UPDATE: The site I was linking too removed all Acer manuals. I’m not sure if they will start sharing them again. I’ll keep this post alive because there are a lot of useful tips in the comments.

John,
Have you tried reinstalling the operating system? I think it should be your next step.

Also, something i don’t understand is. Before i re-installed windows i had it running fine all the time i could play games on it too. It is only when installing windows that it does this.
P.S now it keeps just getting a little of the installation done then turning off.

I have an ACER ASPIRE 1360 and I was re-installing windows, when the dvd/cd drive kept making a noise like a lawnmower ; ) … so it froze the windows installation and i turned it off. Next time round i turned the pc on and it got to about 27% of the install and it just suddenly shutdown, no noises, nothing. Next time around it did the same dvd/cd drive thing and i am not sure if this is an overheating problem, it does get quite hot quickly but i am not sure. Any help greatly appreciated!

Shey,
Make sure Acer sent you a good hard drive, you can test it with Hitachi’s drive fitness test utility. Download this utility, create a bootable floppy or CD disk and boot the laptop from it. Run an advanced test and see if the drive passes it.
I think it also could be a memory related issue. Test the laptop memory with Memtest86+. Use the same steps to prepare the media. Create floppy/CD, boot the laptop from it and the test will start automatically.

Suzie,
I think it could be a software related issue. Can you access the BIOS setup screen by pressing one of the function keys in the top row on the keyboard? I’m not sure exactly which one you should use for Acer laptops (try Esc, F1, F2). Can you boot the laptop into safe mode by pressing F8?
I’m just trying to figure out if the keyboard keys work fine before Windows starts loading. If it does, then it’s software problem.
If the keyboard keys do not work even in BIOS, then most likely it’s a hardware related problem. I’m not if you can take apart the laptop, but at the next step I would try reseating the keyboard and touch pad cables on the motherboard, maybe it’s just a loose connection.
Also check the BIOS settings (if you can access it of course). Set the BIOS to defaults. Check if there are any settings to enable/disable the internal keyboard/touch pad in the BIOS.

Hi…I need help! I have an Acer Aspire 5100. I started having hard drive problems about a month ago. Acer sent me a new blank hard drive…I installed it, but everytime I try to run my recovery disks on it, it fails….It will go to about 30% complete, then it will give me an error saying “Restore failed! Reason: 0sf0000005. When it restarts it gives me another error that says “NTLDR is missing Press any key to restart. I am not very good with computers, so I am trying everything I know to do. The recovery disks that I have are the ones that I paid Circuit City to make. Any thoughts or suggestions??

My laptop is live again!!!!!!!
I almost don’t believe it….check out the crazy story underneath
On 01/02/2007 my laptop crashed and i decided to sent it for service on 01/05 friday after trying to fix it by myself.
Today i went to the service point and got my acer back because i got ungry with them for the delay of the repair. One week ago i ordered them to do nothing with it.The laptop didn’t go onto the bench for check. So when i took it on my hands i started visual examination for any damages and accidently pressed the main start button.
the laptop began to work and boot up easy easy but correct. In the meanwhile 2 beeps heard from the main board which is a kind of trouble diagnostic code.(i don’t know it. Does anyone know it?)
When i arrived at my home i reboot it and know problem. I also checked for errors thru the management tools of windows but the only thing that displays to me is one service control manager fault.
Really i don’t know what happend guys….but one thing i know from my experience as amateur electronic engineer. Electronics are getting crazy sometimes and i do have stories to tell.
