Also when i purchased this (2nd hand, about 3 weeks ago0 i noticed that someone must have had a memory card stuck in the reader at some point as it looks like they have hacked away inside it with a screwdriver! Would this cause my problem?

Markus,
Did you try removing memory chips one by one and testing the laptop with each one separately in different slots? It’s possible one of the memory chips failed and simple reseating them will not help.

Hi, i have an acer aspire 1670 it is running vista, it was recently updating when it froze, i had to switch it off, now it won’t come back on! the power comes on (fans, lights, hhd flashes once) oddly the wifi and bluetooth lights are on but nothing on the screen. i have tried swapping and resitting the ram chips, checking all internal cables, cleaning out the fans and removing the usual parts one at a time.
Please Please has anyone got any ideas (apaart from a new motherboard)
Thanks in advance

Martin,
Try cleaning the lens inside the CD drive with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol. If it doesn’t help, apparently the drive is failing and has to be replaced.
You said you bought two modules. Did you try installing the second one? Does the laptop fail with both modules?
Most likely it’s hidden under the keyboard.

Thanks for putting this together, it’s a nice resource.
Regarding all the weird CD-Drive errors people have been getting, I had something similar not long ago. I have an Acer Travelmate 2200, and the CD-drive gradually stopped reading disks. I’d put in a disk, it would read it, I’d put in the same disk the next day, it wouldn’t read it, or I’d have to eject and reinsert the disk a few times before it would read. Eventually, it just stopped reading all CDs.
I didn’t know what to do, and assumed I’d need to replace the drive, so I started messing with the delicate bits on the drive just for fun.
On the drive, there’s the little lens int its track that moves back and forth to read different parts of the disk as it’s turning. I pushed that back and forth a few times with my finger, all the way to the outside and all the way to the middle. Then I dropped in a disk and it worked!
Anyways, I’m here because of a different problem: I bought 2 RAM modules (1gb DDR 2700 soDIMM), to upgrade from the current configuration of a single 256mb module. I can’t find the existing RAM slot! I found the empty slot, and when I put one new module in there, the computer wouldn’t boot properly – windows XP would just about finish loading, and it would reboot and go into CHKDSK. Removing the new RAM returned everything to normal.
I think I need to install 2 identical RAM modules, which I bought anyways, but I can’t find the other memory slot to remove the old memory. The user’s manual is useless, it only describes the empty slot which I found already. Where is the other RAM slot?
Thanks.

mike,
Make sure the RAM module is seated correctly. Try reseating the memory module.
