each occasion it asks for the use of the Recovery Disk which I used but then it would only allow a full reinstall which wipes away most of my files and files. How can I fix this problem without losing my files? Thanks
Try solution number 2. There is a chance that your laptop has bad memory.
Check out the maintenance and service guide. I think it may have a translation for this error message.
I think you’ll have to try reinstalling the operating system from the recovery disc. You can back up all personal files using an external USB enclosure for notebook hard drives, it’s not expensive. You can find it online for about $15.
Backup files and reinstall software.
I tried your suggestions, twice just in case, but it did not help.
Appreciate your help and thanks for your time.
Could it be the CMOS battery? or is this just the same as RTS battery?
I tried to find the error message explanation in the service manual and looks like you are right, it says:
Battery critical LOW
In this situation BIOS will issue 4 short beeps then shut down
system, no message will show.
I don’t think that the manual refers to the RTC (CMOS) battery. Because if there is an error code related to the CMOS battery, it says SMOS battery, not just battery.
RTC battery=CMOS battery
Aha, ok thanks for the clarification 🙂
I guess I’ll just let it be.
I have a sony vgn s1xp(similar to 360), which does not power up at all, no lights.
It fits scenario no 1. I have checked the voltage from adapter and it’s correct. I think it must be the motherboard. Something must be fried. Could anybody help me to locate the fried part or give me a schematic of the motherboard. Replacement of motherboard isn’t worth it (350-400$)
I have a Toshiba Satellite A55. I was having problems with the AC adapter supplying power, which meant either the adapter was bad or the power supply socket connection was faulty. Since it was late, I decided to take apart the laptop and check the power connection. After disassembling it, the power socket looked ok. I put back together and got a new ac adapter. I plugged the new adapter in and the charge lights on the front of the machine work, but absolutely nothing happens when I hit the power button (no sound, no nothing). I’m afraid I may have knocked something around during my disassembly/reassembly. Is there one or two things I should look at to solve this issue? I have already tried going back through the machine and looking for disconnected cables. However, it looks pretty set. Thanks for your help!!
In order to boot a laptop with video on internal or external monitor, you need three major parts: motherboard, CPU and memory.
Check the memory module first, make sure it’s seated correctly, try reconnecting the module or even move it into the empty slot.
If for some reason you removed the CPU, make sure it’s seated properly and the CPU socket on the motherboard is locked.
You can assemble a barebone system: system board, CPU (with heatsink and fan) and memory and then connect an external monitor. If all three main parts are fine, you should be able to boot this system and get at least Toshiba logo on the screen.
I believe in this model the power button is not on the motherboard, it’s on a separate board witch is connected to the motherboard via flat ribbon cable. Make sure this cable is properly connected to the motherboard and the connector is locked. Loose connection between this board and motherboard can be your problem.
Hello, I have a dell inspiron 5150 and doesnt turn on, just power for a few seconds and then it shut off, nothing shows on the screen. any help
Hello, I have a dell inspiron 5150 and doesnt turn on, just power for a few seconds and then it shut off, nothing shows on the screen. I noticed that when hit the on botton a lock with the later A blinks for a few seconds
If it’s a power adapter you need, I suggest these guys, they’re grreat! Way cheaper than going to the manufacturer. 12V Power Supply
Hi laptop does not get started, once we press power button , screen display nothing
Hi, i have a Dell Inspiron 1525, only had it 2 months and its suddenly conked out on me!
When i start it it recommends startup repai i click that it goes on for like an hour then brings up a blue screen sayin random stuff about hardware or programmes which may have caused the failure.
It recommends pressin f8, i have tried every option on f8, nothing helps i have inserted teh re installation vista dick too, really peeved as i need to finish my dissertation for uni, dont know what to so, somebody help please!!!!!
hey sam same thing happened to me… its not fun. and now it wont even start up
I have a Sony Vaio (VGN-FS600 series) which was working beautifully (it’s definately not software related) when one day while I was on the laptop it turned it’s self off without warning. I thought I had somehow unplugged it and not noticed it was running on battery power (since I turned off the “sleep mode at 5 percent battery power” option a while back to help fully discharge my battery before I recharged it to promote battery life) because it felt almost exactly like when it turns off because the battery dies.
I checked the adaptor, realized it was indeed plugged in, lifted it up and felt the underside, it was warm but not ungodly hot and certainly not the warmest I’d felt it in the past, and just pulled the cord out and popped it back in, and pressed the on button. The laptop lights (charging battery, etc) did not turn on, the laptop did not turn on, and I heard an extremely brief and faint clicking or popping sound repeated a few times before stopping. I pressed the on button again, nothing. I unplugged the cord, reseated it and jiggled it a bit to make sure it wasn’t a loose connection at a wrong angle, then pressed the on button, and again the faint clicking/popping sound about 4-5 times but otherwise nothing. No activity of any kind including the lights. I don’t -think- it’s the laptop cord, as the cord’s brick is still lit up when plugged in, and I’d rather not go shell out the money to buy a universal laptop cord while I have the option to find out if it is a different problem.
Does this sound like an power cord problem or a motherboard problem?
Did you notice if the popping sound was coming from the power adapter or from the laptop itself?
Unfortunately, you cannot tell until you test the laptop with another working power adapter. At least, you can test the adapter with a voltmeter and find out it it outputs correct voltage.
Try this. Unplug the adapter, remove the battery. Wait for a few minutes then plug the power adapter and try turning the laptop on again. I had a similar problem with my Sony laptop in the past (only without popping sound) and removing adapter/unplugging the battery helped.
Also, try this. You mentioned a popping sound and It’s possible this sound comes from the hard drive. Try removing the hard drive and starting the laptop without it. In some cases a faulty hard drive might halt the whole system from booting. Can you boot the laptop with video when the hard drive is removed?
I have problem with satellite a135, when i turn it on, everything goes normal until few momment and hang, i try to disconnect, modem, wifi module, harddisk and dvd drive, and then try to start again. it look booting in few momment and then hang again. what wrong with this laptop?
Working on dc jack Compaq V2000, the voltage is on& off from output of jack going into board, I still think one side of the jack is internally defect.
When it is running, is the fan supposed to come right on? I left the fan assembly on, I can still desolder it that way without taking it all apart, is the fan supposed to come right on once the voltage reaches the board?
Also, does the graphics card need to be in for it to get anykind of power? Dont know where the card is, fan does not even turn on.
I have an issue where my Dell 700M will not boot the OS. It powers on, boots the BIOS, then hangs at a black screen.
I have tried the power fixes, the result is the same, on battery, or power, with or without battery. I have tried removing the DVD drive and booting. I have removed the hard drive, and have connected it to another computer (via USB box), and the drive works fine.
I ran the Dell Diagnostics from the Boot menu (F12), which checks BIOS, CMOS, memory, and everything passed.
Anyone have any ideas as to what may be the issue?
Did you test memory modules? Could be memory related problem. If you have two memory modules installed, remove them one by one and test the laptop with each module separately.
Did you try reinstalling Windows?
First of all, did you test the AC adapter?
Did you try reinstalling Windows?
1.5 Yr Old Compaq V3000 suddenly restarted last night. Upon reboot the HDD light flashed briefly as if loading, but no post screen or OS boot and no HDD activity after those initial flashes. AC Power light on and appears to be working. I re-seated both 1GB sticks of RAM to each position and replaced in original slots with no result. Am getting a laptop SATA to USB to retrieve data off my HDD. In the meantime, any other ideas how on what to test?
Remove the hard drive. Try starting the laptop without the hard drive installed. Do you get video? Will it POST?
Test the laptop with an external monitor? Do you get external video?
I have a IBM T30 llaptop appears to be dead. When I plug the AC adapter, the Power Light LED light up, but the laptop could not react at all if I press on the power button.
Can you tell me what are the possible solutions?
The power button on IBM laptops is located on the keyboard. Maybe the power button is bad and the keyboard has to be replaced?
You can try reconnecting the keyboard first. Unplug it from the motherboard and then plug it back in. It’s possible the keyboard is not making good connecting with the motherboard and reconnecting the cable will fix your problem. Here’s service manual for ThinkPad T30, it explains how to disconnect and remove the keyboard.
If reconnecting or replacing the keyboard will not help, most likely you have a problem with the motherboard.
Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000 Laptop and I spilled Orange Juice all over the key board. I dried it off and have started to try and start it up again but when I press the power button nothing happens. There is the DC LED orange light that is blinking on and off. I have tried taking the battery out and plugging it into the outlet starting it that way but had no success. At one point the DC LED turned green and the battery LED turned orange but it would not start. Now it has gone back to the first orange blinking light. Can anybody help me?
my laptop starts up all the way to the log on screen, when i log on it doesnt open my desktop. the screen goes black and it opens my documents. i scanned it for viruses but nothing has showed up. Please Help
I have a Toshiba M50, Had viruses which I cleaned out, now my DVD drive is not recognized in device manager, my computer and Bios. Dvd lights up but wont read disk so I Can’t reinstall windows.
Please help with suggestions.
Dell Insperon 6000
press the stert button, power light comes on,
then a click and it goes dead
tried pulling battery and using only AC power, same result.
Tried replacing battery, which is fully charged and disconecting AC power, same result.
Try to boot in Safe Mode and then use Windows System Restore utility. Restore it back to the time when the laptop was working fine, it might help.
If you still have the same problem, back up all personal file and reinstall Windows from the recovery disc.
I don’t think this is related to viruses, sounds like a hardware failure.
Clean the optical lens inside the drive with cotton swab and alcohol. Try again.
You can try reseating the DVD drive. Just remove it from the laptop and then install back. It’s possible the connection between the drive and motherboard is loose. Reseating the drive may help.
Can you tell where does the “click” sound come from? Does that sound come from the hard drive, from the DVD drive or from the motherboard?
Remove the hard drive and DVD drive and try turning it on again. Can you start the laptop now?
Maybe that sound comes from the cooling fan because it’s blocked by something? Check the fan.
A Toshiba Satellite M55 does not start when I hit the power button. The left LCD at the front is on, which probably indicates that the power supply is working. Are there any known problems with this laptop? Sometimes, every now and then it starts up and works normal.
I have a Compaq Presario V3015NR that is about a year old. I am having some weird problems that are leading me to believe that it might be something with the power jack on the Ltop. I was on my Ltop and all of a sudden the screen freaked out and quickly showed lines all across it and then went black. Not to mention that my Ltop is a vegetable. It will show that the power is on but will not do anything else. It also will do something that I have never had any experience with what so ever. It will be off completely off, and if I touch my reload or refresh button at the top of the Ltop it will magically come back on. Weird Hugh? The reload/refresh button isn’t really a button it is one of those new static buttons where you just lightly have to touch it. But anyway, this is all pointing to a power problem if you ask me. Oh, and I should mention that when it comes back on it will be in its vegetable state. No picture, completely black and it will be on with the power lights all lit up but it wont function at all. Nothing, no hard drive no nothing. The cd/dvd drive will open but that’s it. I was just wondering if I could get some other opinions and ideas. This is all beneficial in fixing a problem like this. I will appreciate all of your insight…
I also forgot to mention that I have done some searching and found that Compaq has an update for the bios. It just so happens that this is suppose to fix some of the problems that are happening here. I just wish that I could have been forewarned about this earlier. I can’t access my bios at the moment and I’m going to guess that some of the others can’t either. This is a problem. I am trying my hardest to fix this but any help or insight will help. Thanks… Oh I don’t know if I mentioned this or not but I have a V3000 series Laptop.
My Laptop boots properly, Windows gets loaded but after that the scree is blank and the desktop doesnt appear. Also, all the lights are on but the keyboard doesnt seem to work
I have a IBM model:
here are my problem
My laptop can not boot when i plug the hard disk drive. even it can not go to cmos setting.
i removed the hard disk drive then i can go to cmos setting.
i think it has a problem with my hard disk drive. i replace with another one but problem can not solve.
please tell me how to solve this problem
My Toshiba m115 laptop suddenly stopped turning on. No LEDs light up. AC adapter seems to be OK. Could it be something easy to repair or most likely the motherboard is dead?
The power button on this laptop is located on a separate board – 7 button board on the right side of the laptop. There could be a problem with the power button and the board has to be replaced. I cannot tell you what is wrong with your laptop without testing it with another power button board.
Luke,I would check the memory module, could be memory related problem. Try reseating it.
I don’t think this problem is related to the power jack.
Toan Trung,If you installed another known good compatible hard drive into the laptop but still experience the same issue, apparently there is a problem with the motherboard. I don’t know what else could cause this failure. Probably there is something wrong with the hard drive controller witch is located on the motherboard. If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard.
Just in case, you can try reflashing the BIOS when the hard drive is removed. Reflash the BIOS, install the hard drive and test the laptop.
Test the laptop with an external monitor. If video on the external monitor goes blank too, it’s possible that you have a software related problem.
Can you boot in Safe Mode?
Did you test the AC adapter with a voltmeter? Are you sure it’s not the AC adapter?
1. Test AC adapter again.
2. Could be bad power jack.
3. Bad motherboard.
Mine is an HP Pavilion dv6312, I spelt water over the keyboard but the Laptop was turned off then, I left it to dry up for several houres and then I tryed to operate it but it turns on for about 2 seconds and then go off.. I tryed to replace the Ram and the battery but the problem still
Liquid spills are very unpredictable. Apparently water went down to the motherboard.
Unplug the power adapter, remove the battery and stop using the laptop, it’s may be not too late.
It’s necessary to disassemble the laptop at take a closer look at the motherboard.
hi, my daughters compac presario c300 laptop lost power ,turned back on it turns on but after a couple of seconds its off again put new battery in at first turned on put battery adaptor in switches itself off, tried again it then lost windows but will only stay on for a few seconds, will not now switch on at all with new battery fitted ,charge light flickers with new battery and only with adaptor connected, will only switch on with old battery fitted and with adaptor connected. cannot re-install windows as it switches itself off before completion, also tried a new adaptor, will not turn at all just using either battery without adaptor connected.would appreciate any suggestion what the problem may be. many thanks barry
To me this sounds like a problem with the motherboard.
my laptop is compac. I connet net but can’t connet & my laptop done hang & after 1 min. screen is off. And after my laptop donot stat done. pls solve my problem.
My Toshiba laptop when started shows the Toshiba startup screen…then goes to a screen saying that it couldn’t start properly and pick one of the ways to start…
i usually pick LAST GOOD CONFIGURATION, but I’ve tried them all and what happens is it goes through a list of drivers, then looks like it’s going to start but restarts itself and goes to the process all over again starting with the Toshiba Startup screen.
It isn’t out of battery and the cooling fan seems to be working.
Test the hard drive first. This could be related to the hard drive failure, maybe it’s going bad. Download and run Hitachi’s drive fitness test. If the hard drive passes the test, try reinstalling Windows. If the hard drive fails, replace it and then reinstall Windows.
my acer aspire 5610 used to hang a lot while running sharing programs. after a while, the lag started to spill over onto other programs like itunes and media player and it would snag on certain points of a song or video. the snags jus freeze up everything except the mouse, the laptop goes into a pause nd clicks every 5 seconds. the LED for the hard disk just stays lit up while it hangs. now it hangs for over 10 mins while starting windows. what’s wrong and what can i do to fix it?
hi i just got a toshiba satellite L25-S1217. it is used.i ordered a new power adapter for it, plugged it in and there is no reaction.no sounds lights etc. there is a battery attached.it will not power up with battery removed or not. i have no idea how long it sat with dead battery. does it have to sit with ac adapter plugged in to charge before it will work or should it work off the adapter immediately? thanks in advance for your help.
This sounds like the hard drive failure. You’ll have to replace the hard drive and reinstall OS with software.
I assume the power adapter is good. If you plug it into the laptop but the laptop is dead (no LED lights at all) there could be two problems:
1. The power jack is broken and the motherboard is not getting power from the AC adapter.
2. The motherboard is dead.
Normally it has to start working right away, as soon as you plug the AC adapter into the laptop and turn it on. It should work on AC power with or without the battery installed.
Long story short: Gateway m460 went into sleep mode, next day tried to boot up but power and module swap/access indicator flash on for about a second and powers back down, screen does not even display. Help?
This is not a reply but a request for help. I’ve got a Thinkpad T20 IBM. It was only booting in save mode. So I decided to reinstall windows xp. I’ve been trying to do it and every time I do I always have the sam problem. It reas the windows xp setup disk reinitializes de hard drive with ntf. Then reads the files. Then it stars goes through the process collecting information, dynamic update preparing installation and then it starts Installing windows when this happens it shows in the bottom installing Devices and it starts to fill the cell in the bottom with green until it reaches “Setup will complete in approximately 34 minutes. It always stops at the 34 minutes while installing the devices. Can you please help me with this. I created 3 diagnostics floppy and even bought a refurbished floppy drive, then took out the cd drive and installed the floppy and ran the diagnostics. Yet, I do not seem to see any problems there. Only it stops the windows installation at the installing devices when it is 34 minutes to complete. I am desperate as I do not know what else to do here. I will appreciate any suggestion.
Hah.. For those without extensive computer knowledge this guide benefits quite well. By the 5th situation I was able to fix my laptop. My laptop shut off and whenever I turned it on, it would not boot up or display any images. After removing the memory and re-inserting it, it started working.
Hi, was looking for some help. I have an HP laptop which will not start up. The laptop was running sitting at the desktop and I pushed the power button which sent it into standby as normal, now it will not turn back on. All the power lights com on and somtimes the dvd drive begins to power and the fan starts but only for a second or so and then it powers off again. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
i have an acer laptop the problem with my laptop is that the laptop is dead the battery indicator is working ie is shows that the battery is charged or empty when adapter is connected but when the power button is pressed the laptop does not switch on
Check the power adapter. It’s possible that the power adapter died while the laptop was in standby mode. The laptop turns on for a second and then turns off because the battery is discharged. I’ve seen this happening before.
Do you have power LED on the laptop? will it light up when you plug in the AC adapter?
Try this. Unplug the power adapter, remove the battery, waif for a few minutes. Try turning it on again.
Thanks for the response, The laptop does indeed have a power led which lights up with the ac adapter plugged in. My power adapter failed before and no lights were present unlike the current situation so I had kind on ruled that out. Curiously when a cd (any cs at all) is placed into the dvd drive and the drive also begins to spin up when attempting to start the laptop, it appears to try to read the disk for a while and stays on longer than without the disk in the drive. Wether or not the fan and the drive starts to spin seems to random with the lights all sometimes flicking on then off.
I am currently trying to get hold of a new adapter, any other ideas at all?
If the power LED lights up, probably there is nothing wrong with the adapter.
1. Unplug the adapter, remove the battery. Wait for a while and try turning it on again.
2. Remove the hard drive and start the laptop. Can you get video when the hard drive is removed?
3. Try reconnecting memory modules. If you have only one module, move it into the empty slot and try again.
Thanks but I have tried all that. Still get all the same results. Is it possible the problem lies with the circuit board which the power button is connected to ie. the button cannot send the correct message to come out of standby or maybe there is no power getting to the motherboard? overheating maybe?
I don’t think it’s overheating. Even if the heat sink is completely clogged with dust you should be able to turn on the laptop, at least for a short time.
If the laptop doesn’t react at all when you press the power button, there could be a problem with the button. But if the laptop turns on (you can hear HDD noise, DVD dive noise, etc…) them most likely it’s not related to the button.
You can try minimizing the system as much as you can. Remove hard drive, DVD drive, wireless card, modem, one of the memory modules (if you have two), etc… Try turning it on again. If the laptop turns on but will not start (no video on internal or external monitors) probably there is a problem with the motherboard.
When I booted my laptop today,
it ran into the “windows did not boot up normally” menu, i tried all the options and they all end up with the same problem: it goes to the windows booting screen, then a there is a blue flash (there is some text but it disappears too quickly) and then it restarts.
have any ideas?
hello guys and gals… i have a compaq x1000 i bought a new a/c adapter for it and it was workign fine til one day my son was using it and he was surfing the net and the lcd went blank but the power light and wifi light was on and i hooked up to an external monitor and nothing shows up.when you turn on the laptop u hear the fan spinning for a sec or 2 and then stop you think the video card as gone bad inside it?
i have a compaq presario m2010us and it wont start up at all. i plug in the ac adapter and it’s getting power, as displayed by the led, but i press the power button and i hear a click then absolutely nothing happens. help me please. thank you
1. Could be bad memory stick. You can run Memtest86+ utility to find if you have bad memory module.
2. Could be bad hard drive. You can test it with Hitachi’s drive fitness test or any other test.
3. Could be software related error. Try reinstalling the operating system from scratch.
First, I would check the memory module. Try reseating memory. If you have only one stick installed, move it into the empty slot (if you have any). If you have two modules, remove them one by one and test the laptop with each module separately.
Also try this. Unplug power, remove battery, wait for a few minutes. Plug in the adapter and test the laptop.
As I mentioned in the previous comment, it could be memory related problem. Try reseating or replacing memory with another known good module.
My Laptop boots properly, Windows gets loaded but after that the desktop doesn’t appear no start menu, only screen saver appear.
quick response pls….
Try this. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL keys, it will open Windows Task Manager. Go to File – New Task (Run..) and type explorer.exe then press OK. It should bring your desktop back.
My T41 does not power up and does not start when I press the Power Button. The battery is charging and it turns from “orange” to “green” light on the battery indicator during and after charging. AC adapter works good also, I have tried using it on my older T23 laptop.
I have removed both power source frommy T41, AC adapter and battery. I put back the battery again to the laptop and then press the power button but still it does not power up, but I noticed that the battery light up but for a very very very short time only. I have done this repeatedly and did get same response only…a short light on the battery indicator and laptop does not power up.
I now remove the battery and use the adaptor instead. Upon inserting the jack at the back of the laptop, a short light on the battery was also observed. I pressed the power button but still the laptop won’t power up. I removed the power adapter and insert again….I still get the same response.
The memory is good…i have already tested it to a friend’s laptop and it works fine. I have tried to re-seat the mem on the T41…still no good.
What could be the problem?
Could it be the motherboard or CPU?
How do I know? Any suggestions?
I got a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo series, I removed the battery and used with AC power only. Accidentally, the cable was unplugged. I tried to turn on again, the power turns on but it not booting and the screen remains black. Yet, i can see that the laptop react (LED lights run twice then off) everytime i turn it on. What is the problem? Is it dead? Please help or does any trick can be done?
My adapter is in poor quanlity like the power will not on unless the cable is extended or I always turns in side by side or up & down till i get the lights on.
my ibm tinkpad laptop is dead when i press power button it gives a small green flash then off. but the battery light is working correctly. please help me to manage this problem.
We have a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop, and it will boot up the Windows page will come up, but then go blank and will not boot into Windows XP.
Any ideas for what could be wrong?
DJ (post 181),
The power button on your IBM laptop is located on the keyboard. It’s possible that there is a problem with the power button/keyboard. Try reconnecting the keyboard cable on the motherboard.
If the laptop turns on but there is nothing on the screen (internal or external) the first thing to check would be the memory module. Try reconnecting the memory module, move it to the empty slot or replace with another known good module.
1. Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery. Wait for a couple of minutes, plug in the power adapter and try turning it on again.
2. Make sure the power adapter outputs correct voltage. You can test it with a voltmeter.
3. Minimize the laptop as much as you can. Remove the battery, hard drive, DVD drive. Try turning it on again. If you still have the same problem, it could be bad motherboard.
You can try this. Turn on the laptop and as soon as Dell logo appears on the screen press F8. It should bring you to the screen with a few different options.
1. Try Last Known Good Configuration.
2. Try Safe Mode. In Safe Mode you can try using Windows System Restore utility and restore the system to the previous restore point.
What would you think on a VAIO that will not boot, when press power button, all LED light briefly but not remain, nor fan neither other sound in laptop. I minimized the laptop, all the devices work well in other: mems, HDD, so I think is: power plug, mainboard processor. I could access to processor, doesnt look burned.
Please, help me with advice
Did you test the power supply? Could be bad DC adapter I guess. You can test your adapter with a voltmeter.
I had tried all of what you mentioned to no avail, but then I found that the pin that turns the monitor on and off had gotten stuck down, so problem solved!
The solution for situation 2 worked brilliantly for me. Thanks a lot for the help 😀
We have a gateway laptop. When we try to turn it on, the fan starts running, but nothing else happens. I have taken out the memory, disc and dvd drives and have reinserted them to no avail. The unit is supposed to turn off when the lid is closed, but the fan continues to run. If I shut it off by pushing the power button, the fan will stop running. The a/c power supply and battery seem fine. Any suggestions?
Could be BAD memory module. Try replacing it with a known good one.
My Compaq V5000 will boot but the problem is it will randomly freeze I deleted unneed material but when I hit one of my short cuts or hit the start menu my comoputer freezes, does any one have any ideas?
Recently had a case where the power light indicating the adapter was powering laptop would stay on until you hit the power button and light would go out and nothing would happen…
Found out that the laptop hard drive was not connecting correctly therefore causing the power issue.. Perhaps a short?
Thank you 1000 times n_n You are my hero~
how do you take gateway laptop apart?
I need to fix power ac pin on back.
i am having the problem,. where i turn on the laptop, i hear no sign of booting up, the power light i on but nothing on the monitor. the fan works, and i was wondering if i open it to check the memory slot, and that doesn’t work and i send it back, did i void the warranty?
If possible please help, thanks alot. When pressing the power button, my computer shows the windows schreen, then immediatley goes to a black screen with nothing on it (except a dash at the top left hand corner for a few seconds). I tried to insert a CD (XP) and the message “Please press any key to boot from CD..” appears. The computer does not respond after pressing “any key”. I am only able to enter the BIOS but I am not sure what to do with the BIOS.
Thanks a lot in advance
Ron, I have the same problem. Did you find a solution?
i have a dell Latitude C600/500 and when i press the power button the scroll lock caps lock and num lock lights come on.. and the power light and HDD light come on… and then about 10 seconds later they flash and it just keeps repeating it untill i unplug the battery…
nothing is dispayed on the screen..
a reply would be greatly appreciated…
Alright, my laptop, (i have a HP Pavilian) wont show anything. I turn the power on and the usual lights turn on and everything but there is no screen at all. I have tried numerous times to restart it and click it on and off and wait for a while before i start it off again but it just wont budge. I am 14 years old and i got my laptop last year for Christmas and i do not want to loose it. I am hopeing you can tell me what to do or links and places i can take it to repair it. Please help me, i dont want to loose her.
I think you have a serious problem with the laptop. I hope I’m wrong.
Try simple stuff first. Reconnect the memory module, try turning it on with the hard dive and DVD drive removed, try reconnecting the keyboard.
If nothing helps and the laptop still fails, there could be a problem with the motherboard.
So it’s not even one year old? I assume your laptop is still covered by the HP warranty. You can send your laptop to HP for repair.

