How can I adjust brightness on my Aspire 5610-2089 lap top screen?

Hello ail,
My Aspire 1350 does not start up anymore. It has had a slow HDD, and often hang up, so i had to power it off, then I was able to reboot.
Tonight, after powering it off, I cannot start it up again, When I press the power button,
-power lump lights
-no fans spin
-HDD lump blinks once
-CDROM makes noise
I tried the reset button and removing the battery - no difference, It beats me that fans don’t even start…..any idea to fix this? Thanks!

Can’t find how to remove the CD drive on my TravelMate 230. It says it’s here, but the website just is not user friendly.
