UPDATE: The site I was linking too removed all Acer manuals. I’m not sure if they will start sharing them again. I’ll keep this post alive because there are a lot of useful tips in the comments.

My new ACER 4720Z once turned on, at different times will all of a sudden freeze with lines running vertically up & down on the display screen. Once this happens, it must be shut off by holding the power button down for 6 seconds. This has happened to the first one I baught, took it back - got another - same thing and now a third. I thought - finally, all was good - THEN - #3 did it too. Can anyone suggest what may be causing this. I have lost any faith I had with ACER. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Dave B,
This is very strange that you are experiencing exactly the same problem with three different laptops.
Try updating the video driver if there is a newer version available for downloads. Try updating the BIOS.

Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 3630, when you press the power on, the battery LED flashes Amber 8 times and then nothing else happens. This happens even when running with power (ie the laptop wont turn on). Any ideas?

So I decided to err on the side of caution and took my acer aspire 3630 to a repair shop. They called me today and said that the memory ports are damaged and to repair it will cost £270. So I think that ill just get a new one, as it doesn’t seem worth it.
Thanks for the advice guys.

Emile,
Test your laptop with headphones. If you headphones have sound all the time but external speakers work intermittently, most likely this problem is related to the external speakers.
If both internal and external speakers work intermittently, this could be either software related issue or something more serious, like sound card failure. Back up all personal files and reimage the hard drive from the recovery disc, it will reload the laptop back to factory defaults. If you still experience the same issue even after reimaging the hard dive, you’ll have to ship your laptop for service.
Also, find out if you have the latest BIOS version installed on your laptop. It’s possible (but not likely) that newer BIOS fixes this problem.

Hi, i’ve just bought an Acer laptop about a week ago & im already having an issue with it. Sometimes, eventhough the volume is set at a certain number or perhaps all the volume is up, sometimes there’s no sound especially when running applications like messenger. when someone signs in, sometimes i would hear & other times nothing…i even opened an application & was hitting the backspace buttom continuously..first it wasn’t making an sound but after it started to improve until it sounded as it should.. Can someone please tell me what’s going on??? Im disappointed that i’m having an issue soooo early….

Anastasia,
I think your laptop shuts down because of overheating. It happens because overtime the cooling module gets clogged with dust. You can fix the problem if you blow the dust off the heat sink and cooling fans. Buy compressed air and spray it inside the vents on the bottom or on the side of your laptop until all dust is gone.