i had purchased my lenovo laptop in month of Aug 08. now i am facing problem in switching on my laptop. it generally get started only after 20-30 minutes inserting ac power.
Have a Medion Laptop that will not start.

My friend’s laptop has been refusing to start up properly… It opens up and lights up, the mouse appears but the screen stays blank (black) and windows refuses to ‘appear’ or boot in.
i have a new hp and when i updated the windows vista and restarted . it looks like it going to start up and you will see the f2,f10 option then in the left upper corner you see an underscore flashing and that all it does. i hate to send it to hp and have to wait for a while to get it back. i dont know what to do . thank you
aftre on my laptop it working properly.but after 15 to 20 min it is automatically switch off. plz help me.thank you..
Apparently your laptop shuts down because it overheats. Most likely the cooling module (heat sink and fan) is clogged with dust and has to be cleaned. Check out this post with more information regarding overheating:
Why my laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without warning?
This problem could be related to your hard drive. I would suggest sending the laptop to HP.
i Have one laptop it start but it didnot show on screen
My laptop doesnt make any sign of life. Not with adapter in it or not.
When I press the powerbutton the powerlight flash 8 times, then nothing. (could be 7 times, hard to keep up the counting :P)
Test your laptop with an external monitor. If both internal and external video do not work, check the memory module. Could be bad memory.
1. Check the memory module. If you have two modules installed, remove them one by one and test the laptop with each memory module separately. One of them could be bad.
2. If it’s not memory, the problem could be related to the system board.
I have a HP Presario F500
With both the power cord plugged in and the battery in
when I press the button it lights up then immediately goes off
with either just the battery or just the cord
when I press the button it lights up, I hear the fan kick on and then back off, the power light stays lit for about 30 seconds then turns off and the laptop gives another quick flash and turns off. The bios screen never comes up at all, or at least the screen never lights up. any ideas?
Most likely there is a problem with the system board. But just in case I would suggest reconnecting memory modules. If you have two modules installed, remove them one by one and test the laptop with each module separately.
This description sounds like a memory problem.
I have a hi-grade laptop but when I start it and the wireless light comes on it doesn’t boot.
hi i also have a hi-grade laptop and the same as edward when the wireless light comes on it will not come on and if i am lucky enough to get it on if i move it in any way it goes off straight away is it a folt with the hi-grade laptops and how can it be fixed.
Same problem with a friends HI-GRADE laptop, was dropped though… anyone else dropped thiers?
When we press on the power button, it stay on for a second then it goes off again, we tested the batary and the hard drive and both are working but the computer does not get turned on, what else should we do and what could be the problem?
My laptop start properly but when desktop appears it stop working.
I have the same problem as Hoda. My Acer aspire 5160 laptop stays on for a few seconds and dies after a while even when its perfectly plugged on. Sometimes it doesnt turn on at all. Any advice?
Hi I own an acer aspire5100. I removed a program call acer empowering technology from my drive and now when I turn it on the splash screen won’t appear. Due to this windows also won’t appear. I went to the manufacturer’s website to get instructions which I followed and still the problem remains.
Thanks a ton mate!
Thanks so much. You saved my laptop.
Dude, Situation 2 got us scratching our head for several hours on 2 different laptops!
Thank you so much!
My laptop will not boot properly. It sounds like the hard drive and fans start ok and then 10 seconds later it switches off and then it tries to restart itself and it does this repeatedly. At no tme is there any image on the screen.
The only way I can get it to start normally is by holding the on off button to shut down and then continue holding it for 10 seconds. Then I go for a restart and repeatedly push the F2 button. The laptop then asks me to choose the operating system and then starts normally.
hi, i have hi-grad laptop and i want repair my laptop ,i think the motherboard has problem because i ask my friend about it and he said the problem in the motherboard i want ask how can replacement with new one or repair the old one , please give my advice what can i do and all cost and what the price for repair and send me all thing by my email . thanks
I was wondering if you could help me please mate. I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo V5535.
It has suffered from liquid spillage and after careful inspection and a replacement power button, it is a little more alive.
When the battery is installed and the ac adapter is plugged in I will get a green “charge light” LED.
When I press the Power button, the power on LED lights up for a couple of seconds and then dies.
Obviously the board maybe dead, but I have got it to do more than it could previously and wondered if I can get it to work properly again!?
I hope you can get back to me mate. Cheers
Thanks so much!!! The power light on my Toshiba Satellite A85 laptop came on, but none of the other lights came on. I removed the battery, plugged it in and it came on. Is it ok to operate the laptop without the battery or will the insides get too dusty. I am so glad I found your site. Thanks for what you do!!!
I have an acer aspire 5570z laptop from last two months i m facing starting problem. after power on all LEDs are and fan also start to spin but nothing on display and could not open dvd drive also. if i keep laptop in power on condition after 30 min or some time one hour there is one sound like something going to attached and laptop start normal way.
sometimes after power on laptop start normally but after 10 min windows is going to be hang even crusher also not moving and i have only one option and that is power off
if somebody can suggest what is the wrong with mt laptop
I have a Dell Studio 15 laptop and I was surfing the net while running a scan on the computer. Suddenly I heard a loud noise like something popped and then my computer shut down and since then I am unable to restart it again. The battery is fully powered but when the adapter is plugged in the LED light does not come on. However when I leave the adapter plugged into an electrical outlet which I have changed several times, the light comes on for a few minutes and then comes off again. When I plug back the adapter into the laptop the light immediately comes off but the laptop is not coming on with the battery alone. what may be wrong?
Apparently one of the capacitors on the motherboard had blown up. It’s necessary to remove the top cover and take a closer look on the motherboard. Usually you can spot a damaged capacitor relatively easy.
The first think to check will be the RAM module.
Do you have two modules installed in the laptop? Try removing them one by one and starting the laptop with each module separately.
This problem also could be caused by a faulty memory module.
Yes, you can do that.
Apparently the liquid damaged the motherboard. You’ll have to remove the top cover and take a closer look at the motherboard.
i have a inspiron 6000(old..i know) but gf doesnt want a new one she wants this one..
so when i turn the power on everything seems to be going fine… couple of normal noises… then i get the first dell screen.. that loads, then nothing… screen is blank but all the lights are still on..
how can i fix this whithout losing everything on the hard drive.. im not very familiar with a laptop but im willing to try… anything will help…
Take a look at the hard drive LED. Is it flashing at all?
Try booting in Safe Mode. Press F8 when you see the Dell logo on the screen and select Safe Mode. Can you?
I have a hp laptop when you swich on it gives 1 long bleep then 2 short bleeps and will not boot up
First of all, check the memory. Do you have two memory modules installed into your laptop? Try removing them one by one. Test the laptop with each memory modules separately.
If the laptop fails with one module but work with the second one, the first module is defective and has to be replaced.
If the laptop fails with either memory module, most likely your problem is related to the motherboard or video card. In most laptops the video card is integrated into the motherboard. If it fails, you have to replace the motherboard.
Hi. Found this site doing a google search and found the exact information I needed to restart my wifes laptop. I was doing a complete recovery when right in the middle of it, it just powered down like I held the power button. Restarted and tried recovery again and it did the same thing. Third time and it stayed black. Your tip on removing the battery and ac power, then holding the power button for thirty seconds, waiting a couple of minutes…that did the trick.
First of all, this problem could be related to overheating. Take a look inside the cooling module and if it’s clogged with dust, try cleaning it with compressed air. Buy a can of compressed air and spray it inside the heat sink/fan assembly. Try running the restore again. Does it work now?
i have a fujitsu laptop L1010 which will not start up and sometimes it starts up and when it gets to the desktop page it hangs. i’ve tried starting it up in safe mode but it still hangs at the desktop page. what should i do??
That could be memory or hard drive related problem.
Do you know if your laptop has two memory modules installed? Can you easily access them? Try removing modules one by one and test the laptop with each module separately. If it works fine with one module but not with the other one, most likely the second memory module is bad and has to be replaced. If you have only one module installed try replacing it with another known good memory.
Listen for the hard drive sounds on start up. Does it make any repetitive clicking or grinding noise? If it does, it’s possible the hard drive is failing and has to be replaced. Find out which hard drive brand you have installed, download the hard drive testing utility from the manufacturer’s site and test the drive. If it fails the test, replace the drive.

I HAVE LAPTOP CALLED DELL C600 BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT AM TRIYING TO SWITCH ON BUT IT SHOWS NO RESULTS BUT LAST TIME IT WAS WORKING WELL IT SHOWS ME ONLY GREEN LIGHT FOR CHARNGING.
I have a vaio laptop it’s about two years old but I haven’t used it
in almost a year. now I’m trying to turn it on and there is yellow flashing
light when it’s plugged inbor on battery. when I press power the normal
green and blue lights go on and the hard drive starts spinning but only
for about two seconds tops then just shuts down. there I’d nothing on
the screen, my charger had been tested, I’ve tried removing the battery
and that for a few minutes and it doesn’t work. if you could tell me
what you think is wrong that would be great
thanks a lot
Hello, I Have HP laptop Pavilion 9094, few weeks ago my problem started, I mean when I press turn on button my laptop sometimes boot sometimes not, I remove battery – nothing, I cleared CMOS – nothing, Leds after turn on blink, hard disk works, fans work, but my screen is black, after few restarts it works correct, What is the porblem
Did you have a chance to test your laptop with an external monitor?
If the same happens with the external video (intermittent video), you problem could be related to the memory. Do you have two modules installed? Remove them one by one and test the laptop with each one separately. This way you can find a faulty memory module.
If the external video works all the time but the internal screen works only intermittently, take a closer look at the screen when it fails. Is it really black? Can you see a dim image on the screen?
Hello, I have tried today your tips but still the same, when I try the external display it’s still random boot or not, i have two modules of RAM, so I tryed first module ine first socket – still random, fisrt module in second socket – still randfom, second module in first socket – still random, second module in second socket – still random. I noticed today so my left hinge i very loose, has it anything to my problem??
If the laptop video fails on both internal and external screens and reseating/swapping memory modules doesn’t help, most likely you have a faulty motherboard.
I don’t think so.
This about a HP DV2000 series laptop. When the AC adapter plugged in, all the blue LEDs light up, no need to press the ON button. Ad nothing happens there after. I did try what I found on this page to no success. The peculiar thing in my case is that the power tuns on just by plugging in the AC adapter without having to press the ON button. Can you help. Many thanks
I have an AMILO Li 1705i ,now is black dead.Problems has started early with freeze desktop on more than 1h run on AC at end no boot at all, wi-fii led on ,power led on (green) fan run at full speed and no image (black screen)no POST screen.batery is ok tested on another AMILO Li AC is ok my friend was testing all of my laptop ,HDD is ok ,memory is ok an external video does not have image. At warranty ppl say video onboard chip (burned!!!) no chance to fix .
what means wi-fii led(green) on on eroors? Thanks.
If you replaced laptop memory with another known good memory and it didn’t fix the problem, most likely it’s bad motherboard. I guess the repair shop is correct.
You cannot replace the video chip, you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard.
I have a Toshiba old model. When the laptop is plugged the led for the adaptor is ok. When i press the power button the leds are flushing like a normal boot for a second and then they shut down. Without any result on the monitor, funs or anything.
I have a problem with my dell inspiron. I run windows XP. When i start my computer all i can see on my screen is my chosen wall paper, no start menu, toolbars or shortcuts. Hi, I have a Fujitsu Esprimo V5545 and I accidently pulled out the power cord while it was shutting down . It mad a beep sound and shut down . I took it to another rooom and tried to start it up but it seemed to be dead.I unplugged it and removed the battery then held the start button for 30 seconds , then plugged the power back in but to no avail, it still was dead I unplugged it and put the battery back in and it still wouldnt go. I then plugged the power back in and pressed the power button and the orange charging light came on only, and that is it. Now nothing happens when I power it and press the on button, thanks for any help as my son is going to be very upset ( it is his ).
Hi, I just put together a new MSI MS-171F Barebone laptop. Everything came installed except, the HDD,CPU,RAM,LAN and the OS. All the parts are new,and compatible.
I installed everything, put the notebook driver disk in the OD and booted it up. It powers up fine and you can hear the fan spinning. The OD lights up and spins. It does not post and only has a black screen. I tried reseating the 2x2GB sticks of RAM, nothing. Tried different slots running just one then removing both, nothing. Removed the HDD,no sound no picture, nothing.
Removed the fan and reseated the CPU,nothing. Ran briefly without the fan and the CPU heats up which would seem to indicate that the CPU is good.
I even tried hooking up an external monitor still no display or sound. Tried powering down, removing the battery and resetting the CMOS and still nothing.
There was no manual or troubleshooting guide with this laptop and I am at a loss as to what to try next.
Make sure the CPU is LOCKED in the socket. There should be a screw on the socket which locks/unlocks the CPU. Install the CPU and turn the screw into “Locked” position.
In order to start any laptop with video on internal or external monitor you need three major parts: motherboard, CPU and memory.
Minimize the laptop as much as you can and leave only three main components. Try it again. If still nothing, it’s possible one of the parts is bad.
Thank you very much for your advice…..
my acre 6920 just went dead and wouldnt strt up………it was getting the power but the hdd light went up fr a second and then dead…..
i took your simle advice and removed the battery and then switched it on…….and to my utter suprise………it came to life…….i booted in safe mode
the device manager showed ‘consumer ir device’ not working properly…..
i dont know what that means….
maybe it had something to do with acer arcade……as i was playing music on it while making a presentation when the music got stuck on one note and then the laptop froze…….so i had to shut it down forcefully…..
i am grateful as i have been able to save my prsentation now…..
Just to know things better……..what could have caused it?…….and how to prevent it from happenning?….
thanks very much anyway
I HAVE THIS MSI MS-171 LAPTOP, ITS A PAIN IN THE ASS. MAKE SURE YOU PUSH IN THE HARD DRIVE TOWARDS IN THE SATA SLOT AT THE SAME WHEN YOU ARE SCREWING IT IN. IF YOUR LEFT CLICK MOUSE BUTTON GETS STUCK IN THE DOWN POSITION REMOVE THE TWO FURTHEST HDD TRAY SCREWS. FOR SOME REASON THE HDD IS AT AN SLIGHT ANGLE SO WHEN YOU PUT THE HDD COVER ON IT PUSHES THE MOBO IN CAUSING THE MOUSE LEFT CLICK TO GET STUCK. PLAY WITH IT AND YOU SHOULD GET IT RIGHT.
I’M JUST CURIOUS HOW TO UPGRADE THE BIOS I FOLLOWED THE WEBSITES INSTRUCTIONS BUT THE BIOS WONT KICK OF THE SOFTWARE IN MY USB.
I have toshiba satellite M70-122 its not working its I have change the hard drive with other new one when I try to istall winxp it give me massage (no hard drive available) and in the piose setup its give me hard drive non please if you have any soluation about this issue
I have a dell inspiron 1420 laptop which is out of warranty and I dont wishh to have renew it.
Around 2 months back it started to have a display problem which was due to the faulty motherboard(UX283) with nvidia 8400 card. I got it replaced and as it was replaced i got indulged in a different problem.
Then the system started to get off (not shutdown) during boot only, giving an error code of #M1004 which is an overheating issue, but actually there is not as such any heating. The fan runs normally and the system is cool enough.
It may fail to boot 9 out of 10 times but once the OS get booted then it worked fine without any display problem.
But now the problem has changed slightly. Now it seems that the system may remain on for a fixed time say about 25 seconds. The system may get booted to OS or you may enter the BIOS etc within this time but once the period gets over it gets off. I mean the now the system can have power for only those few seconds.
I have got my motherboard, LCD as well as the memories replaced with new spares sent by the company. The motherboard has been replaced thrice.
I have also checked the processor, hard disk and heat sink with properly working spares from other laptop of same model.
What could be the probable problem ?
Is there any solution to the problem as with all the major parts working fine independently as i described or the system is irrepairable.
Please suggest me something useful.
I have 2 yr old Toshiba A135-S4527. When I press power the blue light on power button comes on alongwith the small power LED in the front. The fan spins for a while and goes dead. No activity on HDD or DVD. Dark black screen. Any clue what could be wrong? I used it previous night and turned off in normal way. Next evening when tried to switch on the problem was noticed. Already tried removing memory and HDD, putting on AC power only, removing battery and AC power and keepning aside for few hours. Nothing helped. Thanks in advance for any suggestion.
Could be bad memory. Have you tried removing memory modules ONE BY ONE? Remove memory one piece at a time and test the laptop with each module separately.
If it doesn’t help and the laptop fails to boot with either memory module, apparently your problem is related to the motherboard failure. You’ll have to replace the motherboard.
I have laptap hp compaq.when i was press start button it will showing in monitor resuming windows then chang to Log Off, still showing countinous. How do the repair the system.
I have a compaq laptop (Presario V3000). The problem is, when i start my laptop, it beep thrice and the screen goes blank. Now as suggested in help, i tried cleaning my RAM modules and i am sure they are working perfectly fine. Even after ensuring the RAM to be in perfect condition, I am still getting this same error.
Please if anyone has faced this irritating problem, help meee……
The battery/AC unplug works flawlessly. I accidently dropped my phone on my MSI-700X and it shutdown and refused to start (Not first time =[ ). I did step 2 (omitting the memory slot removal) and it started up instantly. Thank you so much for the new way of fixing this issue. Usually I had to wait a few hours for it to work.
Excellent point in here under Situation 2 that solved my immediate problem with my HP dv2410us not turning on.
Problem was: all top row LED lights under the screen turned on and stayed on at power-up. Nothing whatsoever on the screen. Other LED lights were not turning on or flashing (e.g. the error code ones by the Num Lock and Caps Lock. No ‘disk access’ light.
Tried but didn’t help: Removed all peripherals, (hard-) rebooted, nothing. Removed battery, (hard-) rebooted, nothing.
Fixed it by: Your battery trick. Removed battery AND the power cord for 5 minutes, reconnected power cord only, did not touch the on/off button, laptop powered up and booted successfully as normal.
Oddly enough: when I went for a graceful shutdown, Windows Update (for XP) started “installing update n of 10” saying it would shut down automatically. One wonders remotely if this is unrelated to my boot problem.
Now: I go back to trying it with the battery in after a graceful shutdown/reboot or two. Then I go into some further diagnostics after making sure all my important files are off of it.
The tip sounded simple and procedural, but I appreciate you making a point of mentioning the order of the battery/power cord procedure. Saved a lot of time for me as I had gotten out the screwdriver and was ready for some deeper work.
my Toshiba tecra laptop will not startup please help me
Thank you for helping me with my laptop power problem. I removed the battery for a few minutes and reinstalled. The laptop then worked as usual. I would not have thought of this without your suggestion.
By the way, the symptom of my laptop was that I had the battery LED turn On but not the Power LED. This occurs only when the AC adapter is connected otherwise, if the AC adapter is not connecting, no LEDs are ON. With the AC adapter connected, when pressing the Power button to start the laptop, nothing happens. You may want to include this case in your above “Situation 2”.
Thanks again for your help.
my toshiba satellite will not boot up. message says cannot start the programme. press start to shut down. it is windows vista.
Good morning,i have a problem with a toshiba satellite l20-132.after restarting it i pushed f2 to enter bios menù but pc just frooze.I tried turning it off keeping power button pushed but no luck.after putting out battery for some sec will not work.I just see blinking hdd and cdrom led,but no post.It seems like pc is turned on but no life.
I have a Dell D610 Laptop, and unfortunately it is not booting up. The LED light comes on, but thats all that occurs. I have removed the battery, and connected the AC adapter, and tried two or three other ones from another area, but it still does not work. I did also reseat the memory but still the same issue. Any advice? I did read through all these points, but none have worked.
“Situation 5 You start the laptop and it starts making repetitive clicking noise or grinding noise.”
That is the one that most resembles the issue I have EXCEPT it’s not the hard drive. The hard drive was replaced & it still does it. The clicking is the CD/DVD rom drive. Boot from CD/DVD rom drive has been overridden to bypass it, but it still does it. I’m thinking it’s time to replace the CD/DVD rom drive, but I’ve been looking for more verification on this issue before I do that.
Sounds like you have a bad CD/DVD drive and it has to be replaced.
Did you try replacing memory with anther known good modules? It’s possible your memory is bad.
Did you try removing memory modules one by one if you have two modules installed? Maybe one of them is bad.
Very good. I have a more complicated situation with my Toshiba Satellite M35X-S109 though. When I press the power button, I can only hear the fan run for several seconds, then usually no other response. Occasionally, the CD/DVD driver light up, at very rare times, even the Windows XP would turn up, it works perfectly fine if I entered the safe mode. however, at normal mode, it would freeze after a while, but recently it won’t freeze, only that when I turned off the computer, it would freeze at “The computer is shutting down” step. I will have to leave it on next time I turned up successfully. Any ideas what could be the problem? Thank you very much.
hi my laptop screen in broken but while waiting to fix this i have hooked up my laptop to my desktop screen now the laptop will only start in safe mode and not normal mode is there anyway i can change this thanks in advance.
Hi, my laptop is turning on but it is not starting. It’s a Dell Inspiron 1420. When turned on, the dell logo works fine but it just takes forever to boot up at the ‘microsoft corporation’ stage and if it does a blank black screen appears. HELP!!
I was doing a recovery to my windows vista and the power went down before it finished; now when I turn it on it does not boot up or nothing, I tried to start the recovery again but it does not read the CD. It starts the CD but it’s not bootable.
Enter the BIOS setup menu and set the optical CD/DVD drive as the first bootable device. Save settings and exit the BIOS setup menu.
Now insert the first recovery disc into the drive and restart the laptop.
It should start from the recovery disc.
Hi, i have a dell laptop ( the small one) and i press the power button and a light lights up then turns off. Also nothing happends when i close it and open it. When i hold the power button it lights up quickly on of on off. What should i do?
hii. my laptop stops functioning as soon as i put it on batteries. also it does not boot after i shut it down. it takes 4-5 hrs before it strts functioning again
What if you remove the battery and use the laptop on AC power. Does it fail when the battery is removed?
1. Maybe the AC adapter is bad and the battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the laptop. Test your laptop with another known good AC adapter.
2. Could be memory related problem. Do you have two memory modules installed? Try removing them one by one. Test the laptop with only one memory module in place. This way you can find the faulty memory module.
Please i have been trying to format my laptop for over 4 days now.If i boot from the cd,it will start installing windows normally until a point where i will get an error complaining that some files cannot be copied and i have bought about 5 different xp cd,s but the worse is the case.Right now if i try to start the pc with the xp cd inside,at the point where am asked to press any key to boot from cd and i dont do that, the next thing i see on the screen is ,NTLDR is missing, press Ctrl,Alt. and Delete keys to restart computer, but if i press any key to boot from cd,the system will be formatted but when it gets to copying files it will say,Thefile intelide.sys is corrupted
I have a Dell Inspiron 1721. Last night it shut off and I can’t get it to power back on.
The battery is charged, but the LED’s won’t even light up. If I plug the AC Adapator into the laptop (works fine – tested on another laptop) the light on the adaptor cord goes out and the adaptor needs to be unplugged to be reset. This happens with the battery installed or removed.
It seems like something is shorting out the power. Would this be the power supply? Can it be fixed at a reasonable price?
I have an HP pavilion dv2000 laptop. My laptop works just fine but I’m having problems with actually having it start. When I turn it on, it shows that it’s running but it just doesn’t finish booting. So I have to manually turn it off by holding the power button, and then have it re-start and have to do “repairs” because it was incorrectly shut-down. After it does the repairs it’ll start correctly. I don’t know what’s wrong with my laptop. Any ideas?
I thought this was a scam website. For 2 weeks I couldnt get my laptop to boot. I am so happy I read and got the information. Thank you so much I love you
i messed my laptop up last night and i could not get it to start. I found this website and did one of the suggestions and it booted up. This website saved me lots of time and money. I will recommend this to friends and everyone i know that has any problems with their laptop.
Thanks so very much!!!!
I have the Dell Inspiron Laptop, its 4 yrs old; it was running fine until yesterday night,
Yesterday I tried to turn it on, it booted and got frozen and left only grey screen, I waited for 20 min or so and then manually turn it off, then on I made series of attempts to turn on, all It gave me was a blinking light and whirring sound of hard disk for 10 sec and nothing happened, does anyone know how to solve this issue?? Please help.
hey i have a packard bell laptop but when i turn it on it loads and takes me to a “windows boot manager” and before the it would turn on and shut down by its self non stop, can you help me please
This problem could be related to the laptop memory failure. Run memory test. You can use Memtest86+ (google it).
If laptop fails memory test, try replacing memory module.
1. Could be failed memory module. Try replacing memory with a known good module.
2. Could be failed motherboard.
the problem with laptop is the power button itself. I have to press it really hard and it is becoming worse everyday. It is sinking in.
i have a lenovo laptop ,it was working very well until last night.i had the start up problem.whenever i pressed the start button it blinked and gone.I tried starting many times but in vain . can anyone please guide me what to do?
my hp dv 9000 has sound every now and then and it won’t start
windows vista and windows 7 both fresh installs same problem
when it hangs it won’t even boot in safe mode or from disc
I have tried every thing from new hard drive, ram, restore, fresh install of vista and windows 7, new cmos battery.
after i installed winsows 7 i had sound but lost it when it tried to update and locked up at logo screen. I also did start up repair I have all the right drivers I am sure! I think it is the mother board but not sure, so I ordered one and I just wanted to know if anyone had any other idea or if you also think this is a mother board.
It’s possible that you have a faulty motherboard and HP knows about this problem. They replace motherboards on some HP dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 notebook at no charge even if it’s out of warranty.
Maybe the power adapter is dead and battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the laptop? Test the power adapter, make sure it outputs correct voltage or test your laptop with another adapter.
It’s hard to tell what is gong on without looking inside the laptop.
If the power button is made of plastic, it’s possible the plastic piece contacting with the power button worn out.
I have an hp dv9000 laptop that started to act up yesterday. It began to get slow, and things would not open. I shutdown, then i turned it back on, but i got an error message, something to th effect of windows is not configured properly, or something about recently installed hardware/software, anyway it said to use some lauch repair thing. it would not do it until 5 or 10 shutdowns later. When i ran it, it said that it either found nothing, or there was a problem thact could not be fixed. So i shutdown again, then turned it on later and it worked. but again today, after checking email and using the internet for a few minutes, it started to act up- things slowed, would not close/open, it took forever to restart. after restart, i got the same message and was told to use launch repair thing. any ideas?
I think this could be software related problem or hard drive failure.
1. Back up all personal files and try reimaging the hard drive back to factory defaults from the recovery disc.
2. If reimaging the hard drive doesn’t help and the laptop still fails same way, it’s possible that you have a failing hard drive. Try replacing the hard drive and run recovery disc again.
I have a toshiba laptop satellite L510..And i got a !!!!! symbol in the start up column in System 32..Wat is it and how do i remove it??
hi there just the other day i turned on my lap and it started normaly but then it gets to a windows boot menu because i have diffrent operating systems so i enter windows vista home premium but nothing happens it just goes back to the boot menu can anybody help?
hi all!!i have a acer aspire 8530g and when i turn it on it wont boot ,the screen stais black the voltage led in on the leptop is on but doesn t boot, black screen(but doesn t doo this all the time ,from time to time)then i close it and turn it on but it works the second time,i must say that there are 2 video adapters inslalled on it one integrated and one stand alone a ati 3200 on it and a ati 4650 hd stand alone,i cant disamble the 3200,from bios it doesn t say anyting, thank you
It’s possible that you have a faulty memory module or it doesn’t make good contact with the motherboard.
1. Try reconnecting both memory modules.
2. Try removing memory modules one by one and test the laptop with each module separately.
From your description it’s hard to tell what’s going on with the laptop. This could be software or hardware related failure.
1. Test laptop memory and hard drive. You can find diagnostic test on the Ultimate boot CD.
2. If hard drive and memory pass test successfully, try reinstalling Windows from scratch.
i have a compaq presario v6000 laptop, the screen suddenly froze so i switched the machine off but when i tried to put it back on again it did not boot and the sreen remained blanck although the power lights are on.
I have an acer extensa 4620z laptop. When i press power button, my laptop does not start, but on continuously pressing button it starts sometime and then work normally. And it has also issue with its battery which was working fine untill last month, and its backup is suddenly reduced and at same time it has get this problem.
Situation 2 worked perfect for me. Thank you so much, I was worried for a second there. 🙂

I have a HP Pavillion dv9310ca laptop with Atlon CPU and Vista. I was using the laptop and all of a sudden the screen went black. Th AC was not hooked up so I hooked it up and since it shut down prematurely, I went into safe mode and tehn shut down. When I tried to start normally, the lights will come on and the fan starts up but then the speed of the fan decreases. Th eAC adapter works and teh correct volatge – already checked. Can it be the processor or the board?
I have an HP Pavillion dv2000 laptop with Vista and I used it for like a year and one day i used it for an hour and turned it off and in a few hours I turned it on and saw that it would not turn on. There is a light where you plug in the charger to indicate that it is charging properly and it is lit up but in a month I pressed the power button and there is a tiny little light in the left bottom corner that has a picture of a lighting bolt on top which flashed for a second but then it stopped. Then a few days later the tiny light was lit up the whole time when i plugged in the charger and I thought it was charging so i went to sleep and woke up and saw that the light was not shining anymore and my laptop still wasn’t turning on.
So, does any one have any clue what is going on with my laptop or have any suggestions of how to fix it?
When I plug the AC adapter the power LED is on but the battery charge LED don’tlight up. When you press on the power button the laptop powers up but will not start. There is no video on LCD or external monitor. I hear the noice of the fan for few seconds. That is it. I had pressed the FN+F8 to send the signal to tv and usually there is no video on the monitor when I do that. Once I removed the CDROM and put it back it worked only once. I can not even open the CDROM to put a bootup disk.
when i turn on my acer aspire 5520 the power button flashes but nothing comes on the screen and if you hold down the power button for 5 plus seconds it will not shut the computer down any ideas
Hello. I have a Dell Latitutude D610. The computer powers up, but after the DELL screen comes on, it goes straight to a blinking cursor in the upper left hand part of a blank screen. F8 doesn’t seem to work at all. Windows never boots up. Is this a hardware or virus issue. I believe I can hear the fan running, so the power and everything appears to be working just fine. It just won’t start Windows
i have a hp pavilion dv2000 and i was disabling some features on my start up for better perfonce and i think i disabled something very impotant and now my computer doesn’t boot anymore. The power lights are working but the screen is dead.
Anybody have suggestions? i would really appretiate.
Hi, I am having problems with my 2006 Gateway laptop…I know very little about computers so hopefully you can help me. When I go to turn my laptop on I have all the indicator lights light up, the fan sounds like it is starting to run like normal;then the indicator lights turn off and the fan shuts off; the power button remains on as does the indicator light for the battery as well as the ac power light. Nothing appears on the screen and all the indicator lights go off. I have taken the battery off let it sit a day, put it back in still nothing. I have taken the battery off plugged in the power ac adapter and still nothing.
First of all, I would check RAM modules. One of the modules could be bad. Try reconnecting them one by one. Test the laptop with each one separately.
If reseating/removing RAM modules doesn’t help, I guess you might have a problem with the motherboard.
hi i have tohsiba laptop.
the problem is it does not start without connecting to electricity.
no battery icon is shown in the taskbar
I have a Dell laptop.
When i start it up it comes to this black page with white font.
It says there’s a start up failure.
What should i do?
hi, my MSI notebook would start, but then it gives me options to choose, then it either gets all these weird codes or in turns blue for a second then starts over, can someone help me please
It’s hard to tell if the problem is software or hardware related without testing the laptop.
You can try reinstalling the operating system from scratch. There is a chance the laptop will be working fine after that.
If not, this is a hardware related problem.
There is a good chance that it’s either failed hard drive or bad memory (RAM). Run memory test (Memtest86+) and hard drive test (I usually use Hitachi’s drive fitness test). Find out which one is failing.
Listen for the hard drive sounds. Does it spin? Does it make clicking or grinding noise? Could be hard drive failure.
Also, could be software problem. Try reinstalling Windows from the recovery disc.
The laptop appears to be dead. I plug the AC adapter but the LEDs battery charge light, and ac power are on…when I press power button nothing happens it doesn’t power up or do anything, last time I was using it I try to put password (the bios password)more than 3 times and shut down by it self.
Kindly suggest Me i have the Notebook of Touchmate Model
i alway have to plug the power adaapter to my notebook where i travel this is becoming a big problem to me if else i dont connect the power adapter my laptop wont get on can any1 suggest me what is the route cause for my Laptop how to resolve it?
Hi, I may have a funny case: my laptop can boot and I can log in. But then it does not fully come up.
However, I can run Task Manager. You know, Task Manager can run programs. I can run cmd, notepad, mspaint, but not mmc (Event Viewer), not restore utility.
I switched memories around. Seems they are OK. Is this a software problem or more like a hardware problem? Thanks.
I have a Toshiba X205-S7483 that has stopped working almost entirely. I closed the screen expecting the computer to go to sleep as it usually does; when I returned the next morning the cooling fans were runnnig, but there was no other sign of life. I had to power down the computer by holding the power button.
Now, I turn on the computer (AC or battery) and get the power indication, AC light, and battery light. The hard drive light illuminates for about 3 seconds and goes out, and that is it – no video, nothing. I then have to hold the power button to get it to turn off. Suggestions?
1. Try removing memory modules one by one. Test the laptop with each module separately.
By the way, I believe if you are using only one module in a Satellite X205, it has to be installed into the outer slot. If you use only one memory module in the slot located closer to the motherboard, the laptop will give you an error message.
2. If you have same problem with either memory module (installed into the outer slot), it’s either bad motherboard or failed video card. I cannot tell which one is bad.
I have an HP nc8430 which had coffee spillled on it. The laptop starts up when you press the power button, turns the fan on and checks the DVD rom but does nothing more than that. It remains in this state unless the power button is pressed again. The screen does not come on. Please help!
There is no way I can tell what’s going on without taking a look inside the laptop. It’s possible that you damaged the motherboard.
You’ll have to remove the keyboard and take a look inside.
If you see any corrosion/damage on the motherboard, most likely it’s fried and has to be replaced.
Thank you so much very helpful website.
my compaq laptop doesnt start. when the power is turned on the power button lit for some second and turn offs. there is no fault of adapter and the battery. hope to get the proper solution as soon as possible.
MY HP PAVILION DV6605US NOTEBOOK WILL NOT START IN ANY WAY.THE POWER LED INDICATOR COMES IN FOR ABOUT 1MIN 15SEC THEN DISAPPEARS WHEN I PLUG THE AC CHARGER IN THE NOTEBOOK, I KNOW THAT THE BATTERY IS NOT GOOD SO ITS NOT THE BATTERY BECAUSE IT WOULD WORK OTHERWISE ,I HAVE TRIED ALMOST EVERY SUGGESTION THAT I HAVE SEEM SO FOR BUT THE ONE CONCLUSION I AM ABLE TO COME TO IS THAT THE MOTHERBOARD IS DEAD (R.I.P) THE LIGHT STAYS ON WHERE THE AC CHARGER CONNECTS TO THE NOTEBOOK BUT THE POWER SEEMS TO BE NOWHERE ELSE THE CHARGER IS OK BECAUSE IS CHECK THE VOLTAGE LEAVING IT THE THE NOTEBOOK AND THE VOLTAGE WAS CORRECT,. PLEASE HELP ME
I’ve been having a few problems with my laptop lately and I’m not sure what it is. It’s been starting to act up by not turning on immediately. After the laptop has been left off for a while, when you turn it on it won’t start up properly. The CD spins and the lights come on but it won’t boot and I can’t get to the bios screen. I though it was a hard drive error so formatted and re-installed windows, but the problem persists. After a while of turning it on and off again, it eventually turns on and runs perfectly.
My mum has a Dell laptop a few years old now and is having problems turing it on, lights will flash as though it is tuning on but once she has put in her password the welcome screen just stays there. Sometimes it takes 10 attempts to get it started. Then all of a sudden it will work normally and go from the welcome screen to the desktop. Anyone have any ideas as its just taken me 7 attempts to turn it on this morning!
This is the site i’ve been looking for. Thanks. Keep on posting new guidance.
My laptop is Compaq Presario V3000 start only a few second and stop .
Fan also stop
Help me Please
Could be memory failure. Try removing memory modules one by one.
Also, could be motherboard failure. I just fixed (I hope I did) a Compaq Presario V6000 laptop with exactly the same problem by baking the motherboard in the over. I’m not kidding. 🙂
Check out this post: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2010/04/06/fixing-compaq-presario-v6000-motherboard-no-video-issue/
have a laptop that comes on when switched on but would boot any further beyond the “company name” that appears during boot. please what do i need to do to bring it back on. I’ve tried a a few tips but to no avail. thanks
I am having problems with my dell xps m1210. It will not fully boot. It goes to a certain point and then nothing…
Please provide more information about the failure. Do you see the Windows logo? Can you boot your laptop in safe mode (press F8 on startup and select Safe Mode).
Can you enter the BIOS setup menu?
Try replacing memory modules. If you have two modules installed, remove them one by one and test the laptop with each module separately. Could be a bad memory module.
i’ve got a hp pavilion dv6000. it worked fine when i got it now it won’t even turn on. every once in a while, it will come on but after it or someone shuts it down it will not come back on. the led lights come on but the power button will not nor the screen so it cant be the charger. someone has looked at it before and said it cant be fixed but they couldn’t tell me why. i just want to try and fix it myself or atleast know what happened to it.
My laptop won’t start or power up. There are no lights. I have tried taking out the battery and cord and holding down the power button for 30 seconds, then replacing he cord and powering up but it still does not work I even tried holding it upside down.
My sony vaio VGN-FZ11L was repaired for nVidia geforce 8400 MT graphics problem few months ago and perhaps some work was done on the motherboard. Yesterday, I had connected it with my TV with extended display and then close the lid. I had to do some work again on the laptop so immediately took the lid up but nothing appeared on the screen. I pressed power, enter button to wake it up but it did not work. I thought it is still in middle of sleep mode.
I put down the lid after some time it shows all the LEDs (HDD, wireless) blinking so I opened the lid again. The screen came in normal way but not responding then I tried to close some programs from task manager, but still it was not responding. I pressed the shut down and then it started it to shut down and started installing updates for my laptop then shut it down coolly. But after that I have tried to boot it many times. Every time power LED gets on but nothing happens. I can’t hear any sound of fan or hard disk. Screen remains blank. System does not go for reboot. Might it be related with earlier repair?
I hold power button pressed for sometime but it does not restart. I tried with removing battery, only on battery, only on power. In all situations it shows power LED on (also battery LED when on battery) but nothing happens. I removed RAM (two 1GBs) one by one and tried all possible combinations it remained same even I tried to clean it with pencil eraser (suggested somewhere). I took HDD also out and put it back after gentle cleaning but it remained same. I took all the RAMs and HDD out and tried to on it again it shows only Power LED on as before. I remember that I had installed a registry error checking software suggested by veoh.com . I don’t know what really happen. Please help. Thanks
Another thing to try would be disconnecting the CMOS battery for a while. This trick helped me before a few times on Sony laptops.
If disconnecting the CMOS battery doesn’t help, it’s possible the motherboard failure.
The CMOS (RTC) battery is located under the base cover. Access the battery, disconnect it for a while, reconnect the battery and test the laptop again.
It’s not clear if you tried replacing the AC adapter with a new one. If not, test your AC adapter with a voltmeter, make sure the output voltage is correct. It’s possible you have a failed AC adapter.
1. Could be just failing memory module.
2. HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 series notebooks have a know issue with the GPU failure.
If you have a problem with the GPU failure, you can fix it this way: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2010/04/06/fixing-compaq-presario-v6000-motherboard-no-video-issue/
Do it only as a last resort because you can damage the laptop.
Hi, Thanks for suggestion. I digged into my laptop and reached to CMOS battery. Disconnecetd for sometime and reconnected but nothing happened :(. Does it seem bigger problem?
Most likely the motherboard failure.
Thanks again. Is it possible that CMOS battery died or both of RAM failed. When it is getting power then it show at least something on display. What did u say? Mother board failure means too much cost will be involved !!!
Sorry I mean to say that it should something on display if it is getting power.
Thanks alot! I was in a situation similar to situation 2 and removing the battery trick worked. Thank you!
That’s good! Always try the easy stuff first.
Im relatively new to laptops, so i really didnt know what i was doing.
None of these examples really presented the situation i had, the laptop would start, flashed some of the leds couple times and then nothing. Even HD or CD drive didnt react anyway.
So i decided to try removing the memory chips, guess what?
It worked! Thanks for the advices!
The solutions given above are really helpful. It helped me to fix my system immediately. Thanks
My HP laptop has enough power even with the battry, when I start it, nothing comes on the screen. Just the screen will light on background, nothing goes on then, I try to go to CMOS set up by presing F12, that does not seem to work ethir. I do not know what to do. If you would kindly help me with my situation, I would really appricated for your help.
When I try to start my old IMB 310ED Thinkpad with the AC Daptor plugged in:
1. The power lights come on
2. The system starts to boot
3. An initial ticking sound is heard
4. The ticking sound stops
5. The IMB logo and Thinkpad word appears on the screen
6. “BIOS V2.1” appears at the top left corner of the screen
7. “016000 KB Memory Good” appears on the screen
8. “071. CMOS Battery Bad”
9. “Press F2 Key to enter SETUP or F1 Key to continue” appears on the screen
Is the problem with this computer simply that the CMOS Battery needs to be replaced?
Thanks for any help you might be able to provide. 🙂
hai , iam using dell studio laptop .when i switch on the laptop the power botton was blincking constantly and hard drive indication light blicks just once and dislay was not comming.and no responce in laptop but power light was constantly lightening.. i removed battery from laptop and insert it after some time but same problem repeats. can any one give solution for this .
Hi I have an IBM Thinkpad T30 2367 that a friend of mine gave me. When he was using it he said a cat pissed on it and it shut down. The unit sat for close to 2 years before he gave it to me so I think the battery is bad.
Initially I plugged it in and turned it on and power, bat, etc LED turned on, can hear fan running, but no post or video. Power supply is good and I removed/swapped ram, hdd, dvd etc. with no change. I took it apart and found the dried residue on the mobo, cleaned the area, and inspected it with a loop.
I can see a couple of the tiny ic pins corroded, (but firmly attached to mobo) and fuse F9 looked bad. I tested F9 with dmm and it is open. So my main question is it worth to replace the fuse and retest, or is it more than likely that something else is burned out and it will blow it again…?
Thanks! Any input is appreciated.
i have also a similar type of problem
let me noe wen u gt any solution
I am having the problem in my lenovo laptop, when power on the laptop the LED’s are lighting and the LCD screen also works, but the screen stand by starting windows . i can’t enter in to the main window

My system doesnt boot, when i press the power button it comes on, the led light and fan works. I can even eject the dvd drive, but the screen writes ” Hp invent” and write below “press ESC to change boot order. Press f2 to enter setup, f12 to boot from LAN.” I have tried all this but is still not working. Plz help me. Thanks.
Yesterday I was watching a film on my laptop near the fire when it suddenly shut down. I tried to turn it on and that message appeared:
“This computer system, #(the number), is protected by a pre-boot authetication system. You cannot access the data on this computer without proper authentication.
Authentication Using Biometric”
I’m affraid I was too close to the fire… Can it be fixed?
Hi again! I “fixed” the problem! I just didn’t know what “Authentication Using Biometric” meant… 🙂
Im having a problem with my dell lapto
p went i turn it on it loads windows xp then it restarts by it self.
Can you boot in Safe Mode? Turn on the laptop and press F8 when Dell logo appears on the screen. Select Safe Mode from the boot menu. Also, you can try Last Known Good Configuration.
I have a dell laptop. When i turn it on it kind of boots, then it reboots and says that the computer could not start properly. Then it recommend doing a check. The computer checks for errors and do not find any. Then it gave me five options: to do a system recovery, what I did, but it couldn’t finish also. Said something about error code(i don’t remember the beginning)x8000ffff.other options ware memory recovery, something more- none of them worked the way they should’ve. Last one was a command prompt- that worked, but I actually do not know what to do with it. The thins I want to know that if this is a software malfunktion that I can fix with a windows disk(7), I dont have it with me yet, so i can not try right now, or is this some hardware error- short circuit maybe? or is there something wrong with a harddrive? Because if this is about hardware, then my warranty covers it. I would really appreciate it if you could answer via e-mail as soon as possible.
hi, wondering if someone can help. my laptop froze and was frozen for quite some time. i tried ctrl alt del and that didn’t do anything. eventually i shut it down by the power button. when i started it back up the screen says launch start up repair or start windows normally. i have tried both of these options and each time it loads to the blue windows background, NOT a solid blue screen. it looks just like it would if you were at the username login but there is nothing on the screen. when it first reaches this screen a small windows box with black background, almost like the command propt window pops up for 1 second, then disappears. the mouse is visible, but is largerin size than normal and nothing happens after that. i’ve shut it down and tried a few times, worried that might effect it more. i did f10 at startup and i do not see a system restore option, but i am trying to avoid restoring. help?
There could be a problem with the hard drive. I would definitely try running hard drive test first.
You can use SeaTools from Seagate, it’s a good test. Download this tool, burn it on a CD and boot your laptop from that CD. After that run a long test.
What is your laptop? Some laptops have hard drive test utility in the BIOS. You can enter the BIOS menu and run hard drive test from there.
Also, it could be software related problem and running the recovery process will fix the problem (but don’t forget to backup your data first).
All Dell laptops have built in diagnostic tools.
When you turn on the laptop, press on F12 (I believe it’s F12 button). At the end of the listed bootable devices you’ll see Diagnostics.
Run complete laptop diagnostics. If it fails, write down Dell error code and call Dell.
hi, i’ve a dell laptop that does not power on. i check the motherboard and evreything on it. could it be the proccessor?
My laptop(acer aspire 5315) will not boot. It starts and does the “prepare to boot OS” screen, but the it says windows failed to start and gives me the option of running startup repair. When I start it normally it starts to load and then stays on a black screen. it does the same thing with startup repair…
Can you boot in Safe Mode and use System Restore tool to revert system back to the time when it was booting fine?
If not, probably you’ll have to reinstall Windows OS from scratch.
What do you mean it does not power on? The laptop is completely dead and there are no LED lights when you plug the adapter?
Or power LED comes on but the laptop will not turn on when you push the power button?
I have situation 2 at hand and I have tried both solutions you have given, but neither has worked. My toshiba laptop, when turned on, has the fans and led lights on, but then doesn’t start up and soon after shuts off. What do you suggest I do?
I poured water on my laptop and i let it dry for about a week. When i power it on, it gives me the option to either press F2 or F12, neither works. And then it makes an ear-piercing sound that goes on continuously. One time, F12 actually worked and i discovered that the start up is faulty. But now, it won’t let me even get to F12.
Hi the start up button on my laptop is faulty. I have to press it about 10 times to boot up. What would the problem with it be.
You tried removing RAM modules one by one, right?
If it’s not bad RAM or AC adapter, it must be motherboard failure.
Just in case, try removing the battery, wait for a few minutes, plug in the AC adapter and try turning it on again.
Could be just the keyboard failure.
You can try disconnecting the laptop keyboard from the motherboard and testing the laptop just with an external USB keyboard.
If the laptop works fine with an external USB keyboard but makes continuous beeping noise when internal keyboard connected, try replacing the keyboard.
It’s hard to tell.
How does it fail when the laptop doesn’t start?
The fan spinning? LED lights turn on but no video? Or the laptop looks completely dead?
I have a situation, that is a bit similar to Situation 2, but not quite like it. I have HP 6715B. When pressing the power on button , it does nothing, only the orange power led blinks 8 times. That is when the battery is in. When the laptop is on AC only, it doesn’t even blink. Tried with several chargers, nothing works. Any suggestions, what is the cause of this? (Please don’t say faulty mainboard, I really don’t want to hear that :'( )
I have a gateway laptop.
When I turn it on it gets to a blue Gateway screen and then locks up. This is a loaned laptop so I need to fix it soon before I have to return it. It worked fine up to 2 days ago.
my dell laptop is not starting,
it is dell inspiron1525, i have a problem of shutting down when it is heated up from several days, but now it has restarted because of updating windows option and while restarting it is doing configuring updates and at 0% it takes much time and then without configuring updates it is shutting down itself, i tried safe mode, debugging mode, and also tried diagnostic option, it is shutting down in the middle of testingi in diagnostic mode.,,and i also tried to install new os, it says no hard drive connected.
please send me reply by mail if possible, or otherwise just inform me when u replied…
Thanks in advance..
I just fixed my daughter’s Gateway by reseating the memory cards. It was dead, only HD would spin for a little while and stop, no video. I removed both memory cards, then started it, nothing. Then I reinstalled one, and it worked. I installed the other and worked!!!
Thanks for your advice.
Dell Inspiron E1705 / 9400 Laptop
I just plugged the AC adapter into the computer now to verify. The battery charge indicator lit up to the normal green for a few seconds, but eventually flashed yellow then went off.
When I push the power button to turn the laptop on, nothing happens.
Remove hard drive and DVD drive and try turing it on again. Remove memory modules one by one and try truning it on again.
If nothing helps, it’s likely the motherboard is bad.
It’s possible your laptop shutting down in the middle of doing something because of overheating.
Blow off cooling fan and heatsink with compressed air. This will remove most dust from the cooling module.
After that let it finish updates.
I left my laptop on my bed and accidentally covered it with my comforter(which i guess stopped the airflow in and out of it) when i came back it was already dead(it was hot)so now my situation is similar to situation 2.here’s what happens when i press the power button.
– LED lights will turn on(except the HDD LED light).
– Fan will start spinning.
– blank screen
I tried replacing the memory module several times but no luck.
when i removed the CPU from the motherboard i got a slightly different result when i press the power button.
with the CPU attached: power will stay on ( LED lights, FAN will stay on)
without the CPU: power will stay on for about 10 seconds, then the laptop will automatically shut down.
so my question is did i fried something? can you tell if its the motherboard or the CPU?
It’s possible you damaged the motherboard. What is your laptop manufacture and model by the way?
i have a toshiba satellite l305d-s5934. i also have a strong feeling that it is the motherboard but is there a possibility that the CPU is damaged too? i have checked the CPU and it looks normal, no smell or burnt mark. i already ordered a replacement Mobo online, hope everything goes well
Thanks my memory needed changed as you suggested . Many thanks I thought I would have to ditch laptop as I have been upgrading and running hours of fixes. Will be back here hopefully not too soon.
my sony Vgn-N21E suddenly died on me.Power supply is fine even i checked DC jack on MB. there is power but there is no any lignts are on even i plug the power supply.no response when i press on switch..cannot find the fuse on MB. what could be…pl help
From my experience I can tell that CPU failures aver very rare.
I’ve replaced hundreds failed motherboards but only very few failed CPUs.
sir, my lenovo laptop gives a beep sound when i will start and with a black screen and the laptop will not start and pressing any key it will normally start and there are no beep sound further .. plz help me .

Hello, my laptop is an ACER Aspire one, I am able to charge it and turn it on, however, it turns itself off in less than 2 minutes each time. Also, prior to this the wireless stopped functioning.
Please help 🙁
Surely your troubleshooting trick helps for my Notebook. Thank you very much. Thanks a lot… I glad to wish your service to the people… Thank you…
HP Pavilion ze4540US Notebook PC
The computer starts with a black background and white writing
that give you the option of :
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last know etc.
start windows normally
after30 seconds the Windows XP screen comes up for about 2 seconds then a
blue screen for it seems like less than a second. Then the above black
screen process starts over again and again indefinitely until I manually shut
down the PC.
If you go to “last known etc” the above process starts again.
If you use any of the “safe modes” a long list of files scrolls on the
screen and the process starts again.
I replaced the memory modules and the same thing happens.
Any help would be appreciated.
The same thing happen to my IBM laptop as Ang (Post no. 406). It shows a few options. cannot boot even in safe mode. it loads a few files and drivers, then end up in blue screen. since that blue screen is shown only a few seconds, i cannot read entirely. but it said something like check ur new hardware or driver, bla bla.
but i’m sure i didn’t install any driver or hardware recently. i was just copying songs fr my external hdd and leave it for lunch. when came back, i saw that blue screen no matter which mode i use to boot. I can do a clean install, but i need to retrive some data from it. Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance
My HP Pavilion shows the LED on when AC Adapter is plugged but laptop does not react on pressing the power button. Can you suggest what could be the pain point?
What laptop model?
Disconnect the AC adapter, remove the battery and wait for a few minutes. Now plug in the AC adapter and try turning it on again.
my toshiba m305d s4830 is dead.
when i press power button,
powers up, power button light turns on,
caps lock and num lock flashes once,
CPU fan spins for 1 second and stops
the light under toshiba logo on the left corner side doesn’t turn on
people say it maybe
north bridge chip problem
GPU chip problem
what is the real problem do you think?
It’s not very clear. Is there any image on the screen when you turn on the laptop?
If there is no image, this could be memory related problem.
Try reconnecting memory module. Test the laptop with only one memory module installed.
i have a laptop hp pavilion tx2635ea the problem is :
i turn on the laptop the fan is on few seconds nothing on the screen the capslock butom flashing (all lights on)and nothing on the screen…i tried to remove the HDD nothing happen too ,i remove the RAM too nothing happen and the bios battery and i tried too to remove the battery and replace by other the problem is the same and i try to remove the battery and pluged with the AC power directly nothing happen plz can u help me waiting ur reply and thx alot for ur time…
Have you tried removing memory modules one by one? Test the laptop with each memory module separately, one of the modules could be bad.
yea i do it too and nothing happen :s
Apparently, this is motherboard failure.
I have a Toshiba L505, when i press the power button only the power LED illuminates, CPU fan operates, DVD operates ONLY… nothing else, i’ve tried to make the memory (RAM) modules swap and removed the HD with no progress.. So what i can do to further check my laptop?
I have a HP pavilion DV6 1105e laptop.
With battery not holding up and noise from the left hand side , I used the laptop for 6 months. Now, its not working.
At first when i started, screen was unresponsive and then it was not shutting down either, so i removed the battery and tried to start it again but to no avail. when the power cable is plugged in, there is light right there but no response from any other source.
please let me know what might be the problem.
Hi, can You help me with this. I had rupture cable of AC adapter.
One day AC adapter shorted out(sparking), since then i can not turn on my laptop.
I bought new original adapter but when i plug in laptop – Diode on AC adapter start bliking+some noise and laptop will not turn on.
What can be wrong?
I have a packard bell tj65, When I plug the AC adapter the battery charge LED lights up. But when I press on the power button the laptop wont start. There is no power LED or fan or any thing, but sometimes if i keep closing and opening the lid and at the same time press the power button, it starts up. but it happens once in about a 100 tries. I suspect the problemis with the lid switch oir may be the power button. but i am not sure how to repair it. any ideas?
hi all i have a acer notebook it will not load a windows file and crashes, what can i do,
it is running windows vista
I guess you’ll have to reinstall Windows OS.
Backup all personal files as it explained in this post: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/04/17/access-hard-drive-using-usb-enclosure/
It’s hard to tell what’s going on without touching the laptop.
You can try barebone system troubleshooting technique as I explained in the following guide: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2008/06/14/laptop-dead-troubleshoot-the-problem/
First of all, isn’t the system still covered by HP warranty?
My computer , when i turn it on . It goes to the screen that says safe mode or regular start up so i hit regular and it goes to a blue screen with all these things on it and than when i restart and hit safemode it goes always back to the blue screen . i restart it again and hit f8 and ive clicked on about everything it always goes back to the blue screen that says how a turn off of the computer went wrong or something and it says to go to safe mode but i tried it doesnt work . please help ? 🙂
This could be failed hard drive or Windows OS corrupted.
What kind of laptop is it? Some laptops (HP for example) have built in the BIOS hard drive testing tool.
1. I would test hard drive first. If it’s bad, replace the hard drive and reinstall Windows OS.
2. If hard drive passes test. You can back up personal data with an external USB enclosure. Take a look at this guide:
hi i am having trouble startin gmy laptop compaq windows vista. first it it slow down while usinng internet then i would reboot worked for a little while then again rebooted it, now i did a total reformat to factory settings now when i start up it says on bottom of screen ”windows files loading then it comes up with start up repair. then start up repair cant fix something
asks ”if you have recently attached a device remove it and restart. i havent attached any thing in months
please help me thank you for your time
my laptop is compaq presario cq60 it does not restart and hard to start i mean my laptop is not starting but if i try 100 more times then it start again if i restart then it does n’t what may be the problem mate can any one help me….please i’m very worried about that’
My compaq presario C700 starts but says Windows Error Recovery so i launch start-up repair and it says windows is loading files…then it goes to a blue screen and does nothing so then i start it up again and this time i choose the option to start windows normally and it says one of the disks needs to be checked for consistency so I let it which takes about 5 minutes then it says to wait while the computer restarts. Then it takes about another 3 or 4 minutes then it goes right back to saying one of the disks needs to be checked for consistency. Once it does all that again it says please wait while your computer restarts. Then we’re right back at square one again. So this time I “press any key” to stop the repair and it goes to the vista start up screen and says configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 0% complete – Do Not Turn off your computer. Then it says “Shutting Down” Please help
I have a Dell Inspiron 1420. It’s about two years old, has Windows Vista and an Intel Pentium Chip (I wanna say Pentium 4). Lately it keeps BSODing and then I have to restart it. Now it just freezes and I have to hard boot it. Yesterday when I tried that, I restarted like normal and nothing happened. The comp turns on, the start up screen appears and then there is a cursor in the top left corner. I have no idea what could have happened but I have bought an external HD so I can transfer my data (I was planning on doing it soon and now the comp won’t boot).
Anyone have any idea what this could be? I am not very tech savvy, so please use the simplest terms possible if you can. Also I don’t know much about disassembling a laptop, so I don’t know exactly what to check. I will tell you I can get into the BIOS and the per start up system tests (the F2 and F12 keys) but after the system tests finish, it freezes again and I have to hard boot. I’m terrified the hard drive has failed 🙁
Any help or advice you can offer would be much appreciated. If I can’t figure it out, I plan to call Dell next week and talk to their tech support (I believe the laptop has a 3 year extended warranty). I would really like to avoid that if all possible though because the last time when my old laptop went out, I had to ship it out to them to get it fixed. It got fixed but it was a pain to do 🙁
I have a Packard Bell(Easy Note) Lap Top. Pressing the power on button will begin the boot up as normal but then it will power off directly after or at any time within 10 minutes. When it powers off the LED light also goes out.
I have tried a proven AC power adapter. cleaned out the heat sink including new paste. Re-sat the RAM all without success. I guess the motherboard power conection maybe at fault but would like a second opinion does anyone have any ideas or suggestions that may assist me with this problem.
I have a dell inspiron that is a year old. When I push the power button it makes the noise as if it is starting up, and the LCD light also lights up, but after a few seconds the noises quit and the light shuts off.. then a few minutes later it will repeat the noise of starting up and the light. The noises then will stop and my computer will become extremely hot.
hi i’m having dell laptop.just now i am instaled one new software after that my latop caught a problem while startup and not able to start.how can i remove that software?
Maybe the cooling fan failed and the laptop shuts off because of overheating.
Turn on the laptop and listen for the fan noises. Does the fan start working at all?
If not, there is a chance it’s failed fan.
Here’s what you can try.
Turn on the laptop and press F8 when Dell logo appears on the screen. From the menu select Last Known Good Configuration and press enter. Wait. Does it boot now?
If not, you can use same F8 key but select Safe Mode instead. Uninstall software in Safe Mode. Or you can try using System Restore and revert OS back to the time when it was working properly.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. Have been having trouble booting it. I put in Norton virus software and it picked up and fixed 508 things and one Trojan. Still start up problems, sometimes starts fine, other times I have to safe start it from menu – now I am getting Dell on screen lights flashing but screen stays black with just my arrow on it, nothing else. I have been using adapter with it and have kept battery in which I hear is not good. How can I tell if the battery is the problem?
Was working okay earlier, now I am dead in the water.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, I had a bad memory chip.
Yesterday i logged on my computer and everything was normal but than a software i don’t remember installing or maybe it was part of the acer aspire one laptop that i brought, suddenly popped up and saying that i have 17 item found that were types of malware, trojan, or tracking cookie. Once in awhile later, announcement kept on popping up indicated that external hackers are trying to transfer my data to a dangerous site and they are trying to get connected to the internet to harm my laptop even more. Lots of windows started popping up intensely. I got scared and shut it down while trying to remove the software that was telling me that. I believe the software was called, ” Malware doctors”? or “protection centre”? The software wouldn’t removed no matter how many times i tried. When i tried to turn on my laptop again….it just stop to the point where the window xp loading screen. I try to start up in ” safe mode” but it just froze and when i press ” last known good configuration” it just continue to the window xp screen again. I tried alt + f10 but it brings me to the acer recovery management and choosing the recovery options that i want, it said it will restart my computer and it stops at the window xp loading screen again. Can someone tell me what my problem is? Do i really have something infected? How can i fix it?
thank u i do not have to pay some one to fix it
Thank you!!My partner’s laptop(a horrid Acer) wasn’t starting up-took one of the memory cards out and it works fine again 🙂

I have Lenovo R400 labtop when i tried to turn it on it just display
The Lenovo logo and stop working?
I can’t do any thing i pressed f8 f1 f12 and start safe mod
But no reply ???
What can i do ?
I have an Acer aspire 5741. Just got it back from Acer as I claimed the warranty on it. The original problem that it wasnt charging and the power led and charging led were blinking. First Acer refused to repair it and asked cash for a replacement of motherboard, though writing letters to their CEO, country manager did the trick and they sent it back to me after repair.
Now the problem is, as soon as it came back, I plugged it in so it could charge. But after 5 to 10 minutes the charging led on laptop started blinking. The laptop also didnot boot up. the power led would come on for a second and woud not turn on. Moreover, there was some strange sound coming from the laptop and the charging led on laptop started blinking again. I turned off the charger, but the power light kept on blinking. Then I took out the battery and placed it back. It seemed to charge like normal for 10 minutes then the charging led started to blink. Then after 10 mins it started to charge normally but again after 10 mins or so the charging led started to blink.
Another funny thing is when I turn off the charger and reomve the cord from the d/c jack, the charging light keeps on blinking.
I tried another charger but same result. Another funny thing is when I turn off the charger and reomve the cord from the d/c jack, the charging light keeps on blinkin. Hardisk was fine when I sent it to Acer
i have a gateway m-6750 that wont boot it goes through the startup process but thats it the screen goes blank but still lit up
Does it display Gateway logo and goes blank after that? It’s not very clear how and when it fails.
First of all, I would check laptop memory and hard drive. A failing hard drive can stop the laptop from booting.
Run Memtest86+ to test memory.
Run SeaTools disc diagnostic from Seagate, it works fine for many different hard drive brands.
Most likely it was DC jack related problem.
Sounds like motherboard failure. I would call Acer again. Most likely the last repair still has 30 days warranty.
Does it shut down after displaying the Lenovo logo or the laptop just keep displaying the logo?
Try removing the hard drive and start the laptop without hard drive. Can you enter the BIOS setup menu when the hard drive removed?
This could be memory related failure.
Try removing memory modules one by one and test the laptop with each memory module separately. It’s possible that one of the modules is going bad.
Try installing memory into different slots. Try different memory-slot combination.
The laptop should start properly when bad module is removed.
Hello, i Have a Packarbell Easynote laptop, For some days ago it suddenly just died. If i put in the charger it lights a little LED as it should, but when i push the start button nothing happens. Its totally dead, U have any answear for that ? Thanks for now.
My Aspire 3002 froze during the first part of the bootup ie when the ACER logo was present, I could not power down using the power button and had to remove the battery.
Now, when trying to start it the power light comes on, the fan operates, but nothing else – screen stays blank, no HDD noise. I think it’s a bios problem? any ideas?
Pls my zenox laptop refuse to boot. After checkin the drives and all that it wil jst give a blank page there after and that’s all, nothing wil come up again. Pls i don’t knw wat is wrong right now…it jst started all of a sudden. I use window xp. Thnx so much for ur response in anticipation.
Hello, I have an Acer TravelMate 290, the next problem is, I press the power button lights blink and go out! if I pressed the buttons from the keyboard light turns from dvd-rw (I hdd in it) do not know what to do and more I removed the memory …. I've changed everything we did, we saw easily warm RAM all time! Thanks!
Have you tried removing the battery, disconnecting the AC adapter, waiting for a few minutes? The laptop might start after that.
If it doesn’t help, try reseating memory modules. Try removing memory sticks one by one. This could be memory failure.
This could be memory failure. By any chance, do you know if you have two memory modules installed? One of them could be bad.
Try removing memory modules one by one and turn on the laptop with only one (either one) memory installed. Try different memory slots.
If one of the modules is bad, the laptop should start properly when you remove it.
Turn on the laptop and press F8 when logo appears on the screen. Will it give you a menu with boot options? If it does, try Last Known Good Configuration.
I have a Gateway M-series laptop. When I try to turn it on, the CD light flashes and then everything stops. After multiple tries at restarts, The CD light will light then the HD light will light and the Laptop will boot up fine. Vista OS. Tried removing battery and power and draining but to no avail.
Should my next step be checking the memory or the HD connection? Or what else? Appreciate any advise.
I’m having similar issues, my laptop has lights and fan but no video of any kind. It started when I plugged my iPod touch in. I received an “unknown hardware” message, then it froze. I unplugged the iPod and using the power button turned the computer off then back on – nothing. It happened once before and after a couple hours worked normally. This time is far worse. Does this sound like a memory issue?
My HP Pavilion dv6700 laptop has been getting worse over time, but now it’s dead! The battery has been lasting shorter and shorter periods, but still worked on mains power. A few weeks ago, the laptop just switched off. It was pretty warm, so I let it cool and then tried again. It booted for a few minutes before dying again. Over the last few days I have kept trying to get it to boot up, but now when pressing the power on button, all the LEDs light up and then go out – nothing more happens.
With the power lead plugged in, the blue power LED lights up, so power is getting to the laptop. It just won’t do anything (with or without the battery plugged in).
Any help gratefully appreciated.
Check the memory. One of the modules could be failing.
First, disconnect the AC adapter, remove the battery and push on the power button for a few seconds. Now plug in the AC adapter and try again. Does it work now?
Not really. I don’t like that your laptop failed after you connected the iPod. Could be something more serious then just memory.
Take a look inside the USB ports. Make sure all pins are straight and not shorting.
Your description sounds like motherboard failure.
Try removing some laptop components: battery, DVD drive, hard drive, wireless card, etc… Whatever you can without taking it apart completely.
Try turning the laptop on after that.
Also, try removing memory modules one by one. And test again.
If nothing helps, probably this is motherboard related failure. Not worth fixing.
I have a Packard Bell Easynote ‘ALP ajax-D’, my problem sounds like the “Situation 2.” problem you’ve described. I tried removing the 2 memory cards (leaving one in) as instructed but unfortunately no results.
I notice that the fan is not spinning either when I turn on the computer.
Is it time to take it to the repair shop?
Thank you in advance!!
I have HP PROBOOK 4510S laptop 4GB RAM. month ago I had an HHD failure (WD 500GB)for no apparent reason, although it is only about 2 years old. I changed the HHD with another WD 500 GB and it work OK .. but still I hear some clicking sound from time to time coming out from the hard. Is it normal?? the HDD temperature is between 35-37c and the fan is working well (no heating). NOW my current problem is that some time the pc wont shut down completely (the power button still lights) until I press the power button myself. Also it happens a lot that the pc does not restart. Is it a hardware or software problem?? I have installed windows 7 more that once and seems ok.
my adapter is totally fine n the lisghts on the laptop is also shown ut when i press the start utton there is no reaction …..
the laptop seems to be dead….
i have got Compaq presario CQ60…
please help me out soon…..
its really urgent
First of all, I would check memory modules. This could be memory related failure.
Try reseating memory modules. If you have two modules installed, test the laptop with each memory module separately.
If memory is fine, most likely this is motherboard failure.
my laptop has the opposite problem. it boots fine, but does not restart or shut down properly.i receive a blue screen after i log out and after about a minute of it loading to shut down. because of this problem, i can not install any software, since the computer won’t properly shut down. i can turn it off, but after a couple seconds following the blue screen, it comes back on. please help!
How do i reseat the memory modules??
I have two laptops which I am currently having trouble with.
The first one is a HP pavilion, when I push the power button, it starts up, nothing is visable on the screen and it beeps and then turns itself off and restarts. If I turn it off and back on again after a few hours it will eventually turn on but it turns itself off if left unattended for a while.
My second laptop is a toshiba (not sure which module) it has been working fine but last week it wasnt shut down properly and the lid was just closed. When you push the power button it turns on but stays on the toshiba start up page, it beeps now and again too. I took it into uni a few days ago and he took out the memory etc in the back and replaced them and it seemed to be working ok but now im having the same problems again and it now beeps as thou one of the keys are being held down…
Any ideas how I can fix both of them???
i have hp dv3500 all of a sudden it fail to start. When i press the Start button the LED flash and nothing happen. I removed all the connected hardwares on the board and try starting, still same problem. I coupled the system back and try starting, still nothing. Can any one help.
If removing memory cards one by one didn’t make any difference and the cooling fan doesn’t spin at all, there could be a problem with the motherboard. I guess it’s time to take it to the repair shop.
Normally you shouldn’t have any clicking sounds from a good working hard drive. Download and run HDTune, test your hard drive for bad sectors and other errors.
Hard to tell. Could be either hardware or software.
It’s possible that your new drive is not good because your description sounds like a harddrive related problem.
Definitely run HDTune.
I would run hard drive test. It’s possible the hard drive is failing.
Try downloading and running HDTune, which is hard drive testing utility.
Simply remove the memory module from the slot and install back in.
Could be memory failure. Try removing memory modules one by one. If one of the memory modules is bad, the laptop should start properly when you remove the bad module.
It’s possible one of the keyboard keys is stuck. It’s necessary to disconnect the laptop keyboard from the motherboard and test the laptop with an external USB keyboard. If it works fine when internal keyboard disconnected, most likely that’s your problem. Replace the keyboard.
Did you test the AC adapter.
It’s possible your AC adapter is dead and the battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the laptop. Just a guess.
thanks a lot, My acer aspire 5738G stopped working suddenly, when I turn on only the led lights of electricity turn on and nothing launch, I didnt know what to do until i read your helping tips , I removed the memory cards and fixed again and IT fixed the problem.
If the laptop fails again, it’s possible the memory module is bad. Try replacing the memory module next time (if it fails again).
my acer aspire 5315.. jst turnened off wen i installed one stuff like dat… the light is on, the fan turns, the cd rom turns en a disc is inserted bt no display both on external monitor .. i took out the ram nd put another, even the hdd.. but still.. no display no sound wat shd i do?
Here’s something to try.
Disconnect the AC adapter, remove the battery, push on the power button for a few seconds. Now plug in the AC adapter and try turning it on.
when i turn on my laptop the monitor is black but all the LEDS are flashing whats the problem pls. reply ASAP.
i have a compaq N610, whenever i start it,i get options of safe mode, last good configuration etc.Windows XP logo typically appears on the screen and then it shuts down again even when i restarted it. Please i need a solution, I’m desperate here!
I have Dell 1500 studio laptop when i press the start button it glows for 2 sec and puts off and nothing happens the Ac Adapter indicator LED is not glowing too it blinks some times pls help me.
I have a hp dv6700 that will power on but only with a charged battery. I have tried various known to be good ac adapters and the laptop will not power via dc power. I even tried replacing the power jack which btw is lit when plugging in ac adapter. Any suggestions?
I think this is motherboard related failure. If you tried another adapter and different DC jack but still cannot start just from AC, the problem is somewhere on the motherboard.
Does it start just from the battery power?
What if you remove the battery and try turning on just from AC?
i have a Viooo notebook, when i use it for a long time and put it off, it takes a long time before it can be start up again.
secondly, how can a laptop that reboot itself automatically be fixed.
My Siemens Fujitsu Amilo laptop will not boot up. I keep on getting the on screen message :-
” Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key ”
I have no idea what to do. Please help.
I turned my laptop off whilst it was frozen, after turning it back on I selected the reccomended mothed to start my laptop as it said it was a repair method, it now loads up to the windows 7 opening screen and no further, it doesn’t even give me the opportunity to put my password in, is there anything seriously wrong, or I can I fix it myself?
i have BENQ u121 joybook lite, its working good but whenever i turn it shutdown, its screen display that ” window is shuting down ” but it does not shutdown.
so i have to turn it off by the power button.
plz help me to resolve this issue
Try scanning the hard drive for errors.
1. Go to “My Computer”, right click on (C:) drive and select Properties.
2. In the local disk properties window click on Tools and then click on Check now.
3. In the new window make sure both boxed are checked.
4. Click Start.
It’s possible you’ll have to reboot your laptop and the disk check utility will run on startup.
This could be hardware related failure, something like failing hard drive but also could be software issue.
Here’s something to try.
Press F8 on startup and select “Last Known Good Configuration” option. Does it help to boot to the desktop?
Hi i have a new asus k42j laptop.
Whenever it gets lowbat, and i charge it, i cannot go back to windows unless i long press the power button and start the machine again. Do i have to press something (some key) so that i can go back to windows once i charge it without having to manual turn off? and is this normal?
my HP laptop sounds like it is turning on, but after a few seconds it switches off, I have changed the battery and also plugged it in to the mains but this doesn’t resolve the problem. Have you any ideas
i would like to ask a question that, after a long time i start that laptop it gives the display everything till booting windows.but when i restarts the laptop there is no display.i usually feel extra heating i my self clean all the dust withtin the heat sing of processor and now the extra heating is solved but the display disturbs, every thing is working my battery have a backup and light is on.but hardly after few minute my display is out.first it hang and then when i restarts then no display.i have to wait for a 24 hour then its backon but after few minutes my display is gone. i have 2 moudule memory i changed one by one but invane.i removed hardisk and dvd as well.still in vain.i found alot of dust within the heat sing after cleaning fan is working fine and air brings out warm air.any suggestion on repairing.i totally open the case each and everyting and clean through tooth brush .everyting is clean but still display problem
I guess your laptop goes into the hibernation mode. You should be able to turn it back if you push on the power button.
Can you test the AC adapter?
It’s possible your AC adapter is dead and the battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the laptop.
Can you get normal voltage readings on the AC adapter?
i turn on the laptop it goes past the dell loading screen then it just has a “-” line flashing and it doesnt go past that ive restarted it loads of times it still doesnt work
This could be hard drive failure.
First of all, take a look at the BIOS setup menu. Can you see the hard drive detected by the BIOS?
Run hard drive diagnostic test. Usually I use SeaTools from Seagate. This utility works well with most laptop hard drives.
Test your laptop with an external monitor. If external video fails same way, most likely this is motherboard (graphics card) related issue.
I have completed one settion.I have already post a question regarding display problems.I was an mobile technition a year ago so i dont depend on other until i fails in hardware of software troubleshooting.I would like to inform first because may be if anyone try to attempt what i did may be he lost something like connector cable connection methods.be very patient when working on trobleshooting issues. Now my question is that i was fedup trying to get my display back according to the suggestion like i should try through external monitor, but invane. How i got my diplay back when i open the all the panel except the lcd,i found extreame dust near processor heatsign and near keyboard connector and vga port.Dust was not an issue because i havnt got what i want.laptop is on hard is working and ram too.may be builtin Vga card is the hardle. But when suddenly i wake in the morning and try to work on the laptop i naturally press some area of keyboard and mouse pad.i Got What i want.display is back.now no display problem but if i dont press hard over the motherboard is dosnt gives the display.everytime when ever i want display i have to press beyond the mouseket pad above the motherboard. Now i am confused that still i havnt got the permenet solution.May be motherboard earth issues everypart of motherboard is screwed but still invane.thanks for reading my post extreamly sorry for very lengthy paragraph.
here i forget to inform that when i was installing winxp when i reached at devise installation session there i havnt press the motherboard i got a bulescreen error physical dump error. But when i tried by pressing motherboard i havnt given any error.
I have a Gateway MT6840 laptop. My laptop has not been dropped or experienced any liquid damage. One day it just would not turn on. It would not turn on with the battery removed and plugged in with power cord. Occassionally if I attempted to power it on, it would turn on for a few minutes and then shut off. I purchased a new battery and it worked for a little over a day. So then I purchased a new power cord and supply. The laptop then turned on for a day or so. Now it does not turn on and I don’t know what to check next. When you press the power on, nothing happens. What are the possible problems? I need help.
Take a closer look at the laptop DC jack. Does it look damaged or loose.
Try adjusting the AC adapter plug inside the DC jack and turn on the laptop. It’s possible you’ll be able to start the laptop if you find the right position for the AC adapter plug. If that’s the case, most likely the DC jack is loose and has to be resoldered. Here’s what I’m talking about:
Great page.Lots of useful information.
I have one problem with my Aspire 5710.
Problems occured few days ago.
Battery is long gone so laptop is allways conected to AC charger.
A few days ago laptop started to lose power sometimes but i was able to turn it on again.
Yesterday it was only able to turn on for about two seconds and then it would turn off again.
I got new AC adapter but the situation but now it doesnt stars at all.
I checked AC adapter and i have measured 19V.Laptop is dissasembled.I would like to check dc connector on the laptop but i dont know how.
Colud you give me some advice?
It is not the ussual dc conector. It looks like this.
The DC connector you showed is attached to the power cables which has a white connector. This connector plugged into the motherboard. You can test voltage on this connector.
Plug in the AC adapter and test voltage on the white connector. I guess the red wire is “+” and black one “-“.
If you get no voltage readings, it’s possible the DC jack (or connector cable) is damaged. Just buy a new DC jack connector and install it into the laptop instead of the old one. No soldering needed.
my laptop does not turn on i my battery is gone and i tested the AC adapter it’s voltage was as same as written on the adapter but the ampere was below it Have you any ideas
i have a compaq laptop . and the battery failed five month ago and i use only the AC . there were many times that light was interupting and it was not starting normaly, but when i pluged it of or when i start it was starting but yesteday, when i press the power light is coming but noting is happening , i have tryied romoving memory and hardisck and sealing them again but noting is happing.. there is not special noise that is making .. just normal sound at start up time.. any one who can help please ?? got stack in here
I don’t think you can test amperage while the AC adapter is not loaded. If the voltage is correct, I guess the AC adapter works properly.
What do you mean by “laptop does not turn on”?
Do you see any lights when AC adapter plugged in? Do you get any video on the screen at all?
If the laptop powers up but has no video on the screen, check the memory first. Try reseating memory modules. Try removing them one by one. One of the modules could be bad.
Did you try removing memory modules one by one? Try that first. Test the laptop with only one memory module in place. Try different slots.
actually my laptop was accident with me after that screen was craked and heat sink is removed . then i was repair heat sink and installed a new screen but after that my laptop is not restart and it is going hangup after some time like 1-2 hour, and most of time computer will not start then i have start this by pressing on mouse pad than it will start told me suggestion
Okay, so I was not as smart as I thought I was apparently and I tried to fix my laptop. I finally got the blue light to appear where the ac adapter goes and on the top of the laptop where the indicators are, but still no power, no fan, nothing. I think I may have moved the power on button thing somehow, because the top popped off. I have a Compaq Presario C700 and I am just frustrated. There are a lot of important things on this computer that I just can’t lose, so what do I do?
What was wrong with the laptop? Why did you want to fix it in the first place?
If the laptop power up and you get the power light but nothing else, this could be motherboard failure, CPU failure or memory failure.
I would suspect the memory first.
You can access and backup your files and here’s how:
1. Remove hard drive from the laptop. I believe your Compaq Presario C700 has a SATA hard drive.
2. You can connect your SATA hard drive directly to the PC. I assume you know how to do that. Laptop SATA hard drive uses same type of cables as a regular 3.5″ desktop SATA hard drive. Access your hard drive and backup data.
3. Alternatively, you can buy an external USB enclosure for SATA hard drives, install laptop hard drive into the enclosure and connect it to any other working computer via USB cable. Access your hard drive and backup data.
mylaptop keeps turning off.when i turn it on it comes for only not less than 6-7 sec then it goes off again
Hi, i’m having problems with my laptop. Windows does not boot properly. Every time I open my laptop, it always get stuck on the “Toshiba” logo and does not continue anymore. My uncle says that it has problems with the memory chip. He says that I should wipe it with my hands or clean it with an eraser. I did what he said, but my laptop still does not work. Any advice? Thank you.
Hi I am having problem with my laptop when I am starting it the windows xp screen comes and it only shows loading loading and my laptop dosen’t start I am having an compaq 610 laptop.

I have a sony vaio model vpceb34en having optical mouse problem.
actually in my hostel mw and my friends use to play lan games with wireless lan .but optical mouse in my laptop doesnot work when my laptop is in charge but it works finely when it is not in charge.the same problem is shown to all my frnds who were playing games in wireless lan with me.plzz help me
Here are a few things to try:
1. Remove the hard drive and try booting the laptop. Does it start properly without hard drive?
2. Try removing memory modules one by one. Test the laptop with each memory module individually. One of the modules could be bad.
Here are a few things to try:
1. Start the laptop and press on F8 when Compaq logo appears on the screen. It should take to to the boot menu. Try Last Known Good Configuration first.
2. If it doesn’t work. Try Safe Mode. If you can boot in Safe Mode, use System Restore and revert the system back to the time when it was working fine.
If nothing helps, I would suggest testing laptop hard drive and memory. One of them could be failing.
This could be hard drive related failure. Here’s something to try. Remove the hard drive and start the laptop. Can you bypass the Toshiba logo without hard drive installed? In some rare cases just reconnecting the hard dive might fix the problem.
Your uncle is correct. This also could be memory related failure. Do you have two memory modules installed in the laptop? Try removing them one by one. Test the laptop with each module separately. Will it boot when one of the modules removed?
First of all, I would test the AC adapter. It’s possible the AC adapter is dead and the battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the laptop.
Hi.. I’ve a HCL leaptop that not used about 2 months. and now it doesn’t start……..behaves as dead.
I’ve done the battery removing process, but no effect.is it prblm of memory or other’s?
plz suggest me……
I have a compaq presario v5000 I was knocked off of the arm couch and the fan works but nothing else does… no lights or anything… It was on when it got knocked off. I can plug the computer up and the fan cames on.. I can push the power button and nothing. I can hold the power button and nothing the fan always runs…. I got the disk drive out and the hard drive and one of the memory that I had installed just months before it got knocked off. I got the HP broadcom 54g MaxPerformance 802.11g out and tried to turn it on and the same only the fan and nothing else. The fan will not shut off, so I am thinking that it is the motherboard.. Maybe it shorted out.. I’m I on the right track.. I and trying to go to college and raise my 3 kids and really need my computer instead of borrowing.
I just replaced the non working motherboard with a brand new not refurbished one. I checked the processor…hard drive…and the memory on a different machine and they all work. I also checked the power adapter and it also works. My problem is that when I plug in the power, without touching any buttons, the lights come on and the fan starts but nothing else. The display and the hard drive never power up. Also, the power button and the wifi button light up on the bezel but they do not work. If I try to hold the power button nothing happens. The only way the lights will go out is if I pull the power from the machine. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.
my computer starts up and able to open internet but it keeps losing the light that i cant see the screen.need help
My Toshiba laptop which is under one month old turns on but won’t reboot. At first the start up issues screen came up, and I selected “system restore” and it began the process. Once the bar said it was finished, I selected “restart” and since then I get the Toshiba page when I turn it on, then it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner (although sometimes the cursor is not there). Though it’s a black screen, it’s on, there’s backlighting there.
when turn on my laptop no problem… but then when i restart it, it wont open anymore… i need to force shut down my laptop then turn it on again to be able to open again.
ELO ME GOT A BIG BIG PRO MY LAPTOP FELL DOWN N MY SCREEN BROKE ITS A SATELITE L 450 D_14 E N WANT TO KNW IF THE SCREEN CAN BE CHANGE AND WHERE CAN THAT BE DONE IN MAURITIUS AM N ADDICT OF THAT PLZZZZZZZZZ HELP
If it is an HP laptop that will not power ON or remain ON it will quite probably be the CPU pulling away from a distorted MB due to over-heating, it can be easily repaired by having the CPU firmly pushed back into the MB and the legs soldered in place.
The laptop suffers from truly poor air flow and cooling (so keep it off any soft surfaces when on), the dust and fibres soon coat the internals with a blanket, enough to cook the CPU and MB, the board distorts enough to lose contact with the CPU, takes roughly a year or so to get to that state depending on how and where you use the laptop. So once a year pay the money to have the insides cleaned out as hoovering will not work.
Did you mean to say GPU, not CPU? Yes, it’s a known issue with some HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 and other HP notebooks.
Again, I think you are confusing CPU with GPU (graphics procession unit).
Here’s how I was able to fix a few motherboards with the GPU failure: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2011/02/23/fix-laptop-motherboard-with-failed-nvidia-graphics-chip/
Hello, I have an ASUS k70ab laptop.
My laptop had some strange symptoms. It began by deciding not to turn on every once in a while, now it rarely, if ever, turns on. I’ve tried a multitude of things (removing battery, pressing power for 12 seconds, removing cmos and waiting 30 minutes, testing RAM in all different spots, using a RAM from a good laptop which is compatible) Basically, now the cpu fan no longer turns on when the laptop is plugged in. When I hit the power button, it sounds like the HDD starts spinning. The ‘plugged in’ and ‘charging’ light both come on fine.

Hello. I have a problem with my laptop (HP). I don’t want to bother my dad to bring it to the repair shop. You see, my laptop has this kind of dual desktops( if that’s what you call it), Windows and the other one is HP, where it says *splashtop* near the power-off button. The HP desktop starts first when I turn on my laptop. I like the Windows better so I click the *Start Windows* beside the Power Off button, but after the Windows XP logo (the one with the loading thingy below it) finishes, nothing happens, the monitor just stay black….. Is there any manual way to fix this?
P.S. I don’t know many about laptops and it’s devices…

1. I get the blue screen error
2. My screen shakes.
3. My battery is fine when its not plugged but when it is plugged in to my Win7 I get an icon with a red X on battery icon (this can be fixed but just pointing out an issue)
4. Before the screen disappeared on start up after hard reboot. I was using the computer normally and randomly I got funny colours and lines running across the screen and the mouse also wouldn’t respond.
After that I did a hard reboot and now I get the black screen on start up before the windows logo can even appear. I can hear the fan if that helps. To be honest I think it maybe a cause of me updating old or outdated drivers on the laptop :/
If it is situation 2 then I’ll get that addressed but still if anyone can point out what the problem maybe I’d be grateful.

Hi, just wanna ask. My laptop cannot on with battery in it but it can on without battery and with AC Power plugged in. And when I bring it to the shop to check, they say it is the motherboard problem. So they ask me wherether do you want to repair it or not? Is it worth it to be repaired? I live in Malaysia and they charge me RM300=USD100
my laptop lcd is coming black after restarting and totally nothing is appearing on the screen …but after 3 or 4 hours laptop is starting naturally..plz some1 give me the solution…this error is occuring after i reinstal the intel graphics media acclerator and restart it…..plz guys help me
I have an Aspire One D255E Series Notebook. I turn on my laptop one day after it being plugged into my phone and it goes into a Windows Error Recovery screen. I continue to repair. There is still an error for the Windows 7 repair. I called support for help and they had me start with safe mode and last good connection by pressing F8 repeatedly during the power up. This did not work. What else should I do or try? I can’t use an windows 7 restore disk (its an Notebook)
Probably it’s necessary to reinstall OS.
There is one more thing to try but it requires laptop disassembly.
You can remove the hard drive, connect it to another PC and run hard drive error checking (right click-properties-tools). It’s possible the error will be found and repaired.
If it doesn’t help, you’ll have to find an external DVD drive and reinstall OS. Or try reinstalling it from the recovery partition, if you have any on the drive.
Hi! I have an acer extensa 5620Z that doesn’t boot properly after I analyze and defrag my disk I can see the windows xp boot screen but after that my screen turns black and restart and repeats the same problem please help…
Here’s what you can try:
Boot laptop in safe mode. Press F8 when Acer logo appears and select Safe Mode. If the laptop boots in safe mode, try using system restore to revert OS back to the time when it was working fine.
Also, you can try Last Known Good Configuration option.
One more thing. You can remove the hard drive, connect it to a PC computer and scan hard drive for errors (right click on the hard drive – properties -tools).
I have tangent notebook. When I press power button on laptop, the light on power button stays on. The light of HDD lighting for 1-2 seconds and then switches off.
Can somebody help me please?
Did you check laptop memory? One of the memory modules could be bad.
Also, try starting the laptop without the hard drive. A failed hard drive may halt the laptop.
Upon supplying power, power supply indication LED glows. upon pressing start botton, the fan “starts” running and other LEDs of kayboard starts blinking. Soon after this(after about 2 secs) the blinking lights goes off and fan sound also stops. But after 2 or 3 seconds it starts automatically and the cycle goes on repeatedly. such starting nad stopping sequence does not stop.
To stop the laptop, I need to keep pressing power botton continiously. I have another HDD which is installed with same XP OS, drivers of this laptop and various softwares as a back-up. I repleced this spare HDD but, no change. Prior to this the CD drive icon was missing from my computer. Even it does not enter to BIOS mode as it quickly stops soon after it starts.
Can anybody mail me the possibilities?
@ B Mohanty,
This could be memory or motherboard failure.
Does your laptop have two memory modules installed? Try removing them one by one and try starting the laptop with only one memory module in place.
Try different memory modules in different slots.
If one of the modules is bad, the laptop should start properly when you remove it.
If the laptop fails with only one memory module in place, probably this is motherboard related failure. It’s unlikely that both memory modules failed at the same time.
Hi, I have a Toshiba NB200-110 and recently started giving me problems. I do put the laptop to hibernate alot and once in a while the booting process started to get stuck on the initial Toshiba screen each time I restarted the computer after an update. To solve this problem I always followed the same procedure: removed the battery and unplugged the laptop. Waited for 5 min and after this the laptop was back working normally. Yesterday I put the laptop to hibernate in the morning and in the evening when I tried to bring it back the laptop gave a blank screen. I tried the same procedure as before but the laptop got always stuck in the starting Toshiba welcome screen and did nothing from there. I also tried the F2 and F12 keys in different occasions to see if something would happen but it says wait a moment and gets stuck again. I also removed the memory slot and put it back again but nothing changed. I decided to leave the laptop overnight without battery and unplugged and in the morning the boot worked fine. I had to switch off my computer to go to work and now is not working again. Exactly the same problem as before. Could anyone assist me with this problem? Many thanks.
I would test the hard drive. It’s possible the hard drive has some errors.
You can remove the hard drive, attach to a PC and run disk error checking.
Also, you can run hard drive diagnostic while it’s installed into the laptop. Try Seatools drive test, it works well with many different hard drive brands.
I have a hp dv6458se notebook. I turn on my laptop and I can see all the lights lighting up. I hear some noise and it looks like its going to boot up, but suddenly it goes into reboot. Nothing is visible on the screen, not even the BIOS.
The cycle just keeps repeating.
I had this problem couple of months ago too and had shown it to a repair guy. He said it was a chip level problem and did some soldering and fixing after which it worked fine until now. I asked him for details then, but he just gave me tangential info and avoided it.
Any idea what could be wrong here? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I have DELL INSPIRON 1464 laptop being used for last 16 months. The problem has started a month back. The major problem is that the laptop doesn’t get started twice in a day. This means whenever I leave it for 12-24 hours unsused and try to start then it gets started but when I shut it down and try to start again it never gets started for another 12-24 hours. It doesn’t respond to AC supply when it is off but gets charged when it is on. I have even tried by removing the battery and supplying AC but it too don’t work. WIll you mind helping me find the solutions. Really worried with the problem.
Many Many Thanks.
I have hp probook 4420s.last time i shutdown it correctly.next day when i start it the power button blink for 5 seconds and stop.it did not show any respond. after sometime i remove the battery and other peripheral devices and hold the power button for some seconds to release the memory.but the problem did not resolve.and repeats the same problem please help………..????
thanks in advance……..
I have a dell. It starts up like normal with the dell logo and loads. The next screen is black with one line that blinks in the top left corner. Please help..
Hi, my acer aspire 2920 had a strange simptom. I’ve never found this before since im doing computer servicing. It boot properly. When i strike f2 option, its also fine even i left it in couples of hours. But when im doing the installation (installing new windows) its suddenly turn off. It keeps happen when i’m doing so. i’ve formated the HDD with others laptop but it still happen when im doing the new installation. Any suggestion??????
Could be overheating. It’s possible during Windows installation laptop uses more CPU resources and overheats because the heat sink is clogged with dust.
Try cleaning the heat sink (blow off the dust with compressed air) and try Windows installation again.
Hi, this message is for “B Mohanty”– I have an HP laptop with exactly the same symptoms (starts to run, then stops, then restarts, stops again, over and over again). I was wondering if the “memory stick removal trick” (suggested by cj2600 above) worked for you? I’m going to try it myself, but I’m curious if it helped you at all.
hi i use lenovo G560
when i start my notebook the power indicator blinks. but after a while it ll go off .it does n get booted . can u plz figure out the basic reason. i tried removing the RAM’s and cleaning it up. still did not work . no noises.just keeps off 🙁
Maybe the AC adapter failed? It’s possible the adapter is dead and the battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the laptop. First, I would tested laptop with another AC adapter.
If u have kind of the same problem as situation 2, try to clean the ram modules with some rubbing alcohol, the purer the better.
Take the ram modules out and place em on a piece of cotton, then use a cotton bud to clean the gold contacts. Wait for them to dry and place back in the slots.
Try running memtest86 and check results.
my laptop start to boot with window xp then blue screen appears for fraction of a second and again it goes to boot mode again same thing happens there is no errors or fan problem pl help
1. Run memory test. You can use Memtest86+ utility.
2. Run hard drive test. You can use Seatools utility from Seagate. Works well with many different hard drive brands.
If hard drive or memory fails, you’ll have to replace the failed part.
3. If hardware passes test, try reinstalling Windows XP.
I can log into my laptop however that is it. It won’t open anything – internet, excel, start menu…nothing! Any tips?
My laptop switches on but it keeps loading and won’t let me on to the home screen page.. The only options it gives is ”switches windows on normally” and ‘look for problems in windows’ what should I do ??
First of all, I would test the hard drive. You can run Seatools utility from Seagate. It works well with many different laptop drives.
If the hard drive passes test, probably you have corrupted OS. If that’s the case, backup all personal data and reinstall OS.
Have you tried both options? What happens if you choose the first option?
You can try the following. Turn on the laptop and press F8 before Windows OS starts loading. This will give you some options how to boot. Try Windows Repair. Also try Last Known Good Configuration.
Can you boot in Safe Mode? If you can try reverting Windows OS to the time when it was working properly using System Restore.
How I will know the hard disk, RAM and mother board details when the laptop doesnot boot. Please advise
My HP laptop wont start. It will power on for 1 sec and then power off itself. I got a new battery and a new heat sink but still it wont start. I also tried to start the laptop after draining all the battery and hold the power button for 30 secs then connected the ac plug. Yet it wont start. Can somebody help me figure out what’s wrong?
Also my Hp is now out of warranty period.
Not sure what your question is, but you should be able to remove the hard drive and memory and look for specs on those parts.
Did you test your laptop with another AC adapter. It’s possible your original AC adapter is dead and new battery doesn’t have charge.
If the AC adapter is good but the laptop still doesn’t start, probably this is motherboard related failure.
My laptop makes an extremely loud noise (coming from the fan) as soon as I power it up. When I hold onto the power button for about 1-2 seconds, it turns on but there is no display.
However, if I hold on the power button continuously, the laptop turns on then then it shuts down a few seconds later. After trying this about 4-5 times, it finally worked, and the laptop displayed and booted up normally.
In all instances, the laptop continued to make a loud fan noise and the power light was always visible. I have tried cleaning the fan and the inside but to no avail.
my laptop window 7 switches on but will not show the homescreen it keeps rebooting what should i do i tried last known good configuration
Are you sure this noise coming from the cooling fan and not the hard drive?
If it’s fan noise, you’ll have to replace the fan. I think you might have more than just bad fan but it’s hard to tell without testing the laptop.
Have you tried option “Repair Your Computer” ?
Hi my Dell laptop won’t boot up.
The problem started 2 weeks ago. When I press the power button the left side LED light turns on, but nothing actually boots, the screen stays black. So I tried rebooting it several times at first, just out of frustration, and it worked for a while. However when Windows would finally load, I had to reset the clock setting (I’m guessing an internal battery issue). The laptop would worked as long as I didn’t shut down the laptop (restarting right away would work), or as long as it wasn’t inactive long enough, otherwise, the same situation would happened. Now, 2 weeks later, rebooting it several times just doesn’t work. Could it just be an internal battery problem, or could it also be an AC adapter problem on top of that? I don’t think it could be a memory issue since it would work fine once booted. What do you think? I would like to know before I spend money on a new AC adapter.
It’s hard to tell. I would start with cheap replacement parts – internal CMOS battery. Hopefully in your laptop the battery is not soldered to the motherboard.
If you give me the laptop model number, I might point you to the right place with disassembly instructions if they are available.
I have HP DV5 pavilion 1134-TX for 3 years. My battery does not able to retain charge. Since few days, I found that laptop does not start. The power charge LED glows but none of other indicator LED lights up. I can only able to start laptop if I remove battery and remove power then hold power-on button for more than 15 seconds, then replug AC supply and press power-on button (while battery is not connected).
What is the exact problem? Any help is highly anticipated.
Will it work properly if you remove the battery and run just from AC adapter? Will it start properly each time?
If yes, it’s possible the battery is bad and shorting the whole system or there is a problem with the motherboard.
You cannot tell if it’s bad battery or motherboard without testing the laptop with another known good battery.
Hi, my laptop starts up when i press the power button but goes straight to a black screen that gives me 2 options either start windows normally which takes me back to the same screen after loading again or windows repair which takes me back to the same screen in a second. My friend switched my laptop off when it was updating after a shutdown now this is all i can get up, i’ve tried a few things and they dont work and i dont have the disc that restarts the laptop from scratch.(im not interested if i can keep my data that was already on or not just need help on how to get onto the windows home screen
What is your laptop brand and model. It’s possible the laptop has hidden recovery partition.
Here’s something to try.
1. Turn off the laptop.
2. Press on “0” (zero) button and hold it down. At the same time press on the laptop power button.
3. When logo appears on the screen, you can release the “0” button.
On some laptop models this loads image from the hidden partition. If it does, follow the guide to reinstall Windows OS. Does it work for you?
I have a toshiba E series laptop, about 6 years old which
got a virus a fortnight ago. I’ve reloaded windows XP and service pack 3. (also reloaded MSoffice and newly downloaded bitdefender 2012)
When i boot up now, after a while the hard drive makes a repetitive clicking sound – which starts at different stages of booting – and then basically hangs.
This happens in all forms of booting, Safe mode, etc.
@ dan s,
I guess your hard drive was on a verge of failure before you reinstalled the operating system.
Reformatting the hard drive just was the last straw.
Sounds like you’ll have to replace the hard drive.
Hey I have hp pavillion dv6700 laptop that is a couple years old. I dropped it and it made a funny grinding noise and turned off. Now when I turn it on it sounds like the fan is turning on but not the cpu at all, it doesn’t boot up.
Grinding noise? Maybe the hard drive went bad?
What if you remove the hard drive and start the laptop without it? Does it start this way?
hi! I have a Sony Vaio Model # VGN-FZ240E and the problem is that it starts up normally but it requires to click the user name to begin. Unfortunately, there’s no user name button or any button that shows on the screen. The only things that appear on the screen are the phrase “to begin, click user name” and a shutdown button . I have been trying to troubleshoot it but there’s no available information about this problem. Hope you could help me. Thank you and God bless!
Sounds like a problem with the operating system.
Here’s something to try.
Turn on the laptop and when Sony logo appears on the screen press the F8 key. This should take you to the screen with boot options. Try Last Known Good Configuration first.
If it doesn’t work, try Safe Mode. If the laptop boots in Safe Mode, try System Restore and revert the OS back to the time when it was working fine.
I have an HP Powerbook 6455b that suddendenly won’t power on. When I plug it in, there is an amber indicator light for the battery which blinks constantly but no other noises or display output.
What happens if you remove the battery and plug the AC adapter when the battery removed? Does it still blink?
I have an Acer laptop. When I connect it to the charger, the LED light on the charger lights on but the LED light at the computer does not light on! The computer could not be started too when the ‘power on’ button is pressed! I have changed to a different charger/adapter as well as the cable from charger/adapter to the computer but still the computer does not start up. Need advice.
@ A. Mayakrishnan,
Sounds like a problem somewhere inside the laptop.
Most likely it’s either bad DC jack (socket where you plug the AC adapter) or motherboard failure. It’s hard to tell without opening the laptop.
I have a dell inspiron 1525. When I turn my laptop on it comes to a screen displaying:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2.Choose your language setting, and then click Next
3.Click repair your computer
If power was interrupted during startup, choose start windows normal(use the arrow keys to highlight your choice)
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Last known good configuration (advanced)
Start windows normally
If I click on any of these options. The screen turns black.
I got a laptop Neo E4121 that suddenly shut down and won’t power on again.when i plug in the charger the power and charging light is turning on with color orange but when i press the turn on button the light turns to green and it turned off.i really need some advice with this.
I had situation 2! The computer was working fine until reboot. Then it didnt work anymore. I took away the battery and took out the ac cable for 2 minutes. Then put the battery back and plugged in the ac cable. I was suprised it worked!
please need some reply on my post no.606.:(
Have you tried that?
Also, I would suggest running Dell hardware diagnostic.
Turn on the laptop. When Dell logo appears on the screen press the F12 button. This will take you to the boot device menu. The last option should be Diagnostics. Click on it and run hardware test.
If everything passes, probably you have corrupted Windows OS.
You can backup your data with an external USB hard drive and reinstall OS from scratch.
Are you using an original AC adapter or it’s a replacement adapter.
First, I would test the laptop with another known good adapter.
i am using an original AC adapter adn its still working because when i plugged in it the led light of power and charging is still working.but evrytime i press the power on button light light just disappear.
Remove the battery and try starting the laptop just from AC adapter. If it still doesn’t turn on, probably this is motherboard related failure.
I have an Acer that is “looping” I start it up and very quickly I see F2 to setup. Not sure how to use that function. It gives me two options: Start Windows Normally and Safe Mode Start up. Safe Mode just ends up being a blue screen with graphics, nothing else for over 2 hours. The Start up Nomally ends up looping again to the two options. Any advice? I’ve looked into purchasing BootSuite so it can open my frozen laptop. Thank you.
yeah.still doesn’t work.I already went to the technician.hope they can fix it well.:D thanks anyway.i earned lot’s of ideas here.:D
This could be software or hardware related failure. It’s hard to tell what is causing the problem without running some diagnostic tests.
1. Download Ultimate Boot CD. Burn this utility on a CD. Boot laptop from this bootable CD.
2. Run memory test. I’m using Memtest86+. If memory gives you errors, replace failed memory.
3. Run hard drive test. I’m using Seatools for many different drives. If hard drive fails, replace the drive.
4. If memory and hard drive pass test, try reinstalling OS from scratch. Before running restore don’t forget to backup your files.
i tried to do as you instructed to solve my laptop fujitsu siemens v5535. But still i have not get a solution any more info please.
problem: when i switch on, it receive the power coz power and bettre leds are on and HDD runs. But nothing display in the screen.
i have a tropix notebook. but when i press the power button,it doesn’t start. i have done all the above checks but it has still failed to power up. wat could be the problem
Did you test the laptop with an external monitor? Can you see the external image?
@ Najja Nasiif,
1. Failed power button.
2. Failed DC jack (laptop not getting any power from AC adapter).
3. Failed motherboard.
I assume you tested the AC adapter and it’s OK.
My laptop, a Toshiba P500 is faulty. It will boot past post and as soon as it reaches the “Windows Starting” logo splash (WIN 7), it will freeze and it will stay like that for hours. I changed the hard disk, the memory modules, I tried to re-install the OS, I tried to boot off a Linux Live CD and Live USB and USB DVD Drive, but all to no avail. I change the configuration on the BIOS, then reset it to default, again to no avail. Do you think it is a MB fault or CPU or GPU?
@ Saracen Sam,
It looks like you went through all basic and intermediate troubleshooting steps but it didn’t fix the problem.
At this point I think there could be a problem with the motherboard/GPU. Most likely the GPU chip integrated into the motherboard, so it’s one unit.
I have an old laptop NEC Versa P520. It works fine before until know it wont start. When I press the power button led lights up but wont start when i release the button led light off. I leave the laptop for a week and i try on switch on and its booted but and errors occured in cmos. I press F2 for cmos maintenance set it it to default and it works. But when i shut down windows seems to be hang for a long time and I cut the power off. When i tried to switch on again i face the same problem again. Please help.
Hello, i did all the checks and whatever. I own a compaq laptop, but still it cannot fix. The light and battery etc was light on, but when i press the on button it does not works, how to fix ?
don’t know if anyone’s still looking at this, but I have a laptop problem that I can’t afford to solve professonally. It’s a dell/packard. it has gone from no problems at all, ro simply not starting. If I plug it out and take the battery out for a while, when I plug it back in the blue light will shine – until I press something, then it will disappear. So while there still seems to be life in the old dog, it still isn’t turning on. I’ve read quite a few posts and no-one else seems to be having the same experience. If I take the battery and mains away for long enough. once I plug it in the blue light shines again – but as soon as I hit the on button…it disappears…
well any soul who could shine light on the matter….grately appreciated x
This could be memory failure. If you have two memory modules installed, you can test the laptop with each memory separately.
Have you tried replacing RAM modules?
1. Test your AC adapter. Make sure it works and outputs correct voltage. It’s possible the laptop doesn’t turn on because the AC adapter is dead and the battery doesn’t have any charge left (maybe just enough to turn on the LED).
2. If the AC adapter works fine, probably you have failed motherboard.
My laptop starts up fine, when i click my user and log on, it just says welcome for ages. this is in safe mode, i have tried safe mode and normal mode but i cannot log on whatsoever
It’s hard to tell what’s going on. Could be software issue. Could be hard drive failure.
In cases like that I test laptop hard drive and memory first.
If both pass test, I boot laptop from Ubuntu CD and see if it works in there. If it does, most likely there is a problem with Windows OS. Try reinstalling Windows OS.
When I turn on the pc it says
XWNOB is compressed
Press Ctrl+Alt+Dlt to restart
then it keeps repeating to this message when I press it
@ Ann Saints,
I have no idea what this message means. By the way if you google it, you’ll get no results.
Please check the spelling.
Hello, I have a ACER Extensa laptop, running vista. When I press the power button Fan and hard drive comes on then beep sound twice then turns off. It does this again a 2nd time. When the hard drive turns iff it makes a slight soft click at the end. No video on the screen at all. I tried removing batt and starting with only power supply nothing. As well as removing ram and testing each one, nothing. Like I said fan and harddrives comes on twice for 5seconds. Any suggestion, thanks.
@ Joseph Schneider,
Have you tried starting the laptop without the hard drive? Maybe the hard drive failed and because of that the entire system cannot start.
If you get the same problem even with the hard drive removed, most likely this is some kind of motherboard failure.
Hi, i have a problem with my acer i recently bought a new charger from ebay for it my other one broke.. and when i used it first time it worked then when i turned my laptop of and used it again it come up on the black screen what says ..
launch startup replair recommended or
start windows normally
iv tryed doing both and the first one says..
if you have recently attached a device to this computer, such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restard computer. if you continue to see message contact system administrator or computer manufactor for assistance.
and the second one just restarts the computer and goes back to that screen
i have tryed clicking view advanced options for system recovery and i restored my laptop back to a few weeks ago, but it didnt change the startup and iv removed all my files and put on back up in these options and i tryed to click another option to do with my files and it said i have no files.. im really upset because all my pictures with my mum who passed away and with my friends are on that laptop iv also tryed all the other options but it dosent make any diffrence i still carnt get onto my laptop ..iv tryed all the F buttons when it starts up and iv tryed the safe mode but it still didnt start up
do you know what i can do to get it back on or to get my photos back… by e.g taking my hard drive out and putting it in another laptop or anything?
I have an acer aspire 5551-2382 and unfortunatly I slammedthelid cloed and next time I tried o start it it said something about opeating system not found. I uninstale windows 7 and reintaled it again but still windows wont load. Tried a million things not sure what todo cuz warranty is already up. please tell me this isnt an expensive fix.
I don’t think this is related to your new adapter.
Usually you get this message if there is a problem with the operating system or the laptop wasn’t turned off correctly.
If neither option worked, it’s possible your Windows OS is corrupted or there is a problem with the hard drive.
I cannot tell witch one is the culprit without looking at the laptop. In cases like that I always run hard drive test.
If the hard drive still works properly or doesn’t have too many errors, you should be able to use an external USB enclosure.
Have you tried reconnecting the hard drive and reseating memory modules?
I would try that first.
If it doesn’t help, I would run diagnostic tests on the hard drive and memory modules.
You can download Ultimate Boot CD image and burn it on a CD. This utility have multiple diagnostic tools for memory and hard drive.
For memory I use Memtest86+.
For hard drive I usually use Seatools.
Never opened a latop up in m life. by that do you mean take te hhd out and pu it back in again?
Normally the hard drive can be easily access on the bottom of the laptop.
Sometimes reseating the hard driver (disconnecting from the motherboard and connecting back) helps. I’m not sure if it will help in your particular case but mentioned it just in case.
If you were able to reinstall Windows 7 and it didn’t complain about missing hard drive, probably it’s connected properly.
I would definitely test the hard drive. Maybe it’s going bad.
how do i run diagnostics without windows? and thank you for helping me.
1. Download Ultimate Boot CD image and burn it on a CD.
2. Boot your laptop from that CD. You don’t need Windows for that.
3. Run memory and hard driver test. You’ll have to do some reading on how run those utilities but it’s not that difficult.
For memory I use Memtest86+.
For hard drive I usually use Seatools.
I cant believe my laptop is so messe up like I didnt close it that hard. Somehow Ive managed to access CHKDSK…. said one of my disks may have errors and procedes to scan but I couldnt read the results before it finnished and auto restarterd my cmputer. Does this shed any light on the situation? Also when I try starting windows with command prompts it gets stuck at loading windows/system32/DRIVES/CLASSPNP.SYS
now says windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software changw might be the cause to fix insert windows disk and restart and choose repair your computer
info windows failed to load because the system registry file is missng or corrupt
I dont have the indows 7 disk just the product key but i have xp will that work or will i have even more probleems? I am downloading the cd you suggested but it will take 9 hrs. do you think that cd will help with this problem?
I have an acer aspire 5551-2382 and i slammed the lid shut. next time I tried to start it it said the operating system cound not be found. I uninstalled windows 7 and reinstalled it but still it wont open windows. i tried opening windows using last known good configuration 2 or three times. it did a dskchk and now Says windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt.
It’s possible the hard drive is failing.
Did it come with Windows 7 originally installed? If yes, you should be able to purchase restore disc from Acer.
Or you can find an OEM version of Windows 7 disc, install it and activate using Windows 7 key from the bottom of the laptop.
My Acer Aspire 5750 wont start, i mean when i press the power button, the power LED just blink 3 times and then off again. I tried it, it behaves the same. So what should i do? as i have Important documents on the drive.
Please help me out?
my laptop turns on but then it the screen just goes black and it doesnt do anything else , what should i do ?
@ Mohanmed Jalloh,
Did you have a chance to test the AC adapter. It’s possible the AC adapter died and the battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the laptop.
If the adapter is good, try removing memory modules. Maybe one of the modules failed and the laptop will start properly when you removed the failed module.
As a last resort you can backup data using an external USB enlosure.
Most likely you have a SATA hard drive in your laptop. It means you’ll need an enclosure for SATA drives.
Alternatively, it’s possible to connect laptop SATA hard drive directly to a PC. It’s using same SATA cables.
Take a very close look at the screen.
Is it really black AND blank or you still can see a very faint image?
Did you test the laptop with an external monitor?
At what point the screen goes black? Do you see any image on the screen before that?
my dell vostro 3500 displays ‘updating itself and reverting changes’ when power button is switched on.please help
Let it finish. Maybe the laptop is recovering from unsuccessful update install. Sometimes it might take a while.
My Dell Latitude E6500 has problems booting. I turn it on and it usually give me the option to start it up on Safe Mode, Advanced Mode, Normal Mode, and ect., but everytime i try to start it up it doesnt get past the Windows Screen so I can’t even log on to atleast scan it. This even repeates as i restart it. What do you think i should do?
Turn on the laptop, press F12 and select Dell diagnostics. Run Dell diagnostics. Make sure there is no problem with the hard drive or memory.
If no problem found, probably there is a problem with your Windows OS.
You can backup data with an external USB enclosure:
After all data is backed up you can try reinstalling OS from scratch.
Hope it helps.
My laptop starts up but it says the laptop has shut down because of overheating and can only go up to (90d)
then the screen just goes black and nothing works.
(P.S.i play video games on my laptop and i cant hold a keyboard button and aim at the same time how can i fix this and i dont know how to spell the name of it but it sounds like sen-si touch.)
Maybe the cooling fan failed? Can you hear the fan spinning before the laptop turns off?
Antonio Da Silva
My Acer Aspire 5738PG will not boot. Power button lights up, fan starts, but no booting. I have tried to replace the RAM’s but no success. It won’t even beep when i insert the power cable, even though the charging led blinks on.
Anything else I should do?
António Da Silva
My laptop is not getting started. I have removed its battery for a while but still its not getting started. Its shows power light but it went off after few seconds
please guide me
@ Antonio Da Silva,
Sounds like possible motherboard failure.
You can try taking it apart to barebone system as I explained here: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2008/06/14/laptop-dead-troubleshoot-the-problem/
@ dr nad,
First, I would test the AC adapter. It’s possible the AC adapter failed and the battery discharged.
You should be able to test voltage on the AC adapter with a voltmeter.
I have a dell studio laptop, with the T5800 2.0 duo processor.
I switch it on and after the Microsoft loadin screen it takes me to the automatic startup repair.
And it checks for problems and says it cannot automatically repair. Then it shows shutdown or restart the computer. I restart and it comes to the same situation! The same is the case if I shutdown and start it again.
What do I do? Please advise.
Hi, I have a Dell XPS M1530 and I had a problem with it, than it can power on. While push a on button it look normal but after 3-4 sec it seems nothing happen except led power indicator at front beside the SD slot. After a few minutes the fan start spinning but nothing else happen. I already try the solution for situation no 2 but still same. Hope you could give me some advice to solve this problem. TQ
1. Run Dell diagnostic utility and test the hard drive. This could be bad hard drive.
2. If hard drive passed test, probably Windows OS corrupted.
If can try connecting the laptop hard drive to another computer and run disc check.
It’s not very clear. Are you getting any image on the laptop screen at all?
my Laptop is not booting and gives the following error massage: PGOUY compressed Press alt +CTRL+ Del to restart.
how can I fix it?
I have a Sony Vaio, 2009 model I beleive. When I press the power button to turn it on, I see the company Vaio logo and then the screen goes blank and the computer restarts. This process repeats and doesn’t stop. The indicator lights turn on and flash and the fans start spinning, but the laptop itself will not boot up.
What if you go to the BIOS setup manu? Will it stay on while in the BIOS?
Also, when you seel Sony logo press on F8. Can you select and boot in Safe Mode?
I have a acer aspire 5532 I beleive. When I press the power button to turn it on, I see the company acer logo and then the screen goes blank with a cursor and the stay here. Hi, My Alienware is not starting up.
When I pressed the power button, all the lights (Keyboad, Logo, Function Keys) are on but the screen is completely black.
If press the button again, it will shut off instantly but if I don’t press shut off and close the lid instead. While open it back, nothing happen except when I press the power button, it won’t shut down now matter how long I waited and the only way to shut it down is to hold the power button.
But when closing the lid, if I leave for about 1 minute and then force it to shutdown, and press power button again, the window will start normally.
If I don’t follow this closing lid step, no matter how many time I press the power button to shut down and start, the laptop won’t start.
This happened after I re-installed my Windows 7 X64bit Home.
My Model is Alienware M17x R3 3D Nvidia.
when i start my leptop dell n5010 then window 7 automaticaly going “file repaird”..
@ Deepak Arora,
Test the hard drive. It’s possible the hard drive is failing.
You can run Dell diagnostic utility, it has the hard drive test built in
Turn on the laptop, press F12 and select diagnostics.
When I start my inspiron 1545, there is no longer any display of the windows thingy(thanks to logon studio stuff).. I wait till the login screen shows up to know its booted… Sometimes that screen never shows up.. So I wait.. Then it restarts the boot: the dell sign and blue bar again. Then the black screen then the login.. Whats going on?
Can you see the Dell logo on the screen all the time? Does the problem appear only when Windows OS starts loading?
I’m thinking maybe you have a problem with Windows OS. You can try reinstalling the OS from scratch.
Hi, when I start my Vaio it stops on the welcome loading screen and never changes. So I booted it on safe mode and found some defected files and deleted them but the problems is still there.
What shall I do? Thanks
my dell vostro 1015 laptop sometimes starts in a proper way, sometimes it will not, sometimes it will catch the restart command, but sometimes it will not, when my computer will not started then i wait for 2 hour and then it will start,
when it starts up,it will never stops atomically but after that it may or may not be accept the restarted command ,
what is the problem in my comuter
Removing one of the memory modules fixed the problem. Just turned it off, put the second module back in and everything works perfectly. I’m curious as to why the problem came about in the first place, and why this was the solution.
hi, when i start my laptop it’s ask for window start normally after that a windows icon appear’s this process stop in between and then shows the blue screen and then restart computer automatically this process is going on until i shut down my laptop
This could be hardware or software related problem and you cannot tell which one is causing the problem until you run some basic diagnostic tests.
Here’s what you can try:
1. Test laptop memory. You can use Memtest86+ diagnostic utility.
2. Test laptop hard drive. Run built-in diagnostic test and download diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacture’s website and run it.
It’s likely that memory or hard drive is failing and causing the BSOD errors.
If both pass test you can try some quick software fixes. Turn on the laptop and press F8.
1. Start laptop in Safe mode. Can you?
2. Try Last Known Good Configuration. Does it fix the problem?
If the laptop has same BSOD error in Safe mode and LKGC doesn’t work, probably this is Windows OS related failure.
Try reinstalling the OS from scratch. If you have any important data on the hard drive back it up first using an external USB enclosure.
My toshiba only starts when it wants, the battery and ac lights work fine, but when i try to start up only the power light starts. The screen doesnt show anything, same with a external monitor. What can i do?
when i start my laptop lenovo b575 window 7 it stuck up in the log on screen..
My Computer starts up and asks me start windows
Normally or Launch start up repair( recommended) if I
Click on startup repair and continuously loads attempting
Repairs because it asked me for Restoration to be carried out
If I click on start windows normally it starts to go on but it just
Appears with a black screen. I tried doing this loads of times
But it won’t do anything different. I tried ejecting the cd drive
But it made no difference
I can’t fix it?
My inspiron 1525 suddenly crashed showing memory dump once. Then I tried to reboot it, but it dint boot. Even the bios screen did not show up. Only the power sign is on and on pressing the power button the DVD drive makes a noise.
What would be the problem in this case and what can i do to get rid of it?
@ Rajib Mondal,
Could be memory failure. You have two memory installed in your laptop, right? Try removing them one by one and start the laptop with only one memory module installed. Try different slots. If one of the memory failed, the laptop will start properly with another one.
I just want to check if you have any suggestion for a Thinkpad A1 laptop. It is not booting up. The hdd indicator is not lit but you can hear the fan spinning. I have tried removing and resetting the memory module but same problem. External monitor – did not work as well.
Thanks for the suggestion.
My acer aspire 5542 had a dead or black screen and I used hard reset method to solve it but when I shut it down the dead screen problem is now back. When I turn it on the power comes, all leds are on, the hard drive spins, the fan will turn shortly and go off and turns for a while repeatedly. Could you help me with this?

One more thin as I connect the power supply/ charger/ ac adapter the led on the ac adapter blinks repeatedly unlikely it was when the laptop was in good condition the led was not blinking.

THANK YOU!!!! Dropped my LIFE (laptop) yesterday but it stayed on and worked fine so I thought everything was ok. Got up this AM, and it wouldn’t boot. It would light up, but not boot all the way.
Found your website on my ipad, read your very clear instructions and after re-seating the memory sticks, WOOHOOO…it’s back up. Just wanted to say thank you!
I have a problem similar to sitaution 3
When i turn on my laptop, only 1 LED lights up which indiactes it is on but the other LED which indiactes the laptop is working does not light up. The screen continues to be black and there is no noise,no beeps and no rotating of fans. Please help!
@ Ishan patel,
As I mentioned in my post, try reseating memory modules.
You can try removing memory modules one by one and test the laptop with only one module installed. One of the modules could be bad.
If it doesn’t help, I’m afraid this could be motherboard related issue.
Check out how to troubleshoot dead laptops.
When I start up my laptop it boots till there is a black screen with the mouse on it but stops after that. Any ideas on what this could be, thanks.
Have you tried “Safe Mode”?
Start the laptop and when logo appears on the screen press the F8 key. Select Safe Mode and press enter. Can you boot to the desktop in Safe Mode?
When press the power button it makes some noise and does nothing what do I do
is it button problem r laptop. Problem …..
Please help me
If you push on the power button and the laptop turns on (even though has no video), it’s not the button problem.
Does it stay on?
sir my laptop appears to be dead. when plug the AC adapter but the LEDs (power light, hard drive light, battery charge light, etc…) do not light up and the laptop will not react at all if you press on the power button.
Did you have a chance to test the AC adapter with a voltmeter? Maybe it’s bad?
sir my laptop appears to be dead .When I plug in the AC adapter the LED comes on.When I press the power button the power LED comes on for about ten sec but then nothing happens the machine won’t start up.The LCD remains off also. What am I suppose to do pliz help.Computer type Lennovo
Here’s what you can try.
Remove the hard drive, optical drive, wireless card (if you can).
After that test the laptop with only one RAM module installed. Try different modules.
If the laptop still doesn’t boot, probably this is motherboard failure.
Thank u so much cj2600. Situation 2 worked on my hp pavilion dv5 laptop. Thank u again. 👍
I pressed the power button and ON normally, but after displaying the Brian logo, instead of it to boot up and display desktop background, it shows a black 1, and written on it is…
[ BOOTMGR is compressed
press Ctrl Alt Del to restart]
Check out these options to fix the “BOOTMGR is compressed”.

Thank you SO much.
I have an Acer v3-771-9665, i7 intel 2630QM ethos has 4 slots for gb I think max is 16gb, windows 8.1, I took the fan out to clean it , now all it does is the lights will come on when you push the power button it will light up then turn off then start blinking? can anyone help? thanks
Check RAM modules. Make sure all of them seated properly. Try reseating all RAM modules.
You’ll have to try turing it on with an external monitor attached and check the external video output. If you have the same problem on the external monitor, this is motherboard/graphics card related failure.
If external video output works correctly and shows normal image, most likely you have a problem with the laptop screen or display cable.
Probably the smoke came from the video cable. I guess it got damaged and shorted. I would try replacing it first.
I formated the HD and set to boot from CD/DVD on my HP Pavilion laptop. I placed the W7 disk inside CD/DVD…It only boots into a black screen and blinking cursor. What can I do?
Maybe your optical drive not working properly and cannot read the disc?
Try this. Turn on the laptop and press F9 key as soon as HP logo appears on the screen. This will take you to boot menu.
Select the optical drive and press enter. Maybe this will force the laptop to boot from the CD.
my laptop doesnt boot up.. When i push the power button, no light (except for the power button) , blackscreen, i already put the charger.. what should i do?
1. Try removing RAM modules one at a time. Test the laptop with each module. One of them can be bad.
2. Try turning it on without the hard drive connected. Can you boot to the logo screen with the drive removed?

Hope you can help! I have a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. Starts up but have vertical bar towards center almost black otherwise blue gray screen, horizontal small lines. External monitor shows no signal. When power on power light on, hard drive blue light flickers. Get the 3 tones for windows starting. Have tried F8 an F12, get nothing. If hold “D” and turn on do get different colored screens = OK.
Have tried memory sticks (2) using one, moving, etc. Tried starting without hard drive. Checked CMOS battery. Reseated CPU under heat sink. Tried heating with hair dryer that area. Thinking its Nvidia. Is that the same as the chip under heat sink? (It has a bunch of pins on the bottom.). Considering heating more/hotter. PC been down for a month. Desperate! Just found your site. Thanks
My Toshiba Satellite has a problem. I noticed the battery was draining while charging and I waited to see how it would end up and finally, it shut down the laptop suddenly. I tried to troubleshoot and replaced the 2 RAM sticks but it didn’t start. However, I noticed that the white power LED was blinking. I removed the battery and tried to boot but the power LED kept blinking. I connected the battery back and the amber light came up indicating that the battery was charging. But when i push the power button, the laptop shut down abruptly. Weeks prior to this, the laptop had a fault that required me to re-seat the RAM sticks and it came up. i don’t know if this last piece of info would help in any way, but please, kindly let me know what you think could be the problem and what can be done. Thank you.
My laptop is not opening at all ,, I removed the battery , pressed on the power button for 30 sec and then I plugged it in ,, IT OPENED and I closed it and it won’t open any more ,, please help me my laptop is new 🙁

Hi, You just save me and my money sir. For your information, my old hard disk of my laptop is corrupted. So, My friend and I tried to replaced with the new one. After replacing the hard disk and as soon as I pressed the power button, the hard disk LED bleep once but the screen goes blank and hard disk not even produced a sound. Then, my friend try to suggest that the battery in the motherboard could be empty because it couldn’t supply the BIOS. So, we went to nearest shop to buy new battery. After we opened the laptop’s casing and replaced the battery, the problem still same as before. After he silent for awhile, he said to me that it could be motherboard that cause the problem. He said the repairing the motherboard could cost a lot of money. At that moment, I felt so hopeless but my heart won’t give up. Then, I tried to search through Google. I’ve read a lot of problem and solution from many forum but the problem not as same as my problem that I’ve faced until I found your article and it give me some hopes. I read your article until finished and I found that my problem is quite a bit with the 2nd situation. Then, I realized that when we replacing the hard disk, my friend checking the memory slot and said to me that I have 1 more memory slot which can be upgraded and he remove it to look at it. So, after I read your article, we tried to reseated the memory again and ‘boom’, my laptop screen appeared and we able to install the windows as usual. Thank you sir, you just save my laptop and wherever you are now, I feels I kind of owe you something. Thanks once again that is all I can give to you and so I wrote this comment so that everyone can read and I can remember your kindness for sharing this valuable information. Regards, You are my life savor! 😀
Normally laptop after usage for few years gives starting problem due to deposit of invisible dust particles betwwen chips pin etc. Thorough cleaning might solve the problam but we have to remove the mother board. During cold weather moister accumulates due to absorbtion by dust and may make contacts between pins of the chip(also may get charged). Easiest way to start without removing battary, to use a hair dryer and warm the back side of the laptop for one minute through the ventilation holes or keep a 60 watts bulb for some time to warm the laptop. after few seconds you can start the laptop .it will start boost. most of the electronic items with chips have this problem even the AVR of generators. I hope you will get best result witout removing battary
I have a situation between 1 and 2. My laptop won’t turn on, no matter what, but the light indicates it’s getting power from the AC adaptor. Im looking for a way to force it to boot up so I can get into the bios and see what I can do.
Dear charly, My toshiba C600 satellite laptop had your problem ,system get the power but want boost and frequently I have to remove the battary and AC adopter .It want work with out battary on AC adopter alone. Since it had to receive clock signal from the battary. After starting, battary can be removed to work in AC.First you remove the AC adopter. Warm the laptop as said for a minute using hair dryer directing fan out put ventilation hole or to the other holes for a minute. Then on the laptop without AC adopter. After boosting put the AC aopter. Now my laptop works wihout problem. Normaly when the fan operates hot air comes out but fresh air enters with dust particles. If the system not response you may try the soft wear problems.
according to your story when changing to your generator I hope the frequency of your generator is not at 50 or 60 HZ and may be low . When the frequency is low the impedence of the power circuit will be affected(SMPS type). So you please check your AC adopter whether it works properly check the voltage and out put current by using 12 or 24 volt car head light or parking bulbs. This is only to check momentarily whether your adopter could provide required power. Or use another good AC adopter. The generators could provide required voltage By AVR system but the frquency is determined by Engine speed(or Prime mover)
I wish to inform you that the same problem was prevailing in my daughters toshiba laptop nearly 6 months old. Unnecessarily my daughter wasted money in changing new processer . But the problem was not solved when she use some engineering softwear. I have opened the laptop and observed that the MOSfet transistor getting warm up severely. I used a heat sink and it was nice now. Therefore please check some parts in laptop is getting warm severely including processer. If it so please clean it or try to cool it by using heat sink etc.
please chek your laptop input power detail in the laptop back side or catlogue. And use the Charger(AC adopter) accordingly .You use a multimeter set to read in Killohms and use the terminals (positive and negative) input of the power supply to the laptop. It should read high resistance (may be above 1K in either way when changing the polarity) If it shows nothing ,some thing has happened. If it shows less than 1K again there may be short. So when using a new charger better to use a one ampear (according to the data of the laptop) fuse to your out put of charger and input of the laptop and try. Your charger IC could be replaced. But again please check whether the charger is accordingly to the laptop datas
according to your story the battary is not getting charged. When you operate with AC adopter part of the current goes for charging but laptop works in AC aopter. Unless if you remove the adopter the battary start to supply. This is I have noticed in My Toshiba c600 satellite laptop. Please check your battary with another battary or your adopter or your power supply section of the laptop. Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-1AD. My problem started about 9 months ago. When booting everything proceeded as normal and then after about 10 seconds it froze. Holding the power button down to turn off and then restart allows booting but then another freeze after 20 seconds. Repeating the process allows successful start and computer runs fine. I have been doing this for the last 9 months but the problem is gradually getting worse. It now takes about 5 or 6 restarts to get the system up and working.
I have renewed the HDD and Memory.
Once the computer is going it works very well all day without issues.
The system retains date and time information.
Can anyone help?
